Sometimes you don't get what you deserve in sport. Sunday at Spurs was such an occasion. For 60 minutes we controlled the game, yet a freak goal by Kyle Walker, reminiscent of Danny Rose's a few seasons ago, saw to it that our recent poor record against our neighbours continued. Szczesny has a lot of credit in the bank at the moment, so I won't get caught up blaming him for the goal. Even though he was at fault, I feel that over the season he will save us more points than he will lose.
The game turned with the arrival of Sandro, following which Spurs matched us in midfield and contained our passing game. Like other instances in Wenger's reign, he was beaten tactically, and perhaps switching to a five-man midfield following Sandro's entrance might have yielded a different result.
Let's put the season so far into perspective though:
- we lost at Spurs and United away; while no consolation, many teams will struggle against these two at their home ground
- although our loss at home against Liverpool was due to poor summer planning, we were missing key players
- we have a fairly clear run of games up to January to pick up points. Bar Chelsea and Man City, all games are winnable. If we do fail against so-called lesser teams, I may change my opinion
- fourth place is still obtainable. Spurs will have a bad patch and Liverpool can slip up
- nothing like a good siege mentality at the club, and there seems to be no sign of player unrest. The players are behind the manager
- we must beat Spurs and Utd at home
- we’re still undefeated in the Champions League
- home at Bolton in the Carling Cup, we should get to the quarter-finals and hope for a good draw.
The injury to Sagna is a blow, and I am loath to play Jenkinson or Djourou. I would try Koscielny or Coquelin and keep Song at centre-back. Write off Sagna for the season too...
Ramsey is a talented player but concedes possession far too frequently - he needs to improve this area of his game if he is to have a long career at Arsenal. Coquelin has impressed on the other hand, and deserves his chance in the team.
RVP and contract issues will run into next summer and beyond. If he joins Man City along with all his other ex-colleagues we should re-name this site from the “online gooner" to the "online blue mooner".
Creatively, we miss Cesc, who had the highest number of assists in Europe up to last season. Our play and possession in the final third has declined rapidly.
Nice to see Denilson has become a figure of hate at Sao Palo - he will probably be back next summer as we continue to pay whatever ridiculous wages were agreed in his last contract.
Wenger for England manager? I have a vision of him taking the England Under-15s side to a major senior tournament followed by much ridicule...
Will failure to get into the Champions League be such a bad thing? It may finally force a rethink at the club.
It's international week - how many players will come back injury-free? Hopefully RVP is unscathed and The Verminator is fit soon.
