The Gooner Gems feature in the latest issue of The Gooner showcases VCC Designs who were set up last summer by Arsenal fan Michael Henry with the intention of bringing Arsenal’s rich heritage to life with a range of stylish merchandise and artwork, including the item we have got for our latest competition prize.
We’re launching the competition at the start of an eight day period when we play Liverpool twice in two massive games in league and cup. Possibly our two most famous goals came in matches against scousers – Michael Thomas’s title clincher in May 1989 and Charlie George’s 25-yarder at Wembley in 1971 which secured our first double.
Born and brought up in Islington, Charlie was a boyhood Arsenal fan who stood on the North Bank before he was given the opportunity to live the dream and pull on the famous red and white shirt. There is therefore no better subject for the first of VCC Designs Highbury Icons series.
The image captures Charlie in iconic pose and is an original spray paint on 12” x 10” thin edged canvas. It is a limited edition piece with just 25 individually produced, signed, numbered and named by the artist. A fantastic prize.
To be in with a chance of winning it, email your answer to the following question along with your name and address to [email protected]
How did Charlie celebrate his goal against Liverpool at Wembley in 1971?
(a) He took his shirt off and was promptly booked
(b) He ran around kissing all the Liverpool players
(c) He lay flat on his back on the Wembley turf
(d) He did a series of back-flips and cartwheels
Closing date for entries is 9pm on Sunday 16th February and the winner will be announced in Kevin’s online editorial on this website the following day.
We are also running a competition on Twitter to give away two of VCC Designs bobble hats – the “Wembley” which was inspired by the above game, and “The Invincible” which is as stylish as the team it’s named after. Follow The Gooner and VCC Designs on Twitter for details.
To read more about VCC Designs get the latest issue which will be on sale at Anfield and around the ground before the game against Manchester United on Wednesday – assuming it goes ahead and you can get there despite the tube strike. It’s also available to buy by mail order from our online store.
By the way in case you were wondering, the title of this piece is taken from the lyrics of the fantastic “I Wish I Could Play Like Charlie George” which was a song released in the 70s, albeit during his time with Derby.
