Arsenal vs Olympiakos - Past Meetings

A recall of Champions League visits from now familiar opposition

Arsenal vs Olympiakos - Past Meetings

The side that lined up in 2011

Playing Olympiakos in the Champions League is becoming a regular habit for Arsenal, with the two clubs due to meet in the group stage for the fourth time since 2009.

Both sides lost their opening matches in Group F, but Arsenal remain odds-on in the Uefa competitions betting to make it through to the knockout rounds again.

Olympiakos, though, have proven to be tough opposition in the past and Arsene Wenger won’t be taking anything for granted ahead of the game at the Emirates Stadium.

There have been three previous meetings between the two clubs at the Emirates – all of which were also played on MatchDay 2 of the Champions League

SEPTEMBER 2009 – ARSENAL 2 OLYMPIAKOS 0

A game in which the scoreline didn’t fully reflect the control Arsenal had over their Greek opponents. Arsenal created chance after chance, but found Olympiakos goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis to be in fine form as he saved from the likes of Tomas Rosicky, Andrey Arshavin and Cesc Fabregas. Arsenal came close to opening the scoring when Fabregas struck the crossbar, while Thomas Vermaelen somehow missed when presented with a golden opportunity and there was also a handball appeal for a penalty. The breakthrough eventually came 12 minutes from time when Fabregas and Eduardo combined for Robin van Persie to score. Any late thoughts of a comeback from Zico’s Olympiakos side were snuffed out with four minutes to go when Fabregas’ low ball into the area was cleverly flicked home by Arshavin.

SEPTEMBER 2011 – ARSENAL 2 OLYMPIAKOS 1

Wenger was serving a touchline ban for this visit of Olympiakos, while Van Persie started the game on the bench as a precaution ahead of the upcoming North London derby. The match also featured Alex Song in a centre-back role and he created the opening goal after just eight minutes. Song’s ball picked out Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and, after an initial stroke of good fortune, he fired his shot through the legs of Olof Mellberg and off the post to become Arsenal’s youngest English scorer in the Champions League. It was soon followed by another first Arsenal goal as Andre Santos doubled the lead on 20 minutes. After Santos’ cross came back to him, the left-back went for goal instead and fired home inside the near post. Olympiakos quickly pulled one back, though, as David Fuster headed home Ariel Ibagaza’s cross following a short corner and the Greeks came close to an equaliser when Vassilis Torosidis hit the crossbar.

OCTOBER 2012 – ARSENAL 3 OLYMPIAKOS 1

Wenger was in the stands once again for a home date with Olympiakos and he saw Arsenal overcome several scares before claiming the points. Gervinho had one of his better games for the club and opened the scoring three minutes before half-time. However, Olympiakos were deservedly level in stoppage time through Kostas Mitroglou’s fine header from Leandro Greco’s cross. Following the let-offs in the first half, Arsenal improved after the break and regained the lead on 56 minutes when Lukas Podolski hammered home a shot after Gervinho got his cross in at the second attempt. Olympiakos remained a constant source of danger, but Arsenal wrapped up the points in the fourth minute of added time when Aaron Ramsey scored after Olivier Giroud had helped the ball on.

There is potential for Wengers biggest humiliation yet - less than 3 points gained in the group stage. That surely would finally open up discussions on his competence.

Absolutely Mark, one other thing the Ozil experiment is over...seriously how bad does this guy have to be to get dropped!! I have never seen him do anything in any game of 'real' significance. 42 million for that!!

Nick T: exactly this is not a limited team of the Terry Neil era this is a team that can have stand out players. the limiters are the manager and his lick spittle supporters.

Posted during the game when we were 2-1 down, very angry. Cowards, every game The Ox ha ! moved away from the shot, stuck a toe out, thought shin pads if he'd done what he's paid for would have aleviated his agony. BFUG same lack of balls for the third goal. Ospina ??? EVERYBODY but wenger knew it was a mistake. Obviously ospina will eventually replace Czech long- term !! Almunia etc. League wide open if only we'd ... still that costs money and a modicum of managerial aptitude. Don't hold your breath. SAME OLD SAME OLD

Literally no point talking about that, its too obvious. The shame with it all is we really do have some very good players but anyone with even the slightest ambition is gonna be moving on soon....how long is Sanchez going to put up with ****e like that.

What will it take for this serial under-achiever to walk? Tottenham didn't take the micky mouse cup seriously last week, thankfully.

Jameson's and Colesaws favourite keeper has probably made one of the worst errors seen live on TV in the last 5 years. Jamerson's and Coleslaws support for Ospina and rotation of bit part players had continually added to our failures. If we pull off a win unlikely!?! but the pathetic AKB's must take the blame for this one... Continual failure, reliance on flakes, dropping of characters from the team. Jamerson, coleslaw clockender, losers in life, to frightened to win

Evening exiled & dangerous/and hi to you too mbg. It was just tongue in cheek stuff. My views are well documented, but no reasons are blamed on AW, sorry to say. TV rules, friends. Simples! Sponsors plough in 'big bucks' for loadsa advertising. UEFA gets fat on the 'dropsies' so competition has to be expanded. ergo more games. For the CL read, Olympics, World Cup, Euros, etc. The more coverage there is then the more the sponsors will pay, so we get a diluted event. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth, but there it is. Why complain when those usually grumbling are the same ones who want the benefits of big pay outs to their club to then splash it on a big name star? All a bit ugly. Remember the old hands on here were raised on just one club per country, they had to be the champions and it was a 2-legged KO competition. Loved it, as probably all old whiskered ones did, but those days have passed, the financial bubble grows and we all suck it up. Now about those dinosaur costumes...

Badarse - that might be going back a little too far. Presumably the crowd would have to dress in shirt, tie, overcoat and flat cap? Just going back to a straight knockout, or at least tweaking the group format to keep the actual football remotely exciting would do for me. I suppose others might actually enjoy the dead rubber matches that rounds five and six of the group stages usually produce...... perhaps not for Arsenal this season.

I am ready for yhe marketing dept . Who do I send my presentatione to DUDEeeeee .....

Ron, good one on the hair styles, and good name for olly, i really believe their all trying to out do each other in the hair and pretty boy department i bet even their glad Chesney is gone and no longer a rival as he was the prettiest nice boy of the lot,(and he was the bloody keeper) if only they'd take as much time and effort in trying to better their game as they do their appearance while on the pitch.

Wenger with his team selections gives the game away regarding the so called Champions League - it's obvious, and has been for donkeys years ,that qualifying for next season's big bucks group stage is always more important for him than actually trying to do the best he can to win the current terms tournament It is all one big sham .As Wenger himself admitted 4th place in the league is always the first trophy. With that now looking like 3rd place is the first trophy it could get interesting with 4 sides going for 3 places. Then there is always the possibility that Liverpool or even Everton try to get in on the act as well . Will Arsene be able to handle the pressure with no safety net of 4th place is the question. I wouldn't put any money on that happening.

Well we could really go retro and just have a London eleven play a Paris eleven. Then if the game was drawn it would be decided by tossing the ref on his head-or his tail. No hair, tattoos or false teeth allowed. The players could all dress in dinosaur outfits, which would give us the heads up as we have our own Gunnersaurus. If a penalty is awarded the keeper would stand perfectly still to one side of his goal in gentlemanly fashion, allowing the opposing forward to roll the ball into an empty net, as keepers oft did-when many thought the earth was flat. Nope, guess it wouldn't happen-evolution of the game has seen to that. Never mind, eh?

Exactly, Ron - champions only, straight knockout. It worked so well for years. But football is now a business first and a sport second. The guy I work with came up with a great suggestion today - just play one round in the group stage instead of home and away. No margin for error at all. Some teams would play twice at home and others only once, but that's luck of the draw...... again, no chance of that ever happening.

Did you see Chamberlain in the presser? he's certainly been well schooled it talking (if only he was been as welled coached on the pitch) I thought he was never going to shut up it rolled of the tongue rabbiting on about learning from others (where have we heard that before) and OGL sitting beside him grinning, I even thought he looked embarrassed and was going to intervene at one stage and shut him up, wally eat your heart out.

It really is all one big yawn this tedious called Champions League Wenger like a rat on a wheel going around and around to nowhere malarkey .Numbskull's like lee KFC buy into this clap-trap season after tedious season they must lead boring lives . Just as well that the Prem kept the 4th place qualifier spot for donkeys years to help Wenger to perpetrate his illusion of competing at top level. Sky gave up showing these midweek bore fests because of the poor viewing figures the non-supporters of the clubs involved are just not interested and that goes for many of the actual supporters as well.

The Corruption League sums it up RON and the poison reaches all the way into Holloway. I may check the highlights tomorrow but all these meaningless games at the Euro trough pass me by now. The Everton game meant more than this. Wenger is presently blabbering on about 'fear factors' on 5L. For Location. location see qualification, qualification. Two decades of tedium but let's hope Platini gets it too ....

exiled - it ll never happen now of course, but just making it for actual 'Champions' and revert to straight knock out would do it for me. Think how it would breathe life into the domestic leagues again. The Arsenals of this World would need to shake off the tired old cobwebs for a start. Pipe dream! Money is far more important than a competitive euro wide footballing environment as we know. The very format of that CL smacks of footballs corruption, corrupted bodies and all of those that suck greedily from the same filthy trough.

We always end up playing the same sides, this has become so tedious and repetitive. Doing away with the seeding system might make things more interesting. Maybe change the format to sixteen groups of three with an extra knockout round for 32 qualifiers before Christmas? No-one would risk "resting" players if the group stage was more concentrated - losing your first match would put huge pressure on qualification and make things more interesting. And 16 extra sides in the group stage would allow more "champions" in........

Whatever the 'best team' is Westie hes gotta play it v Olyp's hasnt he. Due to the fiasco in the first game. For me Westie, i cant raise any interest in the CL until the KO stage. I used to love it, the midweek atmosphere and all that, but its gone flat. Not just for AFC. The tourny needs a pep up. Perhaps when Platini s incarcerated it ll get one!!

Good to see Coq is back in training, whether he plays tomorrow or is kept back for the Mankies on Sunday. Ramsey & Cazorla as the midfield pairing? Theo looks certain to lead the line again with Giroud suspended.

I must say I love a Champions League night at the Emirates. The music and the pomp always gives me that great inner glow and goosebumps. From a continent of 750 million people only 32 clubs make it to the Group stages. The fact that our club from Islington has been continuously present for the past 18 seasons is an outstanding achievement by itself. Looking forward to the game tomorrow. Hoping Theo and Alexis will be among the goals again. COYG!

A regular habit and a regular meaningless money making exercise, as we're not in it to win it, and not likely to be until we have a manager with ambition.
