Fresh Blood?

Scott Parker: Gunner or Lilywhite by August?

As we head into the heart of the summer months and the days and weeks go past the number of names being linked with the club we all support seems to grow and grow. Who are the names we are being linked with and how would they fare if they did pull on the famous red and white jersey come August. Below I have run the rule over a few of the possibilities and accessed the likelihood of the signing fitting into our current structure as a club.

Gervinho – Current club Lille (France)
The current figures being banded about for the Ivorian forward seem to be in the £10-12m bracket. So what could we expect from him if he did make the switch as many expect him to do over the next fortnight? He is 24 years old so there could be a decent selling on fee to come at that age making the signing more of a possibility. Last season He made a total of 42 appearances for his current club Lille and scored a total of 15 goals and nine assists for the French outfit in those appearances. He has made only three international appearances for the Ivory Coast but has scored two goals in those three games, so he does have one of the best goals to games ratios in international football, alongside Peter Crouch! He is only 5ft 8in so is no real force aerially, so even though he plays in France and has a similar goals to games record as Chamakh had in his last season playing in that country that is where those comparisons must end. He is not an out and out striker, he prefers to do his damage from the flank (mainly right sided) and is more of an Arshavin style player than a Chamakh. He is available and we would not need to break the wage structure at the club to bring him in so in reality he is a likely Wenger type signing and could show an improvement on the current back up options we have in place within the squad. As we seem to play Bendtner out of position on the wing I would see this signing as a like for like replacement within our current squad for when Barry exits this summer even though in reality these are two very different players.
Chances of signing happening 9/10

Eden Hazard – Current Club Lille (France)
This small framed central attacking midfielder is the creative force in the current Lille side. He is a current Belgium international who has amassed 20 international caps already (one cap for every year of his age) he has however yet to find the net on the international stage but does have five assists for his country. He played in a similar number of games for Lille as Gervinho last term scoring eight fewer goals than the Ivorian but setting up two more in comparison with a total of 11 assists. He is only 5ft 5in so certainly not going to shore us up from set pieces but if you are looking for pace and flair this is your man. The other number of teams interested in this one will be the stumbling block though as the prices being banded about have risen to around £25-30m in recent weeks. To be honest at that price you would look more strongly at Gervinho in comparison, which is what we seem to have done.
Chances of signing happening 3/10

Christopher Samba – Current Club Blackburn Rovers (England)
At a towering height of 6ft 4in and weighing in at a cool fighting weight of 200lbs, the man from the Congo is exactly what we were missing at the heart of our defence last season (and the season before that). He would add muscle, height and importantly Premier League experience to the current squad at Arsenal. He played 33 times for Blackburn scoring on four occasions and was a tower of strength at the heart of the Rovers defence that managed to avoid relegation mainly because of Samba gaining many man of the match awards in the season run-in. He would cost us around £10m and would also not break the wage structure we have in place. You could say a slightly cheaper alternative to Gary Cahill but at 27 years of age his sell on value would drop sharply in another season or two. Be prepared for this signing to be announced in the coming weeks as it should have been in January.
Chances of singing happening 10/10

Gary Cahill – Current Club Bolton Wanderers (England)
Gary is 3 inches shorter and around 40lbs lighter than Samba but would cost up to £5m more than the man from the Congo. Coming back from a long term injury the 25 year old made 33 appearances for Bolton last term and scored on three occasions. He did command the Bolton back line in his typically committed manner, even getting himself sent off at Arsenal in September. Gary has been handed three International caps so far in his career and more would follow if he did make a move to a top Premier League club. He would add something to the heart of our defence and does come with English grit and commitment traits. But at the reported £15m+ I am not too sure whether we would take this one ahead of Samba and at around £30m for the pair I personally can’t see both men heading to North London in the same summer.
Chances of signing happening 7/10

Karim Benzema – Current Club Real Madrid (Spain)
This French international striker managed to make a total of 41 appearances for his club last season scoring a total of 21 goals in the campaign. Karim does have the touch to go with his striking abilities as well making a total of six assists for his teammates. He has played 28 times for his country scoring nine goals at an international goals to games ratio of virtually one in three. His opportunities at Real may become fewer and fewer next time out as number one marksman Higuain did make a return to full fitness before the season ended. So don’t be fooled into thinking that because Karim made 41 appearances last term he is the number one striker at the club as he isn’t. This fact in my eyes makes the potential transfer more likely to happen. At the reported fee of around £30m Arsenal would almost certainly need to sell one of the star names within our current squad of players to go knocking on Real’s door for this one. Although do not be surprised if the club decide to make something of a marquee signing if and when one of our top names does go during the summer months. This one would then fit that marquee signing bill perfectly to keep the fans at bay.
Chances of signing happening 6/10

Scott Parker – Current club West Ham United (England)
Parker had a remarkably positive campaign last time out even though the Hammers ended the season with relegation to the Championship. He managed to enhance his own reputation and it must be said that if he had left the club before the season ended West Ham could easily have found themselves well adrift at the bottom of the table. With Parker captaining the side when fit, the Irons managed to keep their faint hopes of Premier League safety going until the second from last game of the season. Made a total of 32 appearances last season scoring five goals from his defensive midfield position. The main problem with this one coming off is his age, at 30 he would offer next to no sell on value whatsoever. With added interest from other teams including his close pal’s (Jamie Redknapp) dad’s (Harry Redknapp) team (Spurs) do not be overly surprised to see this possible target lining up in the white of Tottenham rather than the red of Arsenal come August.
Chances of singing happening 3/10

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – Current club Southampton (England)
At just 17 years of age the Saints’ attacking midfielder fits the bill perfectly in terms of re-sale price. He would not cost a fortune in wages and a fair whack of the reported £10m transfer fee would be dependant on future performances for the club. So in terms of possible value for money long term this one could be spot on. In terms of the here and the now this one would not be top of my list as the Saints were all the way down in League One last term. Alex made a total of 34 appearances scoring nine and setting up a further eight goals for his club. 34 appearances in League One does not add up to someone that will come straight into the Arsenal side and improve on things but this one could certainly be yet another signing for the future. Not too dissimilar to the signing of our current speed merchant Theo Walcott. Will Alex make us more likely to win the League next season? No. Does he fit the bill of a likely Wenger type signing? Yes.
Chances of signing happening 7/10

Willian – Current club Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine)
This 22 year old Brazilian left winger currently plays for Ukranian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk (the team we sold Eduardo to and then lost to in the Champions League last season). He is quick and slight in stature at just 5ft 7in. He would be more of a possibility if Nasri decides to sign elsewhere this summer but would not come cheap as the Ukranians have seemingly slapped a £22m valuation on his head. A more realistic fee in the region of £15m could be deemed as affordable to Arsenal though and we would see a decent amount of money spent on new blood to appease the fans if Nasri does leave the club. A reality check on this one though, he is yet to play a single game for his country and only scored four times in 36 appearances for Shakhtar last term, managing six assists in those 36 games. Does that represent value for money at £15m+? It might do if media reports are to be believed that Shakhtar want Denilson in exchange for him and value our Brazilian crab at a whopping £8m.
Chances of signing happening 5/10

Blaise Matuidi – Current club AS Saint Etienne (France)
At 24 years of age and with a French passport in his pocket it doesn’t take the brains of Britain to work out that this guy could be the answer to Arsenal’s current lack of competition in the defensive midfield department of the squad. Who knows, this guy could even give Song a run for his money which could see the Cameroonian improve on his consistency levels throughout the next campaign. Blaise managed a total of 34 appearances for his club last season without scoring a single goal although this attack shy midfielder did manage one assist (one of the few times he wandered into the opposition’s half). He has been likened to Claude Makelele and his scoring stats back this comparison up to the hilt. Blaise also has three international caps to his name and many experts expect this number to grow and grow over the next few seasons. The reported fee for this one could range from £12m+ but could this potential signing lead to the ‘killing’ of Emmanuel Frimpong in our current manager’s eyes and will this mean Arsene leaves this one where he is for now?
Chances of signing happening 5/10

How much will Arsene be parting with on any of the above named players? I feel the answer to this question will depend on who he parts company with over the next month or so. As I feel confident that when Mr Fabragas or Mr Nasri depart for pastures new we may well see one or two of the bigger transfer targets coming to North London this summer.

Absolutely no chance of us signing Benzema I'm afraid. It's so sad.Why can't we bid for him?Why can't we bid for Kaka? The positives both on the pitch and merchandising would be tremendous. But no.Why? Because they are both quality high profile players.Inspector Clueless prefers filling his shopping basket with 2nd rate francophone players who are then paid top wages. That deluded, clueless, tight fisted, miserly, parsimonious clown needs to go.

Okay! what's going on here? Benzema!try 0/10 because the minute that one gets serious our nearest rivals will perk up and offer him something other than the minimum wage. Very few of the above will be coveted by our nearest rivals and if they are they will then sign for those rivals anyway. Mainly due to our brilliant 'strict wage policy' which is a fabulous way to undermine deals in the balance. None of the above will come apart from Oxlade-Chamberlain obviously and perhaps Gervinho but I'm sure they can cock that one up if they give it a good try. This is great as Arsenal currently have 14 Midfielders in the 1st team squad. SO many in fact that Mr Frimpong can't have a number because we've run out! Still no links with any Goalkeepers! oh great, so when Szczesny breaks his hand on the first day of the season we are going to attack on 4 fronts with the choice of a Clown a Muppet or a forgotten Italian between the sticks!

@johnnyh totally agree, i think a lot of us have been saying for while now that our biggest problem lays on the training pitch and i just cannot see the stubborn fool changing his stance.

Vikram Singh Negi - Considering Benzema has scored a total of 23 goals for Real Madrid since joining them in 2009 I don't see how he could have scored 27 for them last season do you? As for the exclusives, Cesc going to Real Madrid after June 1st has been proved wrong how? I also stated that Samba was a done deal in January but we were not prepared to pay the £14m then that Blackburn were demanding. Expect both deals to be announced very soon. I personally feel that when Cesc etc exit Arsenal FC you may well see Arsene spend a few extra quid this summer as the club are begining to cotton on to how pi&&ed off a fair number of the fans are getting with how the club is being run. Of course if you looked back at the past five years then spending to appease fans has not been on the agenda but we are reaching something of a crossroads now so don't rule out Benzema etc coming in when some big names do exit the club.

A thought provoking article John the problem is we've seen all this smoke a mirrors speculation for so long everyone is sick of it and most of us OGL to some extent. I don't trust Wenger or Ivan the terrible negotiator to sign anyone any stature these days. Expect the usual 2nd raters such as Gervinho and kids like Jenkinson and Ox Chamberlain. To nobodies surprise except OGL the same result will follow as it has done for the last 5 years. I am desperate to be proved wrong though!

Good article, however I feel that your "chances of signing" ratings are a bit too high. I would love it if there was a 100% chance we'd be getting Samba and a 60% chance we'd get Benzema. I just severely doubt it. I'm not a cynical fan either, just bashfully honest. I hope I'm proven wrong!

Benzema scored 27 last term. Gervinho's assists were 10. Shakhtar have said tht they have rejected a bid for Costa, not Willian, as they dont wnt Denilson.

I tend to agree with Richard Ansell also. Arsene is accountable to no one at PRESENT and will do what he usually does, lose out on best players by trying to get them on the cheap and buying squillaci like players from France. I fear that if we`re drawing against a good team in the CL qualifier and get beat, which is possible, Arsene will say that we have less games to play now and to concentrate on the league. If that happens then it is up to the fans to make AW accountable. Sorry for being negative , but nothing has given me any reason to be optimistic that change is happening at The Arsenal

Cannnot see Wenger buying a specialist DCM. He's needed one for 3 years but his policy seems to be to have only one in Song then mend and make do when he's out with other types of midfielders. He'll play Ramsey and Frimpong there when Song is out. I hope we get Samba or Cahill but can again see Wenger missing out due to his own private value system, as opposed to the actual market value.

It’s hard to take anything Mr Evans writes seriously, given that he stated with 100% certainty that Cesc signing for Madrid back in May was a done deal, which was to be officially announced after the 1st June. Not quite a 10/10 for that one then…

  18. Gare Kekeke

    Jun 22, 2011, 14:19 #8983

I personally can't see many changes myself. Wenger has built a very young squad that he is very reluctant to add from the outside because he dosen't want to 'kill' some of the existing players. He'll sign no more than two players and that's it. He's more likely to promote from within, so expect to see the likes of Frimpong & Miguel next season. I'm not convinced either that many of the deadwood will also be shown the exit door, whether it's their own choice or not. Many of these guys are on huge sums of money and no other club in the world would be willing to play the likes of Bendtner, Denilson et al in excess of £50k a week. And the money grabbing board will ask for a lot of money in terms of a transfer fee too. Remember that we were expecting to sell Senderos two years ago but didn't because the club put a ridiculous price tag on his head and he eventually left the club on a free transfer a year later with money wasted on his wages for the six or so months prior to his (unsucessful) loan spell at Everton. In Arsene we rust.

    Jun 22, 2011, 14:13 #8982

Do you see any other top side in the world linked with any of the aforementioned players? I don't include Benzema in that comment as Wenger will never spend that kind of money on a player, even if he sells Cesc for 45m. Fact is, our standing and stinginess means we are no longer a choice destination for top international players. I'd personally love to see Kun Aguero or Bastian Schweisteigger come to Arsenal, but the truth is that even if we had the money to do it, and assuming Wenger had the balls to spend it, neither player would want to join us as we don't guarantee trophies.

Apart from Gervinho and a defender, i don't see us bringing in any first team players. One of two max of the deadwood will leave, and not all as we expect and want. We will have a good start to the season, struggle in November .. then go into January with several injuries .. cries will come out to ask Wenger to sign to which he will reply that if he finds value then he might .. We have an OK cup run and a few memorable Champions league games. Stay in the mix for second in the Premiership only to fall towards the end of the season. Fans go mental, the summer arrives .. Wenger promises signings .. The Euro Championships start, then the Olympics .. Wenger delays making any signings as he says he is scouting and wheeling and dealing .. New season arrives without Cesc .. and the story goes on .. soon afterwards Wenger retires with winning one extra cup, they name a bridge after him .. a new young manager comes in .. and we are told that he needs a couple of years to stamp his mark on the team .. Truth be told .. We have invested millions of pounds in having an academy and bringing in players .. The club will never pay top-dollar transfers .. We are in comfortable position in europe, where we don't have to invest millions to be at the top and yet still part of the exclusive round table of the big 16. The new policy will be to win a cup every couple of years, keep the fans buzzing, keep the media buzzing, start paying dividence.. There .. I saved the whole gooner nation writing redundant articles for the next 5 years .. Happy Days

Of course, if your pieces were to hold any credibility then the move of Fabregas to Real Madrid would have gone through on 1 June. Hmmmmm... This artcile is equally speculative nonsense. Gervinho will sign, the rest is based on tabloid rumour at present.

benzema 6 out of 10? it would be nice but there is absolutely no chance he would sign for us as he is used to winning things and i doubt we would pay his wages, chances of him signing 0/10. wenger will yet again try to find the answers to our problems in the 2nd rate french league.

What makes you think Wenger will make any signings of the Benzema type to appease fans? He hasn't done it the last few years when selling off star players, so there is no historical precedent for it. You seem very certain on Samba. What do you think the current hold up is? Wenger haggling on the fee?

We've already offered the crab to Shakhtar and the said no. I think we're gonna have trouble shifting the deadwood in Almunia, Denilson, Eboue, Bendtner, Rosicky purely becuase their wages are so high and they won't take a pay cut

With Wenger at the helm, John, I simply can not get excited over any possible signings. He may buy a striker, but will probably play him on the wing. A central defender or two plus more steel in the middle would be great but as I have said before, in Arsene I do not trust.

Surely, Matuidi or another defensively player would be useful to have in the squad while we see if Frimpong can progress from the promise he showed last pre-season before his untimely injury. Surely the challenge for Frimpong would be to show the player he can become and that may take a year on loan (hopefully in a top division) and not leave prematurely (although I doubt the accuracy of these reports). Interesting article BTW.

you should talk about AW ability to actually sign a good player and do it in some kind of smart, quiet but quick no fuss way. fact is AFC is today incapable of this because they are quibbling about the last dollar and this pisses everyone off, the selling club, the player, the agent and aw / afc comes across as a loser with no confidance about its future. its end june and what have we done despite we knew we needed to buy players since March ???? i am fed up with AW and AFC as we are not competitive in anything we do anymore. Dein slid Campbell from out under the noses of Man U back in 01. we have lost all our style and panache because we are run by Inspector Clouless !

Gary cahill and christopher samba are not good enough for arsenal. Cahill was useless in the fa cup semi final against stoke and in the league against chelsea when drogba destroyed him in a 4-0 win. While i watched samba get torn to shreds by berbatov in a 7-1 win when berbatov got 5 goals for united. The reason why there is nothing said about this is that these players are playing for lesser clubs and they are not under the same scrutiny as a player from arsenal. To me vermaelen djourou and koscielney are better players. I ask you would barcelona united or real madrid sign samba? I guarantee they would not. They only reason why people want samba is because he is a big lump. To me what needs to be done is for wenger to instill a defensive plan into the team, stop defending high up the pitch and put more work into to defending set pieces something which wenger stubbornly ignores. Stewart robson is right it is wengers defensive tactics that are at fault not so much the individual players.

Really don't care about a transfer target's onsale value, why is that even a factor when discussing players we haven't even signed yet? I want to know if any incoming targets are made of the right stuff to represent The Arsenal, not how much we might make from selling them down the track- that's pure Gazidispeak / Wengerspeak stuff. John, please don't tell me you have an Arsenal PLC share portfolio to support! We had a defensive block of six players for well over a decade that accrued next to naff all in transfer fees, but were the crucial backbone of the side, drilled the incoming fancy dans in The Arsenal way, and won a stack of trophies. No coincidence that they simultaneously earned the club pots of money through winning competitions, all of which more than matches any potential "onsale value" they might have raised.
