Jack: Watching Euros on TV with the rest of us

Being a 20-year-old with a kid aged nine months old can’t be easy. That is unless your name's Jack Wilshere. He's one of the finest young talents around, has the world at his feet, and is worth every plaudit he has received in his short career thus far. Especially the comparison to the great Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne.

Everything sounds good for this lad, that is unless you chuck in football's greatest twist - a long term injury.

In a season in which he received the accolades Arsenal's Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year, he was also in the PFA Team of the Year, scored his first Arsenal goal, won his first England cap, and became a household name. The next season seemed to be full of hope and promise for Jack Wilshere.

He seemed destined to fill the gap at Arsenal left by Cesc and be part of a midfield trio of Scott Parker and Steven Gerrard that would lead England into Euro 2012. Nothing could stop the rise of England's answer to Xavi… except for a persistent ankle injury which was initially a one-month lay-off and has now become an injury that has ruled him out for the season and the European Championships, much to every Gooner's disappointment.

A few hours after the Wigan defeat, Wenger announced this news and, within minutes, I saw, on several forums, fans jumping for joy that he wouldn't be part of the England team in the summer and that this would mean he'd be ready for the 2012\2013 campaign.

That just doesn't sit right with me. I find it ludicrous that Arsenal fans would be happy that one of our players would be missing out on the chance to represent their country at the Euros. Seeing England play should be a hype the whole country enjoys and, for me, when one of your own is playing in it, it only adds to the occasion. I don't think 'Oh no Jack\Theo are playing; what if they get injured?'

Representing your country is the greatest honour in the world, so for certain fans to be glad Jack will be missing out on that is, dare I say it, selfish. There are just as many fans calling for the rampant Ox to miss out on the Euros because Arsenal don't need any injuries, or because he's too young, as there are those calling for Steve Pearce to select him.

Age should not determine whether you are picked or not, nor should we Arsenal fans be negative towards our own players playing for England. I know we're supposed to follow the stereotype of 'it doesn't matter what club they're from; once they pull on the national shirt they play for England not their club'. Which is entirely true, but you can't even mention how good Bobby Moore was without a West Ham fan almost instinctively saying 'He played for West Ham, you know'. It’s just how proud they are that arguably the greatest English centre-back in history played for their club.

I ask you this question, setting the scene first. England 1: Germany 1, Euro 2012 Final. The clock reads 90 minutes and the fourth official has just held up the board to indicate three minutes added on. Steven Gerrard gets the ball in midfield, looks up, sees Jermaine Defoe in acres of space, looking to be played through on goal, and so is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the other side of the pitch. Who would you rather Gerrard plays through on goal, to score the winning goal?

The huge majority would now be saying Chamberlain. Why? Because we love our Arsenal players. Through all their faults we love them, so instead of some of us being negative towards our own representing England (and their respective countries too), let's embrace it and cheer them on till our throats go dry like we used to do, instead of being fearful they might pick up an injury. What I call for is for us fans to celebrate our players being called up for international duty and not worry about things beyond our control.

I'd love to see Jack playing for England or in the Olympics but not when he is lacking in any sort of match fitness. How can he seriously be considered for Euro 2012 or the Olympics when he has barely played in a match for almost 12 months?

We are giving Stuart Pearce Walcott, Lansbury, Gibbs and Ox - asking for Jack on top of that is called being too greedy. There's a reason behind Wenger's cautiousness about Jack - he needs a full recovery and gradual build up of his form, otherwise he'll turn into "Fragile Diaby 2".

yeah, it might be selfish, but I care about Arsenal most. I'll shout Holland (as I am Dutch) to victory in june and hopefully july. But I would be more happy when Arsenal win the league then Holland winning the Euro's or even the World Cup. The tournaments are a risk of players getting injured. So, if RvP gets injured at the euro's, I'm gutted. When he scores the winner against Germany or whoever, I'm proud. When he scores the winner in the final, I'm even more proud. But I never will be as proud as when he scores us the goals that make us champions of the premier league. I won't be gutted when they miss a tournament. I will be gutted when someone gets injured. Simple as that.

@ Graham Simons, Norf London; spot on sir. I couldn't agree with you anymore. And to answer your question with regards to England, no. I've been to Anfield many times for The Arsenal's visits and with friends up on Merseyside and I never had any problems there. In fact, you’d be surprised into how diverse the spectators are at Anfield. I loathe Tottenham with a passion but the same applies to them too judging by my annual trips to the Lane to watch The Arsenal. I live very close to Millwall and the less said about them the better. I have no love for Chelsea fans either because of how some of them treated that club’s first black player, Paul Canonville back in the 1980s and their support towards their captain and their derogatory songs about Anton Ferdinand tells its own story. Up The Arsenal!

@Nick, well said and something I agree with regarding picking players on reputation, rather than being 'in-form'. I think Sven started that trend when he continually picked Michael Owen, even though he was in poor form with either Liverpool or Newcastle. Going back to the national team, our current one has very little chance of winning anything at all, except maybe the 'Gamblers and Drunks are us Cup' and they would probably blow that as well. For me, International football is a joke, it seems more corrupt than ever with money talking more and more. I shall hardly bother watching the Euros and if it is anything like the last World Cup, it will instantly forgetable.

The question should be irrelavent, if as used to be the case players were picked on form rather than reputation, Jack wouldnt be picked for England or the olympic team , because quite simply he has no form at all at the present time and without a good and injury free pre season, he wont have, its because the likes of Pearce and other incumbents of the top job, have picked players whose reputation outshines their current form, that i have become dissalusioned with England , players used to have to earn a reputation nowadays its foisted on them after a couple of outstanding displays

I care not a jot for our national team. In fact I actually hope Jack is told in no uncertain terms to go home, rest up and prepare for next season's challenge with Arsenal. I love Arsenal and only Arsenal. We have the most diverse fanbase of all clubs in the country. What this has meant is that we are one of the few clubs where non-white fans have felt happy to go and follow their club without fear of the racism that dogs other clubs. I have been to the Arsenal ever since I was a kid in the 1980s and have never experienced racism but with England can my fellow non-white Arsenal fans stay the same? I watched that infamous England/Ireland match with my cousin who's half Irish and the neanderthal England fans in the pub were singing "No surrender to the IRA". During the last World Cup I was wearing my 1986 England shirt and got racially abused by England fans! No, for me, you can keep the Tottenham Hotspur of international football (big in the 1960s but have won bugger all since) - I'm just going to be praying that a) Jack, Kieran and Alex aren't picked and Tomas, Bacary and Robin return without any injuries. The Russians can have Arshavin though.

What a article! Must be a fanatic Arsenal fan. Given the choice of Arsenal winning the Carling Cup or England winning the Euros the vast majority if Gooners would take the Carling Cup, and that applies to the majority of supporters of other clubs. And good on Alex Ferguson who will not let any of his players join their national teams if there is a slight chance it would impact on United. Amd anyway do you really expect Arsenal fans to cheer on the likes of the obnoxious Ashley Cole after his careful and deliberate engineering, along with Narcistic Mourinho,of a transfer to Chelsea? Or John Terry after his disgraceful 'episodes'or Frank Lampard who's hatred of Arsenal is clear everytime we play Chelsea. Nah!Arsenal first over England,Holland etc anytime.

In 1966 the finals of the World Cup competition were played between 16 teams. 6 games. The qualifying competitions were not onerous, and friendly's few and far between. England , Scotland, NI and Wales played for a cup at the end of a season. The European Championships were played on a knockout basis. If a player went to play for his country then yes, it was an honour and not a serious inconvenience. Cut to 2012. Gibraltar are about to get membership of the European Championship thing and we are going to get several weeks during the season when international double headers are played. Until international football is reformed, i.e cut back to 1966 levels of intrusion, Arsenal should be concentrating on negotiating international retirements for their bright young men. Jack plays for us and we pay him. Blokes in blazers who enjoy a ridiculously privileged and discredited position, should not determine what happens to our players. It's quite simple, If you want to play for Arsenal, you don't play for your country. Once we do it, everyone will follow suit, Sir Alex with enthusiasm. Other countries will follow our lead and Mr Platini and Mr Blatter will be presiding over a veterans competition for hopefully slim pickings.

I don't care about international football enough to be bothered who wins but I do enjoy watching the euros and world cup as a neutral, whether it's england, spain, germany or holland. I would certainly never support cashley or racist terry even when they're representing "my" country

Very narrow-minded article. Who are you to tell me I should want Jack or Theo to play for England. Especially as I'm from Northern Ireland and couldn't care less about England's Euro's campaign. I support Arsenal and wants what's best for Arsenal. End of!

Ealing gooner - the emirates cup is OGLs second favourite cup behind the 4th place trophy! As for the article Corey I am afraid you call will fall on deaf ears. We are fleeced year in year out. We are cynically informed players are imminently to return during both transfer windows, eg. RVP, TV5 and Jack the lad, just so the denver dough trouser, PHW and Mr self sustainable don't face pressure to buy replacements. Immediately the window slams shut we are informed a new scan reveals they are actually out for the season and it is pure coincidence we find out on 1 Feb instead of the day before. Do you really think we want said players with no run in to go and play for england get crocked and be forced to swallow the lies again in the summer window, then be told on sept 1st that they are out for 3 weeks which turns into 3 months and the whole cycle starts again? Even worse if that cretin of a manager (legend of a player) pearce is in charge. England will get pummelled as his u21s did in tournament play yet he will speak as if they have lifted the trophy. As a former member of the england supporters club and regular that sort of rewriting of history sickened me, especially when princess Glenda trotted out ****e re engalnds fantastic performance in france 98, when we were eliminated in the 1st competitive game on pens having only scraped past the giants that are tunisia and colombia having lost to rumania. So although a creditable idea in this case no!

@ chrisy boy well said i was going to say something similar but you beat me to it obviously thousands do it and arsenal fans included and thats up to them but to start cheering for the likes of terry cole rooney and a couple of spuds among others doesn't bear thinking about.

Good article but you are out of touch. International football is dying. No-one cares about it anymore. The way clubs are dictated to by international managers is appalling - it won't be too long before the top teams break away from FIFA/UEFA, backed by petro dollars and russian roubles and set up their own money making machine............

We are too quick to build our young players up as great just as we are to knock them down when their form dips as is natural with young players.JW is a promising talent but that is all you can say at present he is still learning his trade & position but being english the hype media goes into full swing. For me like many others Arsenal losing any major game hurts when England lose i just accept it no recriminations.I watched the England v Germany game with friends a couple of years ago & honestly felt little to nothing when they went out deservedly.International football tournaments are a time filler for the summer for me sorry if that isn't patriotic enough for some but looking at the current England team they don't seem that bothered themselves either!

Never been a fan of International football as I do not understand how you can jeer a player in one game at club level then cheer them on at International. I support Arsenal only and don't want Arsenal players getting injured playing for a team I don't support.

I support Arsenal and have never really bothered with International football, although I would enjoy seeing England lift a major trophy in my lifetime (I was in shorts in 1966!). Why should young Jack even be considered for the Euro's or Team GB? He has not taken part in a competitive match since last July and it would be churlish to even consider his being involved. Let him rest and get himself fit for Arsenal - end of!

    Apr 26, 2012, 15:16 #21654

I doubt very much jack missing out on the EC is much to every gooners disappointment certainly not this one and the others i know if he had been fully fit and played the last half dozen games of the season maybe but to go to a major tournament after a season where you haven't played for your club for months due to injury and not fit is just ridiculous and the fact people like stuart pearce can't see this is worrying but why should they care if he were to break down they can just pack him back off to the club for three months rehab for arsenal to get him fit just in time for the next international the same goes for a fully fit player that gets injured just send them back with a note you can keep the crutches. I agree corey there's not one gooner who wouldn't be proud to see one of their players score the winner in a final but at the expense of arsenal ? i'm as patriotic as anybody but give me club over country any day.

England have been a joke side to me for a long time now, built up by the press and with the players believing the hype that they are world beaters. We are still far away from the top sides in world football in terms of skill and creativity and have been for a long time. The only exceptions were 1966 (thank God I am old enough to remember it as I can't see it happening again anytime soon) and 1990 when we were very unlucky to lose in the semis. As for Arsenal players in an England shirt I have to agree with others who have said that they would rather they weren't picked so as to avoid injuries in meaningless friendlies. Arsenal always take preference over England for me.

I’m in agreement with Chrisy Boy; I really don’t care about England. If they win an international tournament, and apart from 1966 in which they hosted they never do, good luck to them. But I won’t be jumping up and down the street if they do. I can’t bring myself to support England because of too many England fans and their Little Englander mentality. In my opinion England fans booing the opposition national anthem which is common place prior to every England senior match is a form of racism and like many who post articles and comments on this site I’m old enough to remember talented black players like John Barnes & Mark Chamberlain (thanks for The Ox Mark!) who were mercilessly booed by their own ‘supporters’ because of the colour of their skin. And as an individual who is black and half Nigerian and half English, I am appalled by it. Having said that, I have no problems with our players being capped by England or any other country as long as it’s secondary. Players at all clubs should do well to remember who pays their wages. I don’t like the notion that our players have to rush themselves for any decent level of fitness to play in an international tournament. However I accept that very few professional footballers play in an international tournament, let alone win one so from their perspective I understand why it means so much to them. Up The Arsenal!

Everyone forgets how often Wilshere passed the ball sideways and backwards last season. He will be the new Ramsey next season. Derided by the crowd for continual sideways and back passes. He Scored 2 goals in about 50 games. Assisted about 5 as well. Don't expect Wilshere to come back next season and be a Lampard type player of scoring 15 goals and assisting 10. It won't happen. This year out is the worst thing that could have happened to Jack. As he has quickly become a world beater and some how improved but not kicking a ball

Here Here "Chrisy Boy", how any one can get behind a team which has Terry, Lampard, Cashley and Rooney in is beyond me and i haven't even mentioned a Spurs palyer yet. Arsenal is our bread and butter to which we put our time and money into week in week out. I'd sooner Arsenal win any thing than England. Think most real football fans would agree, even as far down as the lower Leagues.

If there are comparisons with Gascoigne (ive never seen any)they ought to be revised. Whats JW done to justify it? He s nowehere near the player Gazza became. Typical. A half decent English player emerges whose yet achieved ziltch and all of a sudden hes deemed World class! JW isnt even close. Hes a very promising player and no more (yet). As for playing for England, yes its a great privelige(or should be) apart from young players who might perhaps fall under the spell of the Terrys of the sqaud and others of his like in amongst that motley crew of lumbering journeymen and the fear is they want to replicate him and his like on what they do off the field, plus of course it increases the risk of injury to our own more promising lightweights who are invariably overplayed and ground down by Wenger before joining any international sqaud hence the reluctance by some fans to rejoice in their selection. The other aspect of it is that they turn out like Walcott. It seems hes thought hes long since thought hes 'made it' due to that idiot Eriksson selecting him back in 06. He seems to place more store by what he does for England than what he does for Arsenal in my view. Pretty ironic really as theres a better case for arguing that he shouldnt get near an international sqaud in the first place. I reckon being english, able to stand up and breathe is usually enough to get a player picked for them though.

Would we love to see some more arsenal players injured while on international duty? Who cares if a portion of all our season tickets goes to paying their wages for sitting in the stands and watching the match for 20, 30 or 40 consecutive weeks?

Celebrating our players getting call-ups for International tournaments is to be encouraged. Celebrating our injured players making their comebacks in International tournaments after 10 months out is something completely different. I reserve the right to be totally pissed off by Jack making his comeback in Euro 2012 or even worse, the Olympic Games. Stuart Pearce is a twat.

Yeah, we pay the highest ticket prices in the world and put up with a thread-bare squad with no money spent on decent players just so that we can allow our few quality players to go and get injured playing for their country in meaningless friendlies or over-hyped tournaments.
