Reflections on RVP’s departure

The end of another relationship

I genuinely believed Robin van Persie was one of us. Today (Thursday 16th August) I feel hurt, angry and it’s almost as if my girlfriend has cheated on me. I can’t comprehend how Arseène Wenger must feel.

I thought initially the club was to blame for not taking control of the situation. The board’s lack of honesty is a problem, and has been for some time. Perhaps the club captain was right to question what direction the club was heading in. I felt Robin was asking the question all of the fans were desperate to ask. Whilst Robin’s personal statement was unprofessional, I thought he was just frustrated with the stubborn philosophy of the board. Yes, I bought it.

Since Robin’s move to Man United, it's become apparent that the move was all about money. Why Man United? Arsenal with van Persie is as good as Man United without van Persie. There's no guarantee he will win trophies at Man United, and after eight years at Arsenal, he’s thrown it all back in our faces. Wenger had faith in him, Arsenal stuck by him through injury and he was loved at Arsenal. His dream was to be compared to his idol, Dennis Bergkamp. Well, please allow me to compare: Dennis Bergkamp is a legend and a winner. Robin van Persie is not.

Where does the club go from here? Well, since Robin’s meeting with the board, Arsène knew he had to go this summer. The reason Arsène insisted that he was an Arsenal player and was contracted to Arsenal is because we had to get as much money for him as possible. By declaring the player would leave, his value would drop considerably. Olivier Giroud was signed to replace Robin, and I doubt Arsène will buy any more forwards, though he may invest in other areas of the squad. Alex Song and Theo Walcott can leave if they don’t want to play for the club. I want players to wear the shirt who are desperate to play for our club. Song and Walcott are average players, and we can do much better.

Realistically, we are going to be as good and bad as we were last season. We'll finish the season with something around 70 points. In my opinion, anyone who thinks we can win the title is not being realistic. I can't see our 'top-four' target changing until Financial Fair Play is fully implemented and, even then, there is no guarantee that UEFA will implement it fairly. Hopefully, it will work in our favour and at the same time our commercial revenues will have increased, allowing us to compete. I love how Arsenal operate within their means and how supporters can have their say through the ‘fanshare’ scheme, but if we continue operating in this unique and classy manner, then we are all going to have to be patient. The only way we will be able to compete for titles today is if we sell to a foreign investor, just like Man City and Chelsea did, which is hardly the Arsenal way.

There's no doubt we will get lots of abuse from the Man Utd party. But just think, those 'armchair' fans really have no idea about the politics of football, and the relationship they have with their club is no way near as beautiful or involved as the relationship you or I may have with ours. Ignore them. Players will come and go, but the Arsenal will always be there for us. Nothing will change that.

Seeing RvP leave particularly to a rival club is surely a hard one to swallow but let's cut the guy some slack cause realistically, how many players would have done otherwise if put in his shoes given the whole scenario surrounding the Club on and off the pitch? Not even you! A far better wage and a little more hope of silverware considering his age at the same time. Every ambitious player's dream is to win some major silverware to look back on after retirement coupled with some good money in the bank. Choosing to move to a rival club may have appeared a wrong move but at the time, it was the best option both Club and Player had. In my opinion, he did better than Nasri. Arsenal FC can be faulted a million ways in this but the truth remains that players come & go. RvP can't play for arsenal forever neither will he for manure. Since I can't imagine myself supporting another club, worrying less about players leaving or how the club is run will sure do me some good. After a lot of seasons, this new one comes with a lot more optimism than the pasts. Even if we don't get more than a top four finish in the league (realistically). There's at least some hope of silverware either the FA or Carling. I'm excited about the new arrivals and the point remains we are in a better position than last year with or without RvP. I'm convinced this season will mark a turning point for arsenal positively looking to the future.

"Arsenal with van Persie is as good as Man United without van Persie" Errr... what? Manure beat Arsenal twice last season and finished 19 points ahead of Arsenal so how can you say that?

I am going to talk rough figures now, that to be honest I am I can't be bothered to check as Arsenal have wasted enough of my time, say three years ago we made a £25 million profit, not much in footballing terms - an above average defensive midfielder and five years of his wages - but to be honest that would be cutting things too fine. A year goes by, wage bill stays more or less the same, ticket prices go up, new sponsorship deals are signed, the summer comes we sell players and buy players but make a modest profit - at the end of the year we make circa £25 million in profit, bit queer you think we already had £25 million in the bank. Another year goes by exactly the same scenario and another year the same. This is all a bit queer, why aren't we rolling around in cash? Please someone explain this to me, I would be happy if you could and then I might start going to games again.

Simon Skinner, top analysis from a neutral not burdened by the weight of their Arsenal rose tinted specs, thanks.Daniel jones, players do NOT have a burning desire to play for Arsenal, they are here as a stepping stone to greater things and for the money.FACT.Gazidis said that we let contracts run down TO SAVE MONEY.Well if thats your business model you get what you deserve.RVP doesn't believe in Wenger and neither do i .To all those wishing harm on RVP i do not want to hear you whinging about bad tackles on Arsenal players ever again.Hypocrites the lot of you.If Wenger plays Frimpong against MU he should be hauled up on a disrepute charge .Frimpong has come out and said he will "do" RVP and Arsenal fans think he is a hero.Hypocrites.He belongs nowhere near a football pitch,he is a disgrace to AFC.Arsenal fans keep on blaming the players ,coz Henry,Flamini,Hleb,Adebayor,Clichy,Cesc, Nasri,RVP and Song MUST be wrong,MUSTN'T THEY?

Hopefully he wont fit in with their style of play (as with the Dutch national team) and he will become another 'Berbatov' type flop and a bit part player who will again become injury prone so as to hide his only occasional first team starting appearances. Now piss off, I hope you win **** all.

Fair enough Robin, I'd leave too if I were you. You've seen what's happened when all our other top players have left over recent years. The fans blame the players, and then the board. Poor Arsene, the man who really runs Arsenal Football Club, the only man who has the power to drive the club forward and make players want to stay, is given tea and sympathy to wash down all his excuses. So nothing changes, more trophyless years follow and the fans get the club they deserve.

Wow. Where I do I start with this article? I find it laughable that it is almost was expected that Van Persie would just stay at Arsenal in order to become a 'legend' of the club irrespective of any thoughts he might have on his career! Van Persie has developed into a world class footballer in the last 18 months, and after having spent seven years at Arsenal, yes, some will be quick to point out a lot of those years were blighted by injury, he has decided to leave. Ok, so lets look at the reasons for why he decided to leave Arsenal, which is probably the easiest part of this response. Like I said before, RVP has developed into a world class footballer. World class footballers tend to like to win trophies, something Arsenal have been close to in the past 7 seasons but something that has always eluded them, sometimes embarassingly (I'm thinking of the Carling Cup defeat to the mighty Birmingham). Man United are one of three potential destinations that were touted for RVP, in the end, when Man City and Juventus pulled out, only United were left in for him. I hardly think Van Persie's move to United shows it was all about the money. Allegedly Arsenal were prepared to offer him more money than he is at United now, but you hear a lot of things in the media, most of which arent true so I wont rely on that. In any event, Utd are a team that have won trophies consistently over the past few years, last year was the first time since 2006 they havent won one a single trophy in a season. Arsenal fans only label RVP a traitor because it is easier to make him a scapegoat then to face up to the facts that Arsenal can no longer compete at the top table. Yes, they have a business model which is admirable and they are a example to any club, but in an age of billionaire owners they will always struggle to compete at the very highest level. Van Persie at 29, probably felt this was the best time to secure a move away from Arsenal in order to seek a new challenge, a trophy, or whatever. In fact, who cares why he left? He wanted to leave and he left. Like you said, players come and go but the club will always remain! Arsenal have bought well this summer and will be fine. They will probably do their 'usual' of the last few seasons and finish in the top four but without being title contenders. Until things change financially Arsenal fans will have to accept that. They will probably also have to accept their best players wanting something more, i.e Nasri, Clichy, Adebayor etc etc. By the way, I love how all Man United fans are 'armchair' fans. A pathetic and embarassing generalisation. You have die hard fans and 'armchair' fans at every club, Arsenal is no different. My advice would be to stop sulking, the season is about to start and it represents the beginning of a new chapter with exciting talents like Cazorla, Podolski and Giroud to look forward to seeing. I would like to think I am neutral in this as I am a Leyton Orient fan, before any of you gooners allege I am a United fan.

RVP's fee has been spent already on Giroud & Podolski no one should be suprised he went the timeline goes back to LAST summer not this. One full season in eight & at 29 it suits both parties one for sporting reasons us financially. If he had signed for City or Chelsea the only PL clubs he could have gone to who could have matched he's demands would anyone have felt better about it not me.Not our player anymore with tranfer fees included £65m( aprox 40m wages) invested by Utd over 4 years i don't think we would have wanted to go anywhere near those figures at his age & injury history & for the board no real sell on value at that point. For the owners part it wouldn't register a jot who we sold him to in the USA sides deal to rivals all the time in any sport the difference no direct fee involved £2.75m player sold for £24m is the bottom line for the DDT 'moneyball'alas.

The fans are upset RVP has gone especially to United. But is Kroenke?of course not he just see's the £24m.Thats the problem with Arsenal we are no longer a football club with ambition to win trophies. We are a feeder club to the big boys(the clubs who want to win trophies)and trophy winning doesnt come into it.How has that been allowed to happen? I dont blame RVP for leaving he knows we have no chance of winning the big trophies ie the CL or the Prem.We didnt sell RVP to our rivals Man Utd are not our rvals anymore. Kenny you make a great point, Manchester United are no longer are rivals we are clearly a selling club i.e nasri, fabregas now rvp disgusting we need money quick as i fear we wont get champions league football as i dont see chelsea having a crap season like the one previously and if we don't get champions league football boy that will be something

RVP done his best for us when fit. I liked RVP he was my favourite player, I hate the fact he joined Man U we a'int rivals anymore they still win things on the pitch but they are the Enemy. My hatred is reserved for Kroneke and Co they sold him to Enemy. I will Boo RVP because he should know better than to join the Enemy.

Too soon to be diplomatic, you don't sell to your rivals, Wenger says we had no choice but once again he is looking at it as a business man. When RVP knocks us out of the CL I think the 12 offered by Juve will be proved the better option... Even if he does a Torres this deal proves that we are in a different league to Utd, they've taken our best player, our captain and we did nothing to stop it, it's embarassing... Modric wanted to go last summer and was told no, he stayed - our players want to go they go? And why did Robin only have 1 year left on his contract anyway? We are a joke at the moment, time for a change at top I think...

Don't worry yourself to much about OGL he's not worring about you or the rest of us he feels great and happy with himself he has balanced the books again and with the imminent departure of song and maybe some dross he has again made a profit for the DDT.Your right about the honesty with the same old bulls**t spin season after season just as we're about to lose our best player. He may not be guaranteed a trophy at man u but he has a hell of a better chance than if he would have stayed with us.

RvP's comments were what most of us were thinking. I think he, as well as Cesc, Nasri and now Song have all been frustrated by Wenger's stubborn streak and lack of tactical nous. They are are all fed up. Add this to the board's preoccupation with having a guy in charge who wants to run the club as his own business and you can see that not much is gonna change soon. We can only live in hope. I'm glad I haven't paid the money this year.

Good post Daniel. I have my issues with Wenger as a manager but he gets my sympathy when having to deal with players, most of whom have little concept of loyalty. Van Staple**** has torched his reputation at Arsenal and won't be welcomed back by either the fans or the club.

I believe with the new signings and by getting rid of Song (one of the lazy bastards we need to get out of the club)and replacing him, we are in a strong postion, certainly a lot stronger than last season.

Like you, I feel betrayed. Our great asset is Arsene Wenger. He must feel gutted just now but he is still loyal to the club in spite of it. How can Van Persie compare himself to the legend of Bergcamp or Henry for that matter. They love the club and made it obvious. If he had gone abroad it would have been a loss but to ManU - unforgiveable.

Good piece but surely we already have sold out to a foreign investor? It's just that unlike for Abramovitch and Mansoor who are also in it for ego and prestige, Silent Stan is only in it for profit (just like the Glazers but more long term).

Quality, mate. Very well (and eloquently) said ! However, I'd just like to say a couple of things. Firstly, to put it into perspective, we have sold a player who averaged 13.25 league goals a season over 8 years, albeit with one remarkable season last year, which raised the average to this figure. Otherwise it would have been far less. He was no Thierry Henry, that's for sure. Nor Dennis Bergkamp for that matter. Although, in fairness, he was exciting to watch when he did play. 24 million is a lot for him ! Plus a saving of 6 million a year and a 5 million 'loyalty' bonus had he stayed. Manure are, by all accounts, in a desperate situation robbing Peter to pay Paul with their incredible debts which were acquired in the process of giving the club to some American guys to squeeze money from. I'd rather be in our position, with an eye to the future. We have 2 top drawer forwards we never had last season, a fantastic playmaker just acquired and the prospect of little Jack, a beast of a player, to come back. Our team is improved tremendously, regardless of the fact of his departure. To all of the children and whingers who pop up bleating about why we are not overspending like some and calling for the manager's head, can you go and support the Chavs or Citeh and leave Arsenal fans to support Arsenal? Time to move forward with optimism. I, for one, am looking forward to this season and expect improvements on last season.

He reminds me of one of those fat bloke stories: He was likeable enough, and a nice girl with a reasonable job and home took a fancy to him. He was a bit of a loser, although he had potential. He moved in with her and she took care of him while he decided what he would do with his life; she thought that he was the one and they would always be together. After 7 years of milling about, sponging off his girlfriend and trying to decide what to do with his life, he suddenly got his act together. He lost a lot of weight, got a good job and started to earn more than his girlfriend. He met a new girl at work, who made his girlfriend look very dowdy. So he left his partner of 8 years, giving all the old claptrap of how ‘it’s not you; it’s me...’ And his name? Mr Hohl, Mr A Hohl.

I say if a player wants to leave then he should go there is no point in keeping him if is heart not in it no matter who he is. No player is bigger than the club. RVP had a great last season for us, now we has fans should respect and put this subject to bed. Arsenal forever.
