The BFG – Your choice for club captain

(Ed's note – Continuing from part one of our end of season survey results, here’s the second part of five in total which we are running over the course of July)

Do you think Arsenal's summer 2014-15 transfer window activity (Chambers, Debuchy, Welbeck, Ospina and Sanchez) was:
1. Good 68%
2. OK 30%
3. Poor 2%

The fact of the matter is that by the end of the season we had a much better squad than we had on 1 June 2014, and each of these players were beneficial in different ways. A back-up goalkeeper who went on to become first choice, the French right back who kept Citeh bench-warmer Sagna out of the national side, a brilliant young Englishman to back him up, some experienced international class back-up for Giroud (finally!), and our new top scorer/hardest worker/best player rolled into one person. Maybe not the top, top quality that Arsene himself always talks about, but at least we weren't bricking ourselves at midnight in front of SSN waiting for Jim White to confirm that we're paying €50m for a Real Madrid reserve as our only signing…

It’s open to question, but assuming we did have first refusal to re-sign Cesc Fabregas last summer, would a £30m+ transfer fee plus £200k a week in wages been the best use of our available resources at the time?
Yes 25%
No 66%
Don’t know 9%

I'm sure the yes and no votes were reversed on NYE 2014, but as the year went on the Ozil that Wenger thought he bought started to appear, Cazorla was accidentally discovered as a perfect player as one of two deep-lying midfielders, and Cesc's second half of the season was very, very average. Sure, if we could get hold of the Fab that left us a few years ago then we'd all snap him up in a heartbeat but the new one isn't as good as that.

Which ONE area of the team do you think needs addressing the most urgently?
Goalkeeper 44%
Attack 29%
Midfield 11%
Defence 10%
Manager 6%

With Szczesny about 5% as good as he thinks he is (never a good thing if you're better at smuggling fags into the dressing room and taking selfies than you are catching a football), Ospina having to rely on adidas gloves AND stilts, and Emiliano Martinez struggling to get into the first XI of Football League teams he goes on loan to, we obviously need a new goalkeeper for 2015/16. Although if you put a gun to my head and asked me if I had to choose between a 'keeper,a DM, or a centre forward it'd feel like Sophie's Choice. Whilst Olivier is vastly underrated he's still not as good as the starting centre forward at Citeh, Chelsea, ManYoo, or even Spurs. Personally I would take an experienced DM to play alongside Cazorla/Ramsey/Wilshere as aside from Coquelin we don't have anyone else good enough to take that role on.

Limiting yourself to two names and excluding any players who have already been signed, who would you most like Arsenal to buy this summer?
They always say 'be careful what you wish for', but with everyone knowing we need a new goalkeeper and one particular person being (a) world-class; (b) wanting out of his current club; and (c) the guy and has family settled in London and not wanting to move; I don't blame all of you wanting Petr Cech and I wanted him myself. As we all know the deal has been completed and we're all happier than a dog with a tin dick.

Aside from Cech, other big names a lot of you have named are players we'd love to have in the positions we all want to fill. Based on the names a lot of you have put forward, if Dick Law and co can do a deal and get Cavani, Lacazette, Benzema or Higuain to play up front, Vidal, Schneiderlin or William Carvalho in the MD role (a lot of people fancied Geoffrey Kondogbia but he's gone to Inter already), or Hummels giving us some more beef at the back, then we'd probably win the Ashes, the X Factor and the next General Election, let alone the Premier League!

Who do you think will play the most games at right-back next season?
1. Hector Bellerin 61%
2. Mathieu Debuchy 38%
3. Carl Jenkinson <1%
4. Callum Chambers <1%

It will be very, very interesting to see what Arsene does at right back next season. Bellerin, like Coquelin, was a surprise discovery who only got his place in the team due to injuries, but he has been fantastic for us. However, the alternative is far more experienced, in the peak of his career, and French... so some would believe that he'll be pencilled in, double under-lined, and probably laminated into the team line-up! As everyone believes, though, If it ain't broke, don't fix it, so maybe le gaffer will keep it as it is.

Which current Arsenal player would you least like to see leave the club?
1. Alexis Sanchez 58%
2. Aaron Ramsey 14%
3. Jack Wilshere 12%
4. Santi Cazorla 8%

He was so good last season Alexis seems virtually irreplaceable at the moment. Even if we got 300 bajillion pounds for him there's no way you can replace a player like that – look at Liverpool when Suarez left. As Rambo's biggest fan I'm really pleased that he's in second place. At the age of 28 I think he'll be the best and most wanted midfielder in the world and we really do need to keep hold of him as well.

Of the following players who will be returning to the club this summer following a loan spell, who would you keep, who would you loan out again and who would you sell?
Chuba Akpom… Keep - 29% Loan - 64% Sell - 7%
Joel Campbell… Keep - 8% Loan - 15% Sell - 77%
Carl Jenkinson… Keep - 21% Loan - 57% Sell - 22%
Lukas Podolski… Keep - 15% Loan - 3% Sell - 82%
Yaya Sanogo… Keep - 2% Loan - 32% Sell - 66%

I find it a huge shame that so many WANT us to sell Podolski and I hope they'll be happy when he finishes top scorer in Turkey next season. Sure, he didn't warrant a starting place, but he was quite an effective super-sub. The best shot of anyone at the Club and he had a habit of scoring vital late goals from time to time. Certainly more so than Campbell (very similar player but the Primark version) or Sanogo (must have saucy photos of Wenger. Only reason I think he's at our place). Totally agree with the majority of you on Akpom and Jenko, though. Akpom is very much in demand so there must be something in him. If he has a year in the Championship that could man him up, and maybe another year at Wham (but this time under a football manager) will see our fellow Gooner Carl get even better and stay on afterwards.

Of the following youngsters, which do you think will make more than FIVE appearances for Arsenal's first team next season? Tick all that apply.
1. Chuba Akpom 59%
2. Gedion Zelalem 42%
3. Krystian Bielik 30%
4. Joel Campbell 9%
5. Jon Toral 4%

With a lot of people talking about him there is something in Chuba, so if he doesn't go on loan somewhere and we (inevitably) don't buy another forward then he has to make a few appearances this year otherwise we've wasted his time. Zelalem is a mystery. I've seen the youth teams on a few occasions and I'm not convinced he actually turned up – a combination of him being an Ozil-esque drifter, and built like an eight year old child, I suppose. Still – let's see what he's like post-puberty. As for Bielik, we paid €5m for the unknown DM in January and he hasn't appeared at all. With our Club often being tighter than a nun's nasty I'd be surprised if we see nothing of him and he doesn't start in the CoC Up.

Who should be club captain next season?
1. Per Mertesacker 56%
2. Aaron Ramsey 17%
3. Mikel Arteta 13%
4. Laurent Koscielny 6%
5. Jack Wilshere 5%

It has to be the BFG, if you ask me. Mikel Arteta has signed up for another year, but assuming Francis Coquelin remains the first choice holding midfielder, the BFG is our leader now. He has resurrected the tradition of getting to the centre circle and clapping all four stands when they come on to the pitch, marches up to us after every game, often with a clenched fist, and famously gave Ozil an earful when he tried to strop off the pitch rather than thank the people who pay his £8m a year salary. Rambo when PM4 departs, sure, but in the meantime it's Per.

Arsene Wenger still has two years left on his current contract. At the time of the survey do you feel he should:
See out those two years then leave 46%
Stay beyond his current contract 41%
Stand down this summer or next 13%

For once I feel we actually have a decent squad. Certainly we could do with more left-back cover as Gibbs can't be relied upon to stay fit for more than 2 games or so and a top striker is a must if we're to even bother with the Champions League, but aside from that there's not a lot to be desired. I think we will regret it if we don't get in cover or a first 11 challenger for Le Coq, but Arteta can fill in against the sh1te teams when required. We're in a good position, but it could be better - Certainly the tactics vastly improved in the second half of the season, but then there was still Monaco at home, so good work is very quickly undone at Arsenal.

I agree that le Coq should start as our DM and be backed by the manager. But he's not playing 50/60 matches and neither Arteta nor Flamini are League winning players. You might get away with them at home to lower division teams but what if Le Coq doesn't play against the top four. Same mistake as last season when not getting Gabriel in earlier cost us points in the Autumn. If Arteta is great in the dressing room, make him a coach because the balance of the midfielders in the squad is still not right and needs another high quality defensive type player. We have a comfortable £75 mill to spend. If you want to win-spend it. How many times?

Morning John Gage. Your reasoning is quite sound in my opinion, though there are other considerations, and this is where the decision-making lies, and why many disagree with each other. The individual and group decisions and views are nebulous. It basically depends on where you put the emphasis. Sometimes you have a similarity of opinion with another which reinforces your own view, occasionally vilified by another for holding such an idea. Strange isn't it? When Arteta was bought his price was for the duration of his contract, thereafter technically he costs nothing to retain if the club and he wants to remain. So Arteta is a 'freebie'. We keep him by giving him a wage. If he takes up what is considered valuable space in the squad it isn't such a good deal though, if he doesn't it is. So he can do a job as a deputy, as does Flamini, who is also a 'freebie'. What else does Arteta bring to the squad to sway the manager's decision? He is a big presence in the dressing room and training ground. He gives time and nurtures younger players. Is a statesman, dignified and a good 'club captain', if not an iconic, 'drive them on' skipper on the pitch. I think he is an asset others might disagree, but the determining point is could/should we buy better to replace. That is always a decisive aspect.

@Westlower, I completely agree that Arsene Wenger sees Arteta as cover for Coquelin, hence his decision to extend his contract. But I am curious to know if the Arsenal fans view Arteta as a DM. When watching him at Everton, I was under the impression he was a CM. I was actually hoping that Wenger would consider getting a dedicated DM, not "top, top quality" but just a solid, reliable DM as cover and let Arteta go. Does anyone else share this opinion?

Dad's Army .... All hail the unstoppable rise of ...... Stoke. Arsene is truly magic and we are all enthralled until we look again and see Oliver. Is there anyone better? Can we beat Wolfsburg? Looks like Villa ain't selling so who believes the papers now? This site, like the PL - is split with laughter! Federer, Williams and ..... Oliver. Quite like him really, it's just that ...... Sorry, forgot Danny too .... Duh .....

@Bard, I don't believe home grown players count as such until they reach 21 years of age. You can add all the under 21 players to the squad but they don't count as home grown until they've been registered at the FA or Welsh FA for 36 months or 3 full seasons before their 21st b-day (or at the end of the season when they turn 21). Chambers will qualify as home grown next season. Ox qualifies as home grown this season but he didn't last season as Martinez was our 8th home grown squad member. Currently we can let one player go and still maintain the minimum of 8. This is my understanding of the rules & if anyone can correct me, please do so.

Evening all. Hi Baddie, a to the point piece there. That Federer guy is something else. I thought once he reached 30 he was going to fade away and the young un's take over. Can't believe he's 34 next month and still playing like he is. Some determination and motivation for him to keep at it. Expecting it to be a cracker of a final. What odds Beckham being there westie? At least cech wants to see his career out playing first team football, compared to cudicini who was happy to sit on the bench and take the pay. What a waste of a goalkeeping resource that was? As for good to go? Yes, there's no apparent extreme dross wasting a team space now, which is a first for some years, so this has to be the best prepared we've started a season in yonks. Most seem happy with the situation, and expectations are based on our good run in the last half of last season. Wenger still has time to add, but I still find us in that perennial position of needling to add 2 or 3 players if we are serious about challenging. We are in the laps of the gods again hoping City can falter even more and Chelsea capitulate. Can't see it.

Westie a good post as far as it goes. But you could sell Jack and Gibbs and buy someone else or fill the spots with someone from the youth set up. The squad is unbalanced and needs rejigging as well as adding to. i agree about Coq and your argument is strengthened by the fact that the boss loves cheap. Why pay 25m when he already has someone in place. The counter argument is an old one, are we trying to win the big ones or treading water ? Your posts of the treading water type. Which is precisely why there is a split in the fan base. I noted that over 40% are not convinced that the club are doing all they can to try and win things.

We're strong enough we don't need anybody, very convenient that, the acceptance by the sheep that no one else maybe arriving, comical, others have been accepting and been expecting that for years, they used to have such faith in their messiah during the window/windows.

I think most people only wanted to sell pod cause it was obvious he didn't fit in the system we play enough to start and he wasn't prepared to sit on the bench, and rightly so. I would've loved to have kept him and used him off the bench to bang in a few when we needed it but he wants more than that. Not that hard to get your head round.

Latest transfer news Arsenal will not act on their buy back clause (?) regarding one Lionel Messi. It was actually Arsene who discovered Messi while trawling through a ****ing shed load of videos. Which neatly brings me onto Serena Williams. She is the best thing in sport since Ali whipped Brian London. Now please tell me what Beckham has done exactly? Last but not least - Old Fergie and Henry shooting the **** at court one. Fergie is a cooler cat, period. Watch and listen Terrence. Serens, Serena, Serena the big OMG .....

@John F, Keeping the balance of the squad is more difficult than it first appears. Whatever we think of Welbeck, Theo, Gibbs, Ramsey, Szczesny, Wilshere, Coquelin & Ox they are guaranteed a place in the squad because they make up the minimum requirement of 8 home grown players. Signing a new striker to replace Giroud is a different argument. Who's available that's better? Benzema, Higuain or Lacazette, are they really that much better than Giroud?

    Jul 11, 2015, 9:48 #72670

Common consensus among Gooners seems to be a need for a new DM. How would Coq react to a new signing? Does the manager tell him I don't believe you're up to the job so I've signed a replacement, albeit dressed up as cover? What quality DM would sign just to be used as cover? I suspect Coq's new found belief & confidence would be shattered by being relegated to the bench. Surely Arteta extending his stay by 12 months is telling us that he is the cover for Coq. Unless there IS a lack of belief in Coq's ability or he suffers a long term injury during August, no new signing is necessary. As our team commitment is to play on the front foot we are very unlikely to start a game with two DM's. The media will always generate stories about likely or unlikely transfers, what else is there for them in the close season. Twas ever thus!

My mate a. Forest fan review of Akpom was not very positive poor first touch and cannot play on his own up front. He ended up getting booed off by the Forest fans.He has not yet scored in a league game..Did we let the wrong striker go in Benik Afobe who banged them in for fun to MK Dons and Wolves.Positive news coming out that we have signed the German team fitness coach Shad Forsythe who might help our injury record.I'm not sure if we got Peter Cechs coach but if we do it will show signs of a long awaited shake up of the backroom staff something Ferguson used to do to keep the the team fresh

Wenger seems to be reverting to type in the transfer market. Not buying a back up for Le Coq and sticking with Arteta. This could be the last piece in the jigsaw but his loyalty to his players is above everything else for him. I wouldn't be surprised to see Santi played as our defensive midfielder before Christmas.

  19. Badarse

    Jul 11, 2015, 6:25 #72667

Assuming that nobody else arrives, is that OK? Personally I have been quite relaxed regarding the whole transfer process. Certainly it is linked to taking myself out of the media loop, comprising guess work and hype, but I am certain I don't exist in a fool's paradise bubble. Therefore much of the attitude I employ as just stated helps, but reason and logic is the engine which drives the mentality. We have a strong squad. Not the strongest perhaps, but currently perhaps the third behind The two rich clubs. This is on paper and no match is ever won or lost on paper. Despite the Blue Moany mind set I really believe the spirit and camaraderie within the club is top notch. This will push us on-two FA Cup Final wins, victories at all our recent Wembley trips will cement that. I see Man, C struggling for cohesion-a continuation of last season's problems with only CFC setting the pace. The fickleness of injuries shall play their part of course, but if my assessment is roughly about right then the criteria mentioned augers well. CFC had a relatively sound injury season, we by contrast had key injuries to quite a few influential men. Averages suggest it will not be replicated this season, so we may therefore begin on a more level playing field, a reversal of fortunes between the two clubs and who knows what will occur. I am good to go. Roger Federer played some of the best tennis of his life and advances to the final, against another wonderfully gifted, sporting athlete. Remember I drew the age comparison with Cech recently so that too will be certainly of minimal importance in performance terms. As I said, am good to go. Back and knee plaguing me after my clumsy heroics in goal last night, off to Parkrun soon, what a beautiful morning. Anyone for poached eggs?

I suspect no 'quality' signings will be made until we've played Chelsea on August 2nd. If we get badly beaten the cheque book will come out. If we win we'll probably go with what we've got.

David - thanks. Agree with your commentary about Podolski and Chuba, but reckon you're wide of the mark about Klopp. Think of the players that left Dortmund for one reason or another. Most clubs would have struggled under those circumstances. The results from the last question are interesting although the qualification about self-sustainability possibly distorted the results. Is it self-sustaining if the club makes £1 profit but all the head honchos take millions out in wages and dividends/bonuses/consultancy fees, whatever that old rascal silent stan calls it? We should be wary of buying into the club's own propaganda about self-sustaining models is my point. It's a smoke screen for bleeding the club of profits that they make from the likes of us.

I would definitely question David Oudot's assertion that last season's Fabregras isn't as good as the previous version. Remind us who topped the assists table? My belief is that the reasons the poll ended as it did were a) the phrasing of the question ('Best use of available resources' - when we could easily have afforded it and/or recouped money elsewhere); b) The fact that he went to Chelsea and not elsewhere. I'm sure the results would have been reversed otherwise.
