Gervinho: Announcement imminent?

Plenty of goings on in Goonerland last week. Firstly the news that we are very likely to have signed a new striker in the next 48 hours. Gervinho looks to be Wenger's first purchase in a summer of hopefully much needed restructuring. I really haven't seen enough of the striker who played a large part in helping Lille to win the French double last season, but it is fair to say that Gooners were hoping for a slightly bigger name especially as we were linked with the likes of Benzema in recent months. However I will hold judgement and give him a chance, as Chamakh saw last season, the EPL is a huge step up and it will be interesting to see how Gervinho adapts. One thing that was interesting to note in his stats was that not only did he score 15 goals last season but he also had 10 assists. Hence I do not think he will be prolific in the EPL, rather a team player who may strike a partnership with RVP. Incidentally this will probably free up Bendtner to leave a seek pastures new.

In a week where Manchester United and Liverpool have paid a combined £35 million for unproven English teenagers is it any surprise that Arsene Wenger is reluctant to dip into the English transfer market? While it is true Wenger was interested in Phil Jones and made a £15 million offer (if you believe the press) I think this may be a bullet dodged. Not because Jones is a bad player, on the contrary he looks very good (as does Smalling who Wenger also was beaten to by Man Utd), but AFC require experienced and proven defenders. Incidentally how impressive has Henri Lansbury been for the England U21s? Under Stuart Pearce they look solid if a tad uninventive, eager to chuck the long ball and rely on powerful strikers, but each time Lansbury has come on he has given the team the creative spark and touch of class that makes him stand out amongst his peers. I recall an earlier article on this website giving a mixed review for Lansbury, but a season long loan in the EPL possibly with Norwich could be the final development that this gifted player needs.

All relatively quiet on the Cesc to Barcelona front. Cesc is not forcing a move, Wenger is adamant that he will not sell, while the Catalan club look to have gone cold on paying above the odds for Fabregas. Cesc has handled this impeccably, and I would be very surprised if he is not an Arsenal player come August, although a lot can change between now and then. Another "contract rebel" is Nasri, which is one I am slightly more concerned about. The sooner he signs, the quicker AFC can move forward as he is a key player in our challenge for honours next season. The rumour is he wants the club to bring in more capable players, which isn't unreasonable but slightly disconcerting as another example of growing player power.

The new fixture list is out! And August promises to be a big challenge. Starting with Newcastle away, we then host Liverpool before going to Old Trafford. My initial thoughts were the horror of dropping points very early on but it is upon reflection an early chance to extinguish ghosts of last season, if we can win these games it sets us up nicely in terms of mental strength going forward. As I recall we didn't even turn up at Old Trafford last season. These games are also in between vital Champions League play off fixtures, so suddenly our drop in form toward the end of last season is catching up with us. Furthermore it would be a good idea for Wenger to settle transfer business sooner rather than later so that squad integration is in place before the vital month of August.

Finally the AST had their annual meeting with Ivan Gazidis last Monday. I'm still not fully sold on Gazidis or the strength of his relationship with Wenger, while the reasons for a ticket price increase were slightly debatable to say the least. But I do fully endorse what the UK's 2nd richest man said this week regarding the board and their level of ambition. Usmanov is a man who should be commended for not kicking up a fuss regarding his lack of boardroom presence despite owning nearly 30% of the club. I believe he genuinely cares for Arsenal and it will be interesting to see how his position of power changes in the next few months should AFC not make the appropriate signings our fans crave and we end us trophyless again.

You must be dreaming if the likes of Benzema coming to Arsenal. I think we could have had phil jones but Man U beat us to the price, why? Because Man U go and get the player/s they want and make sure that they win the EPL. If Arsenal knowing that Man U was also on Phil Jones and Arsenal wanted him (how bad, is the question?) but didn't then surely Arsenal can't spend the money that they say they can or have. So I won't be surprise to see some 2nd class player at Arsenal again and taking us fans for mickey mouse!

I agree with Richard that it's a real shame that Usmanov has been frozen out by this self interested only board. I dont want any individual to own Arsenal 100%, but having a more aggresive man on the board would be a good thing for the club as it appears that silent Stan just wants more of the same. We need somebody on the board to wake up the dinosaurs like Hill-Wood who are content with top 4 finishes for ever, just so long as the money keeps rolling in and the share prices keep going up. Hill-Wood always made a play about being a custodian of the club, when in fact he and the others on the board were lying and were simply custodians for the select few!!! Usmanov does not need to make money from his shares as he already has nearly double what Abramovich has, and hence he just wants to see the club win trophies in particular the league and the Champ League and as we all already know to our cost that it's highly unlikely we will be winning either anytime soon with our current stingy youth/bargain basement transfer policy set up. Having said that the problem is even deeper than this because as Richard said, I also simply dont trust Wenger's judgement anymore, and were he suddenly given a vast transfer budget he would still only acquire unknown players from the French league. In addition even if Wenger did suddenly change his ways by buying proven quality, it would still make no difference as he is not interested in his defence, would remain one dimensional with tippy tappy sideways football, would continue be out thought/fought by the likes of Pullis, Mcleish, Allerdyce etc and simply be bereft of any other plan when things dont work out, other than bringing on Bendtner after 70 mins and playing him on the wing!!!! The point being all the money in the world is of no use if the manager has lost his mojo and remains stuck in the past hoping against hope that by not adapting to the new surroundings ( Man City, Chelsea) that by the law of averages his youth plan/buying cheap project will work one day! In the real world in which we all live, it simply is not going to happen as we already know to our collective cost.

Crikey, I really hope Gervinho - assuming the club sign him and don't get gazumped by a high-roller at the death - is more a Drogba and less an Adebayor...

Not much to add really - Wenger will probably fart about as usual during the summer transfer window, waiting until one minute to midnight on 31st August if he possibly can, or buying more cheap rubbish that no one else is remotely interested in. Though, having said that, I do think he will be more active in the market this time - but I just don't trust his judgement anymore which rather nullifies the excited anticipation I would normally have. Also it is a pity Usmanov was over-looked as the man to take Arsenal forward. I know his 'business interests' may be rather dubious but I think he would be much more free with his money than silent Stan. I expect the David Dein conection was the sticking point - but again at least DD wants Arsenal to be the best and would not be content with the current lack of ambition.

The story of Gervinho. Gervinho signed by arsenal in 2011 leaves arsenal in 2013. Having scored a few goals and flirted with Real or Barca and believes his own hype. His ego is then pampered by Wenger which single-handedly fails to keep him at the club. He then States he "wants to win trophies". After having won feck all with Arsene Wenger and the arsenals he buggers off for a cut price fee. Arsenal sign a skinny untested injury prone French kid with an over inflated sense of himself and the whole process begins again. The end.
