Online Ed: Arsenal silence the Greeks

Football eh? Bloody hell

Arsenal, on their knees after getting nothing from their first two group games and about to face Bayern Munich twice, beat the odds and managed to make the last 16 of the Champions League through attaining three wins out of their last four group fixtures matches and getting better than the two goal margin they required against Olympiacos. So the words of Alex Ferguson, spoken after their winning this competition on the tenth anniversary of Arsenal’s famous two goal victory at Anfield seem somehow fitting to title this editorial.

Shorn of first choices Alexis Sanchez, Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla, and with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain about the only option to improve things going forward on the bench, we were informed before the game that Mesut Ozil might have a dodgy calf. It didn’t augur well and for the first 20 minutes or so, there didn’t look like too much indication of what was to come from the Gunners.

Then, Flamini hit the bar and Giroud headed straight at the keeper. Arsenal were breaking through and just before the half hour, Ozil and Ramsey combined brilliantly to set up Giroud to power home a near post header. Halfway there. Certainly there were a few defensive scares, but Cech did what you would expect him to do and the Arsenal defence made key interceptions at the vital moments, or committed fouls in the midfield as and when required. It was a fairly professional European performance at a venue where results rarely come easy. Theo Walcott missed the first of two very good chances before the break but fortunately the other first choice centre forward knew where the goal was.

Confirmation came soon after the restart when Campbell found Giroud, who looked like he might have to go off only a couple of minutes earlier with ankle ligament problems, to guide home and make the scoreline the required 2-0.

It was knife edge stuff – Olympiacos only needed one goal to go through. It was hardly Anfield 89 as the Greeks had plenty of time to score it. One feared gung ho Gunners might suffer if they went forward with too many bodies in search of a third, but they were not caught on the break.

A penalty was perhaps fortunately given in the 65th minute. A less experienced referee might not have made such a key call, but it presented Giroud with the opportunity to get a first hat-trick for the club and he took it wonderfully well.

They saw the remainder of the game out comfortably. Olympiacos had more possession and territory, but could fashion very little with it. There were superb performances all over the pitch, especially from Koscielny, Joel Campbell, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey. And obviously Giroud who was immense after failing to win his physical battles in the opening stages. A real team performance. And a welcome one in the unpopular blue third kit.

So the last 16 once again. Against one of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Wolfsburg and Zenit St Petersburg. After Monaco last season, let’s not hear talk of an easy draw. Arsenal will face one of these sides and hope the law of averages means that, for a change, they can progress to the last eight. Play as they did last night and against Bayern in the home group game and they will have a chance. Confident? No. Open to possibility? Surely, the definition of a football fan.

Let’s hope the team can get their focus back quickly for the Premier League and hit the ground running v Villa on Sunday. Last night was a great victory to be savoured and we can only hope it has some meaning towards the business end of the season. Arsenal got themselves into a position they shouldn’t have, but dug themselves out of it once they were there. And credit to the players and the manager for that.

We can be positive about the Barcelona game. In my eyes the best team in europe this year is Bayern Munich and in a game that was competitive with both keepers having great games, we ran out 2 0 winners at home. So long as we have all available options and a strong bench, theres no reason why we cannot repeat that against Barcelona. The return leg however, is another matter, a massive ask but never say never. And if we lose, out of the champions league early again to a fantastic team this time means we can hopefully focus on the league and win the f*cking thing.

Not as many popping up out of the woodwork tonight as there was last night to have their say, i suppose in the cold light of day they've realised like a lot of us already did it changed nothing.

Perhaps now we can dispense with the "resting" of Cech in future games. All we have done is achieved what we should have achieved - second to Bayern. Anyway the white knuckle ride is over until the New Year when the competition starts in earnest. We are well placed so no more nonsense re fatigue, fixtures, referees etc. especially with a transfer window approaching.

they didn't affect the team last night because we won, if we'd lost and gone out it would have been a different matter. But rest assured if we're brought back down to earth with a sore arse on Sunday they'll be trotted out in all their glory.

The reality of all of this malarkey is that we should be beating sides like Zagreb and Olympiacos. Home or away. The problem is Wenger's management - he creates n unnecessary problem for himself and then gets praised for solving it ! Again I reiterate that he has not gone 20 years in Europe without winning a trophy by being unlucky. This surely must be a record for any manager of a top club >? Instead of talking about this though all we hear is how Arsene keeps qualifying to play in Europe and the first KO rounds .No mention though of him going out in the first KO round every season. Will it be different this time >? We can't be sure of this even if he gets one of the easier sides ,as it was claimed last season when we drew Monaco and they were rubbished by old Chips and others if you recall as being no hopers . So back here on planet Earth after the euphoria and relief of Arsene putting the Greeks in their place ( at last ) some of us will hold-fire on what may or may not occur after Monday nights draw. We have been here before only to receive reality checks. I must add also that any comparison between last night's beating Olympiacos foe second place in our group on G/D can not be in anyway compared with us winning the league title at Anfield in '89 on G/D. You couldn't make it up.

Bard, your dead right there, a real top class keeper makes all the difference, how many times have we been saying that over the last ten years of failure, but TOF knew best, the waiter, flappy, etc, etc, and to think we'd still be in the same position if Cech hadn't fallen into his lap.

ArseneKnewBest, and that's the wengerites problem, they don't like others views, unless it's telling every body what a great prophet their messiah is, and anything else no matter if it's the truth about him or the team they just can't stand, and what really gets up their nose the most is that a lot of fans on here including myself can distinguish between both and do, but what really gets on their wick and sticks in their caw is (and their always trying to make out other wise)that we enjoy an Arsenal win too just as much as them (that really pisses them off), even though I just stayed in the pub and didn't make it to the Emirates for the street party.

Just asking - yr not grasping how fatigue works at all are you? Its only a factor after a loss. Personally speaking i dont think Olympiakos put up much of a fight last night. They didn't know how to handle their situation. Their fixtures pre game had been intense and this was the reason Arsenal prevailed. I can recall a game away at Leyton Orient in 1957 when Orient fought like tigers and we won 1-0. They were a truly top marque side then and we were warriors that night. So, last night cant compare with that halycon night at Brisbane Road. Right then, ok. Enough of this chat. Im off to fetch my wippet. Its time for his walk and my bet on the 3.30 pm at Lingfield. Red hot tip though i dont need tips, but you have to be pleasant to the feckless fools who offer them dont you. My own strategy is unfailing. The bookies dread seeing me coming. They know ill clean them out. Ive never lost a bet in 42 years. Blimey, ive come over all tired and feeling that twinge again in my back. No worries, ill rest for a few hours and get a scan. I must be in the red zone after 3 bets already this morning (all winners mind you). Oh no, hang on, sorry. Red Zone is that tip i mentioned at Lingfield. Think ill bet on it. My favourite two words, red and zone! Sure fire winner. Look out Paddy Power, isa coming!

Did not finish work til late last night and have only just watched highlights. Giroud was fantastic so let's forget the Wally promotion who in a sense is a distraction to this current team. All gob and no accuracy. Joel's make for the second was as good as a Barca thread and maybe Campbell is going to be a great player. He has already had an incredible history for a young player so let's hope he goes on. Great report from Kevin as always amd though it was just another runners up in the CL it certainly was a performance to be really Proud of. Well done Mr Webster you old so and so, well done all at the club and special mention for Dr Perry who is now the official lucky mascot. Whatever next? Got a real buzz from this! It would now be brilliant if Webbie could go out with one last great season and I certainly wish it could be. Old Fergie knew what he was on about when he coined that phrase. I use it practically every week. Joel/Joel/Joel/Joel/Born is the prince of errrr Holloway ..... The Grove/the grotto/loving Olly - **** - I'm losing it!

Wenger has a knack for getting just enough out of his teams to keep his top 4 and Round of 16 records going. Now the team need to avoid the 'we can beat anyone, this is our year' arrogance and complacency following a good win that has been their undoing so, so many times before. I just feel sorry for fans like goonercolesyboy, who can't enjoy the moment as they're too worried about what others are thinking. Though maybe he enjoys getting angry on here more than watching the highlights again.

As usual an accurate assessment Kevin. As others have said it's really comforting to have a proper gk at long last. I thought Ferdinand was unfair last night when he said before the game that he looked at Arsenal's bench and apart from the Ox there was no-one you could bring on to get goals if needed. I think he either said or implied this would hinder progress in the future. No-one reminded him that Welbeck,Sanchez, Cazorla and Rosicky were injured along with attacking midfielder Wilshere. Hopefully some of these will be fit for the next round.

    Dec 10, 2015, 13:08 #80560

Following the results against Norwich and WBA the excuses of fatigue and injuries were trotted out; can anyone throw some light on why neither of those factors appeared to affect the team last night?

    Dec 10, 2015, 12:53 #80559

It was clear to me, the difference in the speed of the team going forward, was greatly enhanced by having Ramsey instead of Santi in the centre of midfield. We broke with speed time and time again. Santi, especially in Europe, slows us down so much, that our counterattacking threat is diminished. Great performance all round, from the players and Manager.

    Dec 10, 2015, 12:23 #80557

Well you know what it's always like with TOF and his players when there's no pressure and nothing to play they play for it and do it well. We're through now to our usual position, later than usual though thanks to wengers incompetence but through to the next round, (something the AKB's keep reminding us off but never what happens next)so nothing has changed we've won nothing, or have we ? lets see us doing the same now with something to play for while under pressure and we can all start getting moist. Well done the team for safeguarding OGL's precious record a good performance all round, unnecessary really as it shouldn't have been needed in the first place.

    Dec 10, 2015, 12:11 #80556

Gaz - yes I reckon The Ox is now even further down the pecking order after Campbell's performance and to be fair it's no more than he deserves. I know he has struggled with injuries and has not ever had a long run in the first team but then again he hasn't ever really justified it. Could be on his way soon? Would gladly swap him for a top drawer defensive midfielder in January!

What a great night in Athens. Funny how many on this site were slagging Campbell off saying he was a waste of space, they all look a bit silly now.You have to give young players time to settle in. It took Ozil two years to find his true form and many of us have been proved wrong about him.The worry now is that Wenger will now think he does not need to buy, a couple of top class players coming in could give us a great chance of the title and maybe a third fa cup win. Lets hope the Arsenal of last night turns up at villa. Well done lads

Well that was welcome unexpected but welcome, we are a Jekyll and Hyde team these days but the best side of our schizophrenic club showed up last night and put on a performance to savour! At the very least we are now spared the ignominy and physically draining experience of the Europa Cup. Progression from the first knock out stage will depend on many things not least our attitude against whomever we are drawn against. My worry now is that our already debilitating injury woes will go from dire to destructive, knocks to Ozil and Giroud are worrying indeed, nevertheless our attitude at Villa Park on Sunday must be the same as last nights in Greece, despite the Villains lowly position and awful form lest a " shock" be the result of a return to arrogance and loss of focus , COME ON YOU GUNNERS!

Great escape, all credit to Wenger and boys in turning it around. Campbell will get more starts and hopefully that will help us going until Alexis returns. Giroud's confidence will lead us and Ozil is in his prime. Glad to see the confidence in our defence and its all because of our major coup, Cech....Mourinho will rue about it until his fag end ! COYG, Villa next !

Good win but I think it has only delayed the inevitable, however it is good to see Ramsey in his correct playing position, it makes a difference to the balance of the team. Campbell's ball for the second was a delight, not just to see the pass but to give it the right weight and timing, it reminded me of a certain Dutchman. Will we take advantage of this result and strengthen for the second part of the season?

Colsey I'm not the first to call you obssevive as you either seem to hang around MBG like an angry parrot or waste oxygen asking how others view an Arsenal win. Anyway terrific performance really happy for Joel who appears to be coming good. The real question is can the back to the wall performance be carried over to the WBA style away matches. Get that right and a title bid is on. Drift in those games and its same old song!

We killed the game for 20 mins and then hit them on the break. Flanimal ran a solid midfield. Surprise surprise, we got something, with the appropriate tactics. Yes the AMG's are happy. It's all that we ask for. Not necessarily to succeed but to apply ourselves properly in seeking to do so. We have now whacked Man United, done a job on Bayern Munich, and yummed up a very difficult trip to Greece. We are becoming less and less at home to Mr Cockup and it is that which is the cause of celebration. George Graham says we need another defensive midfielder in January, Mr Wenger. He has worked rather more than one day in football, so why don't you, for once in your life, listen and learn.

Great fightback from Arsenal to get this far after poor start. But we're still pretty much in the same position we've been in for the last 6 years: second in the group, facing elimination in round two. Still too early to detect any signs of progress. Surely time for a bit of Baddie?

    Dec 10, 2015, 10:08 #80545

Really good show and an enjoyable one. The merit in the performance wasn't for the quality of the football for me, it was by virtue of the fact that we sent a team with the right attitude. They put their bodies on the line, got the blocks in and used their strength to defend well. Even Koschielny didn't close his eyes when he tacked and blocked!! Another good perf from young Campbell. So for me, though it was good it raises as many questions as the performance answered the question asked of the team on the night. The issue remains why cant AFC play a mentally strong game with commitment every match? Answer, theyre not asked too.Remedy - work it out for yourselves. PS Good stuff Giroud lad!!

Fair report Kevin and congrats to the team on a fine performance. Yes Olympiacos were poor, but so what! Campbell is certainly growing on me and it was fantastic play from him to set up Giroud's second goal. That said, won't be surprised if we draw Real Madrid in the knock outs, as we have not played them for a while and we all know that's about as far as we go anyway. However, glad we are not in the Europa as our paper thin squad(Wenger is unlikely to play too many of the kids) would not be able to cope with that plus a 'title tilt'! Let's hope the team replicates these performances throughout the rest of this month starting on Sunday.

Maybe someone has had a word with Giroud. Very good performance, and credit where's it's due switching Campbell and Walcott round worked very well, apart from those already mentioned I thought Monreal had another solid game.As far as the clubs concerned the main objective has been achieved, whoever we're drawn against is largely irrelevant as we know but at least the money is on its way......so congratulations Stan the cheque is in the post and you can go ahead now and submit your paperwork for your 'ahem' consultancy fee

It was a very accomplished performance and a fantastic win by the Gunners. Ozil, Flamini and Rambo were brilliant as a midfield trio; they never stopped working and kept us on the front foot all night. Great effort by Joel Campbell too, he definitely is taking his opportunity to shine. Finally a word for Giroud, he has been working on his first time finishing in training and that effort paid off big time for the second goal. All together now, “Laa, Laa, Laa, la-la-laah, la-la-laah, GIROUD!”

Tony E: That's just it isn't it? Until we see some evidence that the inevitable last 16 ko is avoided again it's bloody difficult for the fan in me to get overly excited at it all. That said from a purely footballing perspective there's no denying it was a fantastic away performance in Europe with everyone-including the manager-playing their part. Some of the AKB crowing on the previous thread last night, led by our Sky cheerleading friend coleslaw, was truly nauseating. Cole Sky-walker and his partners in crime (I think Jamie son also made an unwelcome disguised return like a miasma) don't have a monopoly on being Arsenal fans. We all are Arsenal fans remember, otherwise why would we be on here? To that extent I enjoyed last night just as much as you Coleslaw, and you'll never convince me otherwise. And get off mbg's case - he's expressing his opinion which I and many others respect. If you don't, then don't read his stuff and stop obsessing about him. You're becoming a bit of a stalker. Still alive and kicking on 3 fronts. 2nd favourites to win the PL at 5/2, Joint favourites at 6/1 to retain the FA Cup & 8th in the betting list to win the Champions League with prices varying from 16/1 to 25/1. The 2-0 win over Bayern Munich seems to have been swept under the carpet by some. Now is not the time to put pressure on getting rid of the manager. Far better to put personal preferences to one side and reunite the fan base. One of the criticisms aimed at AW is his arrogance. In an interview on TalkSport this morning George Graham insisted arrogance is a necessary quality for any top manager. GG would like AFC to but another quality CB but admitted there isn't an obvious candidate out there. He also felt another DM should be brought in to cover Coq's enforced absence. Joel Campbell is growing in confidence with games & we look better balanced with Ramsey replacing Cazorla in midfield. That's my lot for today as I'm out all day. Enjoy the debates.

Crazy game, football, especially where Arsenal are concerned at the moment. Great performance and although it will probably only be delaying the inevitable ko you have to be a proud Gooner today.
