What now for Robin Van Persie?

Speculating on a big decision this summer

What now for Robin Van Persie?

RVP – First trophy since 2005!

As the Arsenal forward collected his Player of the Year accolade from fellow professionals, the immediate future concentrates on securing Champions League football for the Gunners next season. In the back of his mind, he'll already be weighing up whether he'll still be an Arsenal player come that time.

It comes as no surprise that Manchester City are sniffing around. They'll shag anything in a short skirt. It leaves a sour taste to learn that Patrick Vieira is once more the focal point of their flirtation with one of our stars, as our former captain was seen in deep conversation with our current one at the NextGen series at Leyton Orient in March.

The Arsenal link between the two makes such conversations as inevitable as they are unwanted. Of course, Vieira and van Persie would talk to each other if they happened to be attending the same event. Of course, Paddy would have told Robin just how many zeros City would put on his pay cheque. Van Persie is entitled to listen to such an offer, and it will not be the only one.

We'll get to whether the Dutchman stays at the club in a moment. For now, let me just say that if Robin does decide the grass is greener elsewhere, I trust him to know it’s greener still away from City (in footballing terms, if not money).

Van Persie is better than Manchester City. He's Barcelona or Real Madrid. He knows that. He also knows that, amongst the previous sales between Emirates and Eastlands, of Clichy, Adebayor, Touré and Nasri lies not one world-class player.

What happens with regards to Robin van Persie this summer is a vital indication as to the direction in which Stan is steering Arsenal Football Club. Selling Robin to any of the clubs mentioned above, a year on from losing Fabgreas and Nasri, would be devastating. Even if we were to reinvest the fee that such a loss would provide, what's the point in doing so if the next wave of players also bloom at Arsenal before being picked off?

A stand has to be made.

After years of injury-plagued seasons, we ought to expect more than just one fine year from van Persie, just as he will now expect to be paid in line with the status he holds. We have to meet those demands, and then some. Paying him won’t be enough. We have to show a real intent in the transfer market to assure Robin that staying with Arsenal means he has a chance of adding team silverware to the individual award he received on Sunday night.

Agree totally Judge Fred. As I was watching the Chelsea wall the same thoughts came across: would our slip sliding Gibbs and Vermellon have withstood the pressure, would a Djour keep his head, would Song, and Ramsey not conceede an own goal. Would our markers have kept thier positions?Outside of RVP who of our players would have taken the one opportunity. From every angle I looked I could not see our defence and midfield having the characrer to hold the fort.As much as I wanted to see the Chavs slammed 0-5 it was not going to happen. They are on a plane above Arsenal. Tactically Wegner would have been incapable of competing with Barcellona and would have been fodder. Although I hate the idea of parking the bus as much as I also dislike the individual personalities in the Chelsea team it is obvious that their club culture ****s on a different plane from Arsenal's. As to RVP leaving or not he should trust his own instincts, Very few players have remained loyal to Arsene Wegner ( wonder why ? ). With or without RVP very little is going to be different next season unless the club develops a ruthless streek.

i think this summer is the biggest by way of transfer dealings our club has had for many years. Bigger than least year even. Because if VP leaves, that is a real damning indictment of our club. To lose Nasri and Fabregas was one thing but to lose VP who is truly a world class player would tell the world that Arsenal are not trophy winners and have no real ambition to do so.

Prediction: no major signings through the Summer despite daily press speculation, but in about mid July AW announces that even with no progress in contract negotiations 'losing RvP would mark Arsenal down as a feeder club. I m confident Robin will sign a new contract for Arsenal.' Two days later RvP leaves for Man City. In late August Arsenal, having failed to score in their opening three league games, lose 0-7 at Stamford Bridge and lie 18th in the table. AW jumps on a plane to France and blows a few million quid on a couple of (very tall) North African strikers from Lille and Metz. Final position at the end of the season: 4th....

Just one thing - he has won two individual achievement awards playing for Arsenal which not many other players get - as a player I am sure these are cherished just as much - I doubt he will ever have a season like this again. The club could probably get 60% more than what he is worth at the moment - what would you as manager do, knowing his history. Sell him or offer K120 000+/week - I know what I would do.

Fozzy's mate - thing is, if the Chavs win the CL then it is the top three only - We still have some work to do to get third spot and without Arteta & Walcott a twist at the end of the season could still happen.

Mandy - I have to laugh at that theory you mention ie 'we can keep him for another year'. Its lunacy if ever Arsenal or any Club did that and let him go for nothing. A business cant run on such stupidity and if nothing else Arsenal are a business first and football Club second. Facts - hes 29. Perenially injured till the last year or so. His value wont get better. Arsenal are into book balancing. Theyre into selling jewells and creating nuggets. No disrespect but when Arsenal hint at allowing a contract to run down, theyre doing it for the more gullible fans to think theyre 'making a stand'. The truth is they'll make an offer, he ll accept or reject. If he rejects hes gone to whoever bids best. Fabregas was a one off. They promised they wouldnt sell to any other than Barcelona (what a bit part, stunted player he now looks though i might add) and the Club were mugs for making the said promise. Like him or not, Arsenal have sold far better players than RVP at their peaks. The Club doesnt suffer for it and wont if they sell him. Its a crap League (rapidly becoming a la liga or even a SPL) and Arsenal would need to be hit by a 9 month duration bird flu and salmonella combined virus not to finish top 4 in it and thats all theyre interested in. Moreover, RVP knows it too!

2 Perspectives - Van Persie shoould go if hes more towards honours than cash as i think he is. He doesnt 'owe' Arsenal. They chose to persevere with him over his 'crocked' years. He ll win nothing major at Arsenal. Arsenals view on the other hand, may well be looking at one full season in 7, optimum value now, hes 29 and not the type or build to play very far past 31 so why spend big on wages when he could all so easily get crocked again? Hes due a spell. I can see both views and hope he does his skills justice and avoids Man City. They have cash, but as a Club hes above them. In the game overall theyre nothing and maybe ever will be.

seven kings - rther then lap of appreciation the last few years have seen a lack of appreciation and rightly so. having been a regular since the early 80s I simply cannot accept that 70% of fsn would rather be in our positions than Chelseas. If that is the case we may as well pack up and go home. It means we show the same pathetic and disgraceful lack of ambition as the denver dough trouserer, old etonian/fart/imbecile and Mr Self sustainable!

When will fans realise we are in the business of finishing top 4 and making massive profits. Its not about winning titles anymore. Its Arsenal PLC profits before trophies.Yet we expect our top players to stay while watching players not as good as them win titles and play in CL finals. We will offer RVP £150k a week knowing City and the two Spanish giants will top that and can offer him a chance to win trophies. Its so bloody obvious. To me Podolski is RVP's replacement.RVP is going get used to it like Vieira Henry and Cesc. The blame will be the board and Wenger. What did you win Robin?Nothing but for 7 years running we made a profit

Mandy - the saying 'you make your own luck' has never been more true than with Chelski's performance last night. Yes they were lucky over both legs but the 100% effort and commitment plus the ability to defend shown by them was commendable. Were you watching Wenger - that is what Arsenal used to be able to do!

If we finish 3rd why would RVP stay?.We are 15 points behind the top 2.We are nowhere close to winning the title. Why do fans think Wenger will sign world class quailty when he hasnt for the last 6 summers. All this bull about if we win the 3rd place trophy he will stay is just stupid. Its the lack of ambition at the club that will make RVP leave. And i can see him joining Cesc at Barca or he can stay and play alongside the likes of Song Ramsey and Gervinho

Agree totally with fozzysmate, the club lack real ambition and that stems from the TOP. We have a board who feed down to those below that not winning is okay, a board who seem to have taken their mantle from idea that winning is not everything! Do me a favour, winning IS everything and always will be. The longer Kronke, Gazidis and PHW stay, the longer our trophy cabinet will not need dusting off.

Fozzy and Mandy - I think you miss the point here. Whether Chelski win the final or they don't, the fact is they show the ambition to reach the 2 cup finals they have. Even the scousers despite squandering 100 million had the ambition to try to catch the top 2 and have stumbled into 2 finals. What most fans complaint is about is the lack of ambition not the actual result. That is evidence by the dross fed from above about the 3rd/4th place trophy.

I think it depends on us finishing third. If we do he may stay If we do not he would be stupid not to move to a club wwhich has champions league football. I do not think it would be sensible for Arsenal to keep him. We tried it with Henry and Fabregas to no great affect. Better sell him soon and reinvest the money. Although knowing our management spending it will be the last thing they so.

Chelski's performance last night was exactly the sort that we are not capable of. 100% concentration defensively (excluding their disgrace of a captain) non-stop midfield running and defensive cover and sharpness up front when the situation demanded. Lucky? Probably, but their effort deserved it. Come on Real or Bayern!!!

RVP's heart must have sank last night when Chelsea reached the CL final.Thats the type of trophy he wants to win.not the 4th place trophy. As long as Wenger is our manager RVP must know we will never win the big prizes. When finishing 4th and just getting to the last 16 in the CL is the height of Wengers ambition. In 20 years time does he want to look back on his career and say he won one FA cup final medal? Dont blame RVP for leaving blame our dopey manager

But fozzy, have you seen the suspension, and possible injury list for Chelsea in the Cl final.....I don't think they will win there. Chelsea's luck will run out, the woodwork only protects you, from,so much. Would rvp want to,compete with villa, higuain, benzema? He may do ok, he might not.. But agree, a win against stoke, and more, guaranteed third and staying out of it all will help

After tonight's Barca display against the Odious Chavs, you can bet your bottom dollar that Percy will be high up on their shopping list. I think that Percy will only stay if we have CL footie next season. But the Odious Chavs are just 90 minutes away from possibly grabbing our CL slot from under our noses. The result of Saturday's match against the Pulis Thugs could easily be the deciding factor on whether Percy stays or goes.

A stand has to be made, and given the choice, wenger will make that stand. We bought rvp for peanuts. I believe if we qualify for the Cl, he will stay anyway, if he chooses not to, we can still keep him another year and prep someone else, as you will recall wenger wanted to do with nasri. If he goes, it is quite clear it will be a decision from the board, judge as you will...

Just watched Chelski doing a job on Barcelona to get to the CLF - ha!- poor old Cesc, cos Barca look like a spent force with no trophys this season, and as I recall couldnt even pay the current wages for one month on at least one occasion last season?. As per usual though we develop a total world class player, offer him a decent deal but fail to retain him cos we wont buy any like minded players who can seriously challenge for trophys. I know of 3 of my friends now actively trying to sell their season tickets for for season already!. See you all at the Norwich game, lets just hope it's not Batmans mates last game???

Almost certain we wont be winning anything next season either (unless we get serious about the Carling & FA Cup - to give our players a taste of winning); so, RVP leaving really isnt anything to lose sleep over. We had him for several years and he finally gave us a full season this year, and got us up from lower half of the table to 3rd (if we hang on to that); so, fair play to him and all the best if he does decide to leave.

Don't be sucked into the hefty profits syndrome - the financial situation at the club is not as healthy as most people think - better than most clubs yes, but it only made a profit last year due to the sales of Nasri and Fabregas - agree that most of the deadwood need to go - if Padolski is coming and RVP renews contract, one can only realistically expect possibly one additional signing

The notion that not selling van Persie will confirm we are not a selling club is madness. The Horse has bolted. I think back in 2006. After the Champions League Final. We allowed Pires, Campbell and Cole to leave on top of the retirement of Bergkamp. The latter we knew was coming but not giving Pires an extra year or two and telling Cole we'd changed our mind and were giving him £50k instead of £55k was a disgrace. Campbell should have been talked round. From this point on we dismantled arguably the greatest Arsenal team ever with the departures of Henry, Gilberto, Toure, Ljungberg all to follow. Some would argue 2005 was the year it fell apart after letting Vieira go but we still made the CL final after he left and had an experienced outfit with some decent youth coming through who could learn from the senior players. Bottom line we've been a selling club since we moved home. Peoples boring answer to that is that we have a stadium to pay for etc etc. But this is not what we were told when we moved. We were told we have moved to a bigger ground to generate big revenues in order to attract the best players in the world. The only players we've bought since 2006 that was a recognised name is Arshavin, Arteta and Mertesacker and the latter two were last minute panic buys

Your right joe he probably is weighing up his options but as i've said before i think he'll stay and that could be guaranteed if the board and manager show the right ambition ( clear out and three or more top signings)and that's most likely what he's waiting to find out or see.If thats not realized and he does go he's certainly better than the city mercenaries and we would hope he has more respect for us and himself than some of our other ex players who have joined them for the money. The viera situation does stink but it was rumored that he was interested in the same role at arsenal and it wasn't offered/blocked and if the rumors were true its a good way of getting one over on the people concerned. I would also like a stand to be made but it has never been made before with our best players so it will hardly be made now as for reinvesting the proceeds well the policy will really have changed for that to happen.Lets hope real intent is shown in the transfer market and RVP can realize his ambitions at arsenal.

Superb article. Congratulations to Robin on adding the Football Writers gong in addition to his PFA award. Samir Nasri cited winning individual awards like those won by Robin as an excuse to leave The Arsenal. I’ll say no more on that matter. Like every other Gooner, I hope he does stay and to an extent he owes us after spending a considerable amount of his time at The Arsenal on the treatment table especially that horse placenta nonsense back in 2009. And like many, I get the feeling that he’s in football to win and not to solely line his own pockets. But at the same time, the club has to show ambition on the pitch. The Arsenal’s history dictates that we should be competing for major honours. After all in England, only Man Utd & Liverpool have a bigger trophy count than us. The board have to recognise this. But seeing as hefty profits is the priority at the club then I can’t see a change of ethos at The Arsenal anytime soon. But I want to be wrong on that. Consistent qualification for the European Cup without any real chance of winning that trophy is not major success. Consistently competing for honours and winning a few of them are and with RVP being captain, being a trophy winning skipper probably appeals to him. Wenger’s remit is to compete for honours, which to an extent has been lost in recent years. Also Wenger’s mentality that players who sign for clubs should be loyal to that club 100% until the clubs get rid is admirable but sadly rare. Top players like RVP would endure long successful careers at big clubs like The Arsenal if all conditions are met. At this moment in time, you can’t say that about The Arsenal or RVP. If he won’t sign a new deal, sell him. Hanging onto him in the hope he will but won’t would almost smack of desperation on our part. But as Carlos mentioned above, The Arsenal do have history of losing its top players and half of the time not great at replacing them either. Fingers crossed we won’t have to put up with another “we he won’t he” saga this summer. Up The Arsenal!

would you blame him for going? more money and more prizes elsewere. why should he put up with this idea where we sell our best player every year, buy a new load of promising players yet not really compete for the big prizes, or play badly when we get to eyes on the prize time, when we are at our wits end with it? it will be hard to keep any good player over the age of 23 at the present time with the game plan the board has given the manager, or is it the manager has given the board . good item by the way

Very accurate assessment of where we are at Joe.If it is just about money & money alone he would be going to Anzhi in Russia they would even dwarf any City offer tax free he is not interested. The only scenarios with regards leaving abroad are Real Madrid or Barcelona i only believe the former will register an interest the later will shy away due to age & injury history. If he leaves Arsenal my take on it Real Madrid will be his destination but on the positive side his family want to stay here very settled. The club are going to offer him a record deal & a massive signing on fee that is common knowledge. What he wants to see is ambition Podolski HAS been signed all the players & staff have been told this & NOT as a replacement for RVP.If AW can give assurances that other top players are being signed he will sign a new deal with us imo very very confident on that.It stems from last summer i only post on this forum but told you all of his meeting with AW it happened AW confirmed it to the press days later & this is the worry of where the deal could break down. The man IS not in any way influnced by his agent young Mr.Dein he will make his own mind up.To the fellow posters out there that believe due to injuries he owes Arsenal something sadly players never factor that into their decisions on new contracts. Some talk we would let him leave on a bosman from within Arsenal but thinking logically would the cash concious board let an asset walk for nothing?

What a player & what a season. RVP has been superb, not only as a striker but also as captain. He has helped to unite the team & remind his team mates what it means to play for The Arsenal. I believe that as long as we get CL next season he will stay because he loves this club. For all of the moans that we have had this season and all the debates about whether top 3 is a good season or not, we should all be thankful that we have witnessed a world class striker playing for us. My personal favourite moment (so far) from our skipper this season has to be the goal against Everton. The occasion, the anniversary and the old players coming on the pitch before the game helped to make this a wonderful day in our history & RVP's wonder goal capped a great day all round. He scores when he wants......

Good post. It does seem possible that RVP might stay.He thrives on being the main man and he's not solely driven by money. The question that intrigues me is how many Arsenal players have moved onto better things; not many. Nasri has spent a lot of time warming the bench and even Cesc is a cog in the Barca machine and was on the bench for most of the euro semi. So while we moan that we keep selling players they rarely come back to haunt us. RVP might like to ponder that question.

    Apr 24, 2012, 12:44 #21531

'A stand has to be made' The same stand we took over Fabregas and Nasri which crippled our pre-season preperation and left us out of the title race by mid-September? It's pretty plain and simple really. Put an offer on the table that the club can afford and that a player of this calibre deserves, if he signs then great, if he doesn't then sell to the highest bidder. No player is bigger than the club and ever will be. It's up to RvP whether he wants to play for us or not. We can't afford the protracted will-he-stay-will-he-go shenanigans of the Fabregas and Nasri transfers.

    Apr 24, 2012, 11:47 #21529

I just cant see him staying. He only has to look at the dross at the club and see if there isnt a massive clearout of the deadwood and i mean massive at least 10 shipped out and top quality brought in we will again be in a fight to finish 4th.There is not a player in the world who would turn down Madrid or Barca

  42. Jekyll

    Apr 24, 2012, 11:11 #21528

I suspect he has peaked this season and won't have another like it, especially with his injury record, however it will be a devastating blow if he goes as it will be symbolic of what AFC have become - a club that develops then sells its best players. And of course, there is no chance of Wenger replacing him with the quality required. £10m of the fee would be spent and the rest banked. And we would have no world class players left at the club. I predict another summer transfer profit and Wenger going into next season saying we're 'stronger'. And on it goes, ad infinitum, until Wenger's luck finally runs out and we finish outside the top 4.

  43. Graham

    Apr 24, 2012, 11:01 #21527

If he wants to achieve anything he will go.Because under Wenger he will be playing in a team struggling to finish top4 every season. If RM or Barca come in for him hes off.A player of RVP's quality deserves to be in a team that challenges and wins titles.

  44. Carlos

    Apr 24, 2012, 10:54 #21526

The club has a history of not being able to hang on to ist best players that goes back at least as far as Liam Brady, so to think that Van Persie will stay is to not really pay attention to what history is telling us. However, I think everyone hopes VanPersie will buck the trend as he is an outstanding striker and will, I am sure, develop into an excellent captain. Remember, big clubs don't sell their best players.

I believe that RvP owes Arsenal FC. Multi-seasons of injury upon injury are not made-up by one outstanding year. We deserve more than that, we need another couple of similar seasons from him. This may not be the foremost thought in RvP's mind but it remains the stand-out fact nonetheless. One thing I do hope for is that either way, this is sorted out before the pre-season starts. I can just envisage him leaving on August 29th and us running around to replace him by getting Perry Groves on loan at 11.59pm on 31st August.

Good post. A stand really needs to be made. But I fear big disappointment. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that boardroom. 150k is the very least they could offer Rvp to stay not to mention splashing out in the transfer window. I just can't see such an ambitious turnaround happening yet...but if it did then...Wow! Robin does owe us but that will mean squat when Real/Barca/Citeh get the cheque book out.

Much as I want RVP to stay I am more concerned with how many quality additions to the squad we are likely to see in the summer. I hope we don't witness the usual saga of rumour upon rumour but ending up with either last minute stop gaps or bargain buys from abroad. As usual we have the makings of a good side but without the boost of at least 3 or even four quality players we will not have enough about us to challenge at the very top. Let's see the Deadwood gone too - please!

I hope Robin stays but if he doesn't then I believe it's important to get in one or two players that can get 10 goals a season each, maybe from wide areas, to spread the goals around rather than just rely on RVP. We all love a lethal hitman especially one that seems like a real gooner but I think, considering how this season has gone, that the team all share the burden. Vermaelen and Arteta have chipped in with some important match winning goals so hopefully Gervinho will have properly acclimatised next season and can contribute maybe 10+ goal. I know that nobody thinks much of Chamakh but when you see the start he made to his Arsenal career you can see that there is talent there but I think he is a confidence player and just didn't believe that he could get a fair crack of the whip once RVP came back from injury. It would be good to have at least 3 proper strikers at the club with maybe one that is good in the air for those occasions when teams park the bus and our midfield run out of ideas. occasionally crossing to heads from the touchline is the best option. Bendtner was also good in the air but Wenger doesn't ever set his teams up to accomodate those type of players so I don't know why he buys them to be honest.

I am more optimistic because as you say Joe he has been injured for the majority of the previous 7 years at the club. Prior to this season he was the subject of the same breaking down gags that are now aptly reserved for Gibbs and Diabolical. On the flip side if it hadn't been for his injuries he may have left already. The clubs naked lack of ambition on the pitch and transfer market has led to a succession of departures NONE of whom have been adequately replaced. I argues with those who said we got good prices for Paddy, Tel, Nasri etc. Kroenke and Usmanov are rich enough and if you don't find a better player or players another 30 million added to clubs 130 million cash reserve figure for the loss of RVP is neither here or there. My pessimistic prediction earlier this season was the usual saga, late departure and podolski as the cut price replacement. I hope I am not right but I am conditioned by 30 years of following the clubs lack of ambition in the transfer market.

I want Robin to stay. I want Arsenal to be successful. I want to get value out of my season ticket. However, it will not be a "disaster" if we sell a player who is towards the end of his career and has just been one most amazing purple patch. Does he have another year like this in him? I think the evidence of the last few games is no (knee jerk? No. Realism which I hope is wrong). I think if he leaves, goodbye and good luck, but it is not a disaster. I hope he stays because he will not be loved anywhere else like he is at the Emirates. But the club will survive and we will still be a top English team.

I do not think RVP will leave unless his family agree to a change of scenery, which, I suspect, would not include Manchester? The worry is, if they are keen on the idea, then no new signings are likely to stop him leaving? However, it might mean higher priority put on who comes in? Have passport, will travel ... Ivan?
