Arsenal Season Ratings

Another review of the squad – player by player

Arsenal Season Ratings

Squillaci – Became a liability

Season Ratings:

1 Manuel Almunia – 3 – A disaster from start to finish. Consistently made costly errors that belie such an experienced player. Should be shown the door this summer.

21 Lukasz Fabianski – 6 – Looked a competent goalkeeper until his season was cut short through injury. I have confidence in his ability as a backup goalkeeper.

13 Jens Lehmann – n/a

53 Wojciech Szczesny – 8 – Made himself Arsenal's No1 at the age of just 21, which is some achievement. An excellent player who I believe will be an Arsenal goalkeeper for years to come.

3 Bacary Sagna – 7 – A good, solid, consistent season from the league’s best right-back.

5 Thomas Vermaelen – n/a

6 Laurent Koscielny – 6 – All in all a good introduction to English football, especially considering he was thrown straight in with very little time to adapt. His season contained the full spectrum of performances, from the excellent to the very ordinary. Must stop giving away penalties.

18 Sebastien Squillaci – 4 – Started his first few games brightly but has got progressively worse and has been a liability ever since. Doesn't even attempt to take control of situations. Not a Premier League defender. Suggests that, perhaps, experience is overrated. Shouldn't play for Arsenal again.

20 Johan Djourou – 7 – A very good season for the Swiss international, who was the fulcrum of the defence for much of year. Appears to have at least partially got over his injury problems, and is starting to look an excellent centre-half. A fairly terrible end of season prevents him from getting a higher mark, however.

22 Gael Clichy – 6 – A poor start to the season was amended by some very good mid-season form. Drops in concentration in key moments continue to be a Clichy trademark, however, and I don't expect to see Clichy in an Arsenal shirt next season.

27 Emmanuel Eboue – 5 – Eboue’s role in the team is to be a solid, reliable squad player, mainly as a right-back. Yet a lack of any discipline in his game means he will never be any of these things. His disastrous, unnecessary mistake against Liverpool effectively ended our season and could also spell the end of his Arsenal career.

28 Kieran Gibbs – 6 – A season in which we learnt nothing new of the England international. A talented sick-note of a player with very poor defensive understanding and positioning.

17 Alexandre Song – 7 – Another solid campaign for the midfielder who forged a good understanding with Wilshere, further demonstrating his vital importance to the team. His main problem is a lack of competition and cover for his position.

2 Abou Diaby – 5 – Talented he may be, but his lack of work rate and constant over-dwelling on the ball is too often a hindrance to the side.

4 Cesc Fabregas – 6 – Often sheer class when playing, but another injury-plagued campaign has been detrimental to his season. Too many injuries, and too many questions over his commitment worry me. I hope he stays, but I can only see a move to Barcelona on the horizon this summer.

15 Denilson – 4 – A nothing season from a nothing player. Simple as. Should be sold this summer.

16 Aaron Ramsey – 7 – Has done great to come back and seemingly play without fear. At the end of the season he came close to looking like the Ramsey we all admired pre-Shawcross. Looks promising for the future.

19 Jack Wilshere – 9 – Our most consistent player of the season, absolutely superb. His performance at home against Barcelona truly was a joy to behold and was a high point in the season for both Wilshere and Arsenal Football Club.

7 Tomas Rosicky – 3 – Hardly even a shadow of his former-self. Offers nothing, has minimal impact and provides zero end product. Penalty miss at Sunderland cost us vital points. Should be let go this summer.

Good analysis overall. Just a few things. Nasri. Tailed off spectacularly as soon as people started Player of the Year talk, and a big part of the problem of over elaboration in front of goal. Contract conduct, French team bus row, Gallas handshake suggest a selfish big head. I know it goes against the conventional wisdom, but statistically, Arshavin was more influential. Close observation would show that Diaby is coming on, and was superb in games he played in towards seasons end. The lack of work rate charge simply isnt true, and he's dwelling on the ball less. What we're beginning to see is his superb close control and dribbling--- aomething Arsenal lacks. Clichy much improved defensively. Rosicky, Wilshere? Spot on. For me Chesney isnt there yet. Where are the blinders that rescue 2 points? Completely at fault in Carling final, and failed to stop the bleed at Newcastle.

You were right about a lot of them but you gave our defensive midfielder and our first choice back line ratings between 6 to 8 despite us conceding something like 42 goals in 38 games in the league this season. I also believe Szczesny has the POTENTIAL to be a top goalkeeper in about 5 years but if you honestly believe that the keeper who made a howler to cost us the Carling Cup and let in 4 in about 20 mins versus Newcastle plus other errors in the last few league games is good enough to be No.1 at a club like Arsenal and is deserving of 8/10 for his performances this season then you must be related to him or something.

Sound reasoning Matthew. However here goes my end of term marks: Almunia 1 Fabianski 3 Scez 7 Sagna 7 Kos 5 Squill 4 Djourou 5 Clichy 5 Eboue 5 Gibbs 5 Song 7 Diaby 2 Fabregas 6 Denilson 2 Wilshere 9 Rosicky 1 Nasri 7 AA 6 RVP 8 Walcott 5 Chamackh 5 Bendtner 5 The entire squad bar Wilshere have a selling price on their heads for me.

You have only 4 players with a score under 5. Imo you have overrated most of these bunch of bottlers and losers. Overall team score 4.

Naah disagree this Andrei's poor score of a 5...he was good for us this not perfect but good. His assists were great and he managed to score 10 goals and 17 or so assists...give the lad some credit please.

What did Manuel Almunia do to get his rating of three? It does beg the question of how bad would someone have to be to score lower than a three? Thinking about it is scary...

I agree with most of this, but a seven for Song??!! I think a few games (ie Chelsea 3-1) apart, his was a season of lazy, sloppy passing and bone headed positional play, as well as some Eboue-like red-mist that should have led to more red cards than the one he got at Sunderland (costing us points in as big a way as the Rosicky penalty miss). Diaby and Eboue 5 each is very generous too, and although I am in no way a fan of Squillacci, you have given him a 4 even though he put more decent performaces in than those 2 idiots combined. Gibbs I think slighly over rated, Arshavin deserved a tad more. But overall, good article!

Matthew, Considering we are all staunch gooners (rose tinted glasses obviously), I consider this article very fair and for that I offer my praise! Concise, succinct, unopiniated, I call on any Arsenal Fan who has watched our team and the above said players this season to raise any complaints. I cannot find one rating I don't agree with whether I like or favour certain players (as we all do)or not. The article stands out because it measures the players purely on their football performance and what they have given to the side this season. Matthew, you should have done a small synopsis on Arsene as well. Great article, dont normally read the gooner and am not a big fan of many of its writers and its underlying ethos, but I will certainly seek out for your articles in the future. Great article, appreciated by this lifelong gunner. Cheers Matthew, respects Flashman71.

Chamakh should never ever have been an Arsenal player, was exhausted after 2 months, what a sissy as prolific in front of goal as one certain Kaba Diawara and Franny Jeffers.Clichy didnt exactly cover himself in glory ,cant defend for life and one of the main culprits why Arsenal are in disarray defensively.Koscielny, tried the best he could but will never be a respectable pl defender too scrawny and to fragile makes to nmany basic errors. The rest i agree with.

a 5 for abou diaby, are you sure, if rosicky gets a 3 because he cost us points at sunderland then what of diaby's sending off at newcastle and the collapse that followed. This guy is continually injured and never plays 1 out of 10 at best for me.

That's the best way to set out an article such as this - brief, punchy, factual. Like it. The only part I disagree with - and I admit to nitpicking here - is Chamakh's "mental zstrengszt" ( Copyright Wengerpedia 2011). The boy deserves another shot next season, similar to how most of us on here agree that Koscielny be granted a second year to prove or disprove his worth to the squad, before being judged like some of the lazy / incompetent buggers we already have. I would really like to see how Chamakh playing as a true no.9, facing towards goal would work. He spent most of his Bordeaux career playing that style, feeding off crosses and through balls. The boy is good with his head, but in the current formation the service is nowhere near good enough to exploit that. Then, RVP could drop deeper and play the Bergkamp no. 10 role that he always should have been playing anyway. Don't tell me that Dennis groomed RVP for 5 years only for him not to play there!
