Loan Ranger: Henri Lansbury

Just how high has Henri been flying with the Canaries?

Loan Ranger: Henri Lansbury

Henri: Not ready for the Arsenal first team

This is the first in a series of articles written by fans of clubs who have had Arsenal players on loan last season. We’ve asked them to give us an honest appraisal of the player’s performance, their relationship with the fans, whether they think the player has a chance of making it at Arsenal and, if not, whether they’d be interested in making the loan a permanent deal. First up, Henri Lansbury who spent over six months at Norwich City as they stormed to an unlikely automatic promotion from the Championship.

Henri arrived at Carrow Road in November, ahead of the first East Anglian derby of the season. He found himself handed a starting berth immediately, where he made an impressive debut, the highlight being an exquisite through-ball for Grant Holt to slam home a second for Norwich. Most City fans took to Lansbury from the off, he had a bite in the midfield, an aggression as well as a bundle of skill and passing talent.

His trademark ‘Dougie’ celebration became popular amongst the Carrow Road faithful, leading to public performances from Henners at the End of Season dinner and Civic Reception.

After a brief return to Arsenal, Lansbury's loan was extended until the end of the season. February proved to be, arguably, his best month as a Canary, scoring three goals - including a priceless last gasp strike against Millwall, seeing the Canaries run out as 2-1 winners. He continued to impress as he rammed home against Reading, capping an impressive move to give City the lead. His next goal came at Elland Road, where the 'Dougie' had its first outing as Lansbury drew the Canaries level.

Despite a positive start to his City career, Lansbury's performances began to falter slightly, seeing him dropped to the subs bench. He found opportunities limited, though did impress when introduced. He again struck late on as Bristol City came to Carrow Road, sparking a terrific late show for City to claim a 3-1 victory and catapult themselves into second.

With Norwich looking good value for promotion, Lansbury found first-team opportunities consistently hard to come by, although he did run the midfield when coming on against Scunthorpe United in a 6-0 thumping. Overall, it was a productive loan spell for the 20 year old, scoring four goals in 23 games and taking home a runners-up medal.

Although he looked impressive, he would not appear to be ready to be a regular Arsenal starter. If he was awash with such quality, it's fair to say he would have stood out like a baboon's backside in a field of snow and the way he struggled to hold down a starting place, particularly during the latter months of the season shows that this wasn’t the case. If he was to have a promising future at Arsenal, it's clear he would surely have been a regular starter for Norwich and made a continuous impact during proceedings.

There’s not much doubt Lansbury has the talent but needs to be carefully nurtured because whilst he has looked good in the Championship, he is yet to be tested at the highest level and therefore another loan spell, this time at a Premiership club may be the best course of action for him.

Recent interviews have indicated he wants assurances that he has a future at Arsenal otherwise he'll be seeking employment at another club and there are many fans at City who would be delighted to see Paul Lambert parading Lansbury as one of his new signings this summer. It's over to you Mr. Wenger to decide the part Henri is to play.

Thanks to Danny from the excellent unofficial Norwich City fans' site ontheballcity.com for his help in organising this piece.

I was impressed with Lansbury's performance against Spurs this season just gone. While I know that's not enough to judge him on as a player, I feel like he should get a chance, especially if Denilson leaving opens a gap. Btw, if Denilson needs a lift to the airport...

lansbury certainly deserves his chance and he couldnt be any worse than wasters like denilson song or diaby. i would love to see us buy joey barton,he can tackle, shoot, can take a decent free kick and is a much better footballer than he is given credit for.also he wouldnt be afraid to bollock players who were not pulling their weight (arshavin, diaby, walcott to name but three) i appreciate he has a pretty dodgy past but he seems to have settled down as he has got older.

I heard only good things about his spell at Carrow Road, from a Norwich season ticket holder. I think he could be a valuable squad member adding some desire, bite in the tackle and workrate that is sadly lacking in to many of our fringe players. Don't expect him to be star of the week every game, but to put in a solid shift - his performances that I saw indicate he has good vision, an ability to play a dangerous pass, can get into attcking positions himself and works hard for the team - what more do you want form a 20 year old ? btw good luck to Norwich next season, glad for your loyal support that you got back up to the bigtime, gates of 20,000 in div 1 are something to be proud of.

i think's it time Wenger give him a chance and see if he can do it the P/L,don't know if you don't try.I thought he had a excellent game against the spuds in the LC and thought then he might have got his chance but was shipped out on loan.Henri always seem to get good reviews when on loan and can't be worse than Diarby,Denil**** etc so i can't see why he doesn't get a chance against the lower sides to begin with then we can judge him.

I have no doubt that once Clichy gets to Liverpool he then miraculously learns to tackle, toughen up, be good in defence. why ? because liverpool will coach him how to just as past Arsenal coached Ashley Cole and Lauren how to wheres today Arsenal taught Clichy to run up the line at 200mph sometimes with and sometimes without the ball and never once taught him how to time a tackle.

First off. A great big Good luck to the Canaries next Season. Lansbury for me is the type who has the qualities to become a Ray Parlour type of player. Lots of guts, drive and some technical skills and an eye for a few goals. Good in the physical dept too. Could be what older Arsenal fans would call a real 'Arsenal type' player. He really enjoying putting the Spuds to the sword in the CC and seems to have a good tough mentality that will endear him to the fans. Whether Wenger will deem him technically able enough to command a starting place, who knows. If i had to guess, id say probably not, yet we sorely need some of his type in the sqaud for sure.

I like Lansbury. I don't have unrealistic expectations of him though. He's never going to be the next Fabregas or Vieira, but I could certainly see him being the new Ray Parlour and I'd far rather have him in my squad than Diaby and Denilson.

Good idea for a series. Will certainly be keeping an eye out for the rest of the articles. I was impressed with Lansbury's performance against Spurs back in September and had heard he was a hit at Norwich, though I can't honestly say I've been watching much of his performances for Norwich

he is a total class player love to see him back here at Norwich next season. He know he has the talent and isn`t afraid to show the oppo fans (leeds away). Any chance you could sell him to us though instead of a loan. Well done Arsenal for letting him come here anyway and goodluck to the gunners in the future.

Lansbury actually got injured and when he came back Lambert didn't want to mess with the team too much but lansbury was consistently the first sub to come on usually on 60 minutes.

To be honest I think it was just Paul Lambert prefering to play his own players which saw Lansbury benched as I thought he was a class above what we had at the club.
