The argument to team Schneiderlin up with Le Coq

Stats show Gunners could be formidable with this pairing

The argument to team Schneiderlin up with Le Coq

The return of Francis Coquelin reversed what was beginning to look like a downhill season for Arsenal. Not only did the Laval born midfielder make the position his own, he rejuvenated Le Prof’s shieldless Arsenal. If you give any truck to Theo Walcott’s words to the media recently that, “Arsenal have been the best team in Europe this year,” then Coquelin deserves a lot of credit for that.

Southampton had a big selling spree last summer: Lallana, Lovren, Shaw, Chambers to the Gunners, etc , it looked like the final nail in the coffin would be the departure of Morgan Schneiderlin. But the South Coast club managed to keep their cog. This happened amidst rumours of Schneiderlin following his previous boss to Tottenham or neighbours Arsenal. Credit goes to Koeman and Co for performing so well and giving the big four a run for their money. And Schneiderlin, their commander-in-chief, has taken his game to another level.

Les Reed, Southampton chief told the media recently that “Morgan Schneiderlin will not go to Arsenal”. This clearly shows the Saints are in a tight spot akin to last summer. In the last two months ‘Schneiderlin to Arsenal’ has been on the transfer rumour mill and some even say there is a pre-contract agreement. However Wenger and his men are known for running the show behind iron doors and nothing should be presumed about Schneiderlin to the Arsenal. So today I ask ‘is the French International the right card to strengthen Arsenal’s defensive midfield pack’?

If you analyse from the time Coquelin has come into the side, he is the most prolific defensive midfielder in town. Winning 66% of his headed duels, on his own managing to make 11 interceptions on a rough day away at Turf Moor (a record in PL this season), winning 86% of his take-ons et al.

So let’s analyse how Schneiderlin, a French International fares on a variety of fronts

TACKLES
Season 14/15 (26 appearances) – 79/167 Season 13/14 (33 appearances) – 87/183
47% may not look a high percentage in terms of tackles won. But when we consider Coquelin’s 50% success rate then the picture transforms. Schneiderlin is surely set to pass his previous season tackles stats. The stats show progression and the rapid speed at which PL is played. Schneiderlin has constantly spruced up his tackling game to meet the high standards of English football. In his 26 appearances in the PL this season (incl. 2 sub) Schneiderlin has six yellow cards and one red card. It is an integral part of a defensive midfielder’s game… remember Coquelin’s yellow vs Chelsea recently. He has a good discipline level and it also gives light to his calmness and decision-making. Remember that the French dynamo joined the Saints in 2008 (then in Championship) from (now defunct) French side RC Strasbourg. This shows the progress he has made.

TAKE ONS
2014/15 – 16/22 2013/14 – 21/36
Again if you see the improvement is remarkable. Just tells you why the likes of Barcelona and P$G … and Le Prof are interested in him. If you again compare these with Coquelin, Schneiderlin’s stats are on par with the Gunner. To add to his virtuoso presence in the midfield, he also averages pass accuracy of 89%. This would certainly please all the Arsenal way fans. He also has scored four goals this season. And he has scored them at important stages, away to West Ham being the one which shines in my mind. He scored to make it 1-1, then again scored later on to make it 1-2. Saints won that day 1-3.

HEADED DUELS
2014/15 – 43/95 2013/14 - 47/76
At 1.81 m or 5ft 9 inches Schneiderlin adds a mixture of pace and physical attributes to his team. Arsenal have often been accused of being weak at defending set-pieces. His physicality would wipe off some of those physicality woes. He has won almost 50% of his headed duels which is no mean feat when you have the likes of Fuzzy Fellaini, Nagging Costa and so on. Coquelin, in eight less appearances (18) has won 66% of his headed duels. Schneiderlin also takes long free kicks for Southampton which would make Giroud, Per and Bosscielny’s eyes twinkle. You have to say in short free kicks the Gunners have ammunition, but longer and they seem to lack it. Schneiderlin’s average pass length has been also impressive at 19m. Coquelin’s average passing length is a little less at 14m, though he is improving match by match.

VERDICT
A French International at a healthy age of 26 with an eye for playing on Wednesdays regularly is the perfect fit for Wenger & Co. He would add steel to the team and also some much needed experience. "In August, I wanted to progress my career but the club had let too many players go to sell me. Since then, I have had talks with the directors and I want to play at a higher level. It is important, at 25 years old, to finally play in the Champions League. At the end of the season, Southampton can qualify for the Champions League and I can also stay – who knows. But I no longer want to be in front of my TV every Tuesday and Wednesday." Schneiderlin told this to media in April.

He would add solidarity to the team and would be expected to fall into place quickly into the Arsenal setup. A bid of around £25 million should help Arsenal to establish a French ‘DuoShield’. Sign him up!

There you have it then, a cart horse being described as a genius and a gifted genuine grafter, yes grafter, and being classed as world class, it just shows the height of the clubs and some fans ambition/ambitions if players like him are regarded as world class. God help us.

Patrick, good post, personally I don't find it confusing, the issues that have been neglected over the years are criminal, keeper, defence, (and still are) sackable offences on their own, are just two examples, and certainly those positions alone could be classed as nuts and bolts, their not been addressed because of one man who has been to stubborn and just won't be told what to do or pressured into doing it, and continues to do things his way,(and we all know how that turned/turns out, or simply because it's beyond him and he's not good enough and doesn't know how, and it really is as simple as that, and those reasons alone are why he should have been sacked years ago he would have at any other club. Unfortunately there are those who are quite happy with him plodding along like he is/has been season after season quite happy with the bare minimum and are afraid of change. Yes we've had some great times under wenger and that can't be denied and never will but them days are long gone and will never return. Change is needed alright and the sooner the better and like your self i am looking forward to it in fact I can't wait and a lot of us might start thinking about our Arsenal like we used to again.

LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA Giroud. What a genius the man is. Holds up play, takes out defenders from the play, gifted, genuine, grafter. WORLD CLASS. Build the strike force around him and next year is ours.

Thanks Hiccup. Back in the real world, we managed to keep our overall composure despite defending very badly for their goal. At least Wonga managed to avoid taking off Coquelin this evening and ven managed to recognise that Alexis was having a poor game. There has been some progress, but we now need to back it up and reinforce it and I'm afraid that he won't. Well done Walcott for having a shot. A draw was a fair result.

Unutterably inept for an hour but all credit to the team for keeping going. If anyone comes on here and starts rabbiting on about what a good player Giroud is please delete them. He missed 3 good chances to win the game. We need another striker.

Maguiresbridge, I hear you. I find it such a confusing state. Clearly we play th game in a way which is fantastic but the nuts And bolts are neglected. how can he not want to address the issues? On the be hand outstanding on the other neglectful. I'm sure this is why the support are so split. Some see the best, others the worst. We can't help which is our view! My opinion, supporting the arsenal has been a privilege under wenger but that does not mean change should be feared. it's desperately needed and I for one am looking forward to it.

Congrats to the team and manager for a third place finish. No doubt the naysayers will point to the fact that we will have less points than last season with their never ending negativity, but if you google the definition of 'progress' as I am sure the AKB canvassers will be doing, it will show we have made great strides on last season, albeit the decline of Liverpool is the reason. The ten year building to reach this point of success has been worth the wait, and for all those that preached patience during this time, they have been proved unequivocally correct. Sincere apologies for ever doubting you guys. Let's hope for more of the same next season.

We haven't heard many complaints lately of this big conspiracy against Arsenal to stop them winning, the FA, PL, SKY, are certainly giving us plenty of help in our quest to retain top four status even top two at one stage, with plenty of rest with these Sunday and Monday night games, if we end up back in our usual position of fourth they can't be blamed, so I wonder who's fault it'll be.

Boca Juniors have been thrown out of the Copa because their fans sprayed River Plate players with an irritant. Talking of irritants Theo reckons ..... All I can say is well done Palace and if ever a player was given too much media space SG is that person. Football stinks to the high heavens and I hope Koeman and the Southampton team stay put because they are a whole new thing compared to the present cartels. SKY must be wondering how long they can sell such an awful product and talking of cartels the old drug results are coming thick and fast. Now that is fun!

Kudos Amrit for your hardwork, would've made it better if you could suggest few alternates too. Talking about Saints, did we miss Wanyama, I think Arsene was keen on him since Celtic days. Tiote is too aggressive and we need cool heads to deal with Costas and Agueros. Looking forward to the big game today, should play positive as we have a game in hand and we have already won at OT once this season. And we are above them, hooray, COYG

Love how now we're virtually guaranteed top 3 whatever happens tomorrow Le Fraud goes into overdrive with his view of 4th as a nightmare scenario and 3rd being yer actual virtual trophy. Takes me back to those glorious scenes in the St James Park dressing room a couple of years ago, lovely to see the unrestrained joy of achieving the bare minimum again but the players must clearly have been disobeying orders.

Brixham Gooner- A lot of very good points in your post. I particularly liked your focus on the ruthlessness needed if AFC are going to challenge for major honours again. To me the perception of a lack of ruthlessness on Arsenal's part seems to be the main dividing line between them and Chelsea, Man City and Utd. It seems as if the goal of developing players which you had to do in the years following your move to the Emirates has become an end of itself as opposed to a means to an end, namely challenging for titles again. Its as if you cannot mentally shake off the frugality at a time when you are financially secure again. Now that your loan has been almost completely paid off surely it is time to act like champions and start buying proven talent again as opposed to potential. It should also be time to make transfers happen by paying realistic prices based on today's market as opposed to an idealized desire of what the prices should be. Its almost like a miser that has won a lottery windfall but is terrified to spend the money.

Good stuff BrIXHAM G but you left out the elephant/ostrich in the room. The only way most of your proposals would happen would be under a new coach without a Wenger remit. Sherwood is having a bad day at the office but I come back again to Koeman who has done it all in football and in recent interviews still carries a respect for the game and his position in it. Contrast with Wenger when asked this week would he be in for a certain GK and his answer was school-kiddish in it's juvenile surliness. It is obvious such a distant superior attitude trickles down to the players and in most cases has destroyed the fight in them. It would be the greatest irony if he does not get rid of a few this summer for some possible silly money and keep the franchise king happy but knowing his stubborness he will do the opposite as a painful show of declining power.

In 1989-91 we had Mickey Thomas and Kevin Richardson. In 1998 we had Vieira and Petit. Then we had Vieira dn Gilberto. You cannot win the title without having killers in the middle of the park and even if you do not play them together,(and sometimes you should)you have backup when one gets injured in a scrap. Coquelin is a young man and he WILL get injured. Will Wenger work this all out? Not really since he lost the Swansea game by removing a findamental piece of the jigsaw from the field of play. If the specialist in failure can't win second place from this position then we have no hope of winning the league. I'm just about to buy my season tickets. Fingers crossed that Bouldy can talk some sense into a muppet.

I think we need him, but like most posters have said, I doubt we'll strengthen much at all. Unfortunately though, I do see the Manchester clubs getting much better and Chelsea picking up 2/3 top notch players to stay well ahead. Unfortunately that means we'll be trying to scrape 4th again. As much as I love the club, I really hate the leaderships lack of ambition. My final thought is why we aren't trying to sign some quality wide players. We've fail consistently when teams force us to play narrow football through the middle, a common tactic employed against us. Why not sign some players who want to play wide?? (We really don't need more soft attacking central midfielders)

If it ain't broke... Look, this squad has done great work this season. They have made progress (as confirmed by AKB HQ) so deserve the chance to go on and see if they can replicate the same success. We've been deliriously happy to finish 4th for ten years so why tamper with this winning formula. If AKB's are worried about changing a manager as we may fall out the top 4 and go bankrupt, etc, then I use the same philosophy as to why tinker with a team that is delivering us this top 4. The risk of plummeting to a catastrophic 5th place is too great in my opinion. I mean, what's the best we can hope for? Close the gap on Chelsea by a couple of points? Nah, not for me. As you are please, and let's take another look next May.

I liked yr post Brixham. Cant see what all the excitement over this Sterling is though. He is already Wally Mark 2. Id happily let Wally go to Liverpool and drive him there myself but wouldn't want Sterling. Hes another over hyped englishman. Id try and do a deal involving Jordon Ibe, they can keep the rest of the nondescript 3rd rate squad they've accumulated. Ibe has power and pace and ball control. Sterling is another one made at the balsa wood factory from where Wally emerged. Hes not a central striker and nor is he a willing winger. We ve had all this rubbish for 9 years with the Wally. Do we need more? I suspect id he does develop slightly he ll hump Madrids leg before we know it, like a Yorshire terrier on Viagra. Can see yr point on Podolski. Ironically hes the only player in that squad who can shoot hard and straight.Van Gaal was dead on about Wellbeck. Hes a player whos level is West Ham.Reality is that Wengers entire squad could be argued as sellable IF the Club wanted to really challenge. Its my wish that Wenger buys nobody. The Club shouldn't trust him to team build now. Hes only ever been any good at selling players at the right time. His purchases will just be more of the same type of frustrating nearly men. He needs sacking and it needs doing as the whistle blows ending the FAC Final win or lose.

Tony, Brixham good posts and sensible thoughts but it aint going to happen. This is the delusion of every end of season for the last 10 years or more. If only we did a little of this and a little of that we could be right up there. How many seasons have we been saying the same thing. There is all this guff that we have turned a corner. Maybe we have but as always we are still 3 short minimum. Some will say this is the usual wob cynicism but my point is this why would there be a change. There is no need. We have qualified for the CL and we have made shedloads of money. Why spend money on better players and create greater expectations. Far better to keep on creating the myth that we are slowly but surely moving to a position where we can compete. its just that time never comes. You can't fool all the people all of the time.

Good article and very well researched. Im with goonercosyb on this one he would make a great addition. However it presumes several things, one is that we are going to make a serious challenge next year and therefore need to add some quality, secondly we are committed to the notion that we need a world class DM and thirdly that we will spend some serious money. None of those are givens. My view is that we wont buy him and we wont buy another keeper either, why because we always make do and if it can be done on the cheap even better. And critically we have no intention of pushing on for a title challenge.

Brixham Gooner - again you are in tune with my thoughts. Uncle Arsene has to turn into the wicked uncle and give short shrift to the likes of Wally, Diaby and Arteta; and to each and every other player that is either surplus to requirements or spends longer on the treatment table than the pitch. Will he do this though? No of course not.

An interesting post Brixham Gooner but it's also been mooted that Cazorla might possibly return to Spain in the summer. It also seems likely that Walcott might be on his way but if we got Sterling would he fit into our style of play seeing as we don't play to Walcott's strengths at the moment. Also with Welbeck, I like his work rate but he's definately not a striker for up front as his finishing is lacking but his pace and strength still sometimes make things happen when we're struggling. I think he deserves another season to prove himself.

People gave truck to what wally said alright you can be sure of that, and actually believed it. More stats, More analysing, More attributes (we've had enough of those to last a life time mate) and being a French man is certainly an attribute for TOF, but the fans calling for him and wanting him is certainly not, (if you or any other fans want him or anyone else you'd be better calling for him/them not to be signed, as nobody tells OGL what to do or who to sign. And as it's been said before what difference will it make who we sign when we have a manager who can't coach them properly, motivate them properly, play them in their proper positions, get the best out of them, so a Prof in what exactly? it's certainly not any of the above.

This transfer window feels more important than the last two seasons. I see it as absolutely pivotal to the progress of the club but sadly if previous decisions are anything to go by I place my hopes on hold. More than ever before its about who leaves. If the apron strings cannot be cut of certain players we don't have a hope of recruiting the correct replacements. If we are to build on the last two seasons potential does AW have it in him to make those decisions that will be most difficult for him personally to make. Some of the decisions may involve Arsene admitting he may have been right about some of his players. From front to back our squad is littered with question marks over some low and high profile playing staff not to mention whether their contracts represent value for money. It could be these lucrative contracts that may scupper any hope of moving players on such as Szczesny. For me the arrival of Cech would be most welcome. Can anyone see a scenario where Arsenal sell their Captain and Vice-Captain in the same window? Of course not but it would be the right thing to do. Mertersacker has been poor when it mattered and should be phased out. Are Gabriel or Chambers ready? Their combined purchase price was £27m. With Jenkinson surely returning AW must find a way of continuing with the excellent progress of Bellerin (who out of the three right backs is the only one who has the potential to play further forward.) LB for me is fine. In midfield I propose that Flamini, Arteta and Diaby be released. Bielik will emerge next season and possibly Zelalem. This tells me there is definitely room for Scneiderlin and competition for places in deep midfield will be fierce with Scheiderlin, Coquelin, Ramsey, Cazorla, Wilshere, Chambers and Bielik all able to play that role. Only one natural DM will surely play so looks well balanced. Scheiderlin must be bought at all costs to signal ANY kind of ambition. I will take Dungodan (on a free) but with no Premiership experience the money better be spent elsewhere, Arsene. The central creative role will belong to Mezut if hes fit, with Cazorla, Oxlade and Rosicky the understudies here. But it is in the wider two and forward role that the current transfer policy comes under the most scrutiny. That Walcott has not kicked a ball for 18 months speaks volumes about his value to the squad. He will surely be offloaded in exchange for Sterling. Will sentiment stop this from happening as the second longest serving player? Will Arsene admit he was wrong about a player who never really had the touch to propel him to the levels we dreamed of? A £100k plus player he is not. His desire to play, his desire to stay and his desire for money will decide this one. Signs are that RS could be better than a Walcott MK2. I believe that Gnabry will be the one who is “like a new signing” next season with the youngster already having proved two years ago he is no light weight to the Premiership. With Miyaichi and Akpom too far away in their development and not in contention for a place in this first team squad what will happen to The Three Musketeers? Sanogo. Campbell and Podolski anyone? Why sign players who are not good enough to hold down a place? You hear of the embarrassment at Real Madrid at having Chicharito adding to their back up striking options and yet what does Arsenal have? I would sooner see Charlie Austin on our bench. What happens with the loanees is anyones guess but foe me Campbell is the only one who has not had a fair chance. We know what we get from the others. I would have Podolski on the bench but you cant keep a player in their prime who wants to play. His lack of mobility has seen the slow decline of a formidable player once voted Young Player of the 2006 World Cup. He is not that player anymore. The finest example of our questionable transfer policy is the purchase of Welbeck. Pro’s: English, quick, fit, cheap, attitude. Cons: Not aggressive enough. Not creative. Not Clinical. Not good enough to start for Arsenal. Not good enough to start for Liverpool. Will never be prolific. Not really competition for Giroud. I really wouldn’t know what to do with him. Spot the odd one out: Sanchez, Ozil, Wel...well you get the idea. I predict Welbs will be another Walcott. If serious improvement is not observed this season he should be moved on to a club of his level. The time is ripe for an utterly ruthless clear out more so than ever before and for every decision to be based on purely footballing matters. Too many soft decisions made by you, Arsene. Time to stop working with what you have and make it happen. Remember the first rule of change management – If you can’t change the people, change the people. Pity that Stan and Ivan haven’t heard of that one either...PS.And if you’re still listening Arsene show your class and lets have a testimonial for Super Tom Rosicky please...

I think the best we can hope for next season is a better stab at the title. The CL will be well out of reach, especially with the new seeding system in place. Can't really see it though as Wenger will not do the necessary in the summer, and we will still lack that bit of extra quality required to succeed at the very top. Mind you it's not just about quality, it's also the type of player Wenger goes for in spades - small and lightweight that disappear when the going gets tough; with egos bigger than Jamerson's bank balance. We need toughening up big time but that's not the Wenger way and never will be.

I believe that we are now well stocked in the defensive department and don't think that Wenger will upgrade wither keeper. If we do buy then I'd expect it to be another attacking midfielder and possibly a striker but I think that would be about it. As long as Arteta stays then Coquelin and Arteta will be the midfield shield. I think wer could improve on a few of our players but as we are unlikely to be buying from the very top echelons which we are not part of I think Wenger will stick with most of what has served him well in the last few months unless one of the really big clubs are desperate to sell to buy the next galactico and then we have the financial clout to swoop. I don't even think I'll attempt to second-guess what Wenger is likely to do during the summer. Some more beach volleyball perhaps?

Sorry, but you spoilt all that hard work in your penultimate line when you wrote "A bid of around £25 million...". He will probably end up moving for that sum, just not to us. A Wenger bid will more likely be in the £10m region

Chris - Djourou. Another Legend. Do you recall when things were so bad, with him Senderos and Silvestre as Wenger defensive stalwarts! How we used to wince when Djourou fell awkwardly or got tripped for fear his dodgy shoulders would go or get crocked and miss a game? Did we think he was Franco Baresi?? Laughable thinking back wasnt it, but we were so desperate, even for Djourous (and of course his wide eyed, frightened to death panic glare as a forward bore down on him). Reality is that the 2 statues in the middle of the back 4 now arent much better than Djourou on a good day and he never had many did he. Wenger has truly played some top top sh--te in that defence in his time.

Coquelin's form does not reflect well on Arsene because if Arteta was fit,Coquelin would be still running around The Valley in Charltons's colours. But I'm not sure if he is the long term solution for a proper holding midfielder. It would take a monumental effort and character for him to keep, and improve, his current form for the next few years if we are serious about major trophies.I wish him well cause he looks a good bloke and not a 'flash harry'.And don't forget Johann Djourou had a blinding spell of 15/20 games until he got a new contract and then quick as a flash reverted back to a poor man's Gus Caesar.

Really interesting article Amrit. Thanks for taking the time to research it and write it up. I certainly don't agree with what Walcott was quoted as saying about us being the best in Europe. That's laughable, but perhaps the most improved? Before people jump on me, I'm kidding as that should clearly go to Leicester! Despite the stast (which of course AW wil love) I'm not convinced Schneiderlin is good enough for Arsenal, at least not if we're to mount a serious challenge for the top honours. Don't get me wrong, he's clearly a decent enough player, but I think his level is with a team in the second tier of the PL - which is actually where Southampton are, so maybe he doesn't need to move at all. I do agree though that we need a player of his type to work alongside Coquelin or, at times, in place of him to give him a rest. I don't want us to go into next season needing to pray that Le Coq remains fit for the next 9 months because we know that won't happen.

Possible 4 to come in according to Arsenes unproven style of signings - begovic , cavallio ,Austin and shawcross. I can't see him going for obvious names. Out of that four I would say they would all be hungry to play at a higher level but William cavallio or schneidalin is exactly what we need now pogba is beyond our pay rates.

For me a quality defensive midfielder to supplement Coquelin is a must, but with Arteta and Flamini still lurking as cheap options I just don't see one materialising this summer. After all how long have the saner ones amongst us been saying this? I reckon a new keeper is the best we can hope for but even that is far from certain. We may be able to squeak by at CB (especially if Paulista and Chambers prove their worth), and as for upfront - if we really wish to mount a proper challenge we could do with a striker in the mould of a Costa or Aguero. Giroud has improved but look at that Monaco game - that's the difference between success and failure at this level.

I like Schneiderlin and he has a proven record in the Premier League. I agree we need another central midfielder. But I think we should go for Tony Kroos who would increase our quality in midfield significantly. Having just exited the Champions League and likely to finish second in La Liga, Real Madrid are likely to go into one of their regular internal-infighting meltdowns in the early summer. They will probably make a Galactico bid for Pogba. So I think we should help them with their cash-flow by going in for Tony Kroos as soon as the transfer window opens.

The Wally Walcott quote remains even more ludicrous than is the proposition that AFC are going to sign Schneiderlin. Why would Wenger sign a player who would 'kill' Cocqelin? The former seems a decent player and has done well for Saints though as you say. Is he the quality to lift Arsenals bar to the stage of becoming title and CL candidates? No, not in my view. They need a proven type player at that level to go with a Keeper CB and striker as nearly all observers suggest. Schneiderlin isnt it.

Tbh Amrit most sensible folk think that Wally's claims that we were the best team in Europe to be completely bonkers. Even if he meant to say that we were the best of the ENGLISH clubs you then have to take account of who we faced compared with the other Prem sides group stage opponents . We were not in a group with BM and Barcelona in it and still despite having the far easier group of all the Prem sides we still couldn't win it and only just managed to get into the first KO round. Only alas to yet again go out at the first whiff of gun-powder Beaten 3-1 at home to mighty Monaco .Wenger's revenge for them firing him is still on hold. In fact whichever way you look at it Wally's claims that we were the best side in Europe remain bonkers .If he is claiming that we were the best of the means we were the best of the English clubs then he is claiming that we were better than Chelsea who went out to PSG even though they got a draw and were according to Jamerson/leeKFC unbeaten .PSG are in any case a far superior outfit than Monaco are . You have to look at the bigger picture sometimes. Wenger with his gung-ho tactics doesent really like a defensive midfield player in the equation and struggles with his 'conscience' to play one . He has been blamed for taking off le Coq the other night and that this resulted in Swansea scoring. The cross that led to the goal though came from out on the right wing and Swansea only had the one big lad up front on his own with him having two CB's marking him .Our defenders should have done better and also Ospina was slow to react to the danger perhaps foolishly believing that our CB's would deal with the situation. There was a touch of the Harry Kane at the lane deja vu's about the Swansea headed goal. Le Coq has improved things somewhat in midfield but there are other issues up front in defence and in goal that also need resolving. A new manager with less myopic stubborn tunnel view vision and a touch of humility at times wouldn't go amiss either. Onwards on upwards!

An interesting article, and well-researched. I personally feel that it might be problematic adding another DM. Coquelin wants to and should play regularly to keep improving- we are better with a BTB/DM combo (ie Ramsey, Wilshere, Cazorla) given how much we attack. I would say Tiote would be perfect- we can play some games with a great a shield of him and Coquelin, he is older so wouldn't mind being on the bench most of the time and would be a great pro for Coquelin to understudy.
