Forgotten How To Manage

Forgotten How To Manage

Played 7, Lost 4

My last blog was a fortnight ago, when I was incandescent with rage after watching our capitulation against Blackburn. My advice at the time was for Pat “Sun Lounger” to be pensioned off, for a defensive coach to be brought in, and for Mr Gazidis to have a strong word with Weng while they sat together watching the midweek game in the Bling Layer. Since the Blackburn defeat, we beat the Bolton whipping-boys only after having to endure a wretched first half. Then, last Wednesday, we somehow managed to cling on to three points against a very average Greek team.

Before yesterday’s game, Weng received the dreaded vote of confidence from the Yank with the dodgy ‘tache. and then Weng himself went on the offensive, wanting to make Arsenal the best team in the world and coming out again with the “fourteen seasons in the Champion League” mantra. Strong words, but we needed to wait to see what would happen on the pitch.

At the start of the Totterington game, I was ever hopeful that we could do the business against ‘Arry’s team of misfits. I thought that we could easily overrun their midfield due to ‘Arry’s strange tactics. So what happened to our so-called big players yesterday, then? Arteta was completely anonymous; so was Benny Hill when he came on. Coquelin looked like Deckchair Denilson in disguise, Gervinho is turning into another Hleb and, finally, Walcott was a total waste of space. When I saw The Ox last Wednesday, I immediately thought of Walcott but with skill. Yesterday, The Ox wasn’t even on the bench. And to crown it all, for the next few weeks it looks like we are going to have to put up with the hapless Jenkinson who looks totally out of his depth.

We now sit amongst the nether regions of the Premier League with seven points from seven games. Add that lot to last season’s nightmare, and we are obviously in more than a spot of bother. If it wasn’t for our keeper for keeping us in it yesterday, for Song for showing us how crossing the ball should be done, and for Percy - since whenever he is on the pitch there is always hope - we would have been buried long before they banged in the winner. Can anybody in their right mind actually see Percy signing on the dotted line at the end of this woeful season?

I repeat my same message to Weng and Sun Lounger from two weeks ago. What do you get up to on the training ground? Where is the management? Where is the coaching? Please sort it out.

Worst of all, yesterday we were beaten by Totterington. Now, that really hurts. I now have to cope with having to put on a brave face to all the baying Neanderthals who will hunt me down in their hordes. In all my 49½ years of being a Gooner, losing to that bunch of useless twats totally depresses me and makes me irritable for ages. I care about The Arsenal and it makes my blood boil to watch half my team ponce about all afternoon being watched by two people who have forgotten how to manage.

Its a fact that as you get older you find it harder to adapt to change and most tend to hate change and new ways of doing things when the old ways have served us well in the past, there are exceptions to this rule sir red face at manure for one i fear mr wenger is in the camp of those who abhore change and new ideas and will NOT do things any differently however often and painfully he is shown to be wrong for not doing so

mike somen ( post 15311 ) i am a fan and a shareholder, so why do you think shareholders are happy wenger does not spend the money we have available. I bought my shares not to make money, but because i am a fan. Theres nothing more than i want than to see Arsenal win trophies, and to me that is all that i care about and not profit.

Please provide a glossary so we can understand the stupid nicknames. Coquelin was easily our best player and he can play right back, so may be a better option there than Jenkinson. Gervinho is the new Chamakh.

I see where Carlo Ancelotti is available&he is a man that could sort out this sorry mess. Also he is calm&sporting manager who would not refuse to shake opposing managers hands¬ go in to a huff like AW.Although would he be restricted by the wonderful board?

I think you are being harsh on Pat Rice! the issue is with Wenger. Lack of investment in the team is the main issue and only one person to blame for that. As everyone says... In Arsene we rust...

Well... Look, footy the game we love (and at times hate)is what it is. Just let's suppose for a brief second that we, the Arsenal, always won one trophy every year. If only! That scenario happens in countries like Spain, Scotland, Holland, Japan, (you get my drift). Yes it hurts right now, yes we look a poor side, yes, maybe the manager has been in post a little too long. But it is better than most Think about clubs like LPool (no title in 22 seasons), Spudz (nuff said), Aston Villa, Newcastle, even Chelski for crying out loud. The Scummy Mancs only won 1 trophy last term, albeit the title. We have to stay strong and look at the big picture. We will not get relegated, we most probably won't finish fourth (but we put together a run like say everton do post December and who knows). It had to come to an end sometime, nowt lasts for ever. But rest assured, when we come back, we wil be GREAT. We may even win back2back titles unbeaten! That's how good a coach Wenger is. Or have we all forgotten? Or are you now telling me that it was player power that achieved all that? Come on! Have a moan, yes, have a go at people, yes, but stick with Arsenal You all know it makes perfect sense. I hear it time and time and time again, "...You play the best footy, you are a joy to watch...". And you know what, we are. ARSENAL FOR EVER!!!

A pointer to just how bad we have become is this 1 Manninger 2 Luhzny 3 Vivas 4 Malz 5 Stepanov 6 Cygan 7 Van bronkhorst 8 Larsson 9 Wiltord 10 Kanu 11 Wreh These were all shown the door for being not quite up to the mark or just plain crap,I tell you now the above team would murder us right now. Please Arsene in the name of God just go!!.I have stated before that we are a cyclonic club and that our fortunes will always ebb and flow but for the first time in 42 years i am actually embarrased by what im watching.I beg you once more Arsene for the sake of all that i hold dear take the revolver and step outside the tent.Ancelotti with Keown and DB10 would be my dream team replacement

A slight correction on my earlier entry. There has been a manager who went one season longer than Wenger has gone (so far) without a trophy, George Morrell (1908-15). Along with Wenger, Morrell was also the only other manager who oversaw the club moving to a new stadium. He also holds the dubious honour of being the only manager to take us down a division. You know what they say about history repeating itself…

Why are we allowed to be rude about OGL, but not Pat Rice? How long does he have to be part of the set up before it is appropriate to challenge his part in the set up? The guy is happy to take the cash, and had the chance to walk away last Summer and didn't. He like Wenger probably wants the best for the club, but both are way past their sell by date. They have been in this together for a long time. BTW, I am a Gooner since the 70s as well, although length of service should have nothing to do with whether your opinion is valid, or whether you should be allowed to stay in the job. Fozzy - you call him Sun Lounger all you like. It is more respectful than most of the disrespectful names used at our current players - of whom, as the bloke behind me says "it's not their fault that they are s@@@ - it is Wenger's fault for picking them"

We are now paying for the fact that a hapless Board has refused to accept that Arsene Wenger has reached his sell by date. His contribution to the Club has been incredible but his stubborness and inflexibility have brought us down to what is now a mdiocre mid-table team.Once other teams learned how to play us, there was a total refusal to change tactics and a pathetic insistence on sticking to youngsters without giving them the stiffening of experienced players. The ageing Manager's attitude to spending money is fine for the shareholders, they love it but for the club and the fans a disaster. The star players will not be tempted to join us, our stars will be tempted away and I believe it will take at least three seasons for us to come up again. Let him go covered in glory and let's get in someone who can get us back starting with a sound defence and efective and motivated players.

I think the fact sunday was one of our better performances this season says it all really, they told us we had to move from our home so we could compete then tell us 5 yrs later we cant compete! Interesting to hear wenger reckon we have taken 2 steps forward and 1 back and then expect people to take seriously, he was a top manager buy he has been caught up and overtaken, if anyone still believes he can turn it round I would like to hear why especially when hes failed miserably year after year for the last 5_6 seasons to do so!

Well I think it's obvious. The glory days are well and truly over, until we get a complete overhaul of the board AND manager. I went to see us take on Shrewsbury, I don't care if this is a League 2 side we played, at points the Shrews looked better. Wenger is simply getting the tactics wrong, he is in the wrong mindset that we can walk the ball into the goal with no real effort involved, this cannot happen. I despair, the board need to be thrown out. In Arsene we rust, and with the way things are with the rotten, rancid board... Say hello to welcoming such clubs as Doncaster Rovers and Derby County to the Emirates when we're a Championship side next season, enough said.

I have been a supporter of AFC for many a year. I have seen the bad times as well as the good times. No matter what happens to our club, i will always be a supporter. What annoys me most about some of the people here is as soon as someone speaks their mind, they are told they are not a true gooner and should support some dross elsewhere. I dont dare critisise the team as i will be told to go elsewhere to. All i know is, when Arsenal next play, i will be supporting them in full.

Brian Clough had to leave Forest and Rafa Benitez had to leave Liverpool. Both managers won the European Cup/ Champions League. Clough winning it twice. However there came a time when both had to leave. Unfortunately with Wenger it is two years too late. Was anyone at the Wigan game two years ago at The JJB? Remember, we were two up with fifteen minutes to go and ended up losing the game which ended any hope of us winning the league. This was a whole year before the Newcastle 4-4 and the Birmingham city Carling cup Embarrassment. The bottom line is Wenger has made far too many mistakes in the transfer market and with his tactics. This summer was the last straw, when he insulted us by not buying a centre half with premiership experience. I would say bring in a new manager now so that he can bring in some players in January. I just don't trust Wenger's judgement anymore. I would like to see Ancelotti as the boss with David O'leary as his number two, and Steve Bould as coach. With respect to Pat Rice, keep him involved until the end of the season then retire him with honour and grace.

All of this 'stop going to matches' or 'stop buying the merchandise' nonsense would change nothing. A healthy chorus of 'we want Wenger out' at a match would be much more powerful. Drown out all the AKB clowns who chant his name. Enough is enough.

with every place you finish in the league worth £800,00 more than the place below you just how much do you think we will lose at the end of this season, for the past few seasons we have finished 3rd or 4th, on current form my guess is we may finish anywhere between 8th and 10th so say 5 places below normal, thats a £4 million loss on last years prize money which is perhaps how much extra it would have cost for someone like cahill. I will be at the shareholders meeting on the 27th october, im sure the club will not answer any of the questions sent in that critisizes the board or management, perhaps its worth me being thrown out by telling them what i realy think. Im sure the club will go on about the debt now being only £97 million but without champions league football next season i cant see a large amount of that sum being paid off unless they put ticket prices up or sell our best players, oh i forgot we have already done that !

ok it can't be helped that ref & linesman both failed to take any action after the handball for the first goal also it can't be helped that chesney waits until yesterday before being at fault for a goal conceded this season for the first time but as for the rest, why after we score was their then no real threat posed for the rest of the game i dont remember many top class saves being made to repel arsenal attack after attack. And also can anyone explain what the hell is the point of playing that jolly green giant of a defender up front at the end of the game if we decide not to use his height advantage by hitting the ball up to him only to continue to try and pass the ball through on the ground, yet more insanity from arsenal. As for arshavin he never looks like he can be bloody bothered even when he strolls on to make a guest appearance from the bench ,we need rid of that clown as soon as the window opens he is a disease that is infecting our team.On the bright side at least Coquelin played with a true maturity and looked full of spirit .Thank christ for the international break again.

sorry foz but can't accept any criticism of Pat Rice, neither the kid from Charlton who only cost 1 mil, he will have his day in our future, but his nightmare in our present is down to ogl. Too much mediocrity in the side, cannot blame rvp for getting bored with ogl's rhetoric and having it away, i wouldn't play with that bunch of loosers any longer than i had to. Said it before all roads lead to the manager, he is clever enough to manipulate the board whatever way he wants, as most other managers would be whatever their view on spending or club economics. lets get back to being a football club and focusing on acheiving 1st team success, everything else is unimportnant to anyone who does not own shares.

You Boys don't get it. Didn't you hear the Great Mans words before the Spuds game? 'this team has mental strength'. I could not believe he came out with this tired mantra. I laughed so much when I read it that my friends and family were thinking of calling Nurse Rached! Actually, watching the garbage served up by our new last minute signings made a lobotomy almost appealing! 'AA' is spot on and the Septic will do nothing until his investment and more importantly his Retturns start to suffer. Not long now then.

Ramsey was completely useless and I don't care what anyone says, but he has been all season. Coquelin played well and with regards to Gervinho, he is one of the worst players I've seen on our team. Can't get round his man, no creativity. Its sad with regards to Ramsey though, as before his injury he looked ten times better. Now is looks like all his creativity has gone.

Jumperforgoalposts your spot on! For me as a gooner of 40yrs its now embarrasing what is happening at Arsenal. I agree about the boards agenda but ultimately its Wengers fault were we find ourselves now.Its been coming for the last few years. This man(AW)is completely and utterly naieve on tactics and he has been a very lucky man in the last years. I dont for 1 minute agree that he was ever a brilliant manager as he inherited a strong backbone of a team and he unearthed some good players but it cant go on forever and a youth policy needs to be mixed with mature experienced players. Bring in Ancelotti to sort out the mess.

can someone please explain to me the reason for leaving highbury, i,can vividly remember watching dvd,s of ogl telling us it would enable us 2 compete with chelski, and man u in accquiring the best players it,s all been one big con.yesterday we were beaten by a very average spurs performance, how can that guy slag off coqcuellin he was by far our best player. i,ve had plenty of arguements over past couple of season,s with all the akb,s since we blew the title at birmingham in 2008 we,ve slowly declinen 2 the current state of play, all the real arsenal people have left the club ken friar, david dein d,fizman r.ip .finally how bad was walcott once again yesterday

gee with his analysis is spot on.The defence has been allowed to deteriorate . In fact if you cast your minds back to the 2005 or even 2004 season, the gunners conceded many goals too. The only difference was they were winning. I am afarid Wenger is deluded if he thinks attacking is the way to go.It is provided you have a strong and near leak proof one. Spurs winner is the type of goal the gunners have conceded the last seven years. I remeber Poyet scored one at the death and a few others. How can the gunners continue to concede thistype of goal? It's obvious the gunners don't practice defence drills. This is due to Wenger. The FM is living on past glory. If he wants to leave, let him go. He will find another team won't be prepared to wait for his philosophy to work and he could be fired if he starts on a winless streak. Yes Arsenal and fans will eternally grateful to him but there comes a time when the parting of ways is beneficial to both parites.

Fozzy please stop refefring to Pat Rice as "sun lounger" as it is very disrespectful to someone who has been a loyal servant to the club man and boy, a former captain, who played in 5 F A Cup finals for the club as well as being a member of our first double team. AS for not going to matches how the hell is that going to help the team ? We are struggling , they need our support despite the mistakes Wenger has made. I liked to think we had loyal fans unlike those at Chelsea but you do seem to be a fairweather bunch cut from the same cloth. As for going to watch Barnet or as one muppet said on a forum Brentford the ffs stop whining and p*ss off there. The real fans will stand by the club through thick and thin. We've had a lot of the thick now we have to endure some of the thin so lets get behind the team and stop whining. Results if as bad as you lot reckon will sort out Wengers fate soon enough.

Cant diagree with any of this , we have lacked character in the side since the Eduardo leg break ,broke our season . There is mediocirty everywhere in the squad . The only world class player we have is RVP ( and maybe Wilshere ) we have a good keeper but everyone apart from AW knows that the number two Fabianski is second rate .He could have bought Given for 4m, Scott Parker should have been at the Emirates two years ago.Mata could have been bought with the Fabregas money in May , Nasri was always going to leave . Benayoun ? ask yourselves why he was available . The defence is terrible where is Cahill - he was available back in January when we all (except AW ) knew that the defence was suspect in Vermalaens absence .The tactics of AW are crazy ,why play an open game at Old Trafford , everyone feared the pasting we received .Play with five at the back , pack the midfield and try to get them on the break -just like teasm used to do with us ( but dont any more ) Playing an open game reminded me of McLaren coming to Highbury with a rubbish team and trying to play a high defensive line with TH at his speediest and DB at his peak ! Nonsense . Wenger out - he s finished . Thank you and goodbye

Scezney 8/10, Sagna 7/10 Gibbs 5/10 Mertersacker 5/10 Song 5/10 Cocquelin 6/10 Ramsey 3/10 Arteta 4/10 Walcott 0/10 RVP 5/10 Gervinho 5/10. Just my views guys. Walcott would have scored a 1/10 had he have stayed at home. That he turned up meant we played with 10 men still but he got in the way at times. A straight 10 men from the off would have been more helpful. Scez gets his 8 despite the 2nd goal due to him preventing 3 Spurs 'goals'before his error albeit accpeting that had they have quality forwards he wouldnt have stood a chance.

Absolutely spot on. How long do we have to watch Wenger struggle, he will never get the club back to where it belongs. We all have known that there will come a day when Wenger leaves the club, make it now I say !!!1 Because he has not got a clue, hasn't had a clue for past 5 years so why is he now going to figure it out. To all the AKB's....you have to get on board with those of us who say the time for change is NOW. Bottom 6 and heading for relegation...now that's a clue !!!!

No wonder spuds fans want us keep Wenger, he’s totally lost the plot and living on his laurels. Thanks for the memories but it’s time to change and that doesn’t necessarily mean him leaving. He needs to change his attitude quickly to buying top and I mean top class and proven players and stop being Del Boy Trotter in the transfer market, and change needs to include the board’s financial model because it’s killing what the club does best at playing decent football. Yesterday our passing was atrocious, our defence a shambles and our players looked like they couldn’t be bothered. Time for change, enough is enough, and we have to make it uncomfortable for the board now.

  37. Fozzy's mate

    Oct 03, 2011, 14:13 #13722

The problem ia that Wenger has lost his primary quality, which was that plyaers wanted to play for him, so he could keep stars happy and loyal to him. As everyone knows theway to keep top players is to bring quality in around them. Starting with Vieira he has let player after player go and not adequately replaced them.To sum degree it suited him as it allowed him to keep his get out of jail free card "i dont spend" in his back pocket. However the non-replacement of Cesc and Nasri has compounded the downward spiral which started with the Carling Cup debacle. You cannot continually sell top class and replace them with nobody, journeyman and kids. Now nobody has any loyalty to OGL. My dad used to say if Wenger goes so will all the top players, but any top players we had have gone and all that is left are kids, journeymen and top quality but crocked (RVP, TV etc). with Jack, possibly TV and now Sagna out for the majority of the season, Wenger really has left us facing a season in lower mid table or worse. Can anyone really see us winning more than 2 or 3 away games this season and maybe 7 or 8 home games? I hate to agree with Glenda but feel we are facing some more real hammerings this year, especially at Chelsea in a few weeks time. Even if we somehow grind past Sunderland and Stoke at home the best case scenario (will anyone argue with me) is 13 points from 10 games, which is relegation stuff. As usual the christmas eve rush saw cheap bargains despite our coffers being full. We now know Kronke is in love with OGL, but howlow can we go - Mandy Dodd over to you?

I agree Fozzy's judgement of Coquelin was way off the mark, as was his decision to totally ignore the ineptitude of Ramsey on the day, but that's what you get with talented young players. Promising one day, out of their depth the next. However, everything else Fozzy had to say was on the money. I think. I didnt have my English/Fozzspeak dictionary handy!

Thought Coquelin had a decent game, unfortunately didn't get much help in midfield. Can't beleive the Ox weren't even on the bench. Shows the state of our current squad that I wish Eboue was going to replace the unlucky Bac.

Hey, don't go down on everyone. Coquelin looked great for his lack of experience. Spurs, like it or not, are a good team, and were deserving favorites for the win. Getting down on Gervinho after one miss is just pathetic, like a whining 6-year old. Personally, I'd like Unai Emery or Carlo Ancelotti to have a stab at running the show, but don't condemn everyone because your team isn't winning. Its about more than that.

mark my word, we have not seen the worst yet. we have pampared this wenger guy so much so that he cares for nothing and has an escuse for every mistake ,which are a lot. it is a joke really for a big team like arsenal to be managed like a championship club. if it money they want to save or is it profit they want to make, they should wait when we finish bottom half of the league and see how much savings they will make.Talk about false economy and ineptitude

Very harsh on Coquelin, the boy was thrown in at the deep end and performed with much promise. We all feel frustrated but slagging off the young players will help no one. Its the management that are to blame.

Coquelin played well imo compared to the rest of our midfield which lost the ball constantly even when not under pressure. The team isn't good enough bottom line buying all those players late in the transfer window & thinking it would all gel together was mismanagement of the highest order. To all of us that havn't worked even half a day in football the only analogy i can think of it's like doing your shopping on xmas eve generally you make mistakes that you will be reminded of for the rest of the year!

Coquelin and Sir Chesney were the only two players who came out of the game with any credit in my opinion. Maybe Gibbs who worked his socks off trying to get up to support Gervinho who never gave him the ball and never attempted to get back and help him at the back. And please stop calling Pat Rice "Sun Lounger" - childish in the extreme when he's devoted as much of his life to Arsenal as he has. It's hardly his fault that his boss has lost the plot completely and there's no doubting his passion.

Being a lifelong Arsenal fan who has read the Gooner for the best part of its existence I am finally going to say my piece. We are now officially worse than the Spuds. That is it, that is all I want to say. If that is not enough reason for the Board to do something then we might as well pack it in and go and support Barnet. The life of our club is slowly be squeezed away and we should all sit here today and cry. Please, please, please Arsenal do something about it before it is too late.

This is what supporting a team is all about. However, the issue here was that almost all of this was avoidable with a few sensible, high quality signings which just didn't happen.

Whow, that old and writing such an infantile article. Grow up and take it like a man; we're going to have a crap season, yes horrible, yes critisize but please do it in a grown up way.

What match did you watch Coquelin in? Coquelin was perhaps our best player. He was composed and strong. He won the ball back quite a few times which is fortunate becase Ramsey and Arteta kept giving it away. As for Walcott - hasn't he had enough chances. Time to bring on the Ox!!!

In our last 20 league games we have Won 6, Drawn 7 and Lost 7. 4 defeats have occurred this season alone. We have not won two league games in a row since February when we beat Wolves then Stoke 4 days before the CC Final. We have not won 3 league games in a row since January 2011. The last time we won more than 3 League games in a row was March 2010. The time before that was October 2009! We have conceded 42 goals in our last 30 league games. This is not a blip. We haven't been consistent in 3 seasons. So all the talk of "We just need a run of results" is delusional. It won't happen.

You care about Arsenal and yet label a young player that will need help and support "hapless" after watching him for 2 or 3 games. If you support the club then do that we all know Wenger should have gone in the summer but it snot the players fault try supporting them instead of waiting for the mistake and you know what they may just improve.

Same boat mate...the lousiest feeling waking up this morning with a sore in the heart..took me a few seconds to remember the previous day's crumbling at the Spuds. Where to now Arsene..?!?!

Fozzy - you care, I care and thousands of Gooners care (apart from the deluded idiots who continue to support Wenger) but it appears our useless Board don't give a stuff. I am more angry with them than I am with Wenger, which says a lot, but my anger is gradually turning to indiffernce. My view is that for the last few years we made the top four IN SPITE of Wenger not because of him. Top four was the bare minimum with the talent we had going forward and if Mr Magoo had even tried to sort the defence out a trophy would have surely followed. Now the team has fallen apart because of chronic lack of investment and mis-management. Wenger and the Board should hang their heads in shame for what they have done, and this season will finally open their eyes to the disaster area we currently are.

Fozzy - I think a little harsh on Coquelin (he made at least two forward passes) and silent on Ramsey? Ramsey was poor - no-one else seems to have noticed that he had a high pass completion rate - to Spuds. Frimpong was the same a couple of weeks ago. One happy thought though - even with Bacary out for the rest of the season, I don't think we'll be suffering too much of Jenkinson - unless the boy mans up quickly, he is so far out of his depth that he is likely to be red carded every couple of games he plays. Where is Eboue when we need him? Sadly - I think you are right about RVP.
