Jamie Vardy – A missed opportunity or not?

Recalling some past striker targets that did not come off

Jamie Vardy – A missed opportunity or not?

Well folks the Vardy to Arsenal saga has come to an end with Vardy deciding to stay at Leicester. It seems to me that he was using us to get a bigger better deal at Leicester. I am not too disconsolate as he is 29 has had one great season and the Euros have shown that he struggles against packed defences, which we faced a lot of last season.

The Vardy saga brings to mind previous Arsenal transfer sagas involving strikers who did not join us.

1) Kerry Dixon.
In February 1988 Chelsea were selling Kerry Dixon for the sum of £1.2 million. We were in for him with West Ham. Dixon wanted to go to Arsenal but Ken Bates did not want to sell him so he stayed at Chelsea.

2) Tony Cottee.
In the pre season before 1988/89 we offered £2.5 million for Cottee, but he decided to go to Everton. It was most likely that they offered him more money. He scored a hat trick on the opening day for Everton as did Alan Smith for us away at Wimbledon. Smudge went on to win the golden boot and Paul Merson whose place was at threat from Cottee won Young Player of the Year. That season didn’t end too badly either at Anfield.

3) Frank McAvennie.
During the 1988/89 season Frank wanted to return to London and we saw him as the man to get the goals to secure the title. He chose West Ham, didn’t score for the rest of the season and got relegated. Apparently he was offered more money from West Ham.

4) Tony Cascarino.
During the 1989/90 season Cascarino was leaving Millwall and chose Aston Villa over us. Again George Graham did not offer him the cash that Villa did. The following season Kevin Campbell emerged and we won the title.

5) Chris Sutton.
In 1994 we were in for Chris Sutton for £5 million but moneybags (at the time) Blackburn secured his services. He won the league that year at Blackburn and later cost us a Champions League place when he chased Nigel Winterburn down with the ball after Blackburn returned possession to in a game at Hiughbury.

6) Patrick Kluivert.
Apparently we were trying to sign Kluivert after the 1998 World Cup but the deal didn’t happen. The following season we signed some French lad called Henry who wasn’t too bad!!!!!!

8) Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
In 2000 a young striker from Malmo came to Highbury believing he was about to sign for Arsenal. He was asked to take part in a trial match and the comment “Zlatan doesn’t do trials” is legendary. (Ed’s note, according to Ibra’s autobiography, the comment was actually made by his agent. Ibra was happy to put his boots on and show his stuff!)

7) Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
In 2001 we were having talks with Martin Keown’s best mate and he declined to come to Arsenal because Arsene said that he would be back up to Henry and he believed that he should be a starter.

8) Nicolas Anelka.
After the move to the Emirates, Wenger was considering re-signing Anelka but decided to place his face in Lord Bendtner.

9) Gonzalo Higuain.
In 2013 we were linked all summer with Higuain but he chose Napoli who were flush with cash from the sale of Edinson Cavani

10) Luis Suarez.
The £40 million and a pound fiasco. Say no more.

So that is a by no means exhaustive list of lucky escapes and missed opportunities. What category will Vardy fall into? As was the case with Kluivert not coming and us signing Henry the following year, there is often a better option around the corner. Who will that be this pre-season?

Website Admin (Mike) thanks very much not a problem, i should have known better and realised it was from someone else (not to hard to know/guess who)especially as you always put your name in brackets, i'd forgotten what i'd put in it myself and was racking my brains as i'd never dream of saying/typing anything like that.

mbg - The comment previously posted under Website Admin was not from us but came from a source well known for using different names and making homophobic comments. It's therefore been removed as has your reply as it was not necessary and we would not want others to believe we had made the accusations you defended. This is why we rather have any queries regarding posts made by email. I don't recall the original post which was removed. There were a number taken down in the last few days which referred to the referendum and made political points as this is not a forum for that subject. It may have therefore been that you'd passed comment on this in your post.

What do expect with 5 spuds in the side although if they had stopped the game after 5 minutes we would have won, also did anyone notice that the ref looked very dodgy. I havent had time to go through the tape of the game but I thought he was definitely anti-Arsenal !! Here's a thought for the next England manager.... take a bow Arsene Wenger. He would be perfect for the job

I would like to complain about commentators using the term "Sunday League defending" when discussing England's performances at the recent Euros. As a Sunday League player for over 14 years can I categorically state that my Sunday team would never have let in those two goals last night. The first Iceland goal our midfield stoppers would never have lost the first ball and even if they had our goalkeeper would have "wiped out" the Icelandic scorer before he ever got near the ball, as for the second, our keeper would have treated the shot as a back pass, played a bit of keepie uppie and passed the ball out to yours truly at full back who would have launched a devastating counter attack. Just wanted to put a bit of balance back into the debate about England.

WABATTD - Spot on. There'll be jingoistic views-a-plenty to reflect the wider national mood among casual racists. I'm not saying he's one of course, but Ian Wright, Wright Wright's (who I admire greatly as a player) comments last night about how England need an English manager were as appalling as they were lazy. There's an acknowledged lack of people from minority backgrounds who are managers in England already without people like Wrighty saying that the chief criterion for the job be that the person is English. I don't know what fat sam's politics are (although I doubt he's a revolutionary socialist) but he would be the farage-esque choice. Wrighty is evidently a keen England fan - he should think beyond the usual prejudices though if he wants them to change for the better. Depressing all round. And it doesn't augur well for the spudz next season - their players looked p*ss-poor, almost as bad as nicotine jacko!

A few things you're sure to hear in the next few days: Grass roots. Root and branch reform. Too many foreigners in PL. Bring the kids through. Big Sam. Passion, commitment, guts, pride. Pounds shillings and pence. 1966. Bring back national service. They don't like it up 'em. Fish and chips, none of that foreign muck.

Shearer has just told it straight on MOTD, inept, embarrassing, hodgson didn't know what he was doing were just some of the words statements bandied about by him and the panel, (and they were all English men too)where have we heard and seen those words and statements before ? and used against ? at least hodgson has/had the decency to do the right thing after an embarrassment and humiliation unlike the old past it manager we have.

I genuinely think Feo would have made a difference tonight. But then again, I have been taking some incredibly strong hallucinogenic drugs. The burning question is: would you take woy as afc manager over ogl? The length and relative fluency of woy's written sad adieu made me think he'd prepared it before the game which is breathtaking. Last week's referendum may have passed but their are still plenty of massed debaters in the ingerland set-up. Over and out of europe.

Lads - I don't know if you have ITV switched on tonight but Arsenal are playing Stoke in what I can only assume is a pre-season game. We're in our thirty fourth kit for this season which is a white and grey affair while Stoke, mysteriously, are in all blue. Wenger is still old an out of touch but his face is even more crumpled and he's a bit more rotund. That's what you get for using cheap French titty implants instead of proper botox I guess. Anyway, all much of a much-ness - we're being out-muscled and out thought/fought by a bunch of cloggers. Oh, wait...is that vaping Jack coming on? Ha ha ha.

Good points mbg, I only support non Brit sides that I havehad a punt on ,other than the jocks, who are irrelevant anyway at International level these days , due to all of their kids playing on X-Boxes in their bedrooms at home instead of kicking footballs around in the park like the older ones used to do . I though ROI might nick a draw against les blues over 90 minutes and it looked good for the first half but the French improved a bit on what they had produced up until then to beat the Irish. Regarding what clubs players play for England this is another irrelevance the fact that they play for a certain club doesn't always mean that they support it.All a bit silly anyway. Ask Harry Kane about it!

WABATTD, i'm not sure if your aiming that post at me or not, but i'll reply anyway, first of all nobody is asking you to support ROI, i'm certainly not anyway, i'm referring to Northern Ireland, there's a big difference, (it's part of Great Britain who I class as my Country just the same as you and every other assuming English man living in Great Britain does) who I support and am referring to, and I have asked nobody to support them either, in fact I agree with you why should others support another country,(would we support spurs for example) I always support England as N Ireland are not usually in these comps but as they were this time I was supporting them along with England AND Wales and will continue to do so now N, Ireland are out(although I don't hold out much hope either way) because who/they are also part of my Country Great Britain. Going back to my post that was removed it was only a post congratulating little N, Ireland (part of Great Britain which I assume is your country also) and they're fans on they're humble achievements in France nothing more nothing less, if English and Welsh fans come on and do the same are their posts going to be removed also ? I can only assume it was off topic of the article above, but as all the talk, posts, and Articles are about the Euros I find that hard to comprehend, so it will be interesting to find out, as yet I haven't.

Being an all for Euro man I find it easy to be neutral and have noticed how both Liverpool and Tottenham are being primed to dominate the PL. You only have to watch who the advertisers are courting. If we throw in Chelski and City for obvious reasons we have a solid top four for the oncoming decade. Leicester may have a say as will Everton and with it practically confirmed the departures of Sanchez, Ozil and Ramsay Arsene will do well to remain top six. Perhaps he will say 'if someone said you would be a top six team in the EPL for a 1000 years with an index linked pay packet I would say yes the speeeerittt ....' Little point which has got me for 20 years is how Wenger is so unintrested in watching other clubs in the skin but prefers a dark shed (familiar) to watch erm videos of them .... Just hit me why he is so uncomfortable in the dug out (see zips, hands beneath arse panic psychology apparel) - we see a man in abject fear while his children (players) are left to fend with any leadership. Anyway - love to see the sun reading leave crowd in total confusion as nothing will appear to change over the next decade bar the price of a thick white loaf which will cost 42 pounds .... dopes thought a brave new world would begin last Friday lol! ps Belgium have grown in this comp and now look like a team Arsene could only dream about. What a bout Ozil and Hazard together? That's entertainment.

I find myself in something of a moral conundrum and have sent an email to the chief of the unsullied on Untold in the hope of further clarification. Is it possible to support Engerland and also hope that the 5 spuds in the side have stinkers? Or is it a betrayal of Arsenal that I support Engerland unequivocally spuds and all. I am holding a referendum amongst Arsenal fans to find out the right way. On the subject of Vardy. I know he has signed for Leicester but cant we offer the same as Leicester+£1. What a terrible tournament?! Worse than 2004. At least back then we had some goals and drama. Must say the Copa America has been riveting. Football the way it should be played. Team gets the ball , passes it around to try and score- fast-paced, exciting and sometimes inaccurate. The other team does the same, no holding back and defending for their lives (Look at every team apart from Brazil and USA). It's like two boxers slugging it out with flair and passion- no mucking about. Stark contrast to Euros which has either one team defending with "grit" and "speerrit" and the other team stroking the ball around to maintain possession like that is the point of the game. I know which games I'd like to watch.

Missing a penalty in a sudden death shoot-out is a bit like making love to a beautiful woman - you fondle the ball as you place it carefully in the grassed area. You withdraw slowly always keeping your eye on the goal in front of you. You take two hesitant steps forward pretending at the same to rush. You shoot, and spray your ball just outside the area in which you intended to score. You endure agony and hold your head tenderly as the ball harmlessly misses the netted target of your desires. Your face says it all as you wish that your manager had pulled you off in extra time.

Bard, Untold's "Vardy Watch" correspondent has been rushed back from France to investigate the referendum figures. With lack of corruption to explain the result, he will use his statistical magic to show that the country actually voted to stay in the EU. Turmoil on Untold. The simple message of if you love your club sign a petition for a second referendum is not getting through to some of the flock. For a site that uses statistics and graphs so often, it's amazing how the simple concept of one number being greater than another number is totally misunderstood. It's like a game of football. The team that scores the most goals is the winner. The team that ends up with the most points in a season wins the league. Now we know the AKB's struggle to grasp this concept, and introduce shots on goal and possession stats in to the fray, and somehow worked out that Arsenal actually went undefeated and won the league last season by a clear 20 points. Well we shouldn't be surprised then, that over on Untold, 52% isn't actually better than 48%. But where does the blame lie? The refs? The media? The corrupt Sepp Blatter? With no one to blame, I feel the leadership at Untold can't possibly remain in power. I await one of the flock to call for no-confidence motion before anarchy takes over the site.

It's anyone's guess whether Vardy would have been a success at Arsenal. What is inescapable is that Arsenal, plus an extra £1 million p/a was not a sufficiently attractive option for a player to leave Leicester City.

  52. Hiccups

    Jun 25, 2016, 15:57 #90441

Well guys and gals, it's that time of year again. Yes, it's petition time. It's official, and it's from Untold, so it must be true. It transpires that the referendum result is harmful for Arsenal, and wil give more power to the corrupt FA. So if you love Arsenal, sign the petition for a second referendum. These Untoldees are just Arsenal through and through. Not worried about there own personal circumstances of leaving the EU, their first thought is of Arsenal. So thoughtful. The millions that Wenger, Kroenke, Gazidis and the fairies on the pitch take out the club in return for finishing nowhere near the champions year in year out could be jeopardised. Our chances of signing more players like Sanogo that can make a healthy living out of the club could also be jeopardised. Therefore, we need another referendum. Why weren't Cameron or Corbyn telling us Arsenal would be worse off. I bet Boris knew this, and that it's just another open cheque book for corruption for the FA. So whether you were in or out, for the good of Arsenal, sign the petition for another referendum. I'm sure the country will all vote to stay in now everyone's aware Arsenal are being harmed. My question is whether we won't be able to compete with Leicester again because of this vote? Anyway, when Stoke win the league next year, we can all point to the unfair advantage that they gained from the UK leaving the EU.

There should be a blueprint for all those buying a football club entitled 'How not to run a transfer policy', based on Arsenal Football Club post Dein. Mbg - Nice if true, but I suspect that Wenger's legacy will affect the club in a negative way well after he has vacated that awful red seat and the unzippable anorak. One could easily imagine him remaining in some spoiling role upstairs (I think they're officially called directors of football). In such a case, I could not imagine him sitting by like a lofty patrician in a toga and laurel wreath while some young(er) buck starts the difficult job of completely reforming the club's players, ethos, staff and relationship with the fans and media. He'll be micro-managing his baws off driving the new guy absolutely ker-ay-zee. It's not often that you're so optimistic about the Arsenal mate (must be something to do with the brilliant job that Michael O'Neill and the Norn Ireland team are doing!) but I reckon it's going to be a long and hard job that may take more than one new manager. Having said that, when we do, finally, get a new person in the job, I'm looking forward to changing my moniker from arseneknewbest to managerXknows best - anyone'll do. All the best for the game tonight - I reckon if NI win, you'll be saying Weng should stay!!!

Alsace, spot on, nothing matters this season only getting rid of wenger, it's a non season, a write off before we start, a non starter, it's just going to be the same as all the rest (and we all know it)the most important thing about this season is seeing the back of this old fraud of a manager, and then we really will be good to go.

Pleased for Vardy and Leicester. Vardy would have been a brilliant signing LAST year but Monsieur didnt spot him. Wenger would have used him to try and save his skin, and would have ruined him in the process. Nothing matters but getting rid this season. Vardy would have given us some fun, but not the league.zed

There'll be no major signings we all know it, ( probably no more signings at all and indeed most likely) but the AKB wengerites just won't be told, they don't want to believe it, they just want to keep on believing (and we know where that has got them) but like always they'll be met by reality sooner than later, then no doubt the next thing we'll hear from TOF and his AKB apologists is, we're good to go. You really couldn't make it up.

No real issue with Vardy not signing, a smoke screen from Wenger, just a half baked attempt to keep the fans happy/silent. Cant really see Wenger doing anymore business, so groundhog day awaits, but we live in hope....Viva la revolution.

SKG, I guess then OGL will revert to his favoured and trusted currency once again 40 B+H.

Thank god Billy Wright managed to sign Joe Baker otherwise he could have been on your list. Vardy having a great season in the PL does not make him a great player, he would not be a fit for our style of play and is better suited to Leicester. To get a decent forward in today's silly markets would be a price Arsene would never pay, especially now the pound has dropped against the Euro. No I have a feeling we could end up with Sturridge as a part exchange with Theo.

The Vardy saga hasn't come to an end, because it never started, it was like all the rest we've heard over the last ten eleven years spin/lies and even still some don't get it blaming others, so it's done it's job brilliantly, ivan and TOF must be laughing they're balls off.

Vardy at his peak and just too good for serial failures. Well done Jamie and now for Ramsay, Ozil and Sanchez to do a VP .....

Vardy is old a one season wonder and not certain to perform like last season. A lucky miss for us I would say. We need a world class striker but fat chance with OGL doing the buying.

At least we - as gooners won't be too disrupted by the referendum result. After all, we've been put out of europe every season for the past 16 years thank to Monsieur Wenger! There might be a change to the way transfers are conducted for young euro players in future. I guess that they'll need work permits a la sanchez/arshavin etc. and will need to prove that they have a number of foreign caps for their team. That potentially means no more finds like Fabregas, but it also means no more Sanogos either so swings and roundabouts... Nozzer some good points there - it almost makes you wonder if Weng is as phobic about splashing the cash for good attackers as he is for defenders. I'd add the failure to sign Julian Draxler, albeit an attacking midfielder as another example of weng's parsimony/stupidity.
