Members' Day with Michael Thomas, well sort of…

It’s Up for Gripes Now…

Damp Squib – Much like Arsenal’s summer in the transfer market?

How many people can say they spent a day with Michael Thomas at Arsenal? Okay, it wasn’t THAT Michael Thomas, but his five month old namesake. His mum (and fellow season ticket holder) Sarah brought young Michael to Members’ Day 2011 for an early opportunity to see the first team squad in action - or to be more accurate “inaction”.

To avoid queuing in the rain (last year the turnstiles opened 40 minutes late) I arrived at 11.40am, five minutes before proceedings were officially due to commence… and walked straight in to find the players already on the pitch! Cesc was there - but no sign of Nasri? There had been speculation as to whether Cesc would be there for the Official Team Photo (taken behind closed doors before we were to be allowed in). Rumour was that two photos would be taken, one with Cesc and one without (the latter with RVP as captain). However, the bad weather put paid to this (well we wouldn’t want the poor dears to get wet, would we?), and the photo-shoot was re-scheduled.

As with every other Members’ Day I have been to, the players worked through a relaxed training schedule (surprisingly Arshavin didn’t ask to come off early), followed by a short match and then a few footballs kicked into the crowd. We were unlucky enough to have the B52 bomber shooting at us; his inability to hit the target left us feeling like sitting ducks. Michael junior had the right idea, sleeping through most of the proceedings, but waking up just in time for a first meeting with Gunnersaurus and the Q and A session with Ray Parlour and Martin Keown. Because of the crowd Sarah and I had to stand at the back so that Michael didn’t get squashed, so we couldn’t hear properly what they were saying. This was a good time for Michael to glug down his bottle of milk, although after yet another same old Members’ Day I felt I needed something stronger.

Fortunately a steward told us that the Arsenal Ladies were a couple of blocks along, so we made our way there to meet unsung heroes like Faye White, Jordan Nobbs, Ellen White and Kim Little, along with the Ladies’ FA Cup (yes I know, silverware at the Grove, whatever next?). They chatted with the fans, posed for photos and signed our programmes. Arsenal men – please take note!

Before Members’ Day a group of Junior Gunners had been chosen to make banners for the players and then sit next to the Directors’ Box to watch the training. After training a few lucky ones were selected to attend either a Q and A or a signing session, but for the rest of us that was the end of our day. We spotted Ivan and Silent Stan lurking under a brolly by the tunnel (but not venturing onto the pitch), probably wondering who all those kids were sitting in their seats upstairs.

Michael needed his nappy changed; but instead of allowing us to take him to the baby change facilities (I didn’t know there were any there), a steward led us to a disabled toilet. However, this had no baby change facilities, so we would have had to lay poor Michael on the toilet floor. More reminiscent of Charlie George than our Anfield hero namesake! This wasn’t acceptable and we set off in the direction of the baby change, but were intercepted by the stewards and ended up in the First Aid Room. So Michael Thomas was on the treatment bench without ever having been on the pitch – Sarah and Donny will make an Arsenal first team player of him yet!

In terms of Members’ Day it was another Groundhog Day experience, but I enjoyed my time with Sarah and Michael. I wonder if Michael might be free for the first home game, appropriately against Liverpool. Given the team’s current problems we just might need him.

Thanks for all your comments. TC - we are all entitled to our opinion and if my article doesnt interest you then so be it. Next time - dont read it! I attend every members day and write it up in the Gooner afterwards, and each time its the same old story. This article was written in a way to demonstrate that but from a different perspective. And I DID spend the day with Michael Thomas! Members Day is meant to be fun for the kids but this year even my kids didnt want to go as they said it would be "boring". It is a great opportunity to get young fans into the stadium to see their heroes, just a bit more interaction and a bit more of a show would be good (which might give rise to a bit more spending in the Armoury!)

Marcia you forgot to mention that the steward and first aider were both moaning about being there since 9am and had not been given any food & drink. Not very good should they need to perform duties other than helping me make sure Michael didn't roll himself off the stretcher! All this whilst there were some others - shareholders - who were treated to free sandwiches and tea/coffee in club level!!! I've never spotted baby changing facilities at Arsenal before but they came across my eye as I escaped motherhood for the Emirates Cup spotted by blocks 10 and 24. Maybe there were the only ones and by block 17 there was not nearer ones or the stewards hadn't been informed of their existance. My second members day and I can confirm that it really isn't anything worth taking a day off work for. I already had the day off of the first one at the Emirates and used that as an opportunity to see the new stadium. This time it was a opportunity to take a photo of Michael inside the stadium watching the players without the reality of the important matchday! He even got his own ticket but the stewards only seemed to want to use the one as they let me in the wider turnstile carrying him. Sorry to bore you TC but Michael is just a baby not quite a toddler let alone a kid. Thankfully Terry the Gooner this meant no "I want this" from the shop for me!

TC - don't you mean "griping" reading? Yes, it's a different sort of moan from the current transfer gripes but the repetitive Members' Day letdown is another example of the club's failure to connect with the fans.

Marcia, is it true that Arsene Wenger is negotiating a deal for Young Michael? He has spotted the potential having seen him on the treatment table, and hopes to conclude a deal by the end of the transfer window...

@TC where have manners gone eh! Post not your cup of Tea eh..! Oh well jog on son... do something else, read something else, politely make a comment no need to act like a moron. I managed as the other comments have said to pick up some useful info namely dont bring my kids to members day - yet! and to ask the AST to lobby the Club administration to liven up the thing. Thanks Marcia makes sense to parents.

Bit harsh TC. I think making mention of the fact that Arsenal Ladies are approachable and show a proper Arsenal standard of class both on and off the field is important. Currently, it's AFC Ladies displaying the manners and conduct expected of players representing The Arsenal. The blokes need to pull their socks up sharpish.

I took my kids to this on Thursday and they loved it. I know members day is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a worthwhile PR exercise by the club which enables parents like me to take the children to the place their father goes every other week without it costing me an arm and a leg. It still cost a bit as you have to buy something in the club shop don't you?! Thanks for your story Marcia. Not necessarily upbeat, but makes a change from some of the depressing stuff on here about the lack of transfers - we're all down about that and I certainly don't need to read about it to rub it in!

Without doubt the most boring post I have ever read on this site. This is not about Arsenal, it's about a day out with a kid!!?? Gripping reading.........
