This club is a fiasco

And who exactly is in charge?

This club is a fiasco

Wenger: Is Le Boss the boss?

This club is a fiasco. One minute they’re obsessed with the “self-sustaining” business model, the next Wenger is happy to let Nasri’s contract run out and see him go for nothing. Who’s in charge? Is it Gazidis, Kroenke or Wenger? Why isn’t Kroenke saying anything? Why is Gazidis so incompetent to the point of letting Nasri’s contract go into the last year? Didn’t his predecessor Edelman say anything about Flamini or Edu?

What’s the point in keeping Nasri and Fabregas who clearly don’t want to play for us which will be absolutely counter-productive next season? Nasri never had any intention of signing a new contract and has played the board so easily. As for Fabregas, he’s been with us for eight years and wants to go home and play for the team he supports? I cannot blame him for that.

Wenger has had three months to do something about a centre back and has done diddly squat, f all. I am fed up with it. Do the board ever stand up to him? Do they ever say “Arsene do you know what, the fans might be right”. Wenger’s response is to insult the fans by telling them they know nothing about football. Was anyone on the board saying to Wenger at the end of last season that “this isn’t good enough”. Wenger insulted our intelligence last season by telling us that this was squad was his best ever (thereby insulting Henry, Vieira, Pires, Adams, Bergkamp, the list is endless), then he said we could win all four trophies and then at the end he tells us “now you see how difficult it is to finish in the top 4”. If he thinks we fell for his garbage last season then he really is stupid. Gazidis to me is at best Wenger’s puppet and worst absolutely incompetent. As for Stan Kroenke, he was able to find £400million to acquire the shares, it’s about time he said to Wenger “here’s some money, now go spend it”. We are at a massive crossroads for the future of this club, nobody should be under any illusions about it.

Oh and as for Gael Clichy saying he left Arsenal because he was tired of being a loser, well it’s breathtaking. Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t he a part of the team that failed so spectacularly between March and May? As I said to a Man City supporting friend of mine; I look forward to him making mistakes at crucial moments that cost City points, goals and the title like he did in February 2008 at Birmingham when he ran away from the ball!

Hey the people in the hierarchy at Arsenal are not mad and neither are they deaf. And Fabregas and Nasri are the pivots of Arsenal and we cant let them go without their perfect replacements and that is what Wenger is doing. Be patient.

And look whos injured in the Benfica friendly - RVP, vermaelen, Gibbs. Well there's a surprise. Anyone seen Walcott and Diaby ! Same old same old. And still we only sign untried potential. It's Gazidis who is at fault - not taking the possible transactions away from Wenger and getting it done - a la Dein.

Theopants - Well replied sir :-) but.... There is a difference between having a long term strategy to compete, which included moving grounds, investing in youth etc and saying Citeh and United have bought players X and Y and spent millions therefore so should we. Which is the frustration the poster was expressing, which by the way I do appreciate. But serioulsy who has got a good deal for a player that we would want? Downing, Adam, Carroll, Jones, Young? I wouldn't have minded Downing at Arsenal but not for £20m, Carroll as well but for £35m? No? Ashley Young? No thank you. My guess is that we will bring in one or even 2 centre backs and then additionally replace Nasri/fabregas depending upon who goes or stays. I'm looking forward to Ramsey getting a run. Nobody is giving Wenger any credit for that buy which was clearly a Fabregas insurance policy. I'm hoping the Mata deal isn't dead either. I'm guessing we'll go back in with a £25m'ish bid after Fabregas leaves - when he finally goes and this could all happen in the last day or two of the window. Pretty exciting.

Absolutely spot on! Couldnt agree more!! I will always support the club, but not necessarily its manager. I dont mind us getting fourth place as long as the players always give 100 % (which is now a rare sight) and if the board and our manager make any sense (even more rare!) in their public comments to the fans' justified reactions.

hey, someone who uses twitter, send a tweet to Fabregas and tell him to keep the 3mil of his own money he's offering up to help secure his move to barce. Tell him to instead put in an official transfer request. Call an official news conference in spain and say that he loves arsenal but he has completely lost any belief in wenger's ability to manage a competative club. Say that he will stay at arsenal if arsene wenger is removed from the manager position. If not, then he wants to go to barcelona. If he ends up going to barcelona and any arsenal supporters give him any grief, he can just re-iterate that he loves arsenal but he no longer has any belief in wenger's ability to manage a competative football club.

if arsenal asked Mr usmanov for a £60m loan with a grace period of 3 years before any loan repayments had to start he would give it in a heartbeat because he is a fan. he can stipulate that the loan is specifically to purchase players and no other uses (like directors or managers bonuses) so therefore what the heck is going wrong ?? we have 2 billionaire shareholders where some financial gymnastics like interest free loans can easily be done and we are not doing any of it ! who is it in Arsenal who is stopping us challenge for trophies ?? to challenge for the title we all know that we needed to add substantial quality to the squad this close season but the clear signal seems to be that Arsenal have already decided to try to finish top of 2nd league which is Spurs, Liverpool, Everton, Villa i.e. we have decided to not even bother competing with man u, chelsea and man city, we are going for 4th spot. it is a shambles

Guys come on Gael never said anything like it!!!!! He was asked why this decision and he simply replied" I needed a new start and a new challenge" he was then asked " was it annoying to not win anything for the last few years?" and he simply answered " yes it was as from the first day of the season everyone is working so hard until the last day and it's difficult not to win it at the end" then asked " do you think city could win anything this year?" and he said yes from the last 3 years city have been improving year after year and I can see us winning something as long as we are lucky with injuries and focus for the whole season" that's all he said and of course the news papers TWISTED it so we people could understand that's he talked bad about the club but he never did!!!!! And I belive he was one of our best player from decembre to the end of the season so take a look at when arshavin has been on the bench and u will see that clichy was always good when not playing behind this guy!

The truth is the board does not want to spend any money, hence Wenger is the best coach for them. He spends no money on signing, makes huge profits for the club and even takes the blame for the failures. If I was a savvy investor - as Kroenke is - I would have Wenger as coach, as long as he wants the job.

The club waits till the end of the transfer window because they are a bunch of tight c****.Surely the plan should be to sign the players early so they can integrate with their new team mates in pre season. But not at Arsenal we would rather save the odd million even though the club charges the highest ticket prices in the world.I can see us picking up 1 or 2 pts from the first 3 games and getting knocked out of the CL.Just because of our stubborn manager's unwillingness to spend money. Then the alarm bells will be ringing in Colorado

Staurt L totally agree. How has Wenger become so powerful that he is unsackable regardless of the last 6 seasons. We have a manager who can do what every he wants with no one telling him he is wrong. Both Cesc and Nasri know as all us fans do we will not win the title ever again under Wenger as for the CL just look at his record in it.Buying players from Charlton and Costa Rica is now the height of our expectations.Everyone knew we needed a CB this summer everyone except our dopey manager.Pat Rice is still at the club as Wengers nodding dog and we still dont have a defensive coach.

Elliott I am starting to feel like you but am prepared to wait until the start of the season and at most to the end of the window. The only reason I am optimistic is the clear statement of a busy summer in the market by AW and Ivan the terrible ceo/puppet. After the ourpouring at the Villa and Fulham games and re the laughable price rise, I don't see a situation where investment is not made to some level. The simple reason is the clear risk of dropping out of the top 4. I am surprised that the business has not been concluded as however as with the Udinese tie mixed with the tough league start plus the "injuries" to Fabregas and Nasri, the nightmare scenario could be upon us by the end of the window. If acquisitions are not made at the back I see us conceding 20 plus goals from set pieces again and over 40 goals in the league for a third consecutive year, at the stage your fiascofic pronouncement would be apt!

    Aug 06, 2011, 16:47 #10759

Theopants - Ah, the 'keeping up with Jones's principal'. You can't run a business, or a club on what others are doing. You have to have a business strategy for yourself and execute on it. Again, I realise that it's boring for some to hear, and some will not want to hear it, it doesn't exactly fit with the romance of the game or the passion but if you enter into business deals (that's what a transfer is) without knowing the full impact over a 3 -5 year period you will over reach yourself. Ask yourself, who has got a good deal so far? United with Ashley Young? Liverpool with Downing etc? Carrol, for £35m! Madness. Now if we are after Cahill and Jagielka for example - both Bolton and Everton need the money. We know that and they know that. We need the defenders. They know that. We bid low and they hold out for more. This is where the transfer window comes in. It's an articial concept. Owen Coyle and David Moyes will be wanting to bring players in but can't afford to do it without generating funds. We know that. So you negotiate and you wait until somebody blinks, if they blink, and you have to be prepared to walk from a deal if it isn't right for you. Would you pay for £20m for Jagielka? Seriously? If it were your own money? And It's £20m plus his salary & bonus costs every month over 3 years. I wouldn't. They are trying to negotiate towards a deal that all parties accept, say £14.5m. It takes time. Arsenal fans would soon be complaining if we spent big and it didn't work. Why? because we woud have committed to an expense that is beyond what we could sustain. That strategy can work for a short while if you win something (equals extra revenue)but can't work in the longer term. At best you have to sell some of your assets, cut costs and put prices up to recover. At worse you run the risk of going to the wall like Leeds and Portsmouth. Sorry for the long reply but it isn't as simple as people think. I would love us to have had 2 centre backs in place, a defensive mid-field player and to have resolved the NAsri Fabregas situation but sometimes having a bit of patience can work for you rather than a desperation to get players in.

... I was thinking this last night and would love some fellow fans opinions: I love Arsenal I really do (so dont tell me to F-off to Chelsea or city) but the general state of football is messed iup. IMO Chelsea and now City are killing the game. FFP will not work, City have already took the mickey out of that idea and the general state of money being thrown around is a joke. Now we have Arsenal who are hell bent on alienating their fans, making false promises, stinging us for price hikes (I am an ST holder), never inversting on the team and this summer has been the one for me and many others that are turning us away from the club - basically 'Where has our Arsenal gone' My question is if fans said enough is enough and formed their own team ala AFC Wimbledon or FC United how many of the fans would be tempted to follow? I never thought of it before, but now I seriously think I would as it would be great to have football back at a purer level as opposed to the money money money orientated crap that top level pro football is today

One of the biggest problems is Arsene's stranglehold on the club. He is not only manager, but also club accountant, scout, teaboy etc, etc his role is now too blurred as the board have allowed him to have too much say in all issues. His only job should be to manage the team and to identify his new signings. It should be down to the board to ensure the funds are there to run the club in the correct manner and as two of the worlds richest men are our major shareholders that shouldn't be too difficult (using their business acumen not necessarily their wealth)

Nasri/Fabregas:- "Rats fleeing a sinking ship" springs to mind! make of that what you will? But as i have said before regarding players wanting to leave to "challenge themselves and achieve things!" Surely the bigger challenge and greater achievment would be to stick where you are and take this club back where it belongs. Im not saying we will win the league but we will have a better chance if you stop whinging and whining and start playing for a living!!! Nasri is obviously not up for the fight and purely motivated by money, (and lets face it thats the only thing most players these days are interested in!) and as for Fabregas, i for one am fed up with people saying, poor cesc deserves to go... arsenal holding him back from achieving his dream...! If he wanted to play for that bunch of catalonian cheats why sign an 8 year contract?, in fact why sign for Arsenal at all? He was a Barca player in the first place wasn't he??? Well in case you don't know where im going with this rant i'll tell you why, GREED and MONEY!!! "poor players"... WAKE UP GOONERS!

    Aug 06, 2011, 14:10 #10750

The hypocricy is staggering. As mentioned above, how does holding a wantaway player to the last year of his contract and missing out on £20m+ tally with a sustainable business model? Of course the answer would be to buy the players and create the team that would make Nasri want to sign a new contract, but we know that's not going to happen. And Wenger was talking again yesterday about only buying not quality, but super quality players. Are Chamakh, Koscielny or Squillaci super quality players? Koscielny is decent and Chamakh may turn out to be a useful squad player but that's all. Just heard that Steve Rowley is at the Birmingham game to watch Scott Dann. The same Scott Dann who missed the last four months of last season with a hamstring injury (just wait till our medical dept get hold of him, he'll miss years not months). Guess the club think they can get him on the cheap as Birmingham have got big financial problems. You couldn't make it up.

So, we face a tough Champions league qualifier, Liverpool, Man united, and Newcastle away all in the month of August. On top of that, Cesc hasn't kicked a ball in anger, and Nasri is on his way out of the club. What do Arsene and the board do? Jack ****, that's what they do. Not good enough! We'll be lucky to win one game in August, and that'll be the home leg against Udinese.

Why do the Arsenal fans fail to see a bigger act of incompetence and stupidity which was in building a 60,000 seated stadium when it SHOULD have been 100,000,they had done the experiment at Wembley in the champions league and filled it twice with virtually their own fans.as a boy I stood in crowds bigger than 60,000 at Highbury where we had not won diddly squat for years .

Totally agree. We were told by Gazidis Wenger had considerable money to spend. Now it seems as if it is all dependent on players leaving. We keep being promised he is doing all he can to sign players, but something is clearly going wrong behind the scenes. The first 11 is still strong but the players in reserve aren't strong enough. Le Boss, is replacing like for like in his squad, it was shocking but honest hearing him say he likes light players. But unfortunately these kind of players cannot, do not remain standing when the going gets hot, rough and tough in the Premier League. All the pretty patterns we create looks nice, but the fact is, it's of no practical use when the opposition parks the bus and wait to hit us in the last 15/20 minutes of a game. Any new additions to the squad is better done at the start of the season, as not many players can immediately switch on in a new team. But Wenger cannot resist looking for another Squallaci in the Bargain Bucket at the close of the season. Maybe he dabble and find Denilson and Bendtner in there.

I understand your frustration, I’ve been a staunch Wenger supporter from the beginning and have cut him a lot of slack in the last 6 years based on the financial restraints caused by the Emirates development, with two billionaires now owning the club between them finances are not the major issue in as much money is available and as commendable the self sustaining model is, being the only!! Major powerhouse club to adopt this position is leaving us lagging behind the rest of Europe’s top teams. The football world has cottoned onto Wenger’s penny pinching ways, as soon as he shows an interest in a player it’s made public knowledge, his keen eye for talent makes him an unofficial talent scout and pushes the player’s price up. He’ll ague over the last pound for “value for money” but more often than not lose the player to the team that pays the extra few million, then we have the selling side which you pointed out the club constantly leaves itself in a weak bargaining position by letting players run their contracts down losing the millions he tries hard to save when buying a player. The Fabregas situation is strange, I have no problem with Cesc wanting to play for his childhood and family club after eight years with us, he kept tight lipped and never publically caused any trouble, as much as I hate the thought of him leaving before reaching his peak and leading us into the brave new world I understand and respect his wishes. What I don’t understand is the asking price £40 million when on the open market he’s worth £50 million, to compound this Barca are taking the piss by offering £30+ mill, again money wasted. And what of the current crop, like everyone else I was glued to arsenal player for the pre season games , I’ve even subscribed to ESPN so I don’t miss anything that may give me hope for the upcoming season, my take on the squad is up front RVP and Gevinho fine, Chamakh and Vela have no right wearing an Arsenal shirt and what the **** is Wenger thinking with that pair, we have masses of talent in midfield except Arshavin will be a liability again, the replacements for Cesc and Nasri will be crucial though, in defence the right back position with Sagna backed up by Jenkinson seems fine, at left back with Gibbs backed up with Traore may cause problems, Vermaelan needs aerial help in the centre back role, I’d keep Koscielny add Samba and Cahill, Szczesny in goal needs to move his feet and stop diving sideways from standing starts, and how quickly he can dive low to his feet? We won’t have long to find out, prem league strikers soon find weaknesses, he’s full of confidence but a few bad reviews will put pay to that, the jury’s out on him. With two new world class forwards, two new powerful centre backs and the best replacements for Cesc and Nasri money can buy we’ll be a major major force again. By the end of August our season may be steam rolling in the correct direction and all will be forgiven Mr Wenger or we’ll be out of the champions league and trailing the front runners in the premiership and I don’t even want to think what my feelings will be if that happens.

Agree with most of what is said here. There really are no excuses for the delays in sorting out the personnel issues - after all they must have been readily apparent before the transfer window opened. Signing players is not like agreeing a deal on the US debt ceiling. The issues are simple really and to suggest otherwise is to mislead or try to placate the fans. After all every club and player has a price - which is more or less it as far as transfers are concerned.

Gooner S, So how comes other clubs don't seem to have those problems to the same extent? But the real point is that we should have had our targets identified and be ready to go from the second the last season ended. Yet here we are, almost 3 months later and just one week away from the start of the new season and, despite all the big words from Wenger and Glazidis, we're still waiting!!! I'm sorry but, complicated business or not, that shows a level of indecision and incompetence worthy of a lower league side, not a supposed giant like Arsenal.

u know how it goes, wenger thinks he is GOD..he is like a spin doctor.he used the fabregas smoke screen again to go through the transfer window & this year we are weaker than ever before.. last year we managed to be in 4 competitions without winning a bean, this year we couldnt even win our own dodgey emirates cup (u feeling me?) now his boys want out,(after telling us his team was the best ever, self belief blaaaah blaaah blaaaah..) the club is ajoke the board is a joke wenger is a joke the chairman is a joke by the way,why is nasri a villain while it is understandable for fabregas to return to the club he supports????? WHAT A LOAD OF DRIBBLE..we support arsenal & with that support we support fabregas pocket too. why did he sign the extension contract if he love barca so much? why is he our captain? what has he won for the club in his time? isnt he one of the chokers as well? none of these jokers are worthy to be in the arsenal shirts

Doing business takes time. Especially, if legal are involved. I realise that that isn't what you or anybody else wants to hear but it is fact and I speak from experience. You need to demonstrate a need and a benefit (business case), you need to demonstrate the financial business case, you need to perform due dilligence that the deal you are going after you can afford, then when you engage with another third party (and possibly more) you have to negotiate - this is an iterative process. Then when you reach agreement, if you reach agreement, you draw up contracts. These contracts have to be reviewed meticulously. If you don't reach agreement you have to start again somewhere else, this is an iterative process. Then you might get an agreement! Boring, I know for the average football fan but that's the way it is. If you've ever bought a house you'll get some sense of what I'm talking about. But unlike with most businesses or indeed buying a house you have a fixed window to contend with with creates an artificial market and drives up costs. And it is all down to Wenger? No! Wenger will state his need and it is Gazidis that will go and get it and do the business stuff. Wenger didn't insult our intelligence last season, not in my view. He was trying to motivate the squad he had. He can't come out and say we aren't good enough. That is a self fulfilling prophecy and poor management/leadership. You have a good point about Clichy it applies to virtually the whole squad though I would exempt Van Persie and Wilshere, possibly Sagna as well.

Spot on with your assessment.Unfortunately,I can't see anything changing until complete meltdown occurs as it did with George Graham. The fisrt half of this Season will run in a similar fashion to that of Liverpool last Year. The stupidity of our situation, however, is that it could easily be remedied. An established EPL Centre Back and Central Midfielder alongside an experienced Goalkeeper and a new exciting and dynamic Midfielder to replace the outgoing players.I don't have to name names as we all know who they are!

"As for Fabregas, he’s been with us for eight years and wants to go home and play for the team he supports? I cannot blame him for that." Agreed - he's given us loads in those 8 years and can certainly understand if he thinks his chances of lifting silverware are somewhat limited given the current situation at AFC. A player like him shouldn't be wasting his talent by being surrounded by mediocrity.

All Arsenal fans are tired, that is true, however until fans begin to take matters intotheir own hands and let their voices be heard in the streets and by absenting themselves from games, Arsene and the board will see nothing wrong. Does Arsene and the board read these posts? dont know. The only way they will take the frustration of the fans seriously is if they speak with their feet and public protests. Like Newcastle and Aston Villa fans did. It may not have got them what they wanted, but now everyone knowswhat that is.

"As for Fabregas, he’s been with us for eight years and wants to go home and play for the team he supports? I cannot blame him for that,." And there lies the problem. Why sign a contract? What about every other player? When is Ryo going home, oh i forgot and Scez? I believe that is an easy excuse and we bought it from the start. i never heard Vieira, Pires,Bergkamp, Cantona, Hasslebank, kanu, the list is long talk about going back and please dont tell me this is different cos is Barca. Bull****. What a captain. Am so ashamed

Does Kroenke have a clue about football?.If he did surely he would ask Wenger why the **** havent you signed any players when we only finished 4th last season.Wenger has failed for 6 seasons and there is no end in sight. One player in one out is that you idea of an active summer in the transfer market Mr Gazidis?

This club is in massive decline on and off the pitch, i think 4th place is the best we can hope for and that wont be easy, i think Mr Wenger is in for a tough ride this season. If we fail to qualify for champs league expect armmagedon......

Chill, just chill. A lot of the things you write are conjecture, fed to you by the gutter press and hater blogs. You cannot possily know what is going on behind the scenes, the gutter press can't and the haters can't.
