Arsenal Circular 115 – To Buy or Not To Buy

A summary of Arsene Wenger’s options next month

Arsenal Circular 115 – To Buy or Not To Buy

Charlie – Some great moments

Dear Fellow Gunners

As we approach the end of 2015 and the four week transfer window the issue in the minds of many of us is whether Wenger will buy.
Let’s take stock – we are second, five points behind Leicester with a game in hand.
We are in with a shout – we are on everyone’s shortlist of possible title winners – we have conceded fewer goals than any other team – we are scoring as well.
Things can still go wrong – we could fail to cash in – we could drop points, suffer injuries, lose confidence. We still do not quite believe – every defeat/every draw sets off further re-examination of our credentials.
Do we have the resources? – do we have enough confidence?
This is what we turn over twenty times day.
We want it – we can sniff it – we can do it. But will we?

So as Arsene looks at the matches to come up to the FA Cup match against Sunderland he is asking himself the same questions.
Is the mental resolve there? When he looks into the whites of the players eyes does he see winners? – just as Bertie Mee called his squad together in February 1971 and said the Double is on and wondered out aloud whether each and every player has the singularity of purpose to stay focused for every second of every game so Wenger wonders the same.

As I recall the Thursday after the Olympiakos defeat and before the home match against United the squad met on their own and had a no-holds barred meeting. From that session I sense there was a recognition that they had played short of their ability and owed the fans, the manager and their own self-respect a determined challenge. The mind set is there. They want it.

Does the squad need strengthening? – are the players available that can strengthen the squad?
Those are key questions but there is another and this focuses on Wenger – some think he is stubborn and looks to tick too many boxes before bringing in a new player.
Make no mistake – and I am going to upset some who read this 115th Arsenal Circular – we do not know – we have never been coaches or managers. None of us have ever been entrusted with £50m to spend on players. We have opinions but we do not have responsibilities. We are not accountable. We do not know the issues of personality and character and wage levels. We do not have to weigh up the impact of a big new signing on the existing squad and on the youth players who have chosen Arsenal in the belief that they will have a chance to break into the first team squad.

That said in Wenger we do have a coach with the experience to know the market and to know his squad. He is a big man and has lived many challenging situations.
Some will argue he has players coming back from injuries and a motivated squad and a settled dressing room. Or will he say he needs something new – like a Draaxler for example.
A big signing bounces both ways – he helps the club to strengthen the run-in but at the same time his arrival creates jealousies – someone drops down the pecking order.
At the same time Wenger has three players who are close to the end of their Arsenal careers – Arteta, Rosicky and Flamini.
There must be a question mark about Wilshere and his body’s ability to withstand the physical challenge. Coquelin cannot be rushed back – Cazorla, too, is out in effect for the season.
The juniors who are on the fringe – Adeleye and Bielik to name two – will have their chance next season and can’t be expected to shoulder the responsibility of the Champions League, the Premier title and the FA Cup.
So there are conditions to justify addition(s) to the staff.
I know what I don’t know. I have no idea as I have said above which players might fit – that is for Wenger and not for any of us.
He has got us to starting line –we are in with a shout.
Instinctively and emotionally I want to see a big name in defensive midfield – someone who will release Ozil and Ramsey and Theo – not to mention the Ox and Giroud and Sanchez.

Memory Lane – Saturday 17 April 1971 – the Double Year and we are at home to Newcastle United. We had won seven out of seven. Six matches to go. We have beaten Stoke city in the semi-final. Spring sunshine – a cold wind and we want the two points – yes two in those days. Charlie has a dust up with a Newcastle player called Dyson. Hands on throats. Skirmishes all round. We are all shouting. We want blood. It is red raw. No one is going to stand in the way. We want the Double. At the North Bank end the ball is bouncing in the D outside the penalty area – Charlie catches it and blasts it into the net on the half volley. A dramatic goal. Total celebration. Thank you Charlie – you gave us some great moments and the goal against the Geordies was one of them. So powerful – so decisive – so important. Was it Liam McFaul in the Newcastle goal?

All the best

So in that case, why are u mad at him?I'm honestly tired of haintg all our ex-players, they can't all be ****s!The simple fact is we can't compete on & off the pitch, we don't win trophies & we don't pay top wages.I honestly don't begrudge him for not signing a new deal, I wouldn't either. He's an excellent player, he doesn't have too much longer at the top, he needs to do what he feels is right for himself & his family, as selfish as it sounds. We need this vicious circle of losing our best players every season to stop & the only way is by winning trophies. It's on you Arsene. 4 24

ARSENEKNEWBEST 85725 Very few clubs have the financial stability of AFC. Yes our ticket prices are high but we have our own stadium and one day it will be mortgage free. Don't listen to your like-minded mates. Get real and hear what is being said. We are a buying club. We are most people's tip for the title and rumoured to be Guardiola's favoured choice. No need to get vulgar and talk of tongues. Defeat me with argument not insults. JJETPLANE 85728 Not sure what the bible tapping bag means or references to pork. Please let me know MBG 85729 Maybe because I am a new boy on the block I do not follow your "in" talk but you do seem to be from the cynical I've seen it all before" school. John Gage, it amounts to the same thing as far as he's concerned, admitting to needing player/players, what he has not good enough, doing what others (fans)want, giving in, etc, that will never happen, nobody tells OGL what to do, he'd rather take a chance and continue with what he has and blow it, just to try and prove a point he was right, rather than give in and admit he and his philosophy was/is wrong, how many times have we seen it, and we'll see it again.

Funny how Mr Perry manages to make Mr Rose sound like a WOB with his bible tapping bag 'O cliches. Lots to be pulled (who mentioned pork?) from the Envy ticket (a Tory favourite) and notice how the 'weirder than Westie' Mr Perry never mentions football along with 'the envy' with the football being little more than a selling point. Enjoying the knee jerk against Klopp who has been at the Scousers since ...? and makes for amusing swipes from 'fans' who have warmly clap(ped) and tittered over Mr Webster's little 'accidents ' More interesting is the ongoing friendship between Jose and wide eyed Ozil. If he goes to Urd will he entice Ozil and eventually Sanchez? Much to ponder as this circus of a league plods along in the artificial mud .... WESYIE you are so on the ball mate or would that be a whoopee cushion (organic type) beneath as you place your pathological bets. Maybe Jose be back with us soon ...

Bard, good post, it looks like and sounds like TOF is trying to take the plaudits for making it happen and signing him (somebody else must be)what a fraud.

Graham - You said, "We are now the envy of every other club for our financial stability, and our sound hopes for the future". Ha ha ha bloooooooagh...Take your tongue out of the club's fundament for one second and ponder the utter ridiculousness of that comment. You need to stop drinking the Kool Aid mate - we've been the envy of no other supporters for years. Get real - that's just propagandist shi'ite - are you on some sort of retainer from Uncle Arsene?

Bard, Kim kallstrom was my favourite player that season because he scored an all important pen in the fa cup semi, Wenger knows everything, that's why he signed a player with a broken back

WESTLOWER 85696 I don't think he will buy another striker but he will be thinking of a DM unless Chambers has three good games. I don't think Flamini can carry Coquelin's work load. I agree with you about the positive impact of Rosicky and also that JJETPLANE let himself down in 85697 ARSENEKNEWBEST 85700 Actually Oliver Holt did an excellent demolition job on Mourinho in Sundays Mail. Right on the button. Blaming the players was typical of the man. how about his treatment of the Reading Ambulance Staff, the lady doctor, his own substitution of Matic - off/on/off. He is capable, talented but arrogant to the point where his own ego gets in the way of his own abilities. Shame he is staying in UK. One point about the transfer windown - a few years back I thought it was a mistake to allow Diarra to move on. He had not broken into the first team and was frustrated. He left. We needed him in the run-in when new legs and new minds could have carried us over the line - Was it 2008? I raise the point because I prefer Debuchy remains as cover for Hector. GONERCLOLESBOY 85705 You are right about Klopp - it is always best to be low key about the early results of a messiah. Managing in the Premier Division is so difficult. Harder now than ever before for the top coaches. That said I hope Klopp comes through. He is a positive spirit. so is Jose but that is another story OZZIE 85713 Your comment about a two horse race in so many countries is spot on and that is what makes the Premier Division so exciting. We may not be so good at the top end but the standard in the middle and at the bottom has risen immeasurably. W Ham and Palace and Stoke and Watford and Bournemouth are all capable of beating any top four team. Its squeaky bum tie even now JOHN GAGE 85715 A loan signing still pushes someone down the pecking order BARD 85717 You say we did not sign a keeper because "we weren't seriously competing". We sold Adebayor and Toure and Nasri and Fabregas and RVP and Sagna to make ends meat and still ended up in the top four. We punched way above our weight. That is Wenger's achievement. A new stadium, top four, good football. We are now the envy of every other Club for our financial stability and our sound hopes for the future. ARSENAL CIRCULAR

That Newcastle game - I think there were only 3 minutes left when CG scored? A 0-0 would have cost us the league. I think it was McFaul in the Newcastle goal - and Charlie played a one/two off a Newcastle defender to get the half volley. We need the 70/71 spirit in the team - and the crowd - tonight.

Wenger's eulogy at the weekend on the importance of a top class keeper if a club are to win anything rather let the cat out of the bag. Question; so why havent we bought one since Lens retired; ? Answer because we werent seriously competing. Also to those who might be expecting a signing or two in the window I would suggest that the last time we were in the race we bought Kallstrom !!! Roll on tonight.

If Wenger doesn't wish to buy a player for fear of disrupting his squad why not consider a loan signing?

Major test of Wenger coming up. A very getable 10 points out of 12 over Christmas and the window opening up,where he needs a midfielder and a striker. History suggests that he can't pull it off but he will give just enough hope to the masses to justify getting himself a new contract until he's 70. The club won't gamble on waiting till the end of the season on that one. Their bank manager is a precious commodity.

I must admit to becoming a (football) cynic over the years - taking into account all the two-horse races for the title in so many countries that has killed off the spirit of competition. This year is a breath of fresh air - two unfamiliar faces occupying top two spots and the weekly giant killing continuing. I still believe the 5 points lost v WB and Norwich will come back to haunt us. Only wins this weekend and against Liverpool & Chelsea will swing back the balance. Think I'll change my moniker to a more befitting Diogenes. COYG!!

Premier League on a plate, very appropriate name, if TOF doesn't win it this season he deserves sacking immediately the final whistle goes, or in the dressing room at the latest, and his arsed kicked every step he takes out of the ground, with one of those kick me signs then pinned to him. We'll never have a better chance, we've had a few before and this has been said then as well, but not as good as this. But we all know this old fraud of a manager he'll contrive to f**k it up like the others, it's in him, his failed philosophies will see to it along with his ego you can bet on it.

with managers been fired lately due to results, Monday's game with city will finally show us that we are not good enough and the Arsenal board's ambition is just finishing 4th and making money hence why Wenger is always safe. Rather then look at his incompetence in not strengthening the team plus effort in trying to finish 1st. Only at Arsenal...

@Jeff, Enjoy your holiday because we'll be top of the league and favourites to be Champions by the time you return. Then we can look forward to drooling over our new exciting signings in Jan. Leicester will do well to pick up a point in their next two games. Man U & CFC will continue to implode in 2016. We wish you a merry Christmas & a trophy laden New year. Nurse, nurse.......

All false positives these foreign managers are used to knowing they are going. As for Chelsea and United they could both end up being better off with Mourinho leaving one and joining the other. That's football.Wenger has to produce results anyway no matter what happens elsewhere -he is making hard work of doing so though,as usual. Anyway,I'm off on holiday tomorrow so have a nice Xmas everyone - starting with a good result tomorrow night!

I doubt if it's on the minds of many (we've all been here before) and don't think yourself so important (there was one on here who used to do that until he realised he wasn't)your not, so make no mistake your going to upset nobody, we all know by now where your coming from, we've all been here before, he won't, the jig saw we've all been going on about for ten years now, it still won't be completed, and never will with this old out of date manager bumbling about. This just looks like to me you know this too (as a lot of others do also) and it's just excuse making for your messiah again when he doesn't. Do we have enough confidence ? is the mental strength there ? when he looks into the whites of our players eyes ? where are you getting all this out off, we had real players then just like the other times, you've been drinking to much mulled wine, and there you go again trying to big your messiah up, comparing or trying to compare him with real success and a real manager Bertie Mee in our history, with others that haven't even happened yet and probably wont, there's no comparison.

We need a holding midfielder and a forward as Francis and Danny are out to March. I don't believe we can't find a quality holding midfielder in the whole of Europe - the foxes seemed to found one. As for a forward we need a tall quick lad - we will probably sign someone short and slow. What was that Japanese lad we signed who was useless- oh yes park!they don't need to be a name just quality!

Graham - Your stuff doesn't get any better does it? The usual melange of trite cliches, impossible to answer rhetorical questions and cloying wenger apologism. Any one of us could have written that in a matter minutes. Put the right-wing papers away and think up something of your own. Henry Winter, Oliver Holt and Barney Ronay are numpties. Does the squad need strengthening? Of course it bleedin does and the same could be said of any squad unless they have the 25 best players in the world (including those prancing, cheating Catalans because they also have weaknesses). Any manager who is honest will admit the constant need to strengthen their squad - when we were Invincible, our squad would have still been stronger with Kaka, Ronaldinho or whoever else was setting the game alight at that time. And existing squad players thrive on other big names coming in. Otherwise, why would PV, RVP, Fabregas and even Alex Song have left? A bit of quality control please Graham - Bard's recent piece was properly thought provoking and original - your circulars are way below par...

Talking of 1000/1 shots, a Ladbrokes customer placed £5 on Leicester at 1000/1 to be top of PL at Christmas. Well done that man or woman. To think it's only 2 weeks since mug pundit Micky Quinn tipped Liverpool to be PL Champions, calm down, calm down.....

@JJ Keep yourself away from the real world as you'll get hurt. If you believe both AFC & Citeh will finish outside of the top 4 you've become a certifiable nut! There's opinions and there's crass stupidity. You fit well in the latter. The bookies will be pleased to offer you 1000/1 on your death wish coming true. Players like Draaxler would not want to go to a corporate brand with so little footballing ambition. Wonder what the odds on the two playing Monday night football for Ruupert being out of the top four come May are? No mention of young Willock tells me you are not quite on the ball and no doubt Weenger will farm him out to Charlton and then some one gets injured or Sanchez joins JM at Utd and Aarsenal finish er 4th and .... yo ho ho bluud ....

Getting in new signings will depend on how many injured players remain out during the January transfer window. We already know that AW won't buy for the sake of buying and as always the 'right' players have to be available. Was Schniederlin a good miss? He isn't a regular starter in a struggling Man U side at present. Cazorla's absence has been compensated by restoring Ramsey to his best position. Doubtless, Chambers will be tried out over the Christmas period to see if he shapes up in the DM role. A new striker will be needed should the prognosis on Welbeck remain pessimistic. All other positions are well covered, with Rosicky's predicted return in late Jan giving more options to the attack. He can be used in short bursts to rest the tired & fatigued. The bookies reckon there is a 81.7% (2/9) chance that this season's PL Champions will be playing at the Emirates on Monday evening.
