Gunners don’t need to sign striker

It’s quality in wide midfield that leads to titles, and that is what Arsenal lack most right now

Gunners don’t need to sign striker

Overmars – But one example of the form

Recent articles posted on this website have covered the summer we have ahead of us and what it might in tale with regards to how fat Wenger's wallet will be and which players will be bought to empty it. The re-occurring theme seems to be that we need a new striker, with names such as E'too, Huntelaar and Owen doing the rounds.

However for me the thought of another striker just seems like a waste of money. We have Henry, Van Persie, Adebayor, Walcott, Bendtner and Aliadiere (should he not be sold which I have to admit I think he will). On top of this there is also the possibility that nobody will want Reyes and we end up with him back on our books, and Wenger has already publicly stated he would be happy to use him as he has qualities we have lacked this season. So if you add Reyes to the list above that is 7 strikers!!! Why would we want another?

For me there are two positions in particular that I want Wenger to buy for and one has already been dealt with - I can only hope that Fabianski is started ahead of Lehmann and Almunia and not used as a "hot prospect". I have nothing against either of our current keepers but a new and younger number one who can establish himself for years to come is something I would like to see. The second position is the wing, and I believe Wenger needs to buy two wingers to booster our squad and title chances (this could perhaps be reduced to one should Wenger keep his word and use Reyes should he re-join us).

The reason I am of the above opinion is a result of Wenger's previous Arsenal squads and title successes. First there was 97/98. On the wings we had Marc Overmars and Ray Parlour. Overmars had the skill and Parlour the work rate - both though provided double figures of goals and assists too. Then Overmars was sold and Parlour began to age and we went a few seasons without a trophy until we reached 01/02 and the unbeaten season. By this point Pires and Freddie had adjusted to the premiership and were now of the same standard (or higher in my opinion) of Overmars and Parlour. Like before one had the flair (Pires) and the other had the work rate (Freddie) but one thing was again guaranteed, both players would get into double figures for goals and plenty of assists. Last year we didn't win a trophy, however we did reach the CL Final and I for one was sure that the wing play of Pires, Reyes and Freddie played a key role both defensively and providing Henry with assists.

And then we come to this season. We have won no trophies and I can't help but feel we were left empty handed by our lack of wingers. Pires and Reyes left, both of whom played a massive part last year in terms of assists and goals. That left us with Rosicky who was never going to light the stage in his first premiership season (if Pires couldn't manage it nor could Tomas), Hleb who is light weight and Freddie who is past his sell by date. Needless to say the volume of goals and assists was always going to be low on return from these three players. The knock on effect was that too much pressure was put onto our front men and easy chances were missed all season long. The fact that TH14 and RVP11 then got injured only added to the worry as the burden of being the sole goal scorer was falling onto the shoulders of our second string strikers.

As a result I would much rather see Wenger spend some money on wingers who can get these goals and assists, which in turn will provide the strikers with more chances to score with less pressure on their shoulders as they will know the team as a whole will get some goals. The only question could be who these wingers are. Ryan Babel has been mentioned which I think is promising but he will also be likely to have first season adjustments to make - however the sooner we can find our next pair of wingers the sooner I think we will have a trophy in the cabinet. Overmars/Parlour, Pires/Ljungberg......who will/should be next???
