Memories of 1978 in the new issue of The Gooner on sale this evening

Spurs 0 Arsenal 5

Front cover of the new issue

The new issue of The Gooner (249) goes on sale this evening outside the stadium before the game against Monaco. The contents include an interview with Jon Sammels, pieces on Charlie Nicholas, Per Mertesacker and articles on Arsenal’s Champions League chances, the transfer window and anti-social kick-off times amongst many more.

The special feature this issue is entitled ‘Goals, Goals, Goals’. It’s writers’ memories of matches in which Arsenal netted at least five times, originally inspired by the recent trouncing of Aston Villa. We had a couple of ‘double entries’ for particular games, so we will run them this week on the website as a trailer for the issue.

The first is by Chris Cann, about a particular visit to White Hart Lane near the end of 1978 (which two other writers give personal accounts of in the issue itself)…

Tottenham 0 Arsenal 5
Division 1
23rd December 1978

Spurs had returned to the top flight after a year in Division Two, and had signed Argentines Ardiles and Villa in the summer which, at the time, was considered a very odd thing to do.

I went to this match with my (still) best mate John (a Spurs fan). We paid at the turnstile and walked around the ground to get to his usual position. There was no real segregation in those days and there was plenty of fighting in the ground so it was important to know where to stand if you didn’t want to get involved.

The match was memorable for me for 3 reasons:
1. A fantastic performance by Liam Brady, capped by a sublime goal, which they still show in the pre-match build up at Arsenal on the electronic screens.
2. An Alan Sunderland hat-trick.
3. Spurs fans leaving in droves after the fifth goal went in with my mate John sharing the stand with a handful of deliriously happy Arsenal fans at the final whistle.

That match was perfect with a Sunderland goal in the first minute, a two goal lead just before half-time, further goals just after the hour and a late goal as the icing on the cake. The result is still Arsenal's biggest post-war triumph at White Hart Lane.

For those of you that have the time – you can indulge in the highlights of the game on YouTube.

The new issue of The Gooner costs £2.50 and is available on your approach to the stadium from our sellers before the game, and on selected routes when you make your exit afterwards.

A special thanks to Nadia Render for typing up the transcript of the interview with Jon Sammels for the issue. Nadia offers a freelance writer, typist and secretary service. Twitter@NadsNorfolk.

Great game - my first NLD at the Lane: a good one to pick.. Got a little bit tense post match as the bricks and bottles were flying. The good old days!

Probably not Westie lad. He should resign now and shouldn't need sacking mate in my view. We could run with the backroom until the Summer.A new burst of freshness and vigour given to the Club and hell, we could even go to OT without Wengers defeatist attitude and win there. I know what you mean re a goal in 2nd leg but Monaco have players who arent daft and naive like Arsenal. Its hugely unlikely. Had it have been 2-1, yes maybe, but at 3-1? Lets be honest too, Arsenal arent a roll the sleeves up and lets gives em hell fire and go for broke team/club. The Clubs a sulk factory led by King Le sulk. Always been the same. We ran with a temporary back room team in charge running the gaff and did well for months while we waited for Lord Wenger to grace us with his presence back in 96, though we had players with character then admittedly didn't we. Wenger could restore some of his own credibility by resigning. 8 Mill pa wont let him though will it.

Seven Kings - Wenger knew the whole story if you read his programme notes. So why did we still adopt the gung-ho approach?

Gaz - So much for both of us thinking Arsenal may actually do something this season in the CL. More fool us I suppose and we really should have known better. Perhaps we thought lady luck was smiling on us because we draw Monaco after having failed to top our group yet again. Trouble is you need more than luck at this level. We haven't even got the excuse of playing a real heavyweight this time - this was Monaco FFS.

A message for anyone who still backs Wenger - - - you need carrying off to the funny farm!! Every season the same rubbish happens from February onwards but so many people lap it up. I hate what is happening to my Club!

@Ron Skybet have reacted in slashing the price on Wenger to be the next manager to leave his post to 20/1, he's still 50/1, 66/1 & 80/1 with others. We both know that nothing will happen before the summer at the earliest. An early Arsenal goal in Monaco and the dynamic of the tie changes again. It's a funny ole game Saint!

Two things amazed me last night listening to 5 Live after the game. 1. The point was made that Monaco can't be any good because they only scored 4 goals in the group stages, did n't anyone think that qualifying by only scoring 4 goals meant they had a very good defence with a good tactical coach. Then some kindly soul rung up telling us that the demand for Wenger head always happens every time we lose a game and we should stick with him because the difference between Arsenal now and 5 years ago is - wait for it, "we now have world class players" It was then that I spat out my Horlicks and fell about laughing! Why oh why did n't somebody ring up and ask the "kindly soul" to name them! The major problem with out team is that apart from a complete lack of tactical awareness and a natural leader on the pitch we do not have world class players in the key positions - GK, CB, CM, & centre forward. If I am wrong perhaps someone could list our collection of "worldie" players. For myself I am thinking of only one player who comes near to the name world class but to be honest if he is world class why did his previous club let him go?

Two questions: How many times between 1997 and 2006 did you watch Arsenal play and marvel at the power, grace and beauty of what you were watching? How many times between 2007 and 2015 have you watched Arsenal and let forth a stream of uncontrolled expletives at the horror show unfolding before your eyes? Perhaps we should start a list...Bradford, Blackburn (twice), Birmingham (three times), Tottenham (4-4 + others), Anderlecht (3-3), Newcastle (4-4), B Dortmund (1-2), Man Utd (8-2), Liverpool (5-1), Chelsea (6-0), Man City (6-3), Stoke (any away performance).....enough, already!

Westie - what track would that be? The one the Clubs trodden for 8 years or the one where its very average players take PL teams lightly through being riddled with complacency? No thanks. Most sensible supporters have had enough of both and i cant see for the life of me why you refuse to see it. Last night you saw a team that thought they had one foot in the next round. The body language from the 1st minute wreaked of it. Giroud, good tryer though he is, showed you why he scores goals on drab Saturday afternoons in tepid atmospheres against your Sunderlands and v lower division teams in early round FAC matches but never in matches that count. The goal keeper and defenders showed you why all of them need selling once a new Coach comes in. Wellbeck showed you why Van Gaal said he wasnt good enough as a first pick at a Club like Utd. The less said of the middle of the team the better, but you saw that there wasn't one cut out to play pressure games and why a ruthless Coach would probably jettison the lot of them. Wenger showed you why so many want him gone. The only team that 'owes'AFC fans anything now is Everton who could well put the first of the heavy duty railway sleeper gauge nails into Wengers box. The only people who really owe AFC fans anything are this Board and they should do the honourable thing for the first time ever today and sack Arsene Wenger.

How bad is per, he is so slow, he makes stepanov look like usain bolt. Suicidal defending- the fault must lie with the manager and his assistant manager. This is not a one off. If the players do not turn up, it's down to the management team to get them mentally right. Wenger has never prepared his teams- he just says go out and play. That is not worth 8 million a year. We need someone who will plan to set out our team meticulously in view of the opposition they are playing. Football is a game of chess at top level, wenger is a tiddly winks expert.

Martyn, I like your choice of replacements for the Everton game but the major one for me is Gabriel for BFG. Unacceptable, feeble & suicidal are fairly accurate descriptions for last nights inept showing. Although he missed a hatful I'd have stuck with Giroud as at least he keeps getting in there having a go. His open goal miss was a shocker with his weaker right foot. On another night he could have bagged a couple of goals. Welbeck hitting Theo with an open goal gaping summed up our night didn't it? Even Messi couldn't put his penalty rebound into an empty net - it happens! The Ox was the only player fit to wear the Arsenal shirt and it was cruel on him that his mistake led to the killer 3rd goal. We so need his drive from midfield. The old failing of going gung-ho to get the equalizer did for us again as it was so unnecessary with another leg still to play. My only saving grace was backing Monaco to qualify for 1/4 finals at 5/2 & in the belief they'd get a draw. They are now 1/7 to qualify, with AFC at 6/1. So I've also backed Arsenal to guarantee a profit on the tie whatever the outcome. Strangely, Arsenal are 6/5 to win the 2nd leg with Monaco at 2/1. The team owe the fans a far better showing on Sunday to get back on track.

I can't think of one Arsenal player tonight who had a good game. Why did we have to chase the game at 2 1? On Sunday we must drop half of this side to the bench. Bring back Chesny as Ospina is crap, Monreal for Gibbs, Chambers for Bellerin, Gabriel for BFG, Wilshire for Ozil, Walcott for Welbeck, Rosicky for Cazorla and Ox for Alexis. Unfortunately we can't drop the manager!

Oh well, that's Badarse and his magic router off on they're hols together for a good 5 day sojourn i suppose. Im betting Mr nuance is already compiling his empirical evidence as we speak to show that it wasnt really a defeat based on AFCs net spend allowing for tax and VAT as it was affected by the last budget, depending upon how you interpret the said budget allowing for all of the nuances needed to do so combined with the number of straw men that planned it. Westie will be trawling the annals of his archives and the Sporting Life to show comparable embarrassments under GG and completing his thesis of " The effects of untreated fatigue and tiredness in modern football after two games in 5 days". In the meantime Gooner Ron will be playing back the tape to seek to explain that the tactics were dead on but the weather conditions had an effect. Jamie will be dreaming up a new anti WOB song and pretending Monaco were Barca in disguise and thus the match should be null and void as it never really happened, while goonercolesboy is busy wiping the tears off his maths homework book blaming his mother for making him such an emotional little soul.

We appreciate Arsene for the good times in the early years but football has moved on, Arsene has not. You simply cannot give the ball away on that scale and expect to win at CL level. Inept and shocking. Taxi for Wenger.

Ron, he certainly did, and has seen a lot of their pretenders off during his rein, (and fair play to him for that) timmy being the latest, and they really should have been dead and buried and left behind years ago instead of like you say allowed to become relevant again as we saw with the latest result against them and with them popping up on here. Hopefully this is at least one tradition that he doesn't disregard and allow slip and ruin his legacy even further by letting the current pretender do what the others couldn't.

The last time the spuds beat the chavs in the Mickey Cup final they had Juan Day in charge and then their players like Ledley King spent 3 months celebrating it and the spuds nearly ended up being relegated.Juan Day got fired for his efforts and as the parachutist said when his chute failed to open ,so much then for sky diving then ! Why are Spuds coming on here and banging on about what happened a couple of weeks ago ? Does the article not mention at least 5 goals ? Surely the game they should be bringing up is the 5 - 1 at their place in the Carling Cup ? Thick or what ? Or maybe it's such an event for them on the odd occasions they do manage to beat us, that they forget what's gone before ? Blimey, if they beat Chelsea on Sunday, it'll be like they've won the title ( except this time in colour ),

MG - Credit to AW mate, he did make the spuddles an irrelevancy didn't he. Hes now allowed them to become relevant again, to an extent. Their presence is a bit of an illusion though still to this day. Theyre at Evertons level as far as what goes on the pitch is concerned (no disrespect to Everton as they are a far finer Club than the Spuds and their history is far superior). The spuds profile always seems a bit more than what it is due to the London media effect. That could change though with a new stadium, even though its sited at that carbuncle on the earth surface at N17.

On scoring five, it was a pleasure to score the fifth goal against spurs with seconds to go to seal our second 5-2 win on the trot. And then it came to us- the most profound moment, tens of thousands of gooners singing 'we only win five - 2'. Well I left the ground armed with my song and duly broadcast this in the most polite way as I ambled past the spurs away end. To my dismay, a spurs fan took an unbridled umbrage to my little ditty and actually challenged me to a duel. 'cam an then u effin wanker, let's ave it.' I was perplexed at this behaviour. To my mind I was giving him a clue about an 'in-play' bet next time around. His arms and legs flailing all over the place. In fact , it looked like someone was burning his ass with a candle as he came astride me. You get the look guys - strange fella!!

I guess the defeat at the lane of pain recently invokes memories of better times there such as the 5-0 goal thrashing that the spuds received from Brady and co. It was well deserved of course after the arrogant way in which the spuds players ,such as Glenda and Ozzie and their fans, had dismissed our chances against them. Next up we will have an article about the 197I Cup final in which we beat Liverpool , well it was better than our result against them in the 2001 final in Cardiff !

Dear Arsenal Fans - When you are a small team from London, (who have only won the league cup in recent years) beating one the best team's in England only happens every 10 years or so, which is why we release DVDs and talk about on Facebook for months afterwards. Its hard living in your shadow, we don't even have are own blogs, which is we are always on your blogs, just hoping some the greatness will rub off (even Harry Kane is a gonner) maybe one day we'll be considered asyour biggest rival again, until then I'll be watching spurs winning the league in black & white

Anon - theres truth in what you say, but you also know that you would love to have Wengers dismal CL record imprinted one any one or more the battery of Coaches CVs at the spuddodrome as opposed to it being on his. The Spurs quite rightly celebrate their euro wins just as they might, but in euro terms in footie today, nobody's heard of Tottenham. AW has at least given AFC a euro profile of sorts.

The Derby win earlier in the month was a great victory and a week later on Facebook the official website was still reminding Spurs fans about it which is understandable. But yet there were plenty of Arsenal fans on there commenting about how it's in the past blah blah. But yet it's ok for them to remind Spurs fans about the 5-2 win and now this. One rule for Arsenal fans as always.

Oh for Gawd's sake give it a rest,I could never understand the 'big deal' about this win. Did it help us win us the league? No.So what's with the misty eyed remembrance? As posted ,Spurs 2 Arsenal 1 7th February 2015.If it gets Spurs into the top four OK,but if it doesn't then big deal.

Great memories - I was right behind the goal when Chippy scored with that amazing shot. Got pretty ugly after the match if I remember with the WHL thugs none to happy!
