Putting the season so far into perspective

Random thoughts from the Barnet Hills

Sagna: Write him off for the season

Sometimes you don't get what you deserve in sport. Sunday at Spurs was such an occasion. For 60 minutes we controlled the game, yet a freak goal by Kyle Walker, reminiscent of Danny Rose's a few seasons ago, saw to it that our recent poor record against our neighbours continued. Szczesny has a lot of credit in the bank at the moment, so I won't get caught up blaming him for the goal. Even though he was at fault, I feel that over the season he will save us more points than he will lose.

The game turned with the arrival of Sandro, following which Spurs matched us in midfield and contained our passing game. Like other instances in Wenger's reign, he was beaten tactically, and perhaps switching to a five-man midfield following Sandro's entrance might have yielded a different result.

Let's put the season so far into perspective though:
- we lost at Spurs and United away; while no consolation, many teams will struggle against these two at their home ground
- although our loss at home against Liverpool was due to poor summer planning, we were missing key players
- we have a fairly clear run of games up to January to pick up points. Bar Chelsea and Man City, all games are winnable. If we do fail against so-called lesser teams, I may change my opinion
- fourth place is still obtainable. Spurs will have a bad patch and Liverpool can slip up - nothing like a good siege mentality at the club, and there seems to be no sign of player unrest. The players are behind the manager
- we must beat Spurs and Utd at home
- we’re still undefeated in the Champions League
- home at Bolton in the Carling Cup, we should get to the quarter-finals and hope for a good draw.

The injury to Sagna is a blow, and I am loath to play Jenkinson or Djourou. I would try Koscielny or Coquelin and keep Song at centre-back. Write off Sagna for the season too...

Ramsey is a talented player but concedes possession far too frequently - he needs to improve this area of his game if he is to have a long career at Arsenal. Coquelin has impressed on the other hand, and deserves his chance in the team.

RVP and contract issues will run into next summer and beyond. If he joins Man City along with all his other ex-colleagues we should re-name this site from the “online gooner" to the "online blue mooner".

Creatively, we miss Cesc, who had the highest number of assists in Europe up to last season. Our play and possession in the final third has declined rapidly.

Nice to see Denilson has become a figure of hate at Sao Palo - he will probably be back next summer as we continue to pay whatever ridiculous wages were agreed in his last contract.

Wenger for England manager? I have a vision of him taking the England Under-15s side to a major senior tournament followed by much ridicule...

Will failure to get into the Champions League be such a bad thing? It may finally force a rethink at the club.

It's international week - how many players will come back injury-free? Hopefully RVP is unscathed and The Verminator is fit soon.

Ron - don't agree with your defence of Mandy as for me she seems to not want to accept the blindingly obvious. I do agree though that none of us really know what the politics at Arsenal are right now but I blame the lot of 'em for the mess we are in regardless. Also we could be in with the top three, if we chose to, as the billionaires are already on board. I don't like what has happened to football in this regard any more than you do but if you can't beat 'em join 'em I say until UEFA say otherwise.

Despite the evidence viewed through their own eyes, many like Doddy hang on to their belief in the power of "positive thought". Meanwhile, an increasing majority having seen through the myth of Wenger, and witnessing the turmoil within the club, have now expanded to the issue of "rational thought". Thinking "rationally" is only different from "positive thinking," in that it is a realistic assessment of the situation, with a view towards rectifying the problem, if at all possible, and we the fans must really consider doing something soon...

I believe Mandy Dodd is geting some unfair stick on here at the moment. Fact is we dont know whats going down at Arsenal or what the dynamics of Wengers relationship with the Board is and hes clearly never going to step out of line and tell the media. All we know is that Arsenal look to be a shambles at present. There is one major factor though that is in my view undisputable and that is that the Premier League is heading towards a genuine closed shop at its summit. Utd, City and Chelsea will rule now for years and years unless the pending 'Fair play' regime stops their accountants and Lawyers getting round the new rules and thats unlikely. They have the cash. Cash will always sweep up the major trophies by and large. Its going like La Liga and the SPL have been for years. Putting aside the element of Arsenal taking the pee out of us fans that we all tend to agree with, the truth is that we're not a major player anymore. Still, fear not. The glory hunters are surely fading away, prices muct fall by definition (eventually) and the true supporters many of whom 'walked' several years ago, may yet get to come back.

look the facts are we need to buy big and without any fuss, not constantley bidding £4m or £6m short saying "well we did try" we need to forget who has gone thats done now, sort that defence out get keown and bould working on that and maybe listen to these two mr wenger as to WHO to buy.the players are out there to sort out our midfield aswell just spend the bloody money.4th place is still up for grabs if we can just steady the ship up til january that is when our season COULD start

Pradeep, "win our homes games against united and spurs?" that is pretty optimistic i think mate, we are not in their league at the moment, as for this idea that when key players return we will be miles better, i am not so sure, your only really talking about Tommy V and Jack W, are they really going to make alot of difference, we have a team of average players, santos,mertesacker,koscielny,walcott,arshavin,ramsey.....and forget about 4th spot, we won't make the top 7, its frightening just how quickly a club who were not quite good enough but always had a chance of competing with the top boys have become so pedestrian. Going back to the spurs game, we were probably better than i thought we'd be but lets be honest if arry the twitch had sent them out gung ho from the off, we'd have been 3 down inside 15 minutes.

Fozzys mate, i agree with you on Cesc and Nasri, I think that is why Wenger wanted to keep at least one of them whatever the cost now this looks to have been spot on. As for not spending, do any of us really know what is going on? maybe 3 possible scenarios, apologies for near plagiarism of other boards: 1/ The new owner is at worst an asset stripper, at best extremely risk averse, sees the way the economy is going and has told wenger to cut wages until revenues can be increased. so there is money for transfers but conversely, noT wages. A controlling upper management scupper potential deals wenger has requested. wengers silence, like it or not has been bought for the duration of his contract, until he writes his book. 2/ wenger wants to strengthen but cannot bring himself to spend large amounts that are not value. he knows the ability of kids coming through. The board recognise wengers strengths but also his weaknesses so try to manage him, their case is strengthened after OT, and get experience in, hence the events at the end of the window. But in reality, Wenger knows mistakes have been made, sometimes for good reasons, and he is determined to put things right, but that will take time, as it would under any manager without city / chelsea budget. 3/ Wenger has lost the plot, gone senile , is mentally ill, will refuse to adapt after recent losses of players some blame Wenger, some the board, some both. It is clear something has gone very wrong. Obviously simplistic here, would need a book to explain the ongoings at this club Option 1, if true, no point in getting rid of Wenger, who will do better under an asset stripper / owner who refuses to spend Option 2/ Dein could manage wenger and got the best out of him - worth a go if Wenger is determined to put things right? Option 3 / Unlikely, wenger has medicals and such problems would be identified. If these issues are correct, they will soon rectify themselves A lot of evidence for and against those and other scenarios, as well as any number of combinations of them, just depends on how you view it? But please do not assume i am not as concerned as you about the way things are at the moment. Just not sure there is enough evidence to blame everything on Wenger, there may be a reason the owner / board are desperate to keep him and not risk another under what have been and may still be serious restrictions

I went to Spurs but must have missed that 'control' you speak of. We were insipid. The Keeper stopped it being a heavier defeat and ironically stopped us getting what would have been a fortunate draw too. All in all, a pretty tepid and tortuous afternoon. Still, its gone now. Onwards and upwards hopefully. Cmon you Gunners.

Mandy all the ever dwindling brigade of Wengerites go on about is how well he has done with a lack of funds and how others have spent more. My argument of the last few years has been that why is it positive than when not winning trophies that he does not use the resources/funds at his disposal. It is so like you he can talk about how he has as Kronkr said last week "extracted value". Fact the clubs accounts to 31 May showed a cash reserve of 115 million and fact pre the sales of Nasri and Cesc we already had 40 million untouched in the player transfer account. It is worse not to spend and fail than to spend and fail trying. Kronke and Usmanov are hugely rich men so why do we want to give them more. That is why in a sporting sense the sales of Cesc and Nasri were not good business as we all know they would not be adequately replaced and like the crass increase in prices will only give them more cash to count. Face it TV has missed the last 1.5 seasons since being first crocked at spurs in April 2010, Wilshere out possibly for the season even Mr 3 weeks says 22 weeks! Sagna a broken leg and god knows on Diaby. Squad cover is not a concept OGL is familiar with. Face it our rivals this season are the sort of teams we face in our next 2 games not the team we face after in what I fear is our next hiding at Stamford Bridge. Face it its over for Wenger its just a matter of how drawn out and painful an end it is.

Excuse me but why suddenly all this talk about Spurs? OK Talk about Spurs if you must but ultimately, we all know their little victories against us end up as only insignificant blips in the scheme of things. They are of no consequence, and have been that way for a long time. Lets face it they have won nothing really major in most fans lifetimes. And as much as the media want you to believe, Arry is not going to change that. Lets face it he only has 2 immeidate futures, one is England, the other well there is legal stuff going on so unfair to comment. When this Arsenal team recovers and gets key players back, we will be frying much bigger fish than Spurs, I look forward to soon debating rivalries with far superior teams

Mandy, the problem with your argument is Wenger's wage bill is nearly twice Redknapp's. And still rising. This is where the 'prudence' argument falls down. Wenger chooses to spend the cash on wages for potential in the hope that it will come good. This has been clearly demonstrated as a failure this summer - look at the players that have either been let go or cannot be let go due to their high wages or are out on loan somewhere. The facts are there, why is there even a debate about this still.

Wenger's template of tippy tappy is tripe Mandy. You may like pretty(in pink) patterns but many don't. Our style is cack! I'd sooner win 1-0 anyday to losing 2-3, many times, 2-8, 3-4, losing 4-4 too! Wenger is a totally inept tactician, and only applies one dimensional tippy tappy ***t. Wait till the cup draws pairs us with a get into 'em side domestically and we'll be scalped. As for the continent, when have we won a group when we led it? We are now also rans making up the numbers in Europe, where theoretically we should prosper. It's shoddy leadership from Wenger all round. Marks out of ten please all. I give him 2. The problems at Arsenal are symptomatic of terrible decision making. Wenger out again. As for the spuds-love Arsenal more than hating them!

Kenny is spot on about the tactics against Arsenal - it is quite clear teams are LETTING us have ball, knowing that sooner or later we will loose possession in a key area and concede. How many more examples of this type of defeat against the Spuds do some fans have to see before the penny drops! As for IG, he ran up the "white flag" for the club with his statement about not finishing in the Champions League. I thought Americans always wanted to be winners, clearly the board and management are entering into a self destruction pact!

kenny, i am far from bsesses with finishing above spurs, that is in fact something i just take for granted, i just want to put a bit of perspective against some of the posts on here. say what you want about wenger but to continually state he is inferior to a man who has spent far more than him, ofter leaving teams in financial turmoil, who has never finished above wenger, ond who, three or so weeks ago had his own fans calling for his head seems a bit silly to me. if you want to knock wenger against other teams, there are far better examples to use than a manager and team who will be and have been in our shadow for a very long time. that spurs team was at virtually full strength, and kenny, it sums up our season that we now have 3 out of 4 of our best players injured. sure were all over the place until sandro was introduced and we lost bad. so have a go at wenger by all means, but damn him with far better teams than spurs, as i say they really are not very good, they know it, you know it, it is just the media and mischievous fans who have become bitter over many years that try to tell you otherwise

Mandy - we all loved Wenger once like we all loved the fact we were top dogs in London and over a sustained period jousted with Manure on an even footing for domestic supremacy. But his stubborn refusal to add the final pieces to the puzzle of his last now broken team for fear of spending a few quid and actually accepting he did not have the perfect formula has destroyed that love. Coupled with the arrogance displayed in his attitude towards his own loyal fans and refusal to add anyone to his stable of yes men for fear of success being credited to anyone but him, this has led to the pitiful team we now are. He never has factored in injuries to his squad building and his pronouncements of being surprised when the likes of Diaby, Rosicky and TV get injured again are pathetic. I like you hold Spurs in contempt but for a few years have felt they are more ambitious than us. Frankly we are a club whose accounts show a cash reserve of 115 million but spend like we have a deficit of that figure. We have sleep walked to our current malaise and wenger, ivan the terrible, hill wank and co will not accept our demise despite half a season of relegation form. Mid table at best with Spurs well ahead of us. Pathetic when you think how far ahead of them we were a few years ago.

Mandy fans like you are obsessed with finishing above the Spuds while missing everything thats going wrong at the club.Redknapp is not an idiot he has seen Arsenal enough in the last few seasons to know they could give us as much of the ball as they liked because we dont hurt teams then go up the other end and score.I am fed up with gooners who keep saying we dominated possession. So what? For all our possession how many chances did we create? When were games ever decided on possession and 5 yard square passes? Our football is so ponderous and slow. Its so predictable. We are weak in the middle of the park and dont get me started on the defence. It sums up our season that our best player has been a keeper who has let in 16 goals in 7 games.Only the Ox has stood out of the new signings.

Mandy Dodd. Go girl. Keep living in your fantasy world. The sad thing is that it was so easy, but Arsenal fans think that keeping the ball demonstrates something. It demonstrated that Arsenal had not got the faintest idea what to do with it. They created 2 chances in 90 minutes. If they kept the ball so well and dominated they must be even worse than I saw. And what I saw was the worst Arsenal team since the mid 70s. Awful, truly awful.

strange so many on here eulogising Spurs, at full strength against out battered injured team but still could not get the ball from us for long periods, needed a handball,ma couple of silly mistakes and a Gerv missed sitter to win. Looked to me like arteta and coq pissed on parker for MOST of the game, still that is not a politically correct opinion these days is it? as i say, strange, almost as if you have been reading the English media. Spurs play effective football under Harry - they dont showboat and go around in circles or pass to eachother and go nowhere. they have players who want to hurt the opposition. Van Der Vaat, Modric, Vale. Parker outshone Arteta by a mile. We were never going to win that one. We are in far more trouble than you care to admit. the club has gone downhill at an incredible rate of knots since Feb

  35. DW Thomas

    Oct 08, 2011, 19:17 #13985

To even have a minor chance at top four, we have to completely change our attitude from non-aggressive joggers to players that play with full hearts and steel. Keep the pretty passing sure, with end product, but add 90 minutes of aggressive hounding of the opposition when on defense. Yet, I don't see this happening, especially under Wenger. Mettle. That's what this team needs. But who will give it to them or bring it out of them? $7 million Wenger gets paid to do exactly that and he has failed miserably. I was patient till Spurs. Now it's time for real change. Either we hear about some serious changes to improve results (new defensive coach, serious talk of new signings in Jan., stories of Wenger going off for bad performances, etc) or I just can't see much improvement. Sure, TV, Wilshire, and yes even Diaby can help, but only if they lead by example and give 110%. No one in the team does that consistently right now. When we make mistakes or give up a bad goal, it's all hanging heads and panic. These are supposed pros who can't even be bothered to track back at times or stay focused when the ball goes out of bounds. These are things I had to address as a youth coach, not things you expect a coach at Arsenal to ever have to address. The culture at the club from top to bottom has to change. No more excuses Wenger! Be accountable. Deal with the pressure. Improve or it's time to look at new managers.

Those who are putting all there hopes on Vermaelen coming back to save us are dreaming, unfortunately i cannot ever see him playing more than a couple of games in a row now and again. Getting injured straight away was always likely after being out so long, but did Wenger plan for that? of course not! I know Barnet is one of the highest places in england and being in the hills your views may be more distant than mine on a couple of occasions in the San Siro. However if you genuinely think we will finish in the top 4 your are sadly mistaken. Both Spurs and Liverpool and their fans I know showed us respect until finally realising how bad a team we are. Granted 3 of our best players and Diaby are out long term but when in recent times have at least 3 of our best players and Diaby not been injured (please notice I do not count Diaby as a top player)? The manure game was a joke and we have not exactly been impressive against the mite of Bolton, Blackburn, Swansea and Newcastle. I can see us winning 2 or 3 away games and at most 8 or 9 at home with further hidings against the top clubs. Your optimism is to be admired but having been brought up near you in Southgate our drop to mid table mediocrity is as certain as me never being able to move back to North London from Hertfordshire. One thing I do agree with is Wenger fielding a kids team if England boss. After all like his current and recent squads nobody would stand up to him but after 32 years in football how can anyone teach him anything anyway? Our season and how bad it is will be dictated by the next 2 league games against 2 poor teams that could easily finish above us!

ridiculous you live in cloud cuckoo land we should be worried about being fourth from bottom rather than getting into the champions league. The panick buys on the last day of the transfer window do little to paper over the cracks and with Gazidis' statement that we will not be buying in January this is the squad we are stuck with. No right back a poor left back no back up centre half and only one scoring striker. God help us is RVP is injured. our midfield does not track runners hence the fits goal on Sunday or pick up players from throwins hence the second goal. The one chance we fashioned in the first half was down to RVP not the midfield. They missed three one on ones so we could have lost 5-1. The midfield created nothinh on Sunaday our centre half made the goal. Dont you people get it the management of our club has badly let us down not now but over a six year period. More concerned with making money selling shares to the Yank than insisting we invest in top quality players. Both the directors and manger are fully cupable. Always the financial mantra is brought out by Gazidis. If we go down and do not get up in the first year where is Gazidis's financial prudencey then. We have not bought a world class player since campbell and we will be the only team this season to ship four goals at Blackburn. Make no mistake we are in for a long season in a struggle against relegation and any more injuries could well push us down. The board and the manager must be sacked today. The longer it is left the worse the problem becomes.

Hahahahahaaha this must be some kind of joke or you didn't see the game. Sure arse had more possession but it was ineffectual, mostly side ways Spurs had more chances and much better chances and would have won by more goals if it was not for an outstanding display from the arse keeper

Gunners chief executive Ivan Gazidis insists failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League will not spell financial ruin for the club, who are languishing in 15th place in the Barclays Premier League, already eight points adrift of a top-four place - So not a mention about football or the fans then, it’s just pure finance that he’s bothered about. As soon as we get rid of this clown and that yank the better. Ever since Satanic Stan took over with his 66.6% shares we have slipped into becoming a mediocre team like Villa. We have to hound these pair of buffoons out or else we will slip into total obscurity

Your take on the Sunday game is a little blinkered. Arsenal did have the edge in midfield at times but created so little clear chances. Except for that funny looking man with mop hair most others were shots from the edge of the penalty area. Spurs split the Arsenal defence about 4 times and had clear chances which your keeper saved well. It was close but any neutral says Arsenal deserved to lose. Chin up Sid

Wonderful denial and the reason why Arsenal are falling so fast. Watch the game again and tell me that Arsenal were unlucky. If controlling the game is keeping the ball in safe areas and creating NO chances forcing the opposition goalkeeper into NO saves, then Arsenal dominated and were unlucky. The final score should have been 4-1. Tottenham soaked up the 'pressure' (let's face it there wasn't really any) regrouped after the goal and scored again and should have had at least 2 more. And suddenly every beautifully struck shot is lucky. Ver very sad, but very very funny.

You usually have to have some shots on goal to get what you deserve in football

Wenger could only improve on the current England Manager - 2 - 2 to Montenegro??? England players are very average, that is why the likes of Cahil or Jagileka won't make a difference. Watched the so called dogged determination of the English players on show last night - absolute rubbish. easily comparable to the way Arsenal currently play except Arsenal have won more trophies in the last 45 years
