Gooner Issue 241 on sale today

Front Cover

Been rather snowed under last few days, so just a quick mention to create awareness. Please remember that all content in the printed issue - £2.50 from sellers on your approach to the stadium – is exclusive and cannot be read elsewhere (unless you buy the e-edition that is). I will take the liberty of cutting and pasting publisher Mike Francis’ text from the Gooner shop page plugging the issue…

This issue is published at the start of a run of games which have the potential to make or break our season and the front cover reflects this.

Inside, as well as comment about the January transfer window, there is an interview with the Gunners legendary left back and former captain Kenny Sansom by Layth Yousif. Kenny talks about George Graham, David Rocastle and reveals who was the worst player he played with.

Our feature piece this issue highlights ten players who have endeared themselves to individual fans with something they’ve said or done. From Alan Ball’s chat with a fan in the crowd about the birth of his son to Kanu’s celebration with Wiltord at Old Trafford, the moments of endearment vary enormously.

The safe standing debate has been gaining momentum of late and Charlie Ashmore writes about how, whilst it’s inarguable that all-seater stadia have played a significant part in driving violence out of stadia, fans should have the choice of whether to stand or not.

There are also articles about George Armstrong, Per Mertesacker, a response to the article on early leavers in issue 240 and LadyArse writes about how social media has made getting tickets for games that much easier.

All this plus much more besides including Highbury Spy, Mickey Cannon, Anger Management, Inbox, an In the Away End special, North Bank Times and a search for what happened to a young lad photographed with Michael Thomas on the Anfield pitch

Issue 241 of The Gooner can be bought online here. It will also be on sale at the forthcoming homes matches against Bayern Munich and Sunderland.

Wenger got away with it yesterday as the magic of the cup, otherwise known as ex-police sergeant Harold Webb, worked its wonders. The real results that show where we are though were the away one at Liverpool and the home one against stuttering United in the league. Well done to our lads yesterday in Arsene's cobbled together side that managed to get a better result than a first eleven one , even Flappy living up to his name got away with one of his usual flying out and missing the ball on a Liverpool corner antics . Normal service resumed though when Pep's crew strut out on Wednesday night with Giroud, who apparently was too tired to play yesterday , back to lead the line . Unfortunately our main man from yesterday's narrow win ,Howard Webb, will be absent. Liverpool however showed again that they are very much a home side leaving aside Webb's not awarding them a nailed on penalty they still failed to score from open play and were also dodgy again in defence . 4th place in the league behind us in 3rd looks to be the best that Rodger's side can expect to achieve. It's looking like we will will have to beat City eventually to win the Cup,providing that we continue to ride our luck we may do so. This is about as good as it will get with the FAC looking like the most winnable trophy - albeit we are no certs to win it.

Flamini should be the first name on the teamsheet. Without him we look like a house of cards, with him, we look like a team. I thought Liverpool were fantastic and they would have got two more penalties from a proper referee. I greatly enjoyed the close up of his face when Sterling touched him lightly on the chest. He looked like Lady Bracknell being handed a substandard cucumber sandwich. To his credit however he didn't book the player. What a cup tie as our players grafted for a win and scored two excellent goals, one based on strength in the other team's box and the other based on speed and killer punch in the attack. OGL did his best to lose the game, with a weakened team taking the only two players in the team who can shoot straight off the park. Gibbs on was the correct choice however as it stifled any last minute screw ups. Fabianski had a more or less faultless afternoon saving well from Armbiter of Montevideo (who is quite some player) and holding everything (and there were many) shot at him. Sonogo gives us options we didn't know that we had, at least as holding up the ball is concerned. Chamberlain's presence in mind for Podolski's goal makes him another compulsory name on the teamsheet, players who can shoot straight, who actually will shoot and are capable of THINKING are at a premium. A terrifying and thrilling afternoon. Our apparent main obstacles in the way of winning something are OGL (Team selection Banana skins and the desperate latent desire not to win) and whether Flamini can restrain himself from homicide on the pitch. He is brilliant and so were the team.

I don't think I've ever heard such biased unprofessional commentators. They were so willing Liverpool to beat us, what really made me laugh was the fact that Andy Gray didn't even realise Gerrard had been booked, nothing like having your finger on the pulse, still at least his voice is better than Michael Owens, not much consolation there!

We are building..very good mate, made me smile. The cup is our best chance of a trophy this season and judging by the players reactions afterwards they think so too!

We'll done Flappy you and Howard Webb were men of the match.I thought we should have had a penalty as well when sagger kicked the ox.What does Gerrard have to do to get sent off.Still Everton at home is a good enough draw.

Well done Arsenal, important win against a very good Liverpool side. Good performances from Fabianski, Ox, Ozil & Sanogo. Flamini loves a scrap and gives us that extra bite in the middle. Clinical finishes from Ox & Pod. Great move for the 2nd goal. Bring on Everton in the quarter final.

Important that we avoid a draw today as a replay is the last thing we need.

This excellent and interesting publication dropped onto my front doormat yesterday. I haven't consumed it all yet, but then again, I am a slow reader.
