Almunia: Should never play again

Arsenal away fans, thank you for giving us something to be proud of on Saturday, you, each and every one of you to a man. If I'm forgetting any ladies I'm sorry, thank you too for your fantastic support. All of you managed to turn that little 25,000 capacity West Brom ground into a miniature Highbury. Yes I do mean the old Highbury that we miss and love, not the sterile Ashburton Grove Enormodrome complete with the infamous prawn sandwich tier ring of silence known as club level.

You deserved so much better, you were the 12th man when we went 2-0 down and gave our better players the lift to score two late goals. Do not underestimate your positive influence on this game and you are all a credit to our club. Is this the real reason Arsenal have such a great away record? You kept on supporting our boys, singing loudly until the final whistle even though you know in your hearts some of them are not fit to wear the shirt.

The way in which at times in our 2-2 away draw you made it seem like Arsenal were really the home side makes me proud to call myself a Gooner. Towards the end you could almost feel the Gooner energy sucking the ball into the net. I've only been to one away match out of London this season and you guys have inspired me to start going a lot more. You did your utmost to ensure that you provided an inspirational atmosphere for some of those muppets in yellow and it breaks my heart to think about how short changed you were by the performance of some of our players.

Almunia should never play for us again, simple as that. Even a half fit Lehmann or the rookie youngsters we have cannot be nearly as awful as he so clearly is. I didn't think he would ever play for us again after the home game against West Brom, where I was unfortunate enough to witness one of the worst goalkeeping displays in recent memory. Saturday's mad dash and collision with the hapless Squillaci was the icing on the cake. He will see him go down as one of, if not the worst Arsenal goalkeeper in living memory. It's almost like he did it on purpose to get back at Wenger, isn't it?

"Embarrass me will you? Relegate me to third choice, then bring back that mad German who used to call me names? I'll show you, I'll show you all!"

If he was not so completely and utterly useless all the time I'd be wanting to check his family's Betfair and Paddypower accounts for suspicious activity. Maybe it was the fear of losing his last chance to secure a top flight move by losing his place in the shop window to 41-year-old emergency loan signing Jens Lehmann that turned him into what I can only describe as a developmentally disabled scarecrow made entirely of jelly. Maybe coming back against the team that he had his last shocker against got to him psychologically? Whatever the reasons it won't be good enough for me, as if he wasn't shot to pieces before this he certainly is now. If Wenger picks him again I will never defend Wenger again, ever.

Ignasi Miquel or Kyle Bartley would have been better choices at centre half than Squillaci who has had more than enough opportunities now to show what he can do. He really hasn't settled or improved since he arrived at the club at all.

If Wenger does not demand the funds from the board to sign a truly world class centre half this summer then we will not win anything next season. I doubt that he will, as I think he himself is the man most convinced by the board’s pleas of poverty. Some of you will disagree, but I believe that Arsene was told by the board to sell before he could buy any players.

Here's why I believe this is the case:
He sold Adebayor for £25 million, Toure for £14million and Eduardo for £6million (£45 million received), then our money men also (wrongly in my opinion) offloaded the experienced Gallas on a free because he was demanding £80,000 a week on a two year contract therefore saving our miserly board just over £8million on top of the £45 million in transfer fees already received meaning they banked £53million.

At the time chairman Peter Hill-Wood said in an interview - “His [Gallas’] demands are extravagant and I don’t think we are prepared to go along with it. He is a good player, but you have to draw the line somewhere."

"Draw the line somewhere?" how about you finally advise the board to spend some of the fans’ hard earned money you tight old git! Instead of just waiting to pay off the stadium debt so you can all sell the only football club in the world with no debt to the highest bidder!

We then bought over the same time period with the £53million:
Arshavin for £15m, Koscielny for £8m, Vermaelan for £10m, Squillaci for £4million and Chamakh on a free, so a grand total of £37million plus wages on top of that. If we could have kept some of those that we sold or let go, or at least paid more for some of the replacements we would be top of the league by now and I'm absolutely gutted when I think about how still having Gallas or even Toure right now would be a dream compared to Squillaci.

How much would all of us Gooners like to see a top international defender join us? Well, it won't happen unless we find a spare £20million or so from somewhere because this board will not spend any money until they've paid off that stadium. Tommy Vermaelan and Djourou are to be considered injury concerns as Djourou’s injury record speaks for itself and who knows what kind of complications will arise from Vermaelen’s lengthy lay off?

That leaves us with Koscielny. He polarises opinion like no other Arsenal centre half does because quite frankly he sometimes looks like a world beater and on other occasions looks every bit a player from the second tier in France. The player may very well one day be considered world class but we need at least four world class central defenders at a club like Arsenal right now to win trophies.

If Wenger can't get any money without selling players he should sell Denilson, Diaby, Bendtner, Squillaci, Almunia, Fabianski and Eboue - if he can find anyone stupid enough to buy them. If no one does buy them and the board still won't give him any of our hard earned money then he might have to bite the bullet to raise funds and sell Arshavin and Rosicky. They are both decent players but probably not what we need most right now, which is a top class goalkeeper and a top class central defender.

If things carry on down this route I can see Fabregas being offloaded for £50million and seeing only £40 million spent on new players if we are lucky with the board pocketing £10 million at a minimum.

No wonder it is then that our home support doesn't match the intensity of the wonderful away support. We are all sick and tired of seeing our club heading down the Ajax route and becoming known solely for bringing through young players who will then be sold for massive profits. I do not want to stand by and watch Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere roll off the production line and be sold for untold millions.

I think it's about time for Arsenal to start finding additional revenue from somewhere else such as merchandising or negotiating better deals for sponsorship rather than trying to forever make a profit from player trading.

A recent article on this website made the excellent point that we could recoup a lot of money in merchandising if we bought a superstar or two and would generate a huge hike in sponsorship revenue if said superstars resulted in us winning the Premiership or Champions League. I totally agree and think that with a little more considered risk in our transfer spending our greedy board could reap even more cash than they currently do, with thousands of happy Gooners spending even more money and raising our profile internationally. It's not only us fans who can see what they are doing.

Love him or loathe him, the always outspoken and never shy Andrey Arshavin said in a recent interview “Arsene needs to buy new players and expensive ones. All the talented and inexpensive players are already with us and the players who could really boost our power are all costly to bring in. I realise that if we buy a star, someone in the squad will be rejected but this is fair. It is the manager's job to decide such things.”

I was at the West Brom game and the only home fans that made noise when there wasn't a goal were the ones next to us in the smethwick stand. The gooners stood up and chanted throughout the whole game even when we were 2 down.

Thanks to the W.B.A. Fans for posting. I hope you stay up and are ready for next season as I think that you boys will be looking at dropping 6 points against us next year! Enjoy your little victory for now as you are a club going absolutely nowhere! Do not insult our away support as it is one of the finest in the land.

I agree. The acoustics at The Grove mean the two ends can barely hear each other. They also pull out some great banners that would have more of an impact right next to the away fans. It would mean a lot of administative work re-jigging people around, but it's surely not irreversible. It would take a while, but would be more than worth it.

I also feel that the club made a grave error in putting the Red action section as far away from the away fans as possible. This results in less banter between the two sets of fans as they can hardly hear each other!

Bizarre. As an Albion supporter I like Arsenal and the way they play but, having been at the game I just do not recognise the comments on support. I am afraid that if that was the Arsenal supporters getting behind their team then they have a lot to learn from many of the other travelling supporters I have seen at the Hawthorns this season, especially Blackpools.

I agree about the segregation. We do already have a section for this purpose - the REDsection in Block 5/6 where REDaction sit/stand. I've only been in there once & it's so much better than anywhere else in the stadium. (Admittedly it was for a game we went top so the place was jumping anyway.) I didn't sit down once all game & came home hoarse. As it should be. I've sat elsewhere & had startled looks from children for...wait for it...singing! At football!? How many of us have gone home with the hump at the lack of support from those around us? Or the mere fact that we'd stick out a mile if we did support our team in a way we do at away games? Areas like this need to be expanded. Like-minded fans who are frustrated with the mutes around them should have the chance to actually get behind the team. Surely the club want better home support? It's worth several more points a season. This would be a huge step forward. I know REDaction have looked into expanding their area but pressure on the club needs to come from all of us who want this to happen.

Well I for one could only hear the Albion fans at "our little ground" ? Wasn't Highbury known as the Library ? Thanks for the 4 points this season Gooners, you were lucky it wasn't 6 if the referee had spotted Bendtner's handball for the second goal.

sold Toure because him and Gallas hated eachother. then outed Gallas.. let Flamini go for £15,000/week he wanted. let Hleb go for £20,000/week that he wanted. it is a conveyor belt and the rules are as follows. No older players unless bought in on the cheap i.e sell Viera and Henry and Lehman and Campbell when to have them around would have been massive but bring in Sylvestre, Campbell and Lehman later on for less money. when Hleb and Flamini and Cole wanted money but not to leave then sell them on and replace for cheaper. it is a Business not a football club anymore. as for Prawn Sandwhich brigade, AFC went out of their way to bring these people in through the way they marketed the Emirates stadium. they wanted them in as they spend lots of money each match. Man U have the balance right. Prawn Sandwhich income but made sure the Stretford End was protected for the vocal support. its not difficult to have arranged this as others have made this good point.

this is nonsensical stuff, if you's just focussed on almunia and denilson then maybe i could have agreed in principle but none of the other players mentioned are anywhere near as bad as those two. i cant think of any team in the world with 4 world class centre backs, this is bare bones time and what we're lacking is determination rather than quality. going on and on and on about who we should buy and what we should do is pointless. save it for the pub after 16 beers, at least then everyone is so drunk they won't remember this drivel.

Why blame Squillaci he did nothing wrong. If Almunia had not come charging out they would not have scored.I thought he had learnt his lesson coming out of his area when he had no chance of getting the ball, but obviously old habits die hard.He obviously does not pick himself to play.A combination of bad luck losing 2 keepers have put him back in the firing line.He is clearly third choice and will not be at the club next season.

Small point about the home support, but i have commented on this issue before. In my opinion, the club can go a long way to improving the atmosphere at home games, they can segregate/sort home fans in a more effective way by offering areas of no swearing etc etc for young people and family types and other areas where a more voiciferous behaviour may be encountered. This way the church mice and prawn sandwich merchants should all be in the same place and the rest of us in and around block 19 east lower giving it to the away fans and coming home, with hardly a voice. I have encountered this phenomena in most parts of the ground that I have been in (silver member-ticketing via clud website where you are invited to choose which area you sit) for example this year against barca I was north upper and a good atmosphere was present, last year for the same fixture and the previous year V the mancs c/l semi final, I had tickets in the clock end upper sitting next to church mice and mutes.

Phil Thompson mentioned the Arsenal fans in his post match summary.I do think the away support is better than at home, but Arsenal are not unique in that. It's a cliche but only real fans travel away..which is not to say that all who don't travel are not real fans.

Great comments but coming from Belfast and a gooner forover 40 years all games are away games to me. I know from experience that away games attract true supporters who sing snd cheer before during and after games. Before Highbury closed i can remember watching a game seated in the North Bank. In those days tickets were hard to come by and our Belfast Arsenal Supporters Club could get average 20 per game. The row in front of me was occupied by a Chinese Family mother, father and 2 kids of 5 and 6 and the kids fell asleep. How they can get tickets and loyal fans can't i dont know. Since moving all you see at the clock end is support from all the corners of the earth with their purchaces out of the club shops an watching a match between readind or talking to their friends or relatives. Arsenal now have less vocal support an its like a morgue at the clockend and the reason you only hear the away support. I personelly wont be going to any home games as the atmosphere is crap compared to the away games and until Almunia goes and Wenger gets his hands out of his pockets an buys what we all know has needed for this last 6 years. Why do some of you who come on to this website, and depending on whether you are an AKB or an AMG or even in between have to belittle or sometimes use foul language against anybody who happens to submit an article that does not fall on your particular side of the fence? Why should someone be told to go away and support the spuds, or have their loyalty questioned, just because they submitted an article? Imagine if all those whom took the time to write an article to post did not have broad shoulders, and hence never again posted a personal viewpoint, in particular our editor and Simon Rose who submit as regularly as clockwork. This site and any other fanzine sites would soon become obsolete, if they did not have those broad shoulders, and then you would have nothing to read!! The solution is if you disagree with someone's else's point of view is for you to either comment on it, which thankfully most of us do sensibly, or submit your own article to put your own argument across. At the end of the day we are all Gooners who want the same thing, which is success for the club we all love, so we do actually have quite a lot in common!!! All I am saying is please refrain from childish name calling or dismissing another persons point of view, and be prepared to accept and analyse one different from your own. This entry is not refering to this particular post, but generally as I have read some pretty nasty responses to some articles in the last fortnight, which I feel are unfair and uncalled for, to the relevant authors.

@ReadOnlyGooner4356. Thankyou for your feedback and let me again state that I felt your support (as always) was exceptional. I respect your commitment to the club and your passion.I am always defending Wenger despite getting it with both barrels from all angles and have never "slagged him off". I have disputed the so-called "fact" that he has willingly refused to spend money and only now in March 2011 have I even voiced the opinion publicly that the board must give him money to spend. most people would consider me patient. If we don't win the league this season we better hurry up and do something next season as I believe that it is only a matter of time before Man City are in the champions league and can therefore attract a better coach (Mourinho?) and maybe some of the greatest players on the planet. If that happens and Chelsea continue to drop £70million + in transfer windows, Manchester united don't completely collapse and Spurs continue their upward trend we will look back at this season, last season and maybe realise next season is our biggest chance of success before we are caught up or completely overtaken. all our rivals are spending money! do you really want to stand by for much longer and accept the truth that we blew it all for the sake of spending a few quid on obvious squad deficiencies?

@ post 4366, Please read my last article on this website titled "He's not the antichrist!..." I've been one of Wenger's biggest supporters for years but even I now say that If he picks Almunia again I cannot defend him anymore without looking like a complete fool. If he picks that clown one more time it for me is Gross misconduct, plain and simple. Even if he can't pick Former German International Jens Lehmann for whatever reason (how bad can he be?) he should use one of the rookie keepers he has. Almunia makes rookie mistakes all the time so I don't see any extra danger coming from an actual rookie being in goal. I Love Wenger for what he has done for Arsenal F.C. and have always defended him and took the flak for it. when push comes to shove I am a fan of Arsenal first and Arsene second so if he plays Almunia again that is a crime against my first love that I cannot tolerate. I'm every bit of a fan as you are so please don't question my loyalty, every man has his limits.

From last year's leftover monies, I think it get shared between the shareholders to keep them happy so that they don't sell more of their shares. Watch this space as I believe next season will exactly be just like any other season in the last 6 years, since we're not going to buy any more players except 1 or 2 but to carry on investing on our players which we have already .e.g. players we have sent to other clubs as loanees. The way I see it, if we mange to win a trophy then so be it otherwise even after wenger era the same phylosophy will be carried on as this is the best way to make money for the shareholders. We are going to keep flirting with cup finals and not winning them unless we have more J Wilshere. Although I'm trying not to be negative but I can see us fighting for 2nd place.

Just a quick one- you have spoken about supporting the team which is very important, but you go on to slate players and board and Wenger. That's not support. Every club has better fans away from home than at home. Give the new stadium time, trophies and the team needs more Jack Wilshere's and english players! BUT big point- Gallas going was not a bad thing at all. He is overrated- and now too old. I agree that there are mistakes that Wenger has made, and I in particular do not blame Almunia for his deficiences but Wenger for persisting with him- but the point is that he is in an Arsenal shirt and therefore we want him to do well and stop looking for blame. Stop saying if we do this we'll win, and just support the damn team. Tell you what we do need though on this matter- another Vieira would sort that team right out.

Has anyone noticed that the saddest thing is that we are resigned to the worts outcome. My reaction to the West Brom fiasco - as it was to the nature of the defeat to both Brum and Barca - was one of resignation! Same old same old. I have (almost) given up. Normally I read these articles with relish and digest them, but this time I feel I have to reply. To be honest - I'm sick of everyone constantly slagging off the Team, the Manager, the Board. Ok - they are not perfect, but they are only human, I'm not sanctioning what they do - and yes they shoud be made aware of the Fans' disagreement but to be honest most articles on here recently put so much of a downer on the Club - I wonder why they even bother, for goodness sake - how will they ever improve if they are constantly slagged off with such venom. Take the rough with the smooth, we have what we have and get on with it. There are things you can control and things you cant e.g. the Ref, Injuries, the Competition Draws etc. (or so we'd like to think!) It happens to everyone other 'big' clubs, Chavs and Scouse, have had it rough too. I was one of the 12th (wo)men at the Hawthorns, and even there in first half there was absolute fury directed at Wenger. With regard to the Emirates - I've always said there should be a standing terrace. I bet it would expand year on year. Get behind the Team - Barca was always going to generate the glamour and excitement, but remember Everton - the seething injustice at Saha's goal being allowed? the fans carried that game too and we got what we rightfully deserved. Good, Bad and Ugly - show some support and put yourself out for the Team, We can do it.

Due to the recent disaster in Japan has there been any updates regarding the potential pre season tour? I doubt it is going to happen now. I wonder if those brave nuclear workers are on better wages than some of our players. God bless them all.

I agree with pretty much every word. It's an open secret that we undersold the sponsorship, kit and stadium naming rights back in 2005 because we were short of money. If I'm not mistaken these are up for renegotiation shortly and a pre-season tour of Japan is in the pipeline. For a club that, supposedly, wants to be one of the biggest in Europe, we seem very reluctant to exploit additional revenue streams and subsequently front load the cost onto the fans. I wouldn't hold my breath re any major changes. Wenger will buy 2-3 max and only 1 will be £10m plus. 3 or 4 will leave. The money is there. Not the same level as Chelsea or Man City, but we have £40m+ judging by last year's accounts but refuse to spend it.

In response to ''I know what I would do if I was on the board, and that would be to scrutinise the names of the very supporters who consistently travel to away games, because the club has that information, and then move heaven and earth to rejig where these fans sit in our stadium, by grouping these very supporters together.'' I agree with this, as do many others. There needs to be more segregation of like-minded fans at the Grove. Dividing those who would rather sit in relative peace in a family-friendly environment & those who would be okay among a livelier section/won't complain if people around them stand up, isn't beyond the realms of science. A re-jig is vital for our home atmosphere. It may take time, but will be well worth it. How many people are frustrated at being marooned with non-singers who have no desire to get behind the team? Move them. This way the ''siddowns!'' are happy & so are those who actually want to 'support' the team.

David Luiz's stellar performances for Chelsea have highlighted Wenger's dereliction of duty. To anticipate the usual excuse, precisely which promising youngster would Luiz's signing for £21 millon have prevented becoming an Arsenal legend either at centre-back or defensive midfield, two of the three positions where we most sorely lack quality?

You raise a very valid point Joe, re the vocal away support v the often sterile home experience. It was interesting to note RVP mentioning in his interview post the Barca home game, that the very vocal support at this home game was like having a twelfth man. So clearly were this to happen more often it would not do the cause any harm, in fact quite the opposite. So the question is how do you get to transmit the undoubted excellent vocal away support into the Grove? I know what I would do if I was on the board, and that would be to scrutinise the names of the very supporters who consistently travel to away games, because the club has that information, and then move heaven and earth to rejig where these fans sit in our stadium, by grouping these very supporters together. In addition I would turn a blind eye when in this area of the stadium the majority of these fans were standing up for most of the time, by instructing the stewards in that location to have a certain degree of leniancy with fans whom stand, and then sing!!! I realize the police, and health and safety people would scupper part B of this plan eventually, but by then the club will have achieved it's mission because that section of the ground will always be vocally suportive forever, and who knows may inspire other sections to find their collective voices and join in and even compete like we allways did at Highbury between the North Bank and the Clock End. Finally Joe, having heard Wenger's comments today that Jens is way off being ready for a starting place, it looks like the Spanish waiter will be between the sticks in a fortnight v Blackburn, and so you will find yourself in a position of never ever being able to defend Wenger again!!! I am sure mad Jens has other ideas though, and he may yet come back to rescue you, from such a position!!! Certainly if Wenger has any nous left in him, he will never ever put the name Almunia on his team sheet again, as it would be akin to writing his own suicide note!!

I agree 100%..Alumina and Squillaci should never play for Arsenal again and in the summer we need to get rid of Alumina, Flapianski, Squillaci, Diaby, Denilson, Bendtner and Rosicky.. We need 2 new top GK, 2 new DF, 1DMF, 1 Striker and 1 Winger who can play on both wings.. Failure to do so and Wenger should go...

    What an utterly boring rant!
