No signings the right call

Arsene was right not to splash the £40 million he currently has sitting in the bank

No signings the right call

Tottenham: Amateurish

Looking at the amounts of money being branded about this week by other clubs made me realise that the route we have taken as a club in recent seasons must be the correct route to take for all clubs if possible. As soon, with the introduction of UEFA’s new regulations on the way that clubs’ finances are handled, the effects of over spending on players could see teams become unable to compete in various European competitions including the Champions League.

I feel we should show a little more reality where football is concerned these days as many fans seem to look at what other clubs do and get jealous at not being in the thick of the action where transfer dealings are concerned. But surely over the longer term we will be sitting pretty and looking damn solid compared to our south west London rivals and other big spenders.

Something stood out a mile for me reading the aftermath of the closing of the transfer deadline. Other teams are getting desperate.

There was an interview with Harry Redknapp where he mentioned that he went out for a meal near the end of the deadline and was then contacted by the Spurs chairman who asked him if he fancied Charlie Adam as a player. He replied he did and then the chairman got on with trying to prize the Blackpool player to the Lane in the dying minutes with the deadline approaching. Apparently an offer was accepted but various signatures were not obtained in time and the deal fell through. Can you imagine this happening at our club? AW heading off for a late night curry and just as he demolishes his fourteenth naan bread his mobile goes and it is Peter Hill Wood trying his best to force some random player on to the books of the club? Do you fancy him Arsene? Well do ya???

It all seems a tad amateurish to me. How can you run a club like that? Look at Liverpool and the whole Torres fiasco. They got bummed by Chelsea and what do they do in response? Check a list for who they can bum in return and quick time! Carroll for £35m is a joke. Fair enough he is a good player and may get very good over time but come on, £35m? They panicked big time at the thought of losing Torres and in an attempt to appease the fans they spent well over the odds on a relatively unproven striker which was an act born entirely out of desperation.

Do we really want our club to be run in such a way that risks its long term health and stability just so we can sit in front of Sky Sports News once a year with a slight sense of anticipation? I think not. Maybe we could have done with a further centre half on the books but we do have four with Song as a possible fifth choice in times of real need. Is that not enough? If we had splashed £20m on Cahill for example would he be in the first choice XI if everyone was fit and able to play? Why would AW consider this when he chose to wait and get Chamakh for free last summer? If you are not going to go out and spend a bit of money on a needed forward player then I doubt very much if you would then splash big money on a reserve centre half. It wouldn’t add up.

Where we could strengthen the squad for me would be in the summer with possibly one or two who seem to be well off the pace of our required levels of play heading to pastures new. Then with the salaries off the books we could get in a couple of new faces. Maybe a couple of midfielders to replace Rosicky and Denilson wouldn’t be a bad call, but we certainly are not in need of massive investment as things stand in my eyes.

The win against Everton showed us all that this team have bigger balls than they have had in recent seasons and I still feel massively confident that we will be heavily involved come the end of the season. United are far from home and hosed in my eyes and I cannot see them finishing the season as the Invincibles #2.

I liked the look of the way we came back to win Tuesday night’s match. We stayed relatively calm and it was great to see Arshavin get back on the scoresheet. Hopefully this will be the catalyst for him to show an improved spell of form as without Nasri we need him to be on fire over the coming weeks - I feel we miss our little Frenchman more than ever now. I get the impression AW feels playing with Theo and Andrey in the same side is too attacking against decent opposition and that is probably the reason behind Rosicky starting against Everton. I would like to see this changed to allow both players to start at Newcastle tomorrow (if Theo is fit).

United’s tougher spell is just about to start and I feel if we can just keep the right players fit and well for this upcoming period we have every chance of lifting more than one trophy this season. Who knows, with Orient to come in the FA Cup more than two could be on the cards, but I guess after six years without any trophies whatsoever that would just be plain greedy.

John, you keep spouting that TV "will be back in a few weeks" wasn't that what we were told in October, November, December and if he is back to match fitness by say middle of March, quite often other injuries are picked up after such a long lay off, so there is little chance of him remianing fit for the rest of the season, which is what you appear to pinning all your hopes on. Just 2 decent, hardworking, reliable players at centre back and in midfield (not world class costing £30m +) would have been enough to shore up our defenceive frailties but for yet another season Arsene fiddles while Rome burns. We have recently seen our squad players who are condsidered "best ever" by Arsene lose to Ipswich, fortunately draw with Leeds and be outplayed by, but scrape past, Huddersfield for gods sake. They are patently not good enough as has been shown over countless inept performances over the last few seasons but Arsene won't get rid as it will prove he has been wrong about them. Arsene won't pay an extra million or two for players - good housekeeping maybe, but what price do you put on a title win ??

Yes it was still the right idea. We got a draw which was one more point than what United managed at a worst teams ground than Newcastle. Sure it was obviously two points dropped but I dont feel one match makes anyones decisions clearly wrong. TV will be back in a few weeks and who knows about Djourou and Song, they could easily both be back for the Wolves game and then another signing would have still been waste of space. Koscielny does seem to have improved over the pasy couple of months and Djourou when fit is top class in my book. With TV to come in at some point in March we wont be looking that bad by then and we should have Nasri back in a couple of weeks. We all need to chill out after yesterdays game and realise it may not be that bad, we are closer to the top than we were at 3pm yesterday and that is after one of United's easier games. They play City nest week and Liverpool the week after unless I am mistaking so we could be closer than four points behind in a fortnight and be getting players back to full fitness at the right time. No signings still the right call for me.

What do you have to say now, you prat? No signings were great? Fucking team can't hold onto 4-0 and does what NO team has done before. Koscielny's a great CB. Yeah, he sure is. Get your fucking head outta Wenger's ass and breathe the oxygen instead of Wenger's ass and perhaps you'll start to think more clearly

The madness of today has just been compounded with Wolves beating Utd - in real terms we have gained a point on the Mancs but the real truth is, today was this season's Wigan and Birmingham all rolled into one! I watched the game on some Morrocan channel and as soon as Djourou went off I knew first, no clean sheet, then possibly only one point or perhaps none. Next time Arsene brings on the "Marx Brothers" as subs, why not bring them on driving a clowns car wearing suitable attire, drive to the centre circle and do that routine when the car won't go and oil squirts out everywhere or better still throw water over each other and then Eboue can run over to the crowd and throw it over them - only of course when he does only confetti comes out - no sorry what they did when they came on was even funnier - trying to make out they were footballers. Seriously, it now does not matter how many goals we are leading by - with any of those three on the pitch defeat is always a possibility. One final point The Gooner magazine has been accused of being negative but it only reflects the views of many fans who have been watching football for many years and know that the squad is not strong enough - Today just proved that their viewpoint is not only correct but has been correct for the last 4 - 5 seasons. It is such a shame because our great players are being let down by the not so great!

I was amazed to see the panic buying at the end of january. Chelsea are panicking, Liverpool panicked after selling Torres, Man City.splashed out again because they are panicking and need to win something to justify their billion pound team, Spuds? Harry Rednapp just a few weeks ago was saying they could win the title, now saying they are looking at a possible 4th place (and panicking) and Arsene Wenger, not panicking and doing the right thing. All those gunners who are having a go at AW for not buying a CB in january need to look at the results from november and those of january November: played 8, won 4 lost 4. Scored 13, conceded 11. without TV5 January: played 9, won 6, drawn 2, lost 1. Scored 18, conceded 4. without TV5 but with a defence that (on those figures) appears to be improving. So why panic buy for silly money? Wenger is an intellegent manager and has got it right. Lets see about the injury problems as/or if they arrive. Criticising supporters seem to be influenced by what has occured in previous seasons, not what is happening now. Over the next six weeks Man U are gonna drop crucial points, I don't think Chelseas panic buys will help them much over the last part of the season (though I'm glad Utd have to play them.and not us) I believe that we'll be top of the table by March 5th, I don't think we'll get by Barca but then we'll be able to concentrate on PL and FA Cup.

Its as if Wenger is once again trying to prove he wll win the title his way.But his stuborness has cost us in previous seasons when 1 or 2 signings would have pushed us over the finishing line.If Kos or JD gets injured are we going to rely on Squillaci If Song gets injured or suspended will we rely on Denilshit. This is a high risk strategy and a foolhardy one. What is the point in making huge profits and not spending the money. We have had 6 seasons of maybe

total agreement.... The classic line from so called 'experts' in the media is Arsenal need to buy.... Ok who? and at what price? This transfer window showed clubs get caught up in the frenzy and spend ridiculous money on players that are simply not worth it. Arsene has only bought players when he believes it is right and at a reasonable price. I prefer this stability than the concept of buying a player just because you have money!

Can you believe that Harry made 2 bids for Phil Neville. No panic there then!! Oh and he will sign Beckham, but Go Compare would not insure him. Charlie Adam, why not...too late. Look lads ,our man is the one with class and usually gets it right. But unfortunately not when he played Nasri.

Arsene will only be proved right if we win a trophy and qualify for the 'Champions' League.I hope and pray he is proved right. As for Redknapp it's the only way he knows how to manage, keep on buying any and every player that's mentioned in the papers and giving them any wages they demand. He and Peter Storie did that at Portsmouth and look at them now, hopefully he continues his good work at Spurs. note to the editor. --------------------- -------------------- Our players, manager and club are getting slaughtered daily for incidents that never get mentioned when 'committed' by players and other clubs ,on Talk Sport by Alan Brazil,Darren Gough and Dickhead Adrian Durham in particular .Please, please can't the Gooner do anything regards complaining about this. In aprox 20 days of broadcasting since the new year on the Durham programme at least 15 day have featured the slagging of anything to do with Arsenal.

Quoting what other clubs spent this week is iirelevant to us. I don't know a single Arsenal fan who demands a Chelsea / Man City style spending spree but pragmatism should dicatate & we are weak at Centre Back. Squillaci is a Silvestre / Stepanovs disaster that shouldn't have been signed. A Top quality Centre Back is needed to partner Vermaelen. Djourou is fragile, Kosceilny has potential but should not be 1st choice week in week out & Song has flourished in his midfield position this season so should not be used as a fill in. It doesn't make sense to move from Highbury to the Emirates & then be scrabbling about at the low end of the market for the Squillaci's of this world.

We are very close to having a trophy winning team again, that is obvious, but for me it was not about buying a player in this January transfer window. We have had a couple of seasons to purchase a decent centre back, goalkeeper and a defensive midfield player to boost the squad and create some serious competition for places. We are now relying on a very young keeper to stay fit and also keep his form for the rest of the season if we are to win something. I am one of the 40% who does think we will win the Premeirship (see Gooner Poll)but that is not because I don't think we are good enough it is because I fear we will run out of players just as we have done for the past few seasons. So surely if the same thing happens again this year most of our fans will agree that we need a bit better class of squad player than we currently have in our listed twenty five.

On the topic of getting around the "Financial Fair Play" rules, i heard a suggestion that smeone like Abramovich or the Arabs could just sell off the boxes at the stadiums for ridiculous amounts of money to subsidiary companies or in some other untraceable way, and then that balances the books. I just feel it's naive to believe that the finance wizards wont find a way to cheat. Cos we all know that Cheaters Usually Win.

Excellent piece John, agree with everything you say. The 5th CB is obviously a point for debate, but we've possibly seen what a rushed signing brings in the form of Squillaci. I personally would like Arsene to consider using Sagna as a makeshift CB if we're short of numbers. He's defensively fantastic in the air, regularly out-jumping taller players, and excellent at putting his body in the right position to stop the attacker getting to the ball. I may be wrong, but I believe he may have been used at CB by Auxerre on occasions as well. Spurs completely embarrassed themselves in this transfer period - you know when you read about Arsenal putting in bids for x number of players, you know it's nonsense, beyond the realms of possibility with Wenger. I thought it had to be the same with Spurs to some degree, the media were saying 3 or 4 bids for different strikers in Spain on the same day?, it would seem from everything that has come out since that this was possibly true - farcical! And Redknapp has got the cheek to come out with a foul mouthed rant when called a wheeler-dealer, how else would he describe this transfer policy?

Well I do understand frustration of most. I hate the fact we haven't won anything in such periods. But I rather win with what we have then try to buy the trophies. I hate losing. I play basketball and trust me, when you play hard and good yet loose. So what we work hard and training and learn through experiences so nxt time around we bit better then last. Personally I believe once the time get together and start winning it be the start. Why spend 20mill on a defender when we have 4 good one, yeah the best maybe injured. But look still in 4 competition with what we have. So support the team and stop bitching ( excuse language.) I am a proud person so I rather win we what we have. So if he bought Cahill for 20milln we still loose what will be the excuse people will come up with?

I guess we need cover then for every position on the team "in case of injuries" then! I really get tired of this injury scare that some Arsenal fans have got into. You can even detect the anger in some posts because Wenger won't spend! Again, take a look at goals conceded by top 4. Are other teams doing much better than Arsenal? The press has consistently dumped on Arsenal's defense without any shred of statistical evidence to prove it. I guess some fans just want to spend money so they can brag to their friends. What is really displayed by some teams is the lack of foresight and planning. Wenger assembles a squad he believes in the start of the season, and assesses the team at the end, no panic buying here.

IM SORRY BUT WHY ARE ARSENAL FANS SO SHORTSIGHTED?? NO ONE ASKED FOR £50M PLAYER..WE WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY WITH ANY DEFENSIVE PLAYER WHO WAS CAPABLE OF DEFENDING & CAN COME IN STRAIT INTO THE TEAM AS WE ARE SHORT AT THE BACK....IM SICK OF ALL AKBS AND ARSENE HIMSELF, COMING OUT AND SAYING TEAMS SHULDNT BUY IN JAN?? ARSHAVIN,DIABY,ADEBAYOR,WALCOTT..WHEN WERE THEY BOUGHT? HE SAT THERE SAYING OUR TRANSFER RECORD IS £15M? IS THAT SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF?? AV, EVERTON, SUNDERLAND, TOTTENHAM ETC..HAVE A STADIUM HALF THE SIZE OF OURS AND REVENUE THAT's not EVEN 20% OF OURS THEY STILL SPEND £15m ON PLAYERS If we had splashed £20m on Cahill for example would he be in the first choice XI - WHEN AT ARSENAL OVER THE PAST 5YEARS HAS OUR FIRST 11 BEEN FIT?? Why would AW consider this when he chose to wait and get Chamakh for free last summer? - HE WAITED TILL LAST SUMMER WHICH MEANT THE CLUB PLAYED 3MONTHS WITHOUT A STRIKER AND AS A RESULT WE FINISHED 3RD WHICH I BELIEVE YOU THINK ITS A SUCCESS AS U BELIEVE WHY BE AMBITIOUS AND WIN A TROPHY WHEN U CAN BE UNAMBITIOUS AND GET 3RD PLACE AND BE CONTENT.. Maybe a couple of midfielders to replace Rosicky and Denilson wouldn’t be a bad call - IM SURE U FOLLOW ARSENAL TO REALISE WE HARDLY EVER REPLACE EXPERIENCE WITH EXPERIENCE, SO IF ROSICKY GO, WE WOULD BE STUCK WITH AN 18YR OLD.... but we certainly are not in need of massive investment as things stand in my eyes -NO ARSENAL SUPPORTER SAID WE ARE IN NEED OF MASSIVE INVESTMENT BUT THE FRUSTRATION IS WE ARE 2 PLAYERS AWAY FROM BEEN THE BEST TEAM IN ENGLAND AND WIN EVERYTHING...AND WE HAVE BEEN 2 PLAYERS SHORT FOR THE PAST 5YEARS CUS WE ALWAYS HAPPY TO BUY CHEAP RUBBISH FRENCH PLAYERS, EXPENSIVE TEENANGERS AND PAST IT REJECTS..

Great article, and one that is very close to my own thoughts. Prices are just crazy however they will likely fall once City and Chelsea are forced to quit prime pumping the whole market. Their spending is having knock on effects all over, without it I expect Man U and Arsenal to have a lot more say in the transfer market. And as for Tottenham, they are going to have massive financial difficulties if they keep bidding £35m for players like Rossi. Sooner or later the stack of cards will fall and they'll be forced to sell Bale & co. Not even Man U can afford to buy their way to the title right now so I don't see how Tottenhan can afford their spending strategy. DON - AW is the best manager in the premier league and makes some unbeliveably good decisions. Time and time again people question his transfer policies given the information available and yet he is often proved right retrospectively. The whole Arsenal team only cost fractionally more than Torres for heavens sake! The right decision is the best one with the information you have available, whether or not in hindsight their was a better option, what you are arguing is ridiculous. What if RVP, MC and NB all got injured at the same time, would you then argue that AW should have foreseen the injuries and bought a striker? We have 4 centre halfs and a back up in Song. How many other clubs have 5 international centre halfs on their pay role? We are not bankrolled by a Sheik or Oligarch and have to pay the wages ourselves, recording a £70m loss like Chelsea isn't possible. If you're that upset I suggest you read Le Grove, the site for want-to-be City suppoters.

Agree - good article but with regards to UEFA's new rules coming into place do you not see that this not only affects Manure, Shity, The Chavs but the other big European clubs. I cannot see them NOT finding a loophole which would be a shame. I had a disagreement with an arsehole of a Chelsea fan who stated that Abramovich's business could sponser the team for £100 million a season to get round it

Good Article, and I agree with the it completely. This is looking like a great season for us, and the side is playing as well as they have for a number of years. Buying an overly priced CB makes no sense if they would not be first team starters etc. I do like the thought of a couple of new faces during the summer window, Sakho and Hazard would be ideal signings, and I agree with another DM. Arshavin had his best spell in a while on Tuesday night and hopefully is moving in to form again. Looking forward to the coming run-in, pleased to see Manure having to play the chavs twice still after their spending spree, and pretty confident we'll have a very silverware based season. I think we should applaud the direction both AW and the board are taking the club and with some of the younger players coming through, the future looks pretty bright indeed.

ARE YOU NUTS! No one is asking or expecting us to spend shed loads of money on over hyped and over priced unproven "stars" but not signing another CB is near insanity! Squallici is unreliable at best and Vermaleen is STILL not fit. If our other 2 CB's pick up injuries we're in the sh*t! Failure to sign a decent CB could break our season. Money had to be spent and we are told AW has cash to flash. But he never does and not because he's inept. Because something sinister is about.... Perhaps in reality AFC don't have money to spare?

Not so fast pat malone...we were about 20 minutes away against Everton from from making the wrong window decision. Unless I was watching a different game to the rest, our defending throughout the Everton game was diabolical to say the least. We are looking increasingly vulnerable at the back with recent injuries. I would've liked to see a strong centre back signed in the window, just for cover.

I completely agree with your analysis and conclusions. Why spend £20Million on a FIFTH CB when we have proven world class quality in vermaelen(who is three weeks away from a return from injury), Djourou and Koscielny. These three are generally believed to be top class. Remember we dont need to rotate as much in this position as in others. Squilacci is a decent backup who is still learning the pace of teh league, given time he could step up and provide the cover we need.

Great post. However, I do think we need a 5th cb on the books - George had 7!! We've been caught short in this area a number of times in the past few seasons. I just hope we don't go limping towards the home straight with a Squillaci and Song double act, with Denilson in front of them. I'm not talking £20m Cahill, but a 6 month loan for an experienced bod might have been prudent.

"The main difference between our squad and Manu is a weaker defence" @Adrian Do you actually realise that we have only let one more goal in than ManU in the PL? At the start of the season we might have had a weaker defence due to new players needing to get used to the PL and Djourou being back from a year long injury, but please look at our defence in January...

I am in general agreement with the strategy adopted by Arsene Wenger. I do feel that the club desperately needs a commanding centre half to shore up the soft centre. The main difference between our squad and Manu is a weaker defence, which is a potential threat to our trophy chase. If one or two of the present playing staff are to be sacrificed so be it. Squillaci is not good enough for this league. Arsene knows but not everything

Some managers (particularly twitchy ones) feel compelled to buy players for the sake of it, associating moving up the league by having more players.....quantity over quality. the fact is Wenger stole a march on the whole EPL with his scouting setup when he came to England which allowed him to get the best young players very cheap. Now it is very difficult to find a gem that no one knows about! We dont need to spend 40 million just to keep certain fans happy, the ignorance astounds me! When you sign a player is not just the initial fee, there is the whole term of the contract plus agent fee's etc...so a 40 million pound player will likely cost 60 mill over time! Id rather see us bring through young players who love the club so their loyalty is ingrained in them, then you dont need to rely on foreign players that are not loyal, its not their fault most of them grow up wanting to play for Real or barca, its a fact...which is why Cesc will go back to Barca one day, but I'd like to think that JW19 is gonna stay for his whole career....here's hoping!

We don't want Arsenal to overspend, but just to spend at all would be nice. We currently have 3 CBS and one DM. If Song has to go back you've got Denilson playing - a player you've said should be sold in the summer. So we're very light in certain areas, especially for a team challenging on four fronts. There is a difference between investing where needed and buying Andy Carroll for £35m. A further point is I don't think we could sell Denilson. Which lower tier European club would be prepared to pay the wages he gets at Arsenal? So we're stuck with him. This goes for many of our mediocre players.
