RVP: Couldn’t do it on his own

Much bollocks is being spouted about Arsenal currently being a one-man team. We're not, were merely utilising our current best asset in a way which produces the best results for the team. Robin is scoring goals because when playing he's the 'go to' player in our team, because he's the focus of the attack and because the entire squad realises that he is the 'go to' player in the team. When Song had a choice of Gervinho or Robin at Norwich he chose Robin. Robin scored, we scored and it was just an obvious best choice to make. Great for Arsenal, great for Robin but maybe not quite so great for Gervinho. Its not rocket science and it doesn't mean Gervinho wouldn't have scored. He might have missed, just as Robin missed a quite a few chances before finding the net at Carrow Road. Difference is that Gervinho will get slagged by idiot fans for missing while Robin gets forgiven because he's the main man, or from the team's viewpoint the dominant personality - the Alpha player if you like. Its also why he's captain.

It's interesting that not all players can cope with being the Alpha player, while others can't apparently cope with not being the Alpha player. I suspect Arshavin and Chamakh may be cases in point, if either were the focal point of the team they'd certainly play better, but they're not and so don't. It would certainly explain why some seemingly top players fail when they move to bigger clubs: Berbatov for example - the Alpha star with a North London cowboy outfit but now just another nothing squad player at United. It might also explain why some great players fear moving to bigger clubs. Alan Shearer or Matt Le Tissier for example. I'm guessing they couldn't cope with not being the Alpha player and so happily remained big fish in small ponds.

Having a dominant player is inevitable, maybe even more so when clubs employ world class players. Almost every team at every level in world football has a dominant player, or a best player if you prefer, and Arsenal are no exception. No player is ever bigger than the club we're told but I'm not convinced that's entirely true even though all players can be replaced. Just as the current Arsenal team always seem to look for Robin it's much the same with Barca - they move the ball around and make space in order to set Messi on a run or into a position where he can score. It doesn't mean that if Messi wasn't there they wouldn't be creating chances or scoring it just means there would alternative focal points and maybe a lower percentage of chances converted.

It's no coincidence that in 2011 Robin has been in his best ever form whilst also being Arsenal's Alpha player. He became the Alpha player because with both Cesc and Nasri in poor-form/injured/crap mindsets at the start of the year he became the obvious new lead. Since May Robin has become the official captain and gone up yet another gear. You have to imagine that being the best player in a squad such as Arsenal's is a seriously big deal even for world class stars - it surely gives them that extra 5%, or in Robin's case maybe even an extra 10%. It is inevitable that both the press and less unenlightened fans will view this in a negative light, because it's what the media scum and unenlightened fans do. When I say negative light I mean resorting to the couldn't cope without him stories. To say that Arsenal can only score when van Persie is in the team is a nonsense because all teams adapt to the absence of any individual and also find a new or temporary Alpha player. Who that might be I have no idea but it would happen. It could even be one of our other numerous goalscorers this season: Ramsey, Walcott, Gervinho, Song, Arteta, Arshavin, Gibbs, Santos, Vermaelen, Chamakh, Benayoun, Chamberlain or Park. That's 14 different goalscorers in just 20 matches. So if you do happen to be one who believes Arsenal are a one player team perhaps you could tell me which other Clubs can boost as many different goal scorers?

Have to agree with Hamza about any decent centre forward scoring lots of goals for Arsenal because we seem to make more chances than any other team but have lacked someone to show for the ball in the box. However RvP is a true world class player and we have now got players who would get into any team anywhere .Vermaelan best CB in Pl. Is there better GK than Sczechny.I dont think so.Song is just amazing and the other players like Ramsey are improving from week to week and thats without Wiltshire who will give this team the little bit of flair that cesc had. Big things on the way guys!

Well done Brian. Excellent analysis and a refreshing insight in the face of all the pathetic statements from the so called 'professional' commentators. It would be nice to think they would have the good grace to eat humble pie but they won't, still crooning about the Mancs and the Pool. The true team performance against Dortmund was a joy to watch and I was delighted to see the way the 'team ethic' was encapsulated by the short shift put in by Benny.

One-man team?? Quite the opposite, actually. Take nothing away from RvP cos he is THE MAN, but I have personally believed for some time now that any good striker playing regularly as the Arsenal centre-forward would be made to look awesome cos I think we play with 7 goal-providers, 2 centre-halves and a keeper. Some days it feels like all we need is someone to stick the ball in the net. Lemme say it again... this does not detract from the quality and form of RvP... we all are loving it to no end... He is pure class. But I say we're the total opposite of a one-man team... Wenger has built a team of players to create chances and RvP is now taking full advantage of the setup.

Song didn't pass to Gervinho even though it was the easy pass to put him through one on one because he knew he'd miss, just as he did through one on one against Dortmund last night. I'm sorry but we are far too reliant on RVP. Barca have Messi but if he were injured they still have Villa, Pedro, Alexis, not to mention Xavi and Iniesta. When United were "reliant" on Cristiano Ronaldo they still had Rooney and Tevez. Take RVP out of this side and we're a mid table team

Arsenal are not a one man team, but there's no doubt that if he was not in the team the results against Norwich & Dortmund would have been different !

I agree no great team is merely a one man team (save Barcelona without Messi they are simply not as good-no one would be), yet RVP is clearly what is saving us this season. Gerv and Theo are performing well at times, but no one on the planet comes close to RVP right now and his consistency. We still need a creative replacement for Cesc even with Jack coming back as I believe to be great once again we need a superb midfield. Once we have that, then the notion we are a one man team goes away. TV and Kos are now the bottom of our spine, RVP the top. All we need is to secure one or two signings for the middle and we can challenge for any honors. The best thing about RVP is his leadership and from what is being talked about the leadership of the new boys too. Older players seem to better understand words like commitment, hard work, and mettle. They know they don't have as much time left as someone like Cesc or Nasri or even Wilshire (although he and Cesc have the required character). Experience and desire go a long way to winning things. You do have to sift through all the b.s. stories of the media and even Wenger himself to see things clearly. Hopefully today a good result against Dortmund will push the team on to bigger and better things. When the team is clicking, there aren't many better sides in the world. And maybe only one more entertaining.

We will soon find out when RVP gets injured. The truth is because of our fool of a manager RVP is relied on too much.We need a striker to back him up.Or else he will be burnt out after Xmas like Cesc was last season. And yes RVP will leave in the summer to win titles. Thanks Wenger

I'm so worried we have one of the very top strikers in the world banging in goals nearly every game. It's a real worry. I wish our midfielders/wingers wouldnt pass to one of the best strikers in the world so much in attacking positions and maybe give our fullbacks or defensive midfielder a chance to practice their shooting . . . . I bet Barca are REALLY concerned about Messi's ridiculous goals and assist per game rate over the last four seasons. Really bad news for Barcelona. FFS the media spouts a load of bull****.

I'd say you are absolutely spot-on in your analysis Brian.A really good piece of social psychology brilliantly applied to the Arsenal football club. I hope everyone who reads it will go with you and reject the superficial analysis of the popular press - and the cowardly half wit$ on the box! My one concern - at the moment - is that the Club will not buy in the January window - that could prove disastrous. I don't have your confidence Brian about in-house replacements. AW, at his press conference, said that the Club was not looking to buy anyone at the moment - at the same time as cautiously saying that JW will not be ready until the end of January. So we could get badly caught out. In attack - if RVP (whom God preserve) succumbs to injury, in midfield - where we need creative guile although Arteta is playing well - and looking good says my wife; and at the back where PM seems dazed and vulnerable and Santos seems creative but slightly ill-disciplined (mad!). AW has clearly been reading Gooner online, for him to indicate that he is thinking of leaving. Very astute of him - almost a reversal overnight on the comments to be found on these pages! AW also stayed in his own press conference, whereas SAF did a runner when he got a question he didn't like!. Straight to the whisky I should think. Also , AW's German is impressively fluent. It has to count in our assessment of AW's qualities that he is highly intelligent, articulate, cultured and self-effacing - (and, at his best, has brought the most beautiful football to this country!) He still looks good in a suit! You do not find those qualities together in any other PL manager. Good luck boys tonight . I suppose AW could always shout instructions in German to confuse BD! Arsenal for ever - and thanks Brian for a very erudite post!

The problem here is that we all pay far too much attention to the press and SKY TV Pundits (some of whom are credible ex-footballing people - others, particularly the columnists are just idiots who rake up stories to rile people up so they can sell their newspapers). Newspapers are no longer purveyors of NEWS, but a complex business with so much pressure on journalists to dredge up anything to sell the papers. Unfortunately, how do you stop what they print having an impact on players, managers etc? You cant. If arsenal has multiple scorers the press will say we lack a defined target man and that's why we're not winning. Now that we have RVP scoring most of our goals, we're a one-dimensional team (forgetting that RVP is scoring because he is playing every game he wants to play, how he wants to play and the other strikers we have are happy to sit still and let him carry on scoring for the greater good of the club). What we shouldnt have is RVP also scoring all our goals in the Carling and FA Cups - he must be on the bench for those tournaments and one of Gervinho, Chamakh, Walcott or Arshavin need to start scoring in thos etournaments regularly so that they can then slowly transfer that form into the league matches to ease RVP's burden When the press decide to turn the screw on any manager, club or player, there's very little anyone can do about it - that's today's reality

Yeah you make a good point, i mean with playing a 4-5-1 he is expected to get a good number of goals. Though he is excellent at bringing in other players (although I'd like Walcott to be a striker this is where i think he would struggle). Other players probably aren't as good at taking chances (Gervin.- case in point) because we dont place much emphasis on them over RVP.

You mention 14 different goalscorers so far but none of them are chipping in regularly. I also don't have the faith you do that another Alpha player would emerge if he did get injured. That's not what's happened in recent seasons when key players have got injured, the goals have simply dried up, so I'd suggest the strongest indicator for what would happen lays at our own club rather than what would happen at Barca.

I agree with this article and would also add: Is the worth of a player only measured in number of goals scored???? It's a ridiculous notion and shows a grave lack of knowledge of the game...Bob Wilson suggested in a recent article that Sczeszney was the 2nd most consistent performer in the team..and how much recognition is he getting for his saves that have jept us in a gam or preserved a lead. What about Theo and Gervinho's assists? They're doing their job as wingers. How about Vermaelen and Koscielny...? They're doing their defensive job...The whole team is a well-oiled machine at the moment and working efficiently. We are utilising our most productive route to goal, end of story, and as the writer points out: in Van Persie's absence, another scorer will step up or. Maybe the goals will be spread, but as long as the whole team is ticking over, the goals will come

We're not a one man team but we do rely too much on RVP. When he's not playing we are a much different outfit and as i have heard being said, with him we are a very good team but without we won't trouble any of the bigger teams. I like Gervinho and the effort he puts in but we definately need another top quality striker and also need the other players to chip in with their share of goals.

Right on the button! I read with disbelief when pundits who claim to know the game make comments like that. There is no way a team can be a one man team. I would not have put it quite like you did mate.

You are essentially right. A small point: 14 scorers have scored abt 16 goals between them and another 11 from persie. So even if there is going to be another alpha player, it is not an obvious choice. When persie was playing with cesc and nasri, those three were the top scorers. And you always had goals in RvP as long as he was playing. Difference right now is u dont feel that abt anyone else in the team right now.

The 'one man team' jibe is up high there on the crapometer scale with the 'not won anything for 6 years'diatribe. Statements like these amount to being a staple diet made by idiots for idiots i.e printed media and SKY for the benefit of those who gorge on every word of the Mail, Sun and the Mirror or every broadcast of the atrocious 'SKY news' or the even worse 'Sunday Supplement' most of whom never go to a game. Lets face it, if RVP really was a one man team, we could just use him and the keep the rest of the squad fit by their non use. Rosicky as the new Skipper!!
