The end or the beginning?

Is this evening’s game crucial or what?

The end or the beginning?

Kaka: Might eliminating Udinese mean he arrives?

It’s a strange time be an Arsenal fan eh? I don’t know about you, but I’m well on the way to coming to terms with a season of mediocrity, criticism and well, disappointment really.

There is little doubt that our current woes have been brought in to focus all the more by Man Utd and Man City’s start to the season, both of whom have spent heavily, and in many cases early, this summer, purchasing experienced and proven players – while United also seem to have a handful of excellent young players, (Jones, Cleverley, Welbeck et al) some of whom have come back to the club following time on loan. It doesn’t bode particularly well for the other challengers does it?

While Chelsea apparently tie up the signing of one time Arsenal target Juan Mata, who has apparently said that he chose them as he wants to win the title (ouch), all eyes are on our game tonight in Italy.

It still seems incredible that it’s come to this and we all know that we shouldn’t be starting our Champions League campaign until next month but there we are, it is what it is - and it is a game of genuinely huge importance. It’s hard to argue, I think, that it isn’t a massively pivotal one for the short / mid term prospects of the Club and will shape exactly how that future looks, maybe for the long term too.

Let’s assume for a minute that we go out against Udinese. This will impact Arsenal FC in a variety of ways, not least of which would be financially and then in terms of attracting the kind of talent we clearly need to bolster the squad and turn us in to genuine contenders. It would also give the media a great opportunity to sharpen their knives and call Arsene’s own future in to question and, I’ll be honest with you, I would probably be questioning it myself.

It’s not like we haven’t had a long long time to get things right with regard to the transfer market and despite Arsene’s denial that he is in any sense stubborn, it’s either that, an issue with the Board, an inability to see the problems at hand or too much dithering when it comes to getting players to sign on the dotted line. I find it wholly extraordinary that we haven’t bought a single player with any top class experience this summer and now he’s left it all hanging on one game. I still maintain that he should have done so in January by the way but there you go – we have some fantastic young players on our books but, as Lee Dixon tweeted on Saturday, it’s too much on young shoulders.

Lord knows what going out would do for the players’ confidence and belief too. It seems to fair to assume that we will be playing with a number of youngsters tonight and they won’t be immune to what is being said, the feelings of some of the supporters and the general air of crisis that is lurking over the Club like a big black cloud at the moment. Then we have to go to Old Trafford on Sunday……

If we go through this evening, well, great news obviously, but where might that leave us? With a week or so to conclude deals for players when we never seem able to do so very quickly and, most predictably, with Arsene telling us that he doesn’t really need to buy anyone as we have enough to cope already.

In some ways this is the saddest part of this whole scenario – it all seems so predictable. Losing the Carling Cup following a defensive howler and an inability to turn possession and chances in to goals, drawing Barca in the Champions League, Cesc’s departure to Spain, injuries to key players, a lack of discipline, sendings off, suspensions, transfer targets choosing to go elsewhere, Arsene not prepared to pay the going rate……..I’d like to say that you couldn’t make it up but I think we probably all could have done although Nasri’s departure just feels like salt being rub into already open wounds.

I desperately want it to work with Arsene still at the helm, I really do. I want us to go to Old Trafford on Sunday with Cahill next to TV5, Bastian Schweinsteiger in the middle of the park, Eden Hazard on the wing and Kaka on the bench as he’s “a little short”. It’s irreverent of course but in some ways I don’t mind who we buy as long as they strengthen the squad and meet that world class criteria.

We’ve been linked, and continue to find ourselves linked, with so many excellent players that everyone will have their favourites and most of them could probably do a good job for us and take the pressure off the squad while ensuring that we are competitive. We also need someone to get us, and everyone concerned with the Club, including the media, excited again.

‘Arsene knows’ we say. He certainly used to and I will be as happy as Larry (can we sign him I wonder?) if he shows us that he continues to ‘know’, happy as a Redknapp in Spurs if you get my drift.

It starts, and maybe ends, tonight against Udinese.

I shouldn't be here as i'm a United fan but I was looking through Eden Hazard news and Arsenal have popped up, alot, Personally I'd be gutted if he goes to Arsenal (as i'd like him here in Manchester) but if you lot manage to sign him, he'd be outstanding for you, and would be stupid not to.

Well we won :) Thought the lads stood up well tonight given all the crap that's going on. Great save from Chesney and the reason why Theo should play down the middle was evident. A turning point ? Who knows but at least we have something to smile about before the impending doom of Sunday !

Well cheer up - we won! And we got rid of two surly miserable little bar stewards who did not want to play for us and were a black cloud in the dressing room. Now we have players who want to be there, Jack, Ramsey, Frimpong, Theo, led by the new Captain RVP. Little Mozart is playing better than at any time and Arseshavin might decide to play (sorry, got carried away on the last one!). It will get better even if we do not get a point at OT. And you never know a couple of signings may appear. Come on Gooners, time to get behind Wenger and concentrate on getting rid of the Yank and the South African 'No Bollocks'.

Why is it Aw's fault? Surely you have to look at the board reducing the debt? Since we moved our hands have been tied and we have been living off scraps! Our all new American owner has yet to show us the money yet we blame the manager who more than likely has his transfer funds cut by the board above. No more rants come on you gunners

Thanks for all the comments folks and thanks to the team for publishing it, something I'd like to do more often given the chance. Hopefully not all doom and gloom (didn't AW say that recently?) although I am getting quite nervous now. Fingers crossed for tonight regardless......

How about this idea? Have seen that new QPR owner has reduced ticket prices and refunded money on season tickets. Bearing in mind AFC likely to receive c. £80 million in transfer fees this summer - if the vast majority of that money is not spent, how about a rebate? We would have no right to grumble with a season ticket only costing £250 per annum.

As a United season ticket holder from, well, Manchester actually - you will probably tell me to **** off , but I wish the Gunners the best of luck tonight , yes, I want your hides on Sunday at OT, but Wenger and Arsenal are just attracting far too much flack at the moment, you need a break, hope you get it in Frulli Venezia Giulli tonight.

  9. Lies, Damned Lies & Statisitics

    Aug 24, 2011, 15:30 #11778

Let me get this straight. If we win tonight we will not add to the squad because it will be deemed strong enough. If we lose tonight we will not add to the squad because we need to fill the missing CL revenue. Someone at the club must surely fall onto their sword due to the PR disaster that this close season has turned into. Please do not patronise me with the mantra of Gervinho is a direct replacement for Nasri, OXO is a replacement for CESC and Jenkinson is a replacement for Clichy. Supporting Arsenal has become akin to paying your rail fares. Prices go up and the offering gets slowly worse. We are rapidly running out of equity, once RVP and Jack leave this time next year, we will be the new Fulham. "Big clubs don't sell their best players" - AW, "This is going to be a busy summer"- IG, "Acquisitions are on their way?" - IG and "This squad is big enough for the challenge of this season" - AW. It wasn't last year Arsene and you've just lost your two best players. We are no longer competitive at the main table and are not even seen as an attractive proposition for mediocre players like Jags, Cahill and Samba. Prepare yourselves for the winter of our discontent. If you sit near the directors box at The Emirates, please be vocal and throw a well directed egg. Just joking on the last bit, they have enough egg on their very wealthy faces!

Dont know what the problem is with everyone, with all the youngsters coming though and the signing that have been made, i dont see why we shouldnt win the premier league and at least get to the final of the champions league. "Oh sorry i just tried Arsene's rose tinted glasses on".

wise up we are simply not good enough this year with this squad to come out ahead of spurs or liverpool and so we will not hit 4th spot. man u will be at least 20 points better off than us (again) and they will beat us this weekend by at least 2 clear goals. you saw them against spurs - fergy has a new team yet again because he always thinks ahead to the next season before he gets there. he makes wenger look like a novice. spurs 1st 11 is way stronger than our 1st 11 now. same for liverpool. it is an utter shambles how arsenal has been run on the playing side and the marketing side which would provide extra cash and a chance of buying better players. man u did a deal with DHL the other day for £40M for their training kit ! man u employ 40 people globally in their marketing department. other teams are so far ahead of arsenal in every respect and not just on the field. Last point - i think Arsenal are guilty for fraudulent presentation when they sucked in the 4 year upfront money for emirates seats they specfically repeated throughout the advertising and documents that moving to the Emirates would mean Arsenal competing with the best. This was clearly a lie ! theres no intention to compete with the best and we were all sold a whopping great lie.

Im just of the view that the s--t has hit the fan in that boardroom and the boss (who has for so long had a completely and fundametally conflicting relationship with the Board) is now learning that that hes either a boss or Boardroom lap dog and he cant be both. Be a boss Wenger or sadly you do need to go. Man Up! Youre taking flak that them above you should be taking and while youre happy to do so, that rabble in the Diamond Club will sit and snigger at you.

Just heard Wenger's pre-match interview in Udine. Apparantly our "solidarity" and repeatedly mentioned "mental strength" is what he believes will see us through tonight. He actually made me laugh out loud in a public place.

Excellent piece by Garth and like Eispy i have been a fan for at least 40yrs and i must say that this man AW has been given enough chances&he has failed with his master plan! I feel ashamed that the club are a laughing stock and annoyed when you see Ferguson acting so early to sign new players. Wenger is past it and should go or be sacked as he would be no great loss. That they are in danger from a second rate Italian team is laughable.

  15. HowardL

    Aug 24, 2011, 12:52 #11764

I would go further - this could be the most important game in the club's history. What about WHL '71 or Anfield '89 or Paris 2006, you might ask? Well, if you fail to win the League or Cup "there's always next season". But the implications of a defeat tonight are so doomsday-like as clearly presented by Gareth that I'm not sure I can even bear thinking about them. This is a must, must must win tie for Arsenal Football Club.

    Aug 24, 2011, 12:18 #11751

Brian Clough was the demi god for Nottingham forrest in the end he took them down with him. Arsene is much lauded in the same way and whilst i dont believe we will go down as far as forrest i feel there is a real danger that this man is leading us into the wilderness. The board and a sizeable majority of the fans continue to place there faith in a manager without the ability to change his ways at a time when he really has to not needs to. If we dont make any signings i would be very disappointed to see any backing for him from our fans. A lack of reinforcements when they are needed is an act of self destruction and worse is treason against this beautiful club of ours. I really cannot believe we are now in a position where we fear a second rate Italian outfit who incidently have lost there best players recently as well.

Wenger is a gambler and recenlty his gambles haven't paid off. He hit the jackpot in his first few years with players like Henry, Vieira, Pires picking them up cheaply and winning big domestic trophies with them. Since 2004-2005ish, his gambles haven't paid off. Truth be told, he pushes his luck as he did by not buying in January 2008 and allowing players like Gilberto, Hleb and Flamini to leave the following summer, by not strengthening and hoping to get by in third or fourth place each year. He has gambled this summer by not getting anyone experienced in until after the result of this game because he assumed that we would draw some two-bob team and sail through. At some stage it becomes clear that the gambles don't pay off and that could be tonight.

Tell you what, if you've got an extra hundred million quid for Arsene to spend, hand it over and let him get to work. If not, why not acknowledge that the real problem is that we don't have enough cash to sign top class players, and that we're still dependent on Wenger finding bargains if we're going to challenge the big spenders?

To Arselicked, do you really think that finishing in the top four is enough of a goal. This is the attitude that either the manger or the board has and why the club is in the mess its in. We will be in a cycle of finish 4th, lose your best players from that season as we are no longer a big club - Wengers words, get knocked out of c/l in qualifying game therefor no big players - or potentially big players will want to sign. We have to actually challenge for things, and that does not mean just the Carling cup. Players are ambitious and want to win trophies !With this squad even 4th may be overly ambitious.

    Aug 24, 2011, 10:37 #11746

Arselicked, You are partially right but I should remind you that Vieira was already at AC Milan, Henry a World Cup winner, Pires a European Championship winner, Nasri a full french international before they came to Arsenal. Hardly 'unknowns'. I'll give you Freddie but Wenger himself admitted that he only saw Ljunberg for the first time in an international against England, and decided to take a chance. Perhaps that's a good reason to do away with our alleged habit of watching players 30 times before coming to a decision and go more off the cuff!!

    Aug 24, 2011, 10:28 #11745

Agree with much you've said, just hoping the squad start developing a "bunker mentality". Managers like Mourinho and to a lesser extent Fergie, are skilled at using team/club criticism to galvanise and forge a great team spirit. My concern is the lack of experienced players who have been through adversity and come back as winners. These players can make all the difference to the younger players, an example of what can be achieved against the odds. But who is there in the Arsenal squad that has won anything? RVP has a Carling cup and FA cup winners medal, but that's it and it was 6 years ago. The difference between winning and losing that Carling cup final is far more damaging and far reaching than anyone could ever imagine.

  22. Gunner or Goner?

    Aug 24, 2011, 10:26 #11744

I don't understand what Wenger has been waiting for? Had he moved for a Cahil/Samba/Jag/Hazard/Mata/or who ever earlier in the summer - would that have changed Nasri's decision? Or even Fabregas'? The strange bit is that he needed to add quality last year to show both Fab and Nasri that Arsenal meant business - rather than this summer - which is about to end and still he maintains that quality is within the ranks...meaning Mata and Cahil don't fit into our first team? I still believe Wenger will buy but then like always he might not!

    Aug 24, 2011, 10:05 #11739

To "Arselicked" When AW first started bringing players through we already had a stong base. our defence and goal keeper were top class! we also already had the iceman (who in my opinion was one of the main reasons we were so good at the time)and he was brought before AW came! the worrying thing is that in the past years top players have left but there was always a top class player to replace them! now we are looking at a team full of average players that will never step up! all you have to do is go on youtube and see the way the Invincibles played and the way we play now! the football has gone badly down hill! what are we paying out high priced tickets for? Wenger has got to go!!! and the board have to get into the real world!!

We have 90 million pounds, use it. If the 90 mill is used, we could see, cahill/jaigelka 16mill, meretesacker (direct bendtner swap), hazard 24 mill, zarate 13 or however many mill he is these days and either sneijder/schweinstiger (35 mill) or kaka (28 mill). Maybe vertoghen if mertesacker isn't suitable. Quite a team isn't it. Happens or not is another issue in itself

Nice article but weren't we this hopeful all summer? I am convinced that if nothing has happened till now, it won't happen in the next 7 days. We will play out the season with the current squad (without any further additions of whatsoever so-called 'quality'). 'It's a long way down' for us till May 2012.

Arsenal FC is sinking rapidly - under the callous grip of greedy beasts - Arsene Wenger and a rabid Board. Having cleared out the club's best players (without replacements) these master auctioneers (Wenger and his Board) can as well sell the Emirates stadium now. To hell with these wolves that have eaten-up Arsenal FC. And RIP the once great Arsenal FC.

Well i have been a Gooner since ´71 and I have this very bad feeling. My goal for the season must be to avoid relegation!!!!!! Wenger should be sacked but unfortunately it would only work if he´s sacked in the summer not now. But he has lost the grib totally when he says that we allready have 4 CB´s. No we don´t! For a club like AFC standards we have one in TV and maybee a half in both Djourou and Koc., which makes it two added. This is going to be a disaster, and speaking the game on OT next weekend. Humiliation..... they will surely tear us apart.

But the problem is WE DONT HAVE TIME for Arsene to work his magic on some unknown. We need a couple of top class players and we need them NOW. I've been a supporter for over 40 years and I don't remember EVER feeling so down about the team/club as I do now.

it's good that the uncommitted players have gone now. Perhaps we can move on to the season with less negativity. Esp with a few great signings like you said there! nice post.

  31. Arselicked

    Aug 24, 2011, 8:16 #11715

No it doesn't. AFC will always be there and AW still has it. Lose or win we will still be there and we will regroup and move on. Since when has top players chosen AFC over others? or rather, since when have we signed a top class player? We have always found unknowns, made them big and sold them for good moneys. Veira, Anelka, Cesc, Henry, Ljunberg, Pires, Nasri, etc. None of these players were big before they came. All of them left and we remained in the top 4

It is true the club may be waiting to see if we qualify for the CL but at the same time we are asking why? All transfer dealings should have been sorted earlier in the summer and we may not have been in this postion. Yes we are continuously linked with players but that is as far as it goes. Unfortunately for us we never seem get them. Lose tomorrow and Sunday and i fail to see how he can remain in charge. Enough is enough.

Well put. Tonight will be interesting. We have our best forwards and defenders available, so theoritically we should only need to score once to win the game. Time will tell.
