The Grand Canyon: Is that Old Trafford in the far distance?

I try very hard to be a positive person but this summer has again drained me of all of my hopes and expectation for the new season. We were promised lots of comings and goings but a combination of penny pinching and poor quality players on star quality wages means that we approach the season with virtually the same squad that floundered last season. Gervinho looks like a promising player but his signing does not address the major problem areas of the squad and the signing of Oxlade-Chamberlain doesn't do that either. Why is it Arsene is happy to pay £12m for a 17 year old who has played a handful of games in the third tier but will not stump up £20m for a proven Premier League defender? He is only adding weight to the opinion that we are a selling club that buys unpolished diamonds to shine them up and ship them out for a profit. This may be a good sustainable model but it will never fill a trophy cabinet.

During pre-season we have seen a reoccurrence of the same old problems, the inability to hold a lead, the lack of a leader at the back and once again we approach the season with several of our key players injured. The injury to Vermaelen may see us starting with Djourou and Koschielny at Newcastle. I think at best these two should be back up and that we should never be in a position where we have to start the pair together. Squillaci has been a liability since day one and we face the prospect of having to start with him if Djourou succumbs to one of his frequent injuries.

It also appears that we will have no choice but to start the season with a badly out of form Chamakh in the lone striker role. With the injuries to RVP, Theo and the imminent departure of Bendtner we are left woefully short up front. Is Gervinho ready to play there, I'm not sure but it shows just how much we pin our hopes on the injury prone RVP. The midfield has also become a problem area, with our captain and talisman looking to foreign fields, Nasri chasing the highest bidder and Jack carrying an injury. All of this makes poor reading especially if you chuck in the fact that we are also woefully short in the left back position. Gibbs just doesn't look good enough to be first choice and Traore is poor.

These circumstances would be bad at any time but with the first five fixtures we have it is an absolute disaster. Even if we do bring in reinforcements what chance will they have to assimilate in to the squad in time? If we are to avoid total disaster we must sell Cesc and Nasri and make bold signings immediately. The £60m this would generate on top of our existing transfer kitty should be more than enough to bring in two centre halves, a left back and another striker. Surely it will be better to have people who want to play for the club, ones that are committed to the cause. I know the transfer window is open until August 31st but our season could be virtually over if we are knocked out of the Champions League or have less than five points from our three league games, so the time to act is now.

Surely Arsene can see this? His "Best Ever Squad" myth was blown out of the water last season and the fact that so many of that squad are now surplus to requirements just underlines what a stupid statement it was. I cannot remember looking forward to a season less and I have lived through some lean times as an Arsenal fan. The thought of going back to playing second fiddle to Liverpool and Spurs fills me with dread and that is on top of Man U, City and Chelsea continuing to move out of our reach. It's time to show that the move to the new stadium was done to close the gap on Man U not let it turn in to the Grand Canyon.

The bookmakers are supposed to know but William Hill has Arsenal tomorrow at 23/20 favourites. I hope sincerely to lose but reality says at least £5 on Newcastle at 13/5.

Anyone who says '**** off down the Lane' can't surely be a true Gooner as ANYONE can see the problems that are present at our once great and proud-to-support club. I'm absolutely dreading the start of this season its going to be so painful to watch but to be honest I care less and less about the club the more Wenger & Gazidis continue to ruin it. In Arsent We Rust.

Seen this all too often. He will make minimum amount of signings, and then when the transfer window closes will say 'We tried very hard to do something, even bidding for Jagielka, but it didnt happen'. Just wait and see.

I am worried. Whilst we watch teams build, rebuild (in man u's case)and even liverpool are buying (albeit mediocre overpriced players), what is Wenger actually doing to give us any hope we can compete? Wenger needs to put his hands up, admit he was wrong and spend the money. The season is days away and we are still blowing money on teenagers- we need experience and strength- this season will be the hardest in the league yet and we are all paying price hikes in sheer hope it won't be a disappointment. We are being taken for a ride by the club we love...and not in a good way

I have never ever dreaded the start of a season before now. Wenger and Gazidis promised lot's of comings and goings - okay so the useless Denilson is gone (for now) but clowneboue and bighead bendtner are still here earning their £50k a week.... Wenger by making an offer for Jagielka has admitted that we need a CB - something we've all been saying for 2 seasons at least...and yet rather than follow up his pitiful initial bid, he now goes after the cheaper - and less able option of Scott Dann...WTF!??? Wenger was the one who brought many changes to Prem (and British) football with his approach to training and the style of football played, but he seems to have become a victim of his own genius, all the other clubs have now adopted many of his methods and approaches, whilst also embracing the new money based approach to progress and development and yet he now seems incapable of change - he HAS Lost The Plot... It is Sad - becaise I remember all the good times he brought and would prefer he walked away with his head held high and the blessings of the fans rather than becoome a laughing stock and be hounded out by the fans

Couldn't agree more with GaryFootscrayAustralia, we've been a total utter shambles since Dein left, anyone who heard his interview with 5Live Sportsweek last Sunday will know he still lives for our club. There's no way he'd let Barcelona take the piss with Fabregas the way they seem to be doing. Dein would've told them straight, this is the asking price, take it or leave it. £50 million seems about right for young Cesc, espicially in the light of what players like Torres, Berbatov & Downing have all sold for. Why the feck are Hill-Wood, Ivav, et all bending over backwards to allow another club to get one of our players (the captain. no less) on the cheap. Thirty million for one of the best players in the world is an utter joke & continues to tell this season ticket holder he is so glad someone else is using it, yet again, for another season. To those of you who will part with your cash, good luck to you, sincerely. To those who say, good riddence or the usual f--- off to the Lane, I've been a regular since 1980. remember Hawley and Hankin up front versus the Spuds in the 80,s anyone ?? so I know all about supporting my team. I'll continue to do so, avidly, passionately, but from afar, and without giving the fecking idiots running MY club,a single penny.

Wenger and Gazidis, the Chuckle brothers of North London really are a blight to our club. I never thought I would say this but hopefully the fat Russian will take over. Only then might we start acting like the big club our board said we would be when moving to the sporting white elephant. What a crock they all are.

Management of Gazidis and Wenger? In any other business they'd have been sacked for gross negligence and dereliction of duties. If I do my job wrong I know I'll get a warning. The board won't tell him so we have to starting on Tuesday evening.

Now we all see Wenger has lost he's way 12mil for a bearly 18 year old.when he's priorities should be getting two f####g centre halfs in (Cahil&Jagielka). As ye have said price increases in tickets which is a slap in every one's face.We have to face fact's with all other rival's strenthing we could be looking at europa leaghe football next year which has not been an easy trophy to win as liverpool found out. What we need is fresh start Wenger to step down with some dignity in tact unless he can prove us all wrong by winning a trophy (pl&cl) and the board to grow a back bone and say enough is enough there is Wenger replacements out there is if thats the road we have to take.

Don't disagree with the notion of "Buy now" but knowing Wenger he will acquire only more predominantly midfield attack minded midgets with acne, and not buy where it's most needed. Hope he proves me wrong, but yet again it looks like he is going for the cheap option rather than the quality option if the press stories are accurate re Dann from Brum. Why does that not surprise me in the slightest given his recent history with Squilachi and Sylvestre!

The club has left us all with more questions than answers this close season & talk has so far proved to be very cheap.Come saturday night at Newcastle let's get behind whichever players that WANT to play for the club.If we don't sign players and it all goes wrong again the man in charge will surely carry the can & the board should also be slaughtered.Sad it's come to this but if anyone want's cheering up listen to the remix of Eminem song Stan doing the round's featuring AW & Stan K. so funny but the words are true!

@ Author You say the 60M we will receive from the sale of Cesc and Nasri and "the existing transfer kitty should be more than enough to bring in two centre halves, a left back and another striker" We'll unfortunately we dont have any more money in the transfer kitty, we've spent approx £11m on Gerv, £12-15M on AOC and £1m on Jenks, I'd say thats pretty much all we had in the kitty. And according to reports we are only getting £35m for Cesc and at best £22m for Nasri. Not even £60m for both. No way can we afford exactly what we need as described by you (of which I wholeheartedly agree) with less than £60m. Especially the quality we need. It seems we may have to be happy with mid table mediocrity this season. At least until AW leaves.

For all those of you who haven't realised or are unwilling to acknowledge that AFC is being run as a bank and not a football club, here's a statement from Ian Wright in 2007 regarding David Dein's departure from AFC: "I know the players aren't happy. I know Thierry Henry's not happy. We're talking about a man who goes into the dressing room after every single game, shakes every player by the hand and who knows all the youth team players. I know this for a fact that the manager and the players are 100 per cent behind David Dein and I can see real repercussions coming off the back of this." We know Wrighty's got a big mouth but he says what he sees and always speaks from the heart.

There may still be rabbits in Wenger's hat yet. With a slim timeline of 20 days fast ticking away, key transfers could be achieved should there be a will. But this is exciting,as finally CHANGE will come,no matter what happens. Either way,put this season aside, the manager will finally discover how to win silverware with new found way or new manager/owner next season. CHANGE/miracle is about to happen. Goodbye frustration?

Hear hear Mick, Wenger is making his bed and he will soon lie in it. It is a myth that he is the best man for arsenal and i'm sure another manager will show us what we've been missing...we are the arsenal and can always attract players and compete purely based on our resources and heritage...we don't cease to become a great club overnight but under wenger we are fast approaching the tottenham scales and I for one wont stand for it. We've seen the disgraseful london riots but i'm beggining to think tha 'peaceful yet loud and forceful' protests will be the only way to get rid of these business wankers (accountant Gazidis and over the hillwood senile git) who are ruining our club. As for wenger, it is now confirmed that the man is simply insane who stubbornly lives in arse land...GET RID AND FAST.

Wenger out? Never ever have I been this disillusioned. What is wrong with this club? Is this what Gazidis meant with "pride". I'll really feel sorry for all of you who payed for a season ticket. You're in for a ride thats for sure. I feel physical sick...
