Mettle: Mice or Men?

Something is lacking at Arsenal at the moment

Mettle: Mice or Men?

Gazidis: Snake oil salesman?

I am an Arsenal fan. I want the best for my team. I want Wenger, if possible, to turn this team around. I want better players coming in in January and next summer. I want at least a top four finish and maybe a good cup run this season, but much more in the future. I want to see the players playing their cojones off each game and playing good collective defense. Is all that too much to ask? I think not.

Mettle: vigor and strength of spirit or temperament. This is what Arsenal lack from top to bottom. The manager, players, and board. Too many times this team has given in, lacked the fight to win big, medium, or even small matches. The Carling Cup Final showed everyone clearly what we all were starting to suspect. This team has real issues. So how does one acquire mettle? How does a team gel together and build and maintain a fighting spirit? Can Wenger bring this team up from the depths it now finds itself? Is there a player who will take the reins, pledge his heart to the club, and say I will lead and we will flourish? I think it’s possible, but right now I don’t trust anyone at Arsenal. Just look at some comments coming out from the three top men this year:

-Gadzidis on the CL: "We would rather qualify for it but we have got a really stable model that could not just cope but do well and compete,"

-Wenger on the CL: "My record? I have just managed 14 years at this club [actually 15] and I have kept them 14 years in the Champions League and I wish it lasts another 14 years."

Snake oil salesmen. Double speak . Wenger claims being in the CL each year is like its own trophy, yet Gadizidis plays it down when it looks very possible we will miss out this year. These are the kinds of things that come out of their mouths that p*ss me off. You can’t have your cake and eat it too, now can you? And are we competing this year? If so with who? Swansea? What happens when we finish out of the top four Wenger? Is the Europa League just as good now as winning a trophy? I for one am tired of the same old excuses.

And this one-Kroenke on Wenger:

"Maybe it is one of those times when we have to work our way through, maybe with some young players. Arsène has been really good at developing these guys, people like Alex [Oxlade-]Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere. There are some really good players that Arsène thinks can be special. Arsène's our man."

Am I mistaken, or didn’t AOC come from another team’s youth system? Just like Walcott? Haven’t we been trying to “work our way through” with young players for 5 years now, and what have we achieved? If that doesn’t say it all, then I don’t know what does. Here’s what I hear from that quote, reading between the lines. Let’s keep making profits, who cares if we win anything, we can always shift the blame for losing to something or someone else. Relying on young players has backfired miserably! Only Jack seems to have the character to become great, a real leader. He shows heart and determination. Enough so that he played himself into injury trying to win something for his team. To build a team with mettle, you must get players with vast experience that have won things, achieved things. And find a few young ones that are born with it, like Jack. And that costs some cold hard cash. Which we have, but no one will spend. At least not on world class talent, ones with mettle.

I don’t claim to have all the solutions, but we all know where improvements are needed. Here’s a grocery list of what most intelligent, passionate fans think we need:

-Steel in the back four and a defensive coach to bring it out. Plus some better cover than former league two defenders.

-More attacking prowess to replace Cesc and Nasri. Someone really good like (Yes, I will mention him again) Eden Hazard. It will get the fans pumped and bring proven class to our midfield. We need that if our attack is to flourish again. Mario Gotze doesn’t look half bad either.

-A coach who covers all aspects of the game and an assistant who is not just a yes man. Can Wenger and Rice change enough at their age to be those men? Probably not, but we have to hope they do as Gadzidis, Kroenke, and the board love Wenger too much to part with him anytime soon. I’d say Guardiola or Ancellotti couldn’t do much worse.

-An emphasis in training on pressing the other team when on defense to get the ball back and then transition to attack quickly with a focus on end product, ie. shooting or crosses into the box. NO more tippy-tappy, pass 25 times and walk the ball into the net. Play more direct, not with long balls, but incisive passing that gets behind defenses and promotes our speed on the wings and down the middle. If we go up 2 or 3 goals, then maybe we possess to control the game. But, with an emphasis on solid defense first.

-Get a captain that isn’t afraid to yell at his teammates and call players out for slack performances. Now that I mention it, a coach that does this too. I want to see players pissed at the end of games when they lose. I want to hear them in press conferences talking only about how they are going to mend things, work harder, and then show it. No more apologies please. We’re tired of hearing it. Sounds to me like Van Persie is the next Cesc and may be gone next year. In my opinion he owes this club for sticking by him through all his injuries. Prove yourself at Arsenal. That would be really something. Anyone can win with a team like Barcelona behind them. And he is our captain. He should be the first to say he is not giving up.

Now back to my main point. To win anything this season or next, we must get back the mettle. Are Arsenal mice or men? Can they break this 6 year saga of no trophies and reach the heights of a championship? It is possible, even with this team. They do need all their key players to make it happen, sure. But, I have seen glimpses. Remember Dortmund? What about the first half at Blackburn? We see these periods of terrific offense and solid defense, but we need to see consistency. A complete shedding of the old skin, a rebirth to a mentality from years ago. I want to see teams fear our offense and our defense. I want our players to have that desire to bust a gut for their teammates and cover for one another, everywhere, every time. That’s what is needed. That’s what the fans deserve. I want to see goals like the great teams of the Championship winning sides. With a defense like a brick wall that opponents know will not be easy to break down. I hope this can be more than a dream. Mettle. Remember that word and what it means. Think of it when you watch Arsenal play. Winners have it. Losers want it. Who will we be? I hope it’s men.

The message is simple, Arsenal needs a new coach and a new medical team.

Ron- Fair points on my misty eyed vision of the returning legends! I'm not saying i would want the mentioned players as a number two, But surely DB10 in the coaching set up would be a good thing?I'd have Ta putting the kit out if it meant getting some passion in the changing room! There's no quick fix for the current problems at the club, It's going to be tough few years, But we've been through them before and we can again! We are Arsenal keep the faith!

Chris.....always engaged mate, don't fret! The Chapman led era was the most notable in our history.Graham bagged 6 pots in 8 full seasons before passing on the baton via Rioch onto Wenger who since the ''immense'' characters disappeared has failed miserably.10 trophyless campaigns out of 15 and counting!

Ronster - of course you are right, all Wenger had to do was put his feet up and light a big fat cigar. Which is why the record books show that he arrived at Arsenal after the most successful few years in their history.... Come on mate, engage brain before letting prejudices do the talking!

@Ron - circa 1980 - Jennings, rice, Young, Brady, O'leary, Devine, Stapleton, Nicholas - pretty foreignised already I think

Yes, the Daily Mail article on Denis and Ajax was a great read but let's not forget that Ajax have gone from a European powerhouse to also rans in a couple of decades. Their footballing philosophy is admirable as is their development of youth, now where have I heard that before!

Shaun - To be honest i can see why Adams isnt at Arsenal. Hes done nothing since retiring as a player and seems like a total fruitcake. Hardly qualifies him for a job at Arsenal. Guys like Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton, Bryan Robson were al Club legends but total disasters when handed Bosses jobs. The games full of others too. Whats Vieira done to justify being a right hand man? Whats Bergkamp done? Yes, a great player and bloke but hes not qualified to handle a pressure job. Wenger looks like he needs a better backroom staff for sure, but the Club need genuine proven men in there who can make a mark quickly and make a difference, not sentimentally driven choices with no track records on high salaries. There are enough rubbish players there being over paid already without adding to the burden on the coaching staff.

DW Thomas*I hope this can be more than a dream* It isn't just a dream, it's a pipe dream. What you want is the equivalent of football utopia.Van Persie will surely go and I'm already scared about our young talented keeper. Then they'll be replaced by cheap mediocre players. Our days at the top are sadly winding down.I'm still a fan but that's the cold hard truth.

I like reading fans views on Frank McLintock - I followed us home and away during that 71 double season and he was immense. It is away from home that you see the true mettle of players and without Frank, Arsenal would have won nothing in 1970 - 71. He was not only as hard as nails but a great footballer who led the team with great pride and passion. When Bertie Mee transferred him to QPR, they, QPR finished runners up while Arsenal had a relegation struggle for most of that season. I do agree with most views that Jack is the only player who shows that kind of bottle and it is bottle that this current team are sadly lacking.

I also found the Daily mail article a really interesting insight into how things could be done. I think most would agree that having former players/legends in the set up of the club can only be a good thing. Not having TA at the club in any sort of role is criminal, and letting paddy slip away to man city was another big mistake. When the stubborn french man finally goes we'll hopefully see the old boys flocking back to help make our club great again?!

  13. Ron

    Oct 13, 2011, 9:18 #14134

DW Thomas - Thats the price we pay for allowing the Club to become so 'foreignized'. Its a disgrace to be honest. The Club has hardly been a British Club for years. I know not all of these imports are weak willed, weak kneed part timers, but we ve had a glut of them who are down the years and a good few are theyre still there, festering away in that underwhelming, half baked squad that comprises quite a few who want the pay packet but not in return for any genuine commitment.

Back 5 were already here. Berkhamp was already here as was Parlour. Wright, the major influence, was already here. Berkhamp's influenced Marc Overmars decision to come here. Wenger added Viera, Petit, Pires, Llungberg, Henri. I have no idea why Wenger has been given so much credit down the years

I left out Szczesny even though I agree totally he has been massive. I am just tired of hearing our best players talk about moving to Barca some day. Szc: "I can't declare that I will spend my entire career here, but if I leave I will have a very important reason or I will go to Barcelona." If they don't have a clue about the fans' attitudes right now, they are clueless. How can you come out and say that kind of stuff when we just lost 3 key players to Barca and City. I want to hear our players talk about how they want to win and only at Arsenal. They are paid huge salaries to win for our team, not any other. It seems many of our current team and past players always want the quick fix, the easy way out. How about they win something first and then talk about winning with other teams? If RVP leaves and we make him captain, will the Pole be the next to leave for greener pastures? It's like making anyone captain is the curse that sends them on to another club. Wenger has it all wrong. I would have made TV captain and only given it to RVP while he was out. He plays with heart and steel and oozes leadership qualities imo. Or maybe co=captains. As for Bendtner and others like him, move them on. Get players who are dedicated to rebuilding the squad to its greatness again. However, that may include a new manager too!

LOYAL SINCE 1980 - you are spot on with your comments about Arsenal needing some of their top ex-players on the staff. I too remember wondering why on earth Wenger didn't take Viera on board after he retired. Dennis is right - Wenger should have done everything in his power to get Viera. But no, he has settled for the same old backroom staff who are bereft of any new ideas. Is it any wonder we can't even get the basics right on the pitch?

chris dee - spot on ! the culture of winning comes from the top down not the bottom up. Dein/Graham were hungry for trophies. Dein/Wenger hungry for trophies. Stan/Ivan/Wenger are hungry to make alot of money so how can they complain when all of their squad now wants to do the same !!! the culture of Arsenal is the culture of making money not winning at sports !!!

Good article. However, I am surprised you dont make any mention of Wojciech Szczesny!! To me he has been Arsenals player of the season so far, and just been voted EPA Player of the Month, by the fans, for the second consecutive month. When you were talking about players with leadership qualities and loyalty to Arsenal it was remiss of you not to include him with Jack Wilshire. Just watching this seasons games he to me, has been the only real leader on the pitch. I feel sure and confident that this young man will have all the credentials and quality to become the next long term Arsenal captain and lead the rebuilt team

Sadly, Wengers teams have lacked balls for some years. Teams like the 1971 crew cringe at them. Just hear Frank Mc Lintock speak. Hes dead on right every time he opens his mouth. This lot are the first Arsenal team in my years of supporting them ( since mid 60s) who other teams are happy to screw over and f--k with physically. Its been a disgrace for ages. The new signings plus Wilshere are exempt from this criticism i might add.

NOTHING will change until games stop selling out, and we've got too many stupid fans who still believe in Wenger's project and that always next year will be our year. Unfortunately our s**t players are paid too much for them to bother upping their game, and our best players aren't paid enough for them to want to stay.

Cold, hard ,ambition, mettle, ruthlessness, intelligence is required to become a team that wins the big prizes. These attributes should start with the board and filter down through the club.Have our board got that ?Do Kroenke et al really want to challenge Barca,Real ,Utd etc because they give the impression that are they satisfied, complacent and happy with the status quo, which seems to have infected many of our fans as well, many of whom accept that we are a second tier club. A Championship here,a Cup there, a top four finish seems to be the limit of our ambition. We shouldn't be looking to a 20 year old Jack Wilshere to instill a bit of character, courage and ambition in the rest of the players, our management team, the owners of the club and so many happy- with- our- lot fans.

AW biggest mistake was getting away from his template for sucess pace, power, height. His past teams at times had their defensive shortcomings but opposition sides knew you couldn't take liberties with them.Highbury & even the early E******* years away teams generally wrote off a trip to Arsenal as a game they had to play out of their skin to get a point. Not now & things at the club have drifted to the point we are at now.I can't see much changing until 2014 AW contract will be up & you can see already the man looks under severe stress. This current board won't remove him £7m p.a to pay up & i don't think they even trust themselves to make a new appointment.AW is the only football man around the board that's the way he likes it nothing is questioned. To rely on so many young players was always going to be flawed & to think they would stay at Arsenal out of some loyalty was frankly bizarre.AW with all his experience over the years should have realised there is no loyalty in football his dream has basically turned into a nightmare of his & the board's making.

All of what you require will not be achieved under Arsene Wenger unfortunately. I would love it for that to be the case. But Wenger, again has shown he has not changed his ways this summer. Again his most expensive siging was a 17 year old. Again, he did not invest in the defence until the last second of the transfer window when Vermaelen was ruled out for months. Yet again a young lad (Ramsey) is being asked to shoulder the creative responsibilities in midfield. We were desperate for a centre forward for when VP takes his customary 3 month lie down. He sold Bendtner and bought a bloke who was relegated to ligue 2 last season, and hasn't played him yet in the league!!! When you take a step back and look at the decisions the guy is making it is laughable. don't get me wrong Wenger has earned the right for time to get us back into Europe positoins in the league. But all the signs are that he is not going to change the failing system we currently have. Rather stick to it. I'd adocate these signs have been around for years. Think to 2002-03 when we were miles ahead in the league yet we buckled and let a 12 point gap go to united. this was down to Wenger not securing quality players in January as we had a dearth of injuries back then. My feeling is that the train has left the station and there will be a sequence of events over the next 9 months that will lead to us having a new manager come August 2012.

You have unpicked those quotes and related them to each other very well to expose these men for what they are. Well done that man. Watching Spain the other night it reminded me that this is the style of play Wenger wants to emulate. Problem is he doesn't have the players, and doesn't bother with the side of the game when you don't have the ball i.e. the ferocious will to win the ball back that Spain/Barca show. He'll keep banging his head against the wall in the same old fashion though.

Mettle? How about Frank McLintock. Frank recently revealed that in 20 years as a player he earned the grand total of £90,000....I repeat £90,000.Anyone who is happy to blindly hand over their hard earned cash to a board, management and players who rake in millions and openly diss the fanbase is a total mug.

It's been said before, but we lack the 'over my dead body' spirit encapsulated by TA, Uncle Bouldy and Martin Keown. Copenhagen 1994 - there was no way we were going to lose that game. We had players prepared to throw their bodies on the line for the love of Arsenal. Man U's work ethic under whisky nose is so much better than ours these days. Every player, even some fairly average ones, is drilled at their role and they work as a cohesive unit. Some of our players would do well to look like they vaguely give a sh*t about our great club. As Martin's great quote on the wall of the grove goes 'atleast look as if you want to play for the Arsenal!' New players should be made to read those quotes one by one and gather what it means to represent AFC and what it takes to be a legend.

There was a great piece in the daily mail on-line yesterday, (not my paper of choice i must add!)Keown met with the legend that is Dennis Bergkamp, at ajax, give it a read, basically at Ajax they have former players involved at coaching level, bergkamp, de boer brothers, davids, overmars, wim yonk, stam, blind, roy, you would never get this Arsenal, Wenger is a control freak, can you imagine him taking an alternative view from another player, NEVER! In the article, regarding veria, Bergkamp said that Arsenal should have pulled all the steps to get him on board in the summer as he would have been a massive influence on the younger players. For this club to get back on track, they need the former players involved, but while Wenger is there it will never happen.

Alot of good points in the article, especially regarding the training! Alas, Groundhog Day vis a vis Gooner grumblings! The slow and sly drop in the standard of the players who grace the club shirt has compounded all of the above points, simple as! Nothing wrong with the formation we play, put Henry up front, Bergkamp behind him, Ljungberg and Pires either side, Vieira and Silva in front of Campbell, Lauren, Cole and Keown and Wojiech! Catch my drift? Essentially, the calibre of players are responsible for maintaining and pushing club standards, it's ok to talk about CEO's, sharholders etc, but the players are living a priviliged life as well paid sportsmen! Medals should be the measure of their achievements, not endorsements and Twitter coverage! Doesn't bode well when you have a Manager who is over-protective neither! I know there are alot of things not quite right with our club at the moment but, we should look at the players 1st! The results on the pitch, as a result of their motives, drive and actions can change everything!

One thing I do not understand is this current board, do they not know that success off the pitch comes hand in hand with success on it. If they want us to be a big club, if they want the league, if they want the champions league then you have to invest in big players who have the mettle and skill and pay these players what they deserve. If we do not compete on the pitch our shares, profit and marketability will also diminish = no success in the markets. This board needs to go, it is not supportive of the team and has no managerial ability to address the areas we are failing in. This is ARSENAL we have a tradition and a history we are a great club. Prove it.

You remind me of Joe Fitzpatrick who used to write loads of stuff on the Gooner site saying much the same as you are. I have often wondered what happened to him and have always assumed he just ran out of energy just like I have. I wonder how long you have felt like you do? I have been disgusted with Wenger and the board for several years now and I have simply reached a point where I am ashamed to say I don't care anymore. I go back years with the club and I am well used to Arsenal playing badly but this time it is different as us fans are being taken for mugs and I have just had enough. I admire your fighting spirit and hope all the things you wish for happen, but don't hold your breath.

Oh, for a 'Would you believe it!' Adams or a Keown 'Ruud van s**t himself' type. But I suppose you get what you pay for in the hotbed of world class football that is the French League 1. We do need skillful players and I certainly agree we need mettle, courage and coldness. But perhaps those attributes don't go with the 'It doesn't matter if we don't win' attitude that is pr****ent these days at the club.

I agree with The Hampshire Gooner to an extent. Even as far back as The Invincibles there was a pattern to how we played. We'd often outpass and outplay sides but then inexplicably gift them a sniff of a way back into the game through a lack of concentration or defensive lapses. Often when the opposition had no right to be in the contest. We have never been masters of defending as a team under AW. Thankfully in 2004 we had such good players going forward it compensated for defensive lapses. I just watched the Sp*rs 4 v 5 Arsenal. A classic example. We kept getting 2 goal leads and then offering them a way back into the game. TH's stray pass. We've never been totally comfortable at killing games off or running down the clock under AW. Numerous leads have been let slip. It isn't new. Bolton away 2003 was a painful one. We never seem to learn. Back then we had the quality to compensate by scoring more goals. Another example - Arsenal 5 v 3 Boro. Cygan and Lehmann contrive to make it easy for Boro. (What a f'ing game by the way! I miss those days.)

We have had zero mettle for years. It has not been lost overnight as some people would have you believe. Keep dreaming on the current regime turning things around, it won't happen. Good piece though!
