Three Options for Wenger War chest

Three Options for Wenger War chest

Ron Vlaar: He’ll do

After Sunday’s defeat to Swansea City Arsene Wenger effectively ruled his team out of the Premier League race and handed the title to Jose Mourinho. For Arsenal, it would appear, qualification for next year’s Champions League and a decent run in the cup will have to suffice…. again. Gunners fans, however, and the football experts in the media and at Blue Sq, know that a top four finish is nowhere near guaranteed and that if Wenger is to repeat the success of last season he will need to strengthen in January. With a reported £20m war chest at his disposal his first priority must surely be his defence.

Defensive Priority
The team’s recent injury crisis has left Wenger woefully exposed at the back, with Calum Chambers playing far more regularly than the Frenchman would have planned, and Nacho Monreal and Per Mertesacker under no real pressure for their places. With the club likely to be involved in a real scrap, Wenger will need to bring in players who can hit the ground running and make a difference straight away. On this basis I would suggest that signing proven Premier League talent, rather than scouring the European leagues, should be the order of the day and that Wenger could do worse than enquire about these three men.
• Ashley Williams
• Ron Vlaar
• Winston Reid

Williams - Long Shot
Swansea City skipper Williams has been a mainstay at the Liberty Stadium since joining in 2008, but he has been linked with a move to Arsenal in the past. The Wales international, now in his fourth season in the Premier League is one of the most consistent defenders around. He may not be flashy but his no-nonsense style and intelligent positioning could be just what Wenger needs to shore up the defence. Now 30, Williams was recently tied to a long term deal at Swansea so he would not come cheap but he could prove to be invaluable over the next four or five years he could be prised away from South Wales.

Vlaar - Looking for Move
Whilst Williams may prove to be a long-shot, Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar is a far more realistic prospect for Arsenal. Despite the Villains struggling for form, their captain Vlaar has really stood out in recent years and, after two and a half tough seasons with the club, he will be looking to move on to bigger and better things. Having impressed in the 2014 World Cup, the Dutchman is of proven quality and, at 29 years old, has the right blend of experience and longevity to make him a real hit at the Emirates.

Reid - Stalling
At 26, Winston Reid is the youngest of the three options but he still has significant top level experience having appeared at the 2010 World Cup for New Zealand and having become an integral part of West Ham’s defence over the last few seasons. Reid has appeared in every Premier League game so far this season as the Hammers have climbed above the Gunners in the league and he is enjoying another excellent campaign. Reid is out of contract at the end of the season and is reportedly stalling on a new deal, he is clearly looking for a move to a bigger club with European ambitions and would be an ideal signing for Wenger.

Wenger Must Act Soon
Given the results over the last couple of weeks, Wenger must act soon if he is to save the season. Investing heavily in a foreign centre-back might please some sections of fans but they must be realistic and know that, with limited money to spend and a need to make an immediate impact, a signing from within the Premier League would be the best investment. Ashley Williams may be a real long-shot, but Vlaar and Reid look to be up for grabs and Wenger should pull out all the stops to make sure that he signs at least one of them.

Funny how things change - 12 months ago we were desperate for a striker. It seems though that Man Utd may well be in the same market - interesting to see how the defences will match up this weekend

It's not just about what players we have.Arsene could sign John Terry,Sergio Ramos,Mat Hummels,Vincent Company or a 25 year old Tony Adams but they would turn into gibbering nervous wrecks with his idea of defensive organisation.

No doubt the defense needs improving but in the meantime perhaps changing back to the old 4-5-1 system will help. Playing 4-4-4-2 leaves a weak midfield. Wenger should also give Hector Bellerin a good run at RB and put Chambers as CB. Rotate Gibbs with Monreal so he does get crocked. Carzola needs a rest and Ramsey needs reserve league game time to recover his form. Bring on Podolski and Rosicky. If you don't rotate, you lose your squad depth. Alexis is great but after travelling all the way from South America, a week off should help keep him fresh and hungry. Right now the squad seems to be fixed and any Tom,Dick and Harry would know who to expect and be well prepared for in advance.

Obviously it would MG, but there's distinctly less hope of that happening any time soon!

Other than Sol Campbell (who fell into his lap) Wenger has signed many more turkeys such as Silvestre, Stepanovs, Squiddly-Diddly than top-grade centre backs. If only he had an assistant manager who knew the position inside out who could advise him on what is needed....

TJ, or it would have been better off looking at a big strong manager who can coach properly and get the best out of these players.

That's a really good point, Ron. Not having protection as a CB is the ultimate aberration for anyone who plies that position. This article should have looked at tall and strong DMs who will ignore Wenger and keep that slot filled no matter what.

Ryan all credit for taking the time to post a piece but to use that old cliche its a bit like moving the deck chairs on the Titanic, its kind of irrelevant. We could sign the new Franco Barasi and still be awful in defence.

And here we are again, waiting for a mid-season transfer window having failed miserably to strengthen the squad where it was most needed in the summer........ and yet again, we will sign someone on the last day of the transfer window rather than the first. However, of your three examples, I'd be happy with Winston Reid, for no other reason than we both played junior football for the same club in New Zealand, the mighty and World Famous Takapuna City AFC. Admittedly, the best part of two decades apart, but hey, it's my tenuous link and I'm sticking to it.

We will recruit a centre back who is injured and wont play until April.

A big club with European ambitions? who would they be then. It doesn't matter who he brings in it wouldn't make any difference if their not coached properly he'd only ruin them.

Ryan - as a subject it is not really worth debating. Whilst it would be good to see the defensive players Wenger should have bought in the summer at least arrive in January, the gung-ho approach to defending would still be all too evident. It's the system as much as the personnel that's at fault and the stubborn old fraud will not change that!

    Nov 14, 2014, 11:52 #61344

That's all good but, was it not Wenger that said if it was up to him he would have cancelled the January window!! He's against it but looks like he might need it now!

Sadly, i think any CB will look closely and long at that defence at Arsenal and think twice about joining it. Any Centre half stands to be badly exposed and look a total chump playing in it in my view mate. The problems are fundamental in the teams structure, personnel, strategy and style of defending. One man, however strong wont organise the fragile and haphazard framework in his midst. Its the coach's job and it isn't happening. Vlaar is 29 and he will want to see some success before he wraps it up. Dont be surprised if such players give it a swerve joining Wengers keystone cops.
