Time to cash in on Theo, Wilshere and Gibbs

If the club is to compete in Europe, a shake-up is required

Time to cash in on Theo, Wilshere and Gibbs

Jack: Injured too often

If the Champions League exits have proved anything it’s that the Premier League exists in an overhyped bubble and that the gap between the top European teams and those in England is getting wider. Wherever Arsenal finish this season, whatever the differing views about Wenger, one thing is certain, we are nowhere near competing for the top honours. Arsenal are no longer a couple of players short of being a really good side. A major overhaul is needed.

On good days the spine of the side is average, on bad days abject. We don’t have a single world class player in any of the crucial positions, keeper, centre back, centre midfield, striker. The side is unbalanced. We have too many small technical players in midfield and are chronically underpowered in this important area. Too many players are injured for long periods and others have not developed. The team is fragile and only seem able to really perform when there is nothing to lose. We are in need of players with a stronger mentality.

It’s suggested that we have around £50m available in the summer window. In today’s money that is one decent player plus wages, so whoever is in charge - and the smart money must be on Wenger remaining - we need to sell players.

A world class keeper is an absolute must. Ask Van Gaal. De Gea is the difference between United challenging for a top 4 slot and languishing in mid-table. A top keeper would have stopped the third Monaco goal and we would be in the hat for the last eight. For some reason Wenger has a block about buying one, and he needs to get over it. We need another quality centre back. Unless Per reinvents himself after a summer break he is on the way down and possibly out. His lack of pace restricts how we play and defend. Right back is covered. Bellerin has come on and with a fit Debuchy we have a decent pair of right backs. Left back is a problem. Gibbs needs to be sold. He’s one of the many injury-prone players. He doesn’t have enough class to be worth persevering with. Nacho is wholehearted and would be a good back up but we need another top left back.

Despite the quality of our midfield individually it is a mess collectively and needs restructuring. Arteta and Flamini need to go. Coquelin has been the find of the season. One of either Jack or Rambo needs to be sold. I would sell Jack not because he is less talented far from it but he’s too much of an injury liability. We have to do something about our chronic injury list. You cannot possibly compete if 4/5 of your best players are out for at least half a season every year.

The Ox is ok and developing. Santi will be 30 but is still performing. Then there is the enigma that is Mesut Ozil. I would dearly like him to do well I love his languid style but I fear he is a player who feels ‘entitled’ - by that I mean he doesn’t believe that you sometimes have to fight for the right to play. If the Boss decides to play him, and he’s too stubborn and proud to acknowledge he may have bought a dud, then you have to build the rest of the midfield around him. Ozil’s lack of fight has to be compensated for somewhere else. Ideally we need two more midfield players. Wally has a season left on his contract. He has not developed as we’d hoped and he’s one of the stalwart’s of the perennially injured club. He should be in his prime but his form and fitness are elusive. Technically he isn’t the best and his game awareness has always been poor. My view is that he needs to be sold. A team with him and Ozil in it is an invitation for slaughter. You can carry one passenger defensively but not two.

Further up it’s average, Alexis aside. I don’t see us buying a Cavani or someone similar. They cost too much for Arsenal but Giroud, whose work ethic I love, is average at best. His goals to games ratio in the CL or top games is dismal. It’s 5 in 16 games in Europe and 5 in 24 against the top sides in cup and league. These are not the stats of world class striker. And at the highest levels you need a world class striker.

If we sold Gibbs, Wally, Jack, got rid of Arteta and Flamini we might raise in the region of £100m plus whatever they are being paid. That gives us £150m minimum to strengthen the team. Will it happen? Arguably what has Wenger got to lose? A more pertinent question might be can he afford not to do it? If he does not then it’s further evidence that the club have settled for yet more mediocrity.

Spot on AJ & NB, selling Jack & Gibbs. Bard, rethink your strategy!

Bard - I hardly threw a wobbly, I reacted like I used when I suddenly found my granny's jack russel was up on my leg yet again - with fleeting, irritated dismissal. Exeter - As is your won't and that on your WOB colleagues, you're ignoring the fact that many fact-based, rational arguments have been put forward to make arguments that I would not necessarily describe as pro-Wenger, but certainly giving a more balanced perspective than many put forward here. It doesn't strengthen your argument to pretend none have been made. Anyway, the truth is I haven't got time or, to be honest, the energy - I need to put that into what i should be writing when I'm hanging around here looking for distraction...

Hilarious reading this stuff. Bard offers up a constructive argument. The AKBS offer up paraphrasing of song lyrics, and think that shows they're in the right. It's like the religious singing hymns. Chris, you're an intelligent guy, why don't you write that proper, wide ranging pro-Wenger article we've all being waiting for? You know, one actually using reason, logic and facts, as opposed to simply saying 'I am right and you're crap'?

Happy to accept that I might have an optimistic view of the amount of money we could rake in but its not that far off if you factor in wages. Even the lowest of the low are on £4/5m a year on a 5 year contract thats £20m plus. Jack and Wally easily £25m each plus Per, Gibbs, Flamini, Rosicky Chez et al. Is that really the crux of the counter argument, that we have to stick with them because we cant sell them for as much money as we would like. The whole point of the debate is about improving the team so we can compete. I agree with Chris Neanderthals need naming and shaming. Sorry I shouldnt mention Chris as he is might have a wobbly and throwing his toys out of the pram. Ken loved your post mate. i wanted the E******* to be called The Temple so we could throw out dissenters and ban them from all posting sites. Btu I have another idea maybe we could name it North Korea which would be the same thing.

Szszesny needs to go. He's a bad apple and if we brought in a genuine #1, Ospina would be a fine backup (not good enough to win a title with). Clearly we would get nowhere near £100m for the players mentioned, more like £35m-£40m

Hello 24601 my old friend, I've come to talk with you again, because a WOB softly creeping, came and weed whilst I was sleeping, and the vision that was planted in my brain, still remains, within the sound of silence. In restless dreams we walked alone, narrow streets of cobblestone. ' Neath the halo of a street lamp, we turned our AFC jacket collar's to the cold and damp. When our eyes were stabbed by the logic of a Dark Moanies view, that split the fan base too, and touched the sound of silence. And in the naked light we saw, ten thousand Moanies, may be more. Moanies talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, people writing posts that WOBs never read, there was no need, to disturb the sound of silence. 'Fools !' said we, you do not know! Silence like a cancer grows. Hear our words that we might teach you! Take our arms that we might reach you! ' But our words like silent raindrops fell, and echoed in the wells of silence. And the WOBs bowed and prayed, to the imaginary heroes they made. And the AKBs flashed out their warning, 'Egg for breakfast in the morningl!' And the WOBs said, 'The words of Hiccup, and the Bard are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls, and whispered in the sound of silence.' 'Don't fret Baddie, next door the AKBs are having a ding dong and raising the roof, oh and hedgehog kebabs are plentiful. Keep the noise down, ha ha!'

Well done bard. You've stirred up a hornet's nest here. The way I look at it, if any of these 3 left today would I be disappointed, gutted or devastated? No. Pretty much indifferent. They ain't the worst we've ever had, and they ain't the best. They ain't in the mould of Denilson/bendtner that I wanted shipped out urgently. You're obviously looking at things through improving the squad so we can challenge. Some of the replies don't offer anything in return. Leave the thinking to the AKB's I say, which is we are on the cusp and will challenge next season, again, just like they've been saying for God knows how many years.

Walcott and Wilshere should go too injury prone and not good enough.Giroud should be replaced by a world class striker he's ok against average team.Arteta Flamini Diaby(remember him) and Rosicky should all be driven to the airport.Rewarding failure with long term contracts means we stay where we are.And of course finally replace our clueless manager.

Twas the day of the long journey into the dark North after a fatiguing trip to Monte Carlo. I'm sitting in the railway station, got a ticket for my destination, hmmm. On a tour of one night stands, my suitcase & guitar in hand & every stop is planned for a Gooner at an Arsenal game. Each town looks the same to me. the movies & the factories, every strangers face reminds me that I long to be homeward bound, I wish I was homeward bound. Home where my musics playing, home where my MOTD is waiting silently for me, silently for me. Turn the volume up John, I can't hear who the 'experts' are castigating. Did you see how that full back left his station, substitute him immediately & sell him if he's English & injury prone, plenty more where he came from. Twas ever thus!

Bard - I thought we had we had re-programmed you and you were now 'nuanced' but clearly not. In fact, recent research on early hominid societies (that'll be Neanderthals and the like to you) has suggested that they were considerably more nuanced than I suspect you to be, based on this article. It's hardly worth an article in reply but the most obvious flaw that other have already seized upon is that you are claiming certain players to be sufficiently below par or injury prone that they should be cashed in upon and then you suggest that the prices they'll fetch are ridiculously high - higher than even I think they'll fetch and I rate those players higher than you! You obviously think you have some special insight into the quality of those players which contrasts sharply with hoe the football world perceives them.

Arteta out as fast as possible. Flaming is slowing down and if we had any other DMs apart from Coquelin I would say let him go with our thanks and good wishes, but we don't, so for now,he's cover. Wiltshire and Walcott are wasting their careers at Arsenal. Let them go. Gibbs is a wonderful player, but again the doctors of death, ie Wenger and medical team, keep him frequently injured. Diaby OUT. Alternatively, if you get rid of Wenger, you could keep the three Englishman, and see if they could progress. Wiltshire needs a strong manager, badly, for disciplinary purposes.

Bard has ignited a heated debate but as someone else has pointed out all players go through bad spells and cop criticism. However, what's chronically, fundamentally and terminally wrong right now is the burnt-out husk of a manager with whom we are still lumbered. I'm sure some will hail him the messiah after we win the FA Cup semi-final but he ain't fooling me or many of the other cute bunnies on this page any more. The old cliche says you can only beat what's in front of you; on the same principle you can only lose due to what's above you and, however you spin it, our 2-0 win at Monaco was another defeat in an endless series of them in Europe. The overhaul starts with the General, Bard, not with the troops on the pitch.

Royally entertained today guys especially the criticisms. I did wonder whether they were on day release as their contributions were the posting equivalent of thumb prints. How do you reconcile the argument that they are too valuable to sell but we wont get any money if we do. Answers on a postcard. I had underestimated how attached some are to the perennially injured and useless. And I did wonder whether they had been taken in by dear old Chris's argument that there is more to it than the score and think we are still in the CL. Upwards and onwards.

Westie - its true that an articulate, well presented orator can persuade people that black is white and wet is dry if only temporarily. Its my view that Wengers eloquence has kept him in a job for so long when many Coach's of lesser intelligence wouldn't have been able to save their skins. A lot of our fans have bought his message and swallowed it hook line and sinker just as the SKY crew beguile their audience. Some of the pro Wenger mantras we read on here are posts that appear like they've been hypnotized by him to be honest.

@Gaz Granted the majority of experienced match day attendees can make up their own minds but can we say the same for the younger generation(s) that have only known SKY brainwashing? Any articulate speaker on TV comes over as the font of all knowledge. Sadly, many hang on to their every word. Easiest job in the world is to analyse something that has just occurred especially with cameras positioned to pick up every angle. The pundits are encouraged to be controversial but I feel they go over the top with their criticisms. why do we need walcott when we have Alexis ? why do we need Jack when we have ozil, ramsay, coquelin, cazorla and hopefully another DM ? too many injuries, too many poor performances and too high wages for them to sit on the bench or the treatment table for six months a year in between swanning off for England. the idiot in charge won't flog them though, due to his precious 'youth project' that has hamstrung the team for nine years now - just like he didn't sell denilson, bendtner, djourou, diaby, eboue etc until they had sat around for 7-8 years on 55 grand a week each. a 143 mullion quid in wages and bonuses he wasted on those five. which just also shows the 'stadium' finances argument is utter bull**** too. Gibbs i'd keep - under a proper manager that coaches, he like Jenkinson (now getting proper coaching at West Ham) could be a better player.

Mediocrity is a relative term. Fighting for 4th each season is mediocre for a club the size Arsenal have become. For Spurs it would be a sort of success. 'The Top 4' itself is a Sky fuelled modern fabrication, used as the barometer of success by those who have been brainwashed by the mischievous media, selling you a pup.

"The Pundits"....you gotta laugh. I fully understand part of their job is to get people talking but let's look at them and their careers: BBC: Kevin Kilbane (nonentity ex-Sunderland player) Robbie Savage (niggly wind-up merchant) Garth Crooks (one good year at Stoke back in the 1970s) Matt Holland (journeyman midfielder - hey he did score a goal at the '02 WC though) Martin Keown (midfield destroyer) Danny Mills (narky ball winner). I'm afraid SKY, for all their many sins, have the better people - the Nevilles and Henry. Even Souness can be quite articulate. But you can't say that for Carragher (how is he so revered I'll never know, he was a carthorse of a player) and Jaiiiiime Redknapp, another journeyman plodder.

Smithy - the nurtering and easing into 1st teams of young players doesn't sit well with the celebrity ridden, TV dominated circus mentality that is the PL mate. The TV want big cash splash players, they dont want young unknowns lining up their precious 'big 5' with their 'super sundays '. They couldnt hype the PL up if they did. Creating and trying young players is now the preserve of the middle range/lower Clubs for the big 5 to snap up when they think theyre ready. Most of the fans too of those Clubs want 'big' signings, they dont want to give greenhorns the time to develop any more than the Coach s have the time to try them.I agree with you. The players are out there, but joining those Clubs isnt a good idea. Most end up leaving without more than a couple of games off the benches. Its pathetic. Maybe the likes of Gibbs and Wilshere would have been better served at smaller Clubs?

What is the point of getting shut of injury prone inconsistent always needing time(yawn) players when we will still be stuck with the clown that we have for a manager>? Apart from a major syrup wearing porno moustached major shareholder only interested in making cash and having his henchmen doing mind numbing inane attempts at PR spin>? Wenger signs the players and there is still no sign that he actually knows what he is doing with dodgy GK's and defenders and an over - kill number of garden gnome lightweight technical type midfield players struggling to find a system of play that will allow them to challenge for top honours in the Prem and in Europe. Wenger needs to go and a new man brought in to sort out the mess that Wenger leaves behind him...... I had to smile at the just one point behind City claims to justify Wenger's ineptness .Is this the same City that their manager admits needs a major culling in the summer ? The same one that Burnley beat last weekend and who, but for the heroics of Joe Hart, would have suffered a cricket score beating against Messi and co the the other night ,surely not ! Never mind how many points we are behind stuttering in free-fall City, the questions are how did we get on against Monaco and how many points are we ahead of Southampton..... ? A shake up's required alright but that would only be the start, a major overall and or a complete gutting and has been for years and is becoming even more evident as every season passes, and we all know where the biggest gutting of all needs to start. Then we can start with the wally's and the smoking joe's sick notes and second raters, my god how long have we been calling for a decent keeper only to be lumbered with second or third rate dross (a sack able offence on it's own along with the many others)and TOF's not going to get over it and change now that would be admitting he was wrong and that would never do. SKG, if optimism is delusion, then Jamerson is very optimistic indeed. But I actually find his perspective rather negative and self-defeating. There's no thought process there: He just takes whatever Wenger says, ramps up the hyperbole and thinks it makes him a super-fan. Apart from being full of insults and prejudice, his views are representative of the type that help keep the club stuck. 'Everything is great, we're the best' is primary school stuff. What he says doesn't stand up to a moment's consideration: "If it wasn't for the burn out of the WC" Did other clubs not have players at the WC? "Our defence is probably as sound as ever" ...need I say more?

Westie – agree absolutely with your views regarding many pundit ‘experts’ and I frequently do turn the commentary down or even off altogether when watching TV – ITV especially and frequently on Sky where every other sentence has a reference to Manchester United (do they own shares?). But as I say, I do find G Neville a good pundit. Hasn’t non-productive critism been around for some time on TV? Not making excuses for him, but for years wasn’t Hansen famous for his ‘shocking defending’, ‘what was he thinking?’, etc etc. Anyway,

What has Arsenal missed without Ramsey, Theo and Jack W.?The teeam sits in third place, no thanks to them.Imagine where we'd be with two really great players added to the current mix.British they be be, but I can't see any further improvement there.Teams move forward and with a new generation of young players coming on in Europe Arsenal should get in.Add Arteta, Rosicky and the much missed Diaby to the list if we are talking about clearances. I can't see what these players can offer looking forward beyond next year. The injury room will be quieter any how.

Whilst I can't agree with the thrust of this column, it is clear that Wilshere will not give the team a whole season due to injuries and that his smoking antics would not have done him any favours with the manager. I can see him therefore being off-loaded if a sizeable offer comes in. Walcott's last contact discussions seemed to centre around him wanting to play as a central striker. Wenger relented, got him to sign, then put him back on the wing. I read he's demanding £100,000 per week this time but I'm not sure Wenger sees him as a player worth keeping. I expect Walcott to go. As for the rest of the team, there have been good signs this season but it all comes back as to whether Wenger can add real depth to the squad, preferably with players who can last the pace.

It's amazing how anyone that isn't content with what is happening at Arsenal is 'influenced by the media/pundits' as if we haven't got eyes and a brain of our own - unlike those that swallow the propaganda that comes out of Wenger and the Club!!

We have a coach who will not sell these players We need to clean house with the coaches period We lose matches becasue of lack preparation and tactics and above all a plan when wally walnut came on, what was his role and what was is instructions. i am convinced he told nothing , just get and play like kids we need to get rid of wenger

@CGO , Cannot disagree about the Neville bros impressive haul of medals but they should show more humility before ripping players apart from the comfort of the TV studio. For, me they are kill joys squeezing the last vestiges of fun from the game. They are seeking tactical & player perfection & as we know all to well, it simply doesn't exist. The nearest I've seen to it was the great AC Milan team of the 90's. If the Nevilles criteria were met every match would end 0-0. Every cross cleared, every shot blocked, every pass intercepted, every tackle won. They condone dirty players taking a card for the team, hustling the ref to ensure decisions go your way, diving if necessary to win a free kick or penalty. They feed kids an image of football that simply cannot be achieved by ordinary mortals. Dissatisfaction abounds for fans and many who attend a live game for the first time must be disillusioned how many mistakes players actually make during 90 minutes. You may talk a good game Robbie Savage, Jamie Carragher, Jamie Redknapp, Nevilles but there are plenty of us who saw you play live and you weren't all that yourselves on occasions. Switch the sound off on your TV & make up your own minds instead of being brainwashed by the media mouth pieces.

TC - On the values mate, you perhaps underestimate other managers zany views that they could get far better out of the said players. AFC would get 15 - 20 Million for the Wally and also for Wilshere. Its madness. Credit AW though. Hes good at screwing over other Clubs when he sells his dross. Just ask Man C and Barca who he rips off systematically.

Hi Bard - certainly agree that the squad mix is all wrong at the moment. We haven't had a decent 'spine' for ages and a top quality keeper, CB, DM and striker are all required if we are ever to mount a proper challenge. Tend to agree about the sales of Walnut, Wilshire and Gibbs - all are injury prone and have had more than enough time to make their mark with Arsenal. Arteta and Flamini have to go too and replaced by a top quality DM to partner Coquelin. Typical Wenger that Coquelin only came to the fore due to Arteta's long term injury and although I would love to see Arsenal make a real statement of intent, with him at the helm it just isn't going to happen.

Hi Westie - with you on 'punditry' mate. The whole SKY thing shapes views too much. Its wall to wall mischief makes me sick. On the odd time i see it in the pub it makes me glad ive not got it contaminating my house. Dont underestimate views shaped by those of us who see the games though. I know you go and see a few too. Yr right that the hype cranks up the criticisms of players, but we ve seen Wally for 10 yrs nearly and Wilshere for 7 both fail to come close their hype. Both mid 20s. Theyre not going to be different to what they are now. They are what they are and theyre both at the max sell on value. Agree on defenders too mate, but sadly in my view a back line of Moore Baresi Maldini and Fachetti with Banks behind them wdt defend well under Wenger.

Westie – am pretty sure Gary Neville spent his entire career at one club while Phil Neville spent his at two and both frequently as captain. Hardly Journeymen and as painful for a Gooner to admit, both have a medal haul other professionals would kill for. For what it’s worth, I quite like Gary Neville as a pundit. I find him insightful, non-partisan and rather respectful to the viewer. I agree, like many I guess, that a quality team requires a solid GK, defence and rigid spine.

Agree with the Maths Teacher but I would go much lower: Jack £15 max - its not a secret he has lots of injuries, Wally - £10m max - he only has a year to go and he's hardly showing anything for that money so I could easily see that being a lot lower, Gibbs £5m max. So to think this will generate £100m is way off even with wages saving a couple of million.

    Mar 20, 2015, 9:35 #68941

"If we sold Gibbs, Wally, Jack, got rid of Arteta and Flamini we might raise in the region of £100m" - er, I don't think so. do the math ... Jack, may be £25m, Wally £20m tops and Gibbs no more than £10m - and even those are toppy numbers.

Over the course of a season EVERY Arsenal player gets slagged off to varying degrees. A lot of the criticism stems from ex-player pundits who analyse every 'mistake' to the nth degree. These guys need reigning in as they are the biggest cause of unrest among fans. They are no longer fit for purpose. Listening to the Neville brothers analysis of a game is enough to turn anybody off football. There is more to the game than viewed through the eyes of two journeyman full backs. Whoever is moved out & replaced there is no guarantee the next crop won't also suffer from injuries, suspensions, fatigue, loss of form, loss of confidence. I would be amazed if Arsenal ever sold Wilshere & Gibbs, less so with Theo because of his wage demands. Yes, I agree it would be great if we could sign a top notch GK & DM. Schneiderlin looks the most likely signing if press reports can be believed. I don't believe we'll be signing a striker as Giroud & Welbeck are still improving. Our summer budget needs to be spent on defenders, not attackers. The one stat that made me smile in this seasons ECL is that Sanogo has scored more Champions League goals that Costa. Ha, bloody ha!

I liked this post because it makes you think about where our club is and where it is going. The AKB & AMG discussion was over long ago for me because Arsene will leave when he decides and not before and as he has such a hold on the club who can blame him for doing things at his pace. A wholesale clear out never really works unless somebody new is coming in with a definite plan and strategy for the future, that future should be a minimum of 5 years and should involve a much more serious approach regarding moving the club towards being a world footballing power rather than a brand name. I believe in meticulous coaching with a strong emphasis on not conceding goals, so yes I would agree on a world class keeper, centre back and would prefer our full backs to be less adventurous. You cannot make these changes under the present set up, I believe if we bought the world's best eleven players, we would still, due to our style of play, end up 3rd or second at best in the PL and we may progress to the last eight in the CL. Real and defining change needs a man on the board who understands winning at the highest level and a complete change of coaching staff and a manager who would wield the same power as Wenger but would insist on a top to bottom overhaul of the club. I don't think it would be pretty to start with but 3 or 4 years down the line with the right man would could once again become a mean counterattacking force that would only need a couple of chances to win a game - bit like we were under Wenger in the early years when George Graham's defensive influence was still deep rooted in the team.

Can’t really disagree that some kind of overhaul isn’t necessary – from the top down. Arguments that it’s not too bad finishing 4th (or 3rd – Wow!) in a domestic league of teams that crash out of Euro competitions when faced by quality are pretty weak.

Do you think this is football manager? Sell and buy players as you wish. Walcott has been out for a year, maybe coz uve never played sports before, you dont realize it takes time to get back to your best. gibbs and wilshere aswell? Your funny

I would tend to focus on creating spaces in the squad by releasing Podolski, Sanogo and Rosicky. If we can bring in two central midfielders that have height and defensive nous around the 24-26 year old mark I would consider releasing both Arteta and Flamini. If not I would keep them both for another season. But as for Walcott, Wilshere and Gibbs I would want to see them playing for Arsenal for many more seasons yet. COYG!

Good comments. Certainly Wally and Wilsh. Theres some daft money to be had from their sales. Liverpool have long been a candidate to spend silly cash on Walcott (the mugs, but dont tell them hes rubbish!)Its a hard call to imagine who would take a punt on Wilshere right now. His public image is poor, he barely plays and when he does, hes like a demented bull in a china shop. Truthfully, theres not a player in the entire squad that doesn't have his selling price. A rebuild there is a big job. As you say, we re stuck with Wenger barring a surprise. Hes not going to start a big overhaul and ship out the perennial crocks now. A good starter for change though might be to buy them some proper football kits and especially some decent shirts instead of those effeminate tight ones. Im just surprised a few of the candy boys in that squad havent worm them with hold ups and high heels.

Stop being a twat. Get rid of 3 English players ? Major overhaul ? its the English football culture which holds us back not this tripe you've written. We need a winter break and we need a media and general appreciation of tactical players rather than blood and Thunder neanderthals. You can't win in Europe with tired or naive players,
