Gooner Question Time 2015

Progress or not progress? That is ONE of the questions.

Gooner Question Time 2015

The 2015 Gooner Survey is now live. It will probably take you around 10-15 minutes to complete, so if you want to get straight into it click here.

We’ve been running the end of season Gooner Survey every year since 1989 when the only way you could share your views was to tick the boxes with a pen, stick the sheet of paper in an envelope addressed to us, put a stamp on the front and find the nearest postbox. Having spent many hours collating the hundreds of responses we used to receive, I’m very relieved the internet has come along and is able to handle the three thousand or so Gooners who have taken the opportunity to tell us their opinions in each of the last couple of years.

With over 60 questions, The Gooner Survey is as comprehensive an insight into the thoughts of the global Gooner family as you can hope to find. As in previous years, we’re asking the questions which you will no doubt have debated with your friends and colleagues in the pub, in the ground, in workplaces, on internet forums and anywhere else Gooners gather together.

The first section concerns the season which has just finished - from the lows of defeats to Monaco and our North London neighbours to the highs of away wins at Man City and Man United, and becoming the first side to win the FA Cup 12 times. Whilst I’m pretty confident I can predict who will win the Player of the Season, some of the other categories are harder to guess – Goal of the Season for example. Will Jack’s strike against West Brom which Arsenal fans on Twitter was Match of the Day’s Goal of the Season also be viewed as the best Arsenal goal? In case you missed it last week, we discussed some of these categories on the latest Gooner podcast which you can listen to here. Don’t let our views influence your selections though.

We then have a section which gathers your thoughts on how the squad will look next season – who should be buy, who shouldn’t we sell, which youngsters will break into the team, etc.

Next are some general questions regarding your experiences as an Arsenal fan followed by a section on what you think about the majority owner and what goes on in the Boardroom. We will be looking to work with the various Arsenal supporters groups again next season to highlight issues affecting fans and these questions will help shape those discussions, so please take the time to help us to help you.

Finally, we always like to know what you think about us at The Gooner in all our guises. Don’t worry, we’re a thick-skinned lot so can take criticism, but it is your fanzine so if there’s something you feel we should be doing the invitation is always open for you to get involved and make it happen. You can get in touch with us at [email protected] and can submit contributions for the fanzine and website here.

Everyone who completes the survey has the opportunity to be entered into a prize draw by adding their contact details at the end. The top prize will be next seasons replica shirt (home or away) and there will be a number of other prizes available including digital Gooner subscriptions.

The closing date for entries is not until Tuesday 23rd June so you’ve got a bit of time to reflect on the last nine months and other aspects of our club, but if you’re ready to get started, click here.

We’ll post the results of the survey on the website later in the summer.

Clock that picture of Arsene on 'holiday' in Marrakesh with a t-shirt showing faces of famous French Comedians. Could not see Sanogo anywhere on it or Arsene himself who made me think of Thora Hird! Weird. Must be the hair. Bobby Pires is out there too and maybe Thierry is just too busy for suck marlarkies so will Bob be spending even more time at the Emirates/Marrachesh Futbol stadia (geddit!). It's all happening with Jack still toweing over us as we swim in an ocean of eggs. I love eggs and maybe I love to Jack. Now, there once was a bloke called Charlie George who was partial to a tie-die grandad shirt in a street stylee - get me ...

Watched highlights and Jack (not the one lying in the road) looks taller when he plays that well. Second goal was brilliant! Move over WESTIE I'm an AKB for a 'day or so.' Can't remember the stat but er lots of the recent goals for England have come form Arsenal and the Mancs which just goes to show errr England are the new Invincibles. Could not find my prescripts so trying this new/old French supplement and it makes me wanna play errr beachball. Jack - swear away. You've earned it. Bumped into someone today after hearing they are to be kicked out of the club at the annual meeting this evening. They seem to have wind of it as it was a 'dead man walking.' scenario. Football hey! Nottingham Forest of old - great stuff WESTIE/RON. Robertson - the finest of balances. Wasn't hard when you are the real life version of Alfie Tupper ....

Westie - Yes, Wenger would like him for sure. He wasnt an out and out winger though was he. He cd get in central and play like a deep lying CF when he needed to. Strong as an ox and though he was injured a lot at Utd, he was never bullied. Quite happy to use his elbows and arms just like Bergie! Brilliant. Loved him. Best and Moore had some magic moments together. Ha . Kenny Burns. Thug at Bham, though he was a Centre forward there. He was a good player too. Scored a few crackers. He became an undroppable CH at Forest. Him and Larry Lloyd were a fortress. Shilton at the back, Withe up top. Another great Forest spine. A team simply cant win titles without a spine. Fergie and Mourinho knew and know this. Arsene is making himself look a fool thinking he can. The game doesnt change much as some say, its an excuse to say it does. Simple old game and changes are only ever peripheral. Even a purring cat like machine like Barca's always have a steel spine.

@Ron, Can you imagine how good he would be playing in the current Arsenal side as a goal scoring left winger? Made the wrong decision joining the Mancs when he could have teamed up with Brian Clough at Derby. He was head scout at Villa under Martin O'Neill. How would the modern day refs cope with Kenny Burns? He used to eat centre forwards for breakfast.

Wenger question very emotive. He can stay for 2 years if we win something, if we don't, well thank for memories. Concerning a lot of the players contracts also finish in 2017. Ramsey / Wilshire/ Gibbs

There was a real player Westie - Ian Storey Moore, later just Ian Moore as he dropped the middle bit. I lived in Loughboro when he was at Forest and seen him play with Joe Baker at Forest. IM was a delight to see. He d got it all. Went to Utd but Utd were badly in decline by then circa 1972 when Frank O Farrell was buying everybody to try and justify his job after Busby and the failed regime at Utd under McGuinness was upon them. It was a bad move. Makes me laugh when they say footballers are better now then then. Theyre fitter and thats it. Give such as IM modern facilities, todays pitches and training and he d score 40 a season in that rubbish PL with todays porous defences and excuses for goalkeepers. Should have won the title in 67 Forest, but lost their nerve a bit and then lost to that rabble from N17 in the FAC Semi. They were a very, very good side. Terry Hennesey at the back having a career renaissance and Peter Grummitt in goal, Joe up top supported by Moore. What a spine! Happy days as a kid, alternating between Filbert St and the City Ground for matches.

Anyone living in the Nottingham area can enjoy an evening horse racing in honour of Forest football stars Ian Storey-Moore, Jeff Whitefoot (1959 Cup winner), Des Walker, & European Cup winners Kenny Burns, John Robertson & Gary Birtles. All these ex-players will be in attendance. Forest fans wearing their colours get in for £10.

Good old FJ ( I thought youd taken yr leave of us too?)Anyway mate, keep reading that well thumbed Ken Wolstenholmes footie Annual 60/61. Some cracking pics of old Danny, Maurice Norman and Bob Smith in it to wet yr kecks too old Son. Do they still play the old black and white film reels of the 'double heroes' at the Lane on that glorified TV set theyve got there?

Morning lads. Little occurring here, but have no fear, the Ashes are here! Getting my whites on this coming week end guys!! Nothing like a bit of medium pace and abject batting to while away ones Sundays playing the finest game the World has given. Give me Cricket, the guitar, some oils and a canvas, a rod and line on the Wye, the Thames or the Severn and a good lass (not necessarily in that order!) and the worlds a grand place whatever happens on PL football pitches.

Finsbury, unless Im very much mistaken you wrote a post not long ago tell us you were taking your leave. I must say I felt saddened by your departure from this site. I have always found it fascinating that you spend so much time watching and commenting on an arch rival. Perhaps I shouldnt as there is very little of interest going on down that neck of the woods.

ooops - make that 54 years. So you can dry your eyes FJ. It just seems like 64 (or longer).

Er, 54 years...but still counting, and very slowly!

Finsbury - Stagnation is better than decades of underachievement followed by selling a half-decent player for ridiculous money and p*ssing it all against one of the walls of your slowly crumbling edifice. Soldado, Capoue and Chiriches to name but three, added to a long list of other wasters. We've stagnated too when it comes to making changes at the top, but I'd take that every day over the mugs that have warmed your bench, e.g. Gross, Ramos and twitchin Arry. 64 years and counting since you won the title Finsbury...

  16. Finsbury Joe

    Jun 15, 2015, 1:18 #72014

I won't go through 60 questions, but I will say that stagnation, a massive points difference behind the Champions and less points than last year cannot possibly count as progress, unless you are one of those AKB types or a deluded manager . But I will say that Arsenal have made progress in their quest towards the mediocrity the AKBs, owner and manager strive for

Westie, it would have sounded and looked much better if you'd have come on before hand and said i'm wrong and he's going to play a good game and score two goals and be man of the match. Funny how he can seems to be able to produce for England.

Evening 24601. Caught around 15 minutes at a family member's house. Jack seemed instrumental in most moves, everything went down England's left in that spell, and Kieran looked a very good wing back to me-think we have five really good men for that position currently on the books.

jj, I see smoking jack has a lot to say on the England front now too, telling everybody we've proved our critics wrong, (he mustn't have been in Dublin then) where do these players get these statements out of? maybe that's the only reason Arsenal players are picked, like with their club they can talk a good game.

Well done to all at Gooner Towers. I think the general response to questions posed will display a polarity view of a higher percentile than some might imagine. Outside of the AKB/WOB daily jousting event we may well see a unified view.

Very user friendly and well balanced. Good job. What's the latest on Karaoke Jack (Ban?) and Chambers (Bung?). A penny for GG's thoughts at this limbering-up hour. Could be a fun summer 'doing it the Arsenal way' or is this just the general football way? The game stinks!

Great survey - just completed it. Look forward to seeing the results. Would be interesting to track the general sentiment of responses over the summer - i.e. those of us still riding the FA Cup wave; and what happens if we don't make the critical transfer signings we know we need.

    Jun 11, 2015, 7:24 #71942

jjet - I saw that too. And I think we need a bit of persective. Diaby's retention in the face of all those injuries wasn't his own fault - it was OGL's of course, and we'd all do the same and try to hang on if we were in his (Diaby's) shoes. It's sad because we all saw a genuine talent, albeit rarely, and hoped that he would turn out to be an important signing. That injury he picked up against Sunderland was the result of sheer brutality by some no-mark. I never got to the bottom of whether Diaby really was a Spurs fan (in which case balls to him!), but he had a pretty rough deal if you don't count the money he earned. I just think we should look back and wonder what might have been, rather than sounding like Jamie and his views in industrial relations.

  33. jjetplane

    Jun 10, 2015, 18:39 #71930

Newsflash! Diaby is to be released back into the community. Says he wants a CL medal/medical before he 'retires.' .... gonna miss that 'like a new signing' come January and Arsenal are 8th but looking for a top 3 finish and another FA Cup which will make them the best team in Europe since Theo signed a new improved contract that will concentate on his off-field persona leaving Arsene more time to play erm ... beach ball .... Seriously - this could be the year .... Current bets put Arsenal to finish season with ..... CRASH!
