RVP: Will the goals come if he is rested?

Trips to the Reebok throughout Premier League history have always been tough affairs. Perhaps the most disappointing result was in 2003, when we let slip a two-goal lead and went on a downward spiral from which we never quite recovered that season. The draw was our first of 2012 and indicates the relative decline of the squad since our heady days in the early noughties. Twelve points behind the Spuds and five behind Chelsea, with Newcastle back up there and Liverpool showing some form; it is actually beginning to feel like the mid '90s again...

The Manager has stated that every game should now be treated as a cup game, which, judging by Sunday, means we give the opposition a two-goal lead before we wake up. It was probably the first time I can remember where, after coming back from a two-goal deficit, I wasn't wildly celebrating. I have quite simply lost faith in the management and training staff and, as stated in my previous article, we will learn nothing about the team at the end of the season that we don’t know already. Regardless of whether we finish fourth or not, changes must take place in the summer.

At least some of our full-backs are returning to fitness, Sagna has been missed, while Gibbs needs to play the remaining 15 games of the season without getting injured before I can make a judgment on him. However, I do feel that a change of tactics was required when all of our full–backs were injured. Consider the benefits of playing a 3-5-2 formation. It would have allowed Vermalen, Mertersacker and Koscielny to occupy the defence (with Djourou and Miguel as the back-ups), while, on the left and right flanks, Walcott and Chamberlain could have used their pace and adapted their game slightly. However this would require defensive coaching and a tactical nous which is not evident at the moment.

Jack Wilshire played 50 games last season, while Wenger at the same time stated that we "kill" our younger players and they suffer from burn-out if overplayed...is it any wonder he has missed the entire season? Aaron Ramsey is another example of a player the boss described as being in the "red zone", yet he has already played 31 games this season and, in all likelihood, will reach 50...please don't be surprised when:

a) Wenger complains of him playing at the Olympics
b) He is injured for the rest of next season
c) Wenger points to a) next season as to the reason why he is absent.

It made my mind boggle when he sent Frimpong out on loan now...why not rest Ramsey and play Song alongside Frimpong and give Arteta the licence to roam forward? Yet more evidence to support the belief that ANLKB (see my previous article for explanation of acronym).

Apparently there will be squad rotation on Saturday versus Blackburn, which means that RVP and Ramsey will be rested and we will have the pleasure of watching Arshavin trawling around the pitch.

Seriously - and this is point two of ANLKB - how did we sign the best player of the 2008 Euros, and make him look like Gus Ceaser? I would like him to leave, not because I don't admire him, but just so he can go to a club where he would be able to play in his best position (through the middle) and make an impact in the latter stages of his career.

Anyway, as negative as I have been in the past few weeks, with AC Milan, Spurs and Liverpool to come, the club needs our fans - so black bin bags are a funny idea but at this stage let’s unite behind the team, regardless of its flaws, and see how far it takes us

I am tired of reading all this negativity about our great club...why you think saying Wenger out makes a bit of difference on this forum is beyond me, you are wasting your breath. Agree with Canada gooner that he is one of the best managers we have ever had, and I say that as a supporter of over 50 years...seen some desperate times and seen some brilliant times...and please don't get me started on that lot down the road, over 50 years without a league title...be grateful for what you get, their "star" striker is not even their player.... I will say that I can't stand players that don't try and earn a small fortune but we are not the only club with these parasites. My biggest gripe is the lack of comment from the club and the lack of honesty about how much money we have or don't have to spend on buying players. However for the rest of the season let's please get behind the team, they need our support more than ever before and they might just surprise one or two of you if we support the team instead of planning ridiculous protests. Blackburn may well be in the bottom three but remember three weeks ago they beat the mancs 3-2 at Old Trafford and got a point at Liverpool, so 7-1 is hopefully a confidence booster.

Jekyll & Dandy Mod, I wont bite your bait, if you pay more attention you'll know by now that my verdict on wenger is very simple and it's never changed. I dont see how he can convince any of you lot: if we win the FA Cup (doubtful) you'll moan it's all about the premiership. if we finish 4th (miraculously) you'll moan spurs finished above us in 3rd. My reasons for accepting wenger does need to go has nothing to do with the blind negativity you lot subscribe to, it's more to do with the fact that he wont or cant be allowed to really change anything (and one day we'll find out (after his departure) just how constrained he was at arsenal); whether or not it coincidentally suited his desire not to drag in the headache of controlling mega-stars (something only fergie has been able to do successfully) is open to debate. if you read my articles and posts, you'll know that i have more issues with our nonchalant players, indecisive board and gazidis, than i do with wenger (my main issue with the man being his inability to berate his players when they're so poor and unwillingness to admit 6 years without a trophy is a disaster at a club like arsenal); other than that, he's the best manager we'll have in a long, long time. there are no 'ins' or 'outs' here; stance has and will remain the same, whether or not we drop more points at sunderland or we maul them 10 - 0

We played well no doubt. Consistency is the key.If we can manage to be consistent for once(that's something we haven't managed in years now),then there's hope for Europe next season. Let's enjoy the moment and hope for the best, even if it doesn't come.

@ CanadaGooner, "in, out, in, out, shake it all about!" I thought you had come over to the dark side! We beat a dreadful Blackburn side that are in even more turmoil than us off the pitch and Wenger is again elevated to godlike status. Quite clearly Wenger's record over the last 6 years highlights that he doesn't have the answers and if he wasn't so arrogant he might find that some of the great unwashed (that's us that haven't worked half a day in football) might at least have some good ideas.

Hang on a minute Canada, you want Wenger out, yet you're trying to take some higher ground here?? Seems like you want it both ways. Don't disparage the anti-Wenger crowd when ultimately you are one of them. A superiority complex is an ugly thing.

i reckon the attendance was about 40,000 today against BBurn. Bburn were so awful even the clumsy athlete called Wallcott looked ok at times and Rosicky actually swaggered. it will be fun watching these 2 V spurs, Milan, Chelsk and LFC. i know where my money lies as to their performance on those days.

you're all so cleverer than wenger and seem to have all the answers dont ya? well, just watched a 7 - 1 display and unlike most fickle folks on here, i still maintain my stance that at the end of this season arsenal should give wenger a very dignifying sending off with thanks (regardless of where we finish in the table). he's a great manager; one of the best english football will ever see, and i dont think arsenal will play better football under any other manager, but we will win more trophies and play less attractive football, which is probably not a bad tradeoff i also maintain what i've been saying for months; it's not always about the manager; our players (non exempt) havent stood up to be counted this seasonand it's nothing to do with the formation (just lack of commitment and poor concentration) to end on a good note though: i am now a true beleiver of the Ox, the lad is simply outstanding and if he can keep his focus, could become a legend at arsenal and win quite a few trophies. if only arsenal can stay focused, the FA cup isnt out of reach this season.

Interesting times for those of you who have never experienced this as an Arsenal supporter and there is at least one generation in this bracket - 7th Place. Yes, unfortunately to the uninitiated, supporting a team means that you actually still have to align yourself with them even though there are now SEVERAL teams are actually playing much better then us. Complain, moan and groan and point fingers at players, management boards etc but get behind the team. Matchday comes and my support for the team is there and dissappointment comes with the territory (a lot more consistantly than what I have been used to in recent years). The whole game has changed - sustainable models have come about as a result of the PLAYERS expecting and getting ludacris wages - Theo wants K85 000 a week - he will get it either from us or from another club. That will be a very average wage for and international player. - that is what everybody is missing here - it is the players that are killing the game - name the last player who was as loyal to Arsenal as I am as a supporter. Players are out for money.....end of story. Like the food industry, these days its all about fast food, getting a product out quickly with instananeous results to satisfy the majority. I have accepted this. Since the inception of the EPL, Arsenal are 15th in the nettspending league , Utd 5th. Chelsea and City (already!) at the top. Interestingly, Spurs are 4th and have only achieved one top 4 finish for their trouble. They might have another one this year

As a fan of 40 years I agree with all the comments, but let's get back to basics. Ramsey knackered after 30 games, what, £60K for perhaps two games of footbal a week. Our pub team always plays a good 90 minutes, even after boozing the night before (and a fag at half time). Their play is very basic but we always get plenty of effort, even when several goals down. This Arsenal side are only good for twenty minutes and maybe 5 at the end following substitutions. It seems the top four places are a dream for us with this current management structure, but at least we can give all. And captain RVP ...kick arse!!!

Nice article, really well considered, but with our personel 3-5-2 would be suicide imo. Expecting walnut and gervinho to be wing backs would end in tears. For me, as has been mentioned by others on here, if all your fbs are injured the only way forward is 4-4-2 where your wide players can stay closer to the fb. Not that I would still expect the likes of feo to be able to do a job like that, but it sounds good. It's all wasted words anyway as our idiot of a manager decided 3 years ago how we will play today and there's no scope for change with him.
