Arsene: How about a chest bump with Pat Rice?

I love beating Chelsea, especially at Stamford Bridge. You can’t ask for a better weekend result than that. I won’t go into detail about the game or each player’s performance. Just a few observations: we played with effort and commitment the entire 90 minutes. We don’t - or haven’t - seen that enough in past seasons. That’s what champions do. We came back twice down to win by two goals! We missed good chances, but still scored five goals! Santos, I have to say, I like. He is not the most disciplined defender, but he has great skill and can finish. Plus, he has already scored as many goals as Clichy did in his entire time at the Arsenal! And he can defend when he wants to. Ramsey played much better, Kos was immense - again - and, all around, the team looked like champions. And, as I said before, van Persie is our talisman, the key to our winning. No, we are not a one-man team, but where would we be without the Dutchman?

The West Brom game was another solid performance, albeit WBA did not play all that well and, with Odemwingie out, they really didn’t do much going forward. Yet Arteta’s goal is the type of goal I have been writing about for some time now. It was one out of the pages of the Invincibles era - a great series of passes with a skilful one-time finish - forward passing with end-product. We should be scoring a lot more of that type of goal with the quality we have. That’s the Arsenal I know and love. Yes, we need to win ugly sometimes, but we are a team known for that style of play the world over. RVP is the man of the season so far, but Arteta has put in the solid performances that you want from a midfielder. He is good defensively, passes well, and shows his quality each and every game with hard work. He is our man behind the scenes, helping make the team tick. It is his and the others’ work ethic that sets this team apart from seasons past.

Now, with all that said, we are not there yet. However, the little sparks of belief are coming back, not only to the team, but to us fans as well. Arsenal is looking like a group that pulls for each other and will work to win games. No longer do we look like a team that just shows up and expects to win based on our skill or tippy-tappy passing. We need still to win a major trophy this season, but the Arsenal train is not too far from the station of success. Despite our recent run, I stick by my opinion that we need reinforcements in January. I like the rumour of Götze from Dortmund. He is slick, young but not too young, and has won things. With him, Wilshire, Ramsey, Arteta, Rosicky, and Song, we would no doubt have one of the top midfields in England, maybe the world. Furthermore, we are in need of a top striker who can score goals and give RVP the breaks he will need, but no more unproven talented youth or inexperience! The team needs quality players who have been there and done that. More of them, please!

Now, a Christmas list of a few things we still need to see from the team and manager.

• First, Santos got a little payback on Lukaku. After he was fouled/checked by Lukaku, but no call was given, they scored, but, a little while later, Santos got him back and was not called for the foul. Give us more of that, boys. Let the other team know that, if you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us. You will get it back as well as you give it. It needs to be something this team does routinely: bleed for each other. Stupid fouls are never welcomed, but letting the other team see your resolve and toughness is something we’ve lacked for some time. Also, it was nice to see Vermaelen giving West Brom a little rough-and-tumble to break up their play, too.

• Second, someone (maybe Santos?) really needs to teach Wenger how to celebrate. It’s OK to raise your arms above your head and jump, Arsène! Don’t get me wrong, though. I don’t want to see anything like what Villas-Boas does with his OTT jumping around, but a little fist-pumping, or maybe a chest-bump with Pat Rice might do. That would actually be something to see, now that I picture it. Just do something more than hold your hands waist high and slightly shake them up and down. Especially after that fifth goal at the Bridge. Le Prof needs to let loose some steam!

• Last, let’s make clean sheets a top priority, at least against teams like West Brom or those who should be significantly below us in the table. I, for one, would love to see our opponents prevented from scoring in many games this year. That would truly show we have improved defensively for the long haul. It would also mean that each player would know their defensive job as a priority, and not secondary, but equal to their attacking work. Again, this is what winners do, in any sport. If only Wenger thought the same.

Add those things to our stockingful of a few new players in January and I do believe we might finish the season with something more than coal. This season could still have much in store.

last season's collapse was as bad as arsenal have been in my 40 years watching us play. We were humiliated by our team. It was a drawn out nightmare that continued into this season when ten new first teamers finally joined and our key players finally left, creating carnage. Wenger got last seasons signings horribly wrong with defence even weaker and attack horribly dependant on just one man and that led to everyone losing faith in him including his proteges. He's clearly prone to backing the wrong horse and too stubborn to do what needs doing on occassion just because everyone says so but he's made some big changes and we've seen a glimmer of old arsenal, a team we can be proud of again and for that i think we're all grateful. He certainly talks like he's realised how hurt the fans are and that he knows he's miles off a challenging team which is also relieving. He needs to find chamakh's mojo or perform a miracle and buy a new one in january otherwise we'll end up well short of fourth ( which will be chelsea or spurs) and that sadly is the most likely outcome but the manner of our season will count more than the place achieved relative to last year (as spurs and liverpool are so much better than before) and we need to come out of it with our heads held high else he'll lose more players and our position may become untenable at the very top table for another two seasons or more.

Jonesey has hit the nail on the head here. 4th was a massive disappointment last season, if we get 4th this season Wenger will be hailed as a miracle worker and describe it himself as his 'greatest achievement' - even though, if indeed it comes to pass, the very reason it will have been such a climb up from where we were is his gross mismanagement last summer. You couldn't make it up.

The team has improved. No need to analyse to see that, but then we had hit a real low and the only way is up, so they say from there. Its at stages like this that the team needs re inforcing again though with the Winter months ahead always beeing a drain on the strongest players. Yes,a striker in January plus 'A N Other' elswhere perhaps? I reckon we can get a top 4 slot, but to do it we need to not bother with the CC too much. Send the kids out v Man C (CC) and to hell with worrying about the result. Whatever happens, we ve found a work ethic again and the departures of the delusional sulk squad ie messrs Fabregas, Clichy and Nasri will eventually be seen as a bonus. Theyve gone and taken their posing and strutting tendencies with them. there will other sulking whingers out of the door too. You know that dont you Mr Arshavin? Get your plane booked and you ll get a decent discount if you do it now.

So what you are saying is that, for about the sixth season in a row, we are 2-3 players short of being champions with, supposedly, money in our transfer budget left unspent. It's all a bit too ****ing familiar.

@Dave Rooney was **** last season yet Utd won the league at a canter.RVP is a one man attack. If Rooney gets injured they have Hernandez Berbatov and Welbeck to play we have Barndoor Chamakh and DVD man.Thats a big big difference.Wenger is getting away with murder. This time last year he was telling us this was his best squad ever now he is saying we will get 4th place and we should be happy with that. This team is still well short. Its amazing how many fans have fallen for Wenger's bull**** again. Here's a fact the AKB's keep forgetting in the last 6 seasons we have finish 4th FOUR times.Well worth his £7m a year more than Ferguson gets

I would certainly like to meet your Auntie, Dave. She sounds a very liberated and possibly stimulating person.Interchangeable genitalia is no mean feat! If AW had a pickled nose and an incomprehensible accent he would be SAF! Good points though. We are where we are and we have who we have, and we are beginning to look good - much more in control and good partnerships developing. Yes, to maintain and enhance our thrust we need to buy in the January sales - front, middle and back. I have never thought of Arsene as Santa Claus, so however many lists we send in, we are unlikely to get what we want!! Just like Christmas in 1938! So let's enjoy what we have - while it lasts. Why should not RVP stay fit for the season? I know. Pigs are fuelled and ready to fly! Arsenal for ever and a day!

Wenger truly is a genius. The only way he could get away with AGAIN not spending our massive transfer money pot was to fool everyone into thinking we were relegation candidates at the start of the season when in fact we are very average and quite capable of scraping fourth place. Now all our more gullible fans are hailing the transformation. And another season not challenging for the trophies that matter despite the huge resources at our disposal.

Yes the tide has turned it had to.From the worse start in 50 years and the worse defeat in 115.But that worst start should not be forgotten and neither should the reasons for it.Wengers stubborn reason for not signing players early instead of deadline day has cost us badly. Our season is on a knife edge one injury to RVP and where will we be?Park and Chamakh. We need to buy 3 players minimum in january a back up keeper a LB and a quality back up for RVP.Sadly i believe the recent run of results will blind him to the bleeding obvious.Wenger should not be left off the hook so easily some fans are easily pleased

yes i agree things are starting to look a little better and 7 points from norwich, fulham and wigan ( 9 would be great ) should put us up to 4th or 5th but with in touching distance of 3rd place, but like most of you im worried about any injury to RVP, who should we buy to help and ease the burden on robin, step forward Lukas Podolski currently and F.c cologne 43 goals in 92 games for Germany 7 or 8 goals for a mid table cologne this season aged 26 and has already been watched by Arsenal, this man would be a great signing and it may cost between £15mill - £18 mill to get him but if we can then sell billy bendtner for 7 or 8 million then to me that is good business. As for the centre back position Djourou and squillaci are just not good enough, rather than going for cahill my choice would be Jan Vertonghen, team mate of TV in the Belgian national team and current Ajax captain, although i do think we have a rough diamond in koscielny so thats a tricky one to call, all i do ask mr Wenger is do any transfers straight away in early January and not in the last hours like you did in the last transfer window.

To all those saying "If RVP gets injured blah blah" if my Auntie had a penis she'd be my uncle. There's no point speculating on that sort of thing. If Man City lost Silva they'd struggle (don't deny it). Man United without Rooney are barely top 4. Chelsea without Mata are slow and 1 dimensional, Liverpool without Suarez/gerrard are top 10. If we're a 1 man team than so are many other "title contenders".

RvP what if, what if, what if posts are tedious John. Barca without Messi, Manure without Rooney? Do their 'fans' harp on about possible injury. No. Stop being so f*cking negative.

I tell you what lets just take this season game by game, honestly, we may even make the top 4! A few years back, we had wingers/strikers/ scoring for fun, I mean wingers notching 8/9 goals each!! Ljunberg?Overmars?? etc!! If and when RVP goes off the boil/gets injured, as all strikers do (remember Rooney leading up to the WC 2010 anyone??) where will the goals come from?? Like I said 4th place is what we're playing for, Wenger knows it, and it's massive let down for the fans, as it reflects that the quality we have in our squad has fallen below previous standards!

Here's a thought how about a certain argentinian striker come january, that would send a message to the rest, a message of clear intent and ambition.

John, you say Santos cannot defend - but did you watch the second half against Chelsea? I think he had 3 or 4 one on ones with Sturridge / Bosingwa and won them all. He's no Nutty Nigel but I disagree when you say he cannot defend.

Quality forward is a must RVP fitness worries aside.Tactically in some games & situations a top forward alongside RVP or coming off the bench would make a big difference.M'vila is being looked at closely Song is also in the last 18months of his contract. From what i know we are also looking for a back up keeper certainly in the summer Almunia & Mannone out of contract.Fabianski & Rosicky are also approacing the end of their deals so we could see more movement in january.

Would love to share the optimism but we've been here before, great side in the making just need 2/3 quality players to complete the picture.Others more cynical than me say Wenger isn't up to it but january will provide the answer. There is no way this squad can get through to May without quality reinforcements. This is where Wenger needs someone at the club to push him past his financial conservatism. Not holding my breath.

What we need to do now is sign a few top quality players in January, to enhance the squad, send a signal out to RVP, wilshere and the fans that we are once again in the business of competing for throphies. Then build on that in the summer.

I wonder what would have happened if RVP was not there - would somone else have had 10 goals this season - would his quota of goals have been shared between two people - we will never know - the reason he has scored so many times is because he has found himself in space and had the opportunity to do so and this is because of the formation that is being played right now - had it been 4-4-2 maybe he would have scored only half of the goals - all I can say is long may it continue - forget Cahil and use the money for Geotze

Sadly our expectations have been greatly reduced. Now a fourth place finish is being seen as a title win by Wenger Gazidis and the AKB's.We used to start the season thinking we could win the title those days are long gone. With Wenger its all light and mirrors.Last season we went from 2nd to 4th in the last two weeks of the season this season to go from 7th to 4th will be treated like a triumph.Strange world isnt it

DW Thomas, the best midfield in the world? Your getting carried away as is CB about new players.A top striker&midfielder+a quality defender are needed. The team is playing much better but there is still a long way to go. I say this as a supporter of over 40yrs&when i say defender i mean as backup for TV because the BFG isnt the answer.Kos has improved immensely and deserves his place alongside TV.

We are three points ahead on the equivalent games last season... Central defence great (and obvious focus on defence with better cover for the fullbacks), fullbacks who can attack and cross the ball, midfield gelling, brilliant goalie, RVP scoring for fun, pace on the wings, experienced back up in Benny, Arsh and Rosicky, little Jack to come back (and other youth talent bubbling under). To be critical of the article -'If only Wenger thought the same.' is unnecessary and wrong, as is ' a few new players in January' - one good attacker would probably be fine.
