Gunners undefeated since opening day - continue to believe

Arsenal Circular 157 – The Armistice Day tribute, the Derby and the international break

Last Post before the Derby kick off

“On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day...”. It may almost seem disrespectful on this day to be writing about Arsenal and if we allow our memories to recall the terrible happenings of the First World War we can quickly envisage how in November 1916 so many fellow Gunners gave their lives in service to their country. The clothes they wore; the songs they sung; the lifestyles they lived – all so different one hundred years on but quite a few of those soldiers enjoyed their time supporting Woolwich Arsenal in Plumstead until 2013 or The Arsenal until the outbreak of War. The pre-match tribute before the AFC/THFC game to two players – one from The Arsenal and one from THFC – was part of that umbilical chord that provides a permanent link with past Arsenal fans who have come together to support our Club.

The tribute was so well done – the silence was emotional and the Last Post triggered instant respect from all present for the terrible sacrifice made by so many fans over so many years in pursuit of service and dedication. Well done to Ivan Gazidis and his team – they performed the Remembrance to perfection. I actually preferred that Clattenberg allowed us a few more moments of silence after the bugler has completed his playing. The silence of 60,000 was so special.

Now onto present matters. Football gives us ups and downs in a season and today I sense we are all a little down. We drew against THFC when we needed to win. We lost the opportunity to go top and instead fell to fourth place. Not for the first time we missed a chance. THFC played well – they have good players and a good manager. They are more solid than for many years. Yes, they should have pipped us for second place but they have stayed together and are determined to win the League. But so are we. We are determined and at the same time we are frustrated. We were not good enough to win. A draw was a fair result and THFC players left the pitch in better spirit than AFC players.

The fans are the same. Prior to the game we were doing well and THFC were faltering not to say tottering. Spurs fans really thought we were going to eat them alive but we know not to predict, not to assume. Derbies are Derbies and THFC were infused with a determination to take at least a draw. We were good. We played well. We kept at it. We panicked for the penalty and we could have conceded another just as we could have scored another.

But we wanted to make this match a statement. We wanted assert ourselves over our closest rivals and we wanted to go into first place. We drew – we did not win. We went fourth – not first. So we are down. Just down - not out. There are rumoured injuries to Bellerin and Alexis and it is November. For some, bad news is an opportunity to come out with all the usual moans about Arsene. Bat them away like you do an irritating fly. Instead continue to believe.

We have been playing well. We are unbeaten the Premier League since the opening day. Xhaka and Mustafi have added some competitive steel. The problem is the lack of matches and the intervention of the internationals. Matches in different competitions come so quickly. There is much to discuss; incidents to review; points to accumulate; cup progress to enjoy and then - nothing for two weeks. No opportunity to erase the memory of the home draw against THFC. It hangs around like an upset stomach. There is no quick fix – no bicarbonate of soda. We just have to wait another week for the game at Old Trafford.

Social media is quiet; the press is quiet; we are quiet. It really is down time and then Trump won to add to the clouds hovering above and India are accumulating runs. But two late wickets today for our bowlers injected spirit into our players and in the same way AFC will come again. There is talent and determination and we remain competitive so nil desperandum. Stay strong. Let’s see what the future brings against PSG and Southampton in the League Cup and Man U in the League.

Let me conclude with a dip into the past. I had thought of recounting the first sending-off I witnessed on 30 January 1954 but bearing in mind the WW1 context I saw recently a photo taken in April 1948 at a home game v Chelsea which showed the only three living players of Woolwich Arsenal’s first professional team of 1891 – Bill Julian, Gavin Crawford and John McBean. Elderly men they may be but they are watching the match with all the intensity of seasoned pros. We won the League that season of 1947-48 but lost that day to CFC 0-2. Interesting bit of history:- the Club grew in the 1890s because of military re-armament triggered more by the French than by the Germans. The Arsenal Armament factory grew in numbers – the numbers of employees increased and the football team recruited more players. How ironic that at the current time – the 11 November and the poppies and Remembrance Sunday - we become aware that it was the manufacture of the weapons of war that played an important part in the late 19th Century development of our football team.

I can only presume Leekey is at a Furry convention due his absence from the site. He is Yiffing. I shall allow you to draw your own conclusions, suffice to have why you would want to do that Dressed in a raccoon costume ? Leekey you need help.

Jason, pains hard to cope with especially haemoids at your age, early 20's i'd guess, we all know Finsbury is a troll (and have done for a few years now) he's even admitted it himself, where have you been ? just getting out of canon club ? and a 100% wengerite.

Can you hear KC sing? I can't hear a f..... thing" repeat to fade. "That's the way, uh-huh uh-huh, I like it". Meanwhile, Jason (as he's called today) has sloped off across the southwold marshes to look for earthworms and other assorted victims.

Jason = Dunce = Jamee. Go to the back of the class. Read my last post. A troll would not even have heard of eddie mcgoldrick let alone have seen him score for the Arsenal. Talk about powder puff. C'mon then Jase - give us your credentials - and don't talk about southwold, norfolk and not being liked by your kids. We deserve better!

KC - 'kin 'ell mate. You sound a little shrill for a Sunday morning. Put some Lionel Ritchie on the turntable instead of that midwest disco sound that you perfected in the late 70s! If you'd FULLY read my short post, you'd have gleaned that I listened to said game on my gramophone. I'd just got back from coaching my kid's team in some sleety weather, and did not fancy a murdoch-inspired sky performance in my local so-called boozer with a load of non-mancunian manure fans. You sound rather insecure KC, as if you want to prove that you're the biggest gooner in the wholest, widest world. Very mature. Unless you were there that night for the 7-0 in Liege (when a certain E McGoldrick was one of the scorers, or were at THOF on new years eve when Jensen scored despite that loss against QP ha ha ha, then you're a half supporter. We don't need any more phoney warmongers in the world mate. "Oooooh, that's why I'm easy, easy like a Sunday morning..."

Arseneknewbest - Did you watch the game or to busy playing with your train set. Posts that don't talk football are pointless unless of course your head is up your own arse. Real gooners want to discuss the game, the club, the issues the weaknesses not trivial nonsense. A few posts of criticism by the same troll!!!!!

KC - Thanks mate for the warm words. And there was me thinking you'd want to "shake, shake, shake" with keyboard rage after you'd been criticised on here by a few people. And just like the Shopkeeper in Mr Benn, up pops Finsbury last night to tell us how the cockerel jockies will "see off" wengo this season. I notice you're no longer talking about a certain 55/56 year wait being over. Say it ain't so Joe!

Leekey - Report required on the match please, you did travel up BTW? I'm worried about the 40,000 silent Wenger Choir who stand side by side with you. The sheer quietness of them could off put the players. I wondered if anybody on this site has showbiz connections ( and not Jamies Jimmy Savile mates) who maybe could connect up Gareth Malone and Leekey? Repeat after me Leekey, There's only one Simeone, one Simeone, there's only one Simeone!

Going forward: need to have midfielders push out and press the wide attacking players when we don't have the ball. VERY IMPORTANT as the flip from looking forward to create - Dto running backwards and sideways is a high penalty.WIN THE CHUFFING MIDFIELD ARSENAL. . Anyways I am happy with the point blah blah effing blah!!!!!!!

Arseneknewbest great post the way you have discussed the game very impressed. MBG or are you the above dreamland comes to mind if you believe typing on hear means your vocal go to the stadium and voice your opinions. As for the game Ramsey shocking Oziil and Walcott invisible, Jenkinson simply not good enough, another big game where we don't turn up. Wenger to soft the players on easy street, mentally weak, no one in the team prepared to bollock the players when they play fantasy football in dangerous areas. Just not tough enough it's mental not ability that is the weakness.

Only joy to take out of a very poor game, was stopping the mancs and Maureen taking all 3pts - Ozil, Ramsey & Walcott were all very poor. very positives to take out of the game, but good work from the Ox & giroud for the goal.

Good point. Two awful teams slug it out. How crazy was playing Sanchez. We are on course for a 4th place onwards and sideways. Think today nailed any idea that we are contenders.

Sanchez played well first half until he realised that the others weren't on the same plane. I rate Ozil but the dude disappeared 2nd half. Pisspoor performance but hey we'll take a point up there. Although all three were there if we wanted it bad enough.

Bonzo, and for a while there I thought KC too, but to be fair to KC he seems a decent lad and knows and realises wengers times up too and wants him out, just not as vocal as some of us and unfortunately that's what's keeping TOF in the job. wenger out.

Woeful performance. Deserved to lose. Will take a point, but no way we will be winning this league. See Theo is back to his best, giving the ball away, running down blind alleys etc. So much for his comments earlier this season, I'm back and all that. Two decent games he had wasn't it?! And Sanchez looked spent most of the game.

  22. DW Thomas

    Nov 19, 2016, 18:46 #94788

Been telling people for years, Ramsey is not good enough. Iwobi should still be starting. Sanchez looked tired and Xhaka should have started too. Ramsey runs around a lot, but out in the wing he is way out of place. He wants to be like Ozil, a silky passer. Not that Ozil had a great game either, but Santi out is a big miss. Giroud is growing on me. I am a huge France fan and he never seemed good enough to lead the line for a top international team. But, he is coming on and scoring big goals. Wenger loves Ramsey, let Jack go, and can't seem to get his team's to push on and dominate. Walcott had another lackluster game. I will always take stick for thinking Jack was better than Rambo. Jack could have developed into a real top player under someone like Pep or Simeone. We are missing Bellerin big time. Wenger continues to persist with the old guard that is mediocre when there are better options. It's not that I dislike Rambo even, but he just doesn't have much vision and does seem to like defending all that much. Not as bad as Theo, but when we have a talent like Iwobi who, pushes the play forward, has great skill, it makes no sense why Ramsey plays over him unless it's because he is a favorite. The last of the youth experiment with Theo who never really became world class.

    Nov 19, 2016, 18:16 #94787

Decent result, woeful performance. Another non event from Arsenal at Old Trafford to go alongside similar displays in recent years. The lack of creativity in midfield was there for all to see. Ozil and Walcott anonymous - not sure what game Theo was speaking about when I heard his post match interview. Need Santi back sharpish and why no Xhaka in the starting line up?

Hello Arsene Knew Best and MBG always good to have a chat, particularly as I know that poor Squeek will be furiously angry as he only has his split personality Lee AFC to talk to. Now Squeek if we look at your growing delusion that there is a silent choir of 40,000 Wenger fans backing your every utterance. I'll just say this. If Arsenal manage to do a very good sales pitch to Simeone and he accepts?!? That silent choir reduces by 39,995. Leaving just you, Attwood, Walter Afrikaan Broekx, freakboy Jamieson and the indescribably boring Round Robin sorry I mean Circular. Bonzo - we call that cheeky but talentless chappy "oily merde" in the Arseneknewbest household. Coincidentally, I gather that oleaginous stool-based sensation is something that Leekie suffers from after his sojourns at the home of the suffolk strangler - no wonder he sought his john hancock . Sadly for brave Leekie, the symptoms can persist for up to 90 days.

KC - You don't half talk testicles, cowson. I preferred you when you were still with the sunshine band. I gather the split happened because you talked so much tripe and would not "give it up, give it up, baby give it up". Listened on the gramophone to that tosh, most reluctantly I hasten to add. Weng will be typically biscuit-ersed after the game, but some satisfaction to be gained from the portugeezer's near self-combustion. Could not happen to two nicer people as they sit alone tonight - one in a minimalist north london mansion, the other in the Manchester equivalent of the linton travel tavern. A-haaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Right_ off to a proper match now at three. Mud, rain, glory perhaps. Tough one, Love it. JJetplane- my apologies I hurried to respond to KC who oddly has issues with a Wenger out message whilst realising Wengers complete weakness. Your words are very kind. In the spirit of inclusiveness fighting the bitter and failing Leekey and Jamerson's pathetic claims of greater Arsenal support whilst they glory in its failure. I shall add the ✊ a fine gesture adopted in Northern Soul to recognise the inclusivity of the music, the origin of the music and the spirit of good relations. No man shall come into this site and claim some sort of superiority of support simply because they support the status quo of a failing regime. Bard, Wenger teams cannot park the bus he won't they can't. Some of the anti Wenger pathetic childish comments on here make you want to puke (not you), especially as they are written by the same people using different names and are by individuals that never go to games. That said our visits to OT and the bridge are perfect examples of everything wrong about Wengers Arsenal, we roll over, don't perform and I sit here expecting to lose today. I could accept losing if we perform but when was the last time we played well at either venue in the league. It's a mental thing and sadly Wengers DNA of the team. We are to open and unless your Barca you have to have a security defensively if you want to a title. There is a happy medium between Wengers globetrotters and Joses anti football bore fest. Just still think we lack a devil offensively and security defensively so see nothing less than a win. Hope I'm so wrong.

Ron: Imagine what a "club level" would have made of the Fairs Cup final - the masses swarming onto the stage after the match, actors in red & white being hoisted on the shoulders of the proletariat, they would have spat out their after dinner brandy and blamed it all on the abolition of national service! Thank god I have my memories of that April night - as for today, our full backs lack pace, Rooney has a point to prove and The Special One will be picking at our weaknesses. I hope we park 2 buses because if we play an expansive game we will get beat.

GS, tbh since we played and beat Chelsea,in a rather strange game of, to use an old adage, two halves ,they have looked more like title winners than we have. I can't see any sign of any improvement on last season regarding us but the chavs are obviously doing better.Let's see how we get on at the Bridge. I agree with Bard that Sancho should be rested I have no idea what Wengo is going on about with all of the nonsense he is coming out with about him not trusting Sancho to tell the truth if he is fit to play. It all looks like typical Wengo( yawn) dithering not knowing what to do for the best bullsh*t. This is typical Wengo( yawn) par for the course when the pressure is on.We will have to see though if Jose can conjure up something because he has not looked like the flash Portugeezer of old but hey if anyone can give another struggling manager a lift then that that man is our genius Wengo!

He needs a rest. We need to go to OT and park the bus and maybe sneak a win but a draw away from home isnt a bad result. What we dont need is Sanchez injured for 6 weeks. Expect him to start on the bench and then Wenger throw him on if things arent going well.

Tony Evans, absolutely it would be great to get one over man yoo at last, and the law of averages at least tells us we should, and I quite fancy us to actually in my wisdom but I said the same against the spuds, and after all we've got our biggest obstacle of all, wenger.

bba: Granted , we were all happy after the Chelsea win, but we have had games like that for the last 10 seasons, where we look genuine PL contenders, but then sadly tail off when the pressure is on, anyone who thinks after beating Chelsea that all is well is slightly deluded, the last 10seasons tell us otherwise...I, as much as anyone what us to smash the Manc tomorrow, but its just very hard to see us doing that, I'l take a 1 -0 ........COYG

In reference to the Chelsea game bonzo, and in fairness to leek, everyone went home happy and not much of the 'we want change' was apparent. The 'stay at home fans' appear to now start realising that there's life in the old fox yet. But it's a struggle for them to admit it.

Just thought I'd let you know Arsenal 3 - Chelsea 0 - did we here there's only One Arsene Wenger? Did we hell as like, not a peep sunshine. So your 40,000 others are fence sitters at best and a fair majority are grumbling big time. They'd rather not abuse Wenger at the match and that is their perogotive. Doesn't mean their Wengerphiles like you.

Jeff - It's early days yet but if wengo has finally mastered the zen zip technique, then I recommend that our highly esteemed tv channels henceforth turn their attention to the torrent that is weng's incessantly runny hooter. A tsunami of snot that cascades in all weathers, normally onto his sleeve or hands and which I suspect is wiped on bouldy's coat when the cameras aren't looking. If gazidis ever has his wits about him some extra cash could be made by flashing up ads for kleenex, fisherman's friends and nasal tampons which are being launched in asano colours this year. Still, knowing weng, he'll get to OT this saturday and f*ck up the zip again...as he'll also f*ck up his tactics. You just know it ain't going to end well. Manure are as poor as they've been at any stage in the last 25 years, but you just know they'll conjure up a result. Mucus-gate awaits.

AKB, there is a video on youtube of Wengo( yawn) desperately fiddling with his sleeping bag zip and looking rather stressed out doing so it's had multi-thousands of hits.I guess that someone told him about his zip fiddling becoming a national joke for everyone other than the AKB's to have a laugh about so it looks like he has now got it sorted.Shame about his other foibles though such as recently sitting anxiously and grim faced fretting away fiddling with a piece of string in his sweaty paws. Anyway, as I said before, surely he must be due a win over Jose who does not have the sort of team that he has had in the past, but this is Wengo( yawn) and we know only too well how he is capable of messing up good opportunities when they are there to be taken.

    Nov 17, 2016, 16:03 #94730

Jeff - There was a moment in the first half of the spurs game when the "action" cut to wengo the benchman. He reached down and grabbed a corner of his natty new grey (yawn) puma jacket; aligned it in the zip; and perfectly executed a doing-up manoeuvre. I was speechless - textbook zip work by the former football manager. It rather reminded me of the way Jamee slots the billiard ball gag into Leekie's trembling mouth on those special caravan nights. The "common tater" missed it (I suspect cameramen and editors still regard it as essential coverage), but now - with the new jacket - it might become a little passe. And who said you couldn't teach and old manager new tricks? I've not checked but it could be on youtube. Just like Corbyn is dominating the hapless Theresa these days Jeff, it seems weng no longer has coat-o-phobia. You couldn't make it up right?

The weather is turning chilly and wet so will Wengo( yawn) be wearing his sleeping bag at OT and is there any chance that he has found out the secret of zipping it up properly is the question. No doubt the snoods and gloves will be on for our little technichians Theo and Chambo will have to make sure that they warm up properly so as to avoid getting nasty strains in their littkle legs legs . I see the game as being a defining one for never having beaten Jose in a proper game Wengo( yawn) he really does need to put that embarrassing stat to bed this can't go on surely any longer>?If he loses though the usual suspects GoonerRon and lee KFC will be at it demanding that Wengo( yawn) must stay because without him the club would cease to exist. Look up there is it a moustachioed porn star a plane or a strange bid,no it's Silent Stan ! He needs that Champions League dosh that Wengo brings in every season. Good old Arsene.

Peter - in fairness, you wouldn't really expect Club Level to be included would you?. They are a separate facility of seating so i believe and arent really part of the main tranch of conventional Season tickets. Theyre the best views in that Stadium by far. Silent as the grave up there. They sit there on their lap tops and tablets, business meetings on going, others reading their novels. Girls with their Dads and sugar dads with their shades on looking around everywhere but the pitch to see if their being noticed or perved over. A good few are up there having a nap, to sleep the whisky off and the food they forced down 2 to 3 hrs pre kick off. Others just loiter in the bar areas reading the Daily Mail and the Times nonchalantly and occasionally messing with their phones. That Club Levels unique to AFC in the greed fest PL. Footballs almost totally irrelevant up there. Welcome to modern Arsenal PLC. There was once a football Club over there.

Just watched BBC neWs at 8:00am they stated that football tickets are now lower than they have been for many a season this year and the average price for a Premiership ticket is £34:00p.. Went on their Price of Fottball 2016 webpage for Arsenal quote:- Cheapest £27:00p (where is that). Dearest £92:00p (they state the highest in Premiership). As for the marching band that was tradition, do you think for one minute OGL would bring back traditions/a tradition, after spending years getting rid and doing away with them, now if it was one of his or something he introduced there'd be a clamour for it and his ego would be lapping it up with a grin like a Cheshire cat, even though any tradition he ever brought to the club isn't worth tuppence and long forgotten, sadly we have no tradition/traditions anymore thanks to wenger, just a club moulded in his own sad out of date image.

I know theyve got to raise money of course, but in my view the degree to which this Poppy debate has dominated agendas of late is a symptom of how its been taken to the limits now. Jeff/MBG, you don't have to agree with an article to enjoy reading it, sometimes its good to take on another persons opinion which is different to your own, try it sometime? Shall we just keep banging on with the same old rhetoric, everything is terrible, its all crap and we are all doomed? how interesting and thought provoking that is!!! we know, we all know the issues the club/Wenger have put us through over the last 10 years but you don't have to turn every little thing into the same aggressive argument, as I said................ bore off x

Paul good point about the Remembrance Day ceremonies at football stadia. My mothers older brother was killed in WW2 and she suffered his loss all of her life so I don't take these ceremonies lightly . However, these days charities are run by professional, add your own description on to that, who are making money from them. They live in nice houses and drive expensive cars .These people claim that they would be able to achieve similar life-styles in the business or public sector world and so are entitled to be reimbursed for their 'charity work'.A case in my view here of charity begins at home.Their own ones.

Graham - don't worry about being disrespectful. By comparison, the dreadful Andrew Marr and the BBC broadcast an interview with the Franch neo-facist Marine Le Pen on Armistice Sunday. All on a day that we're supposed to remember the horrors of Nazism, not learn how they're coming out of the sewers (and Suffolk swamps) again. How low can our so-called public service broadcaster sink? Andrew Marr deserves a two week caravan holiday chez Jamee for that. I didn't read the rest of your musings - I saw your byline and sensibly gave it a swerve. I'll read it again when you cover more meaningful subjects such as merkin-man stan's love-in that other toupe'ed tw*t, a certain donald trump.

Talking about paying respects well done and respect to our ex player Davor Suker who was spotted and pictured today laying a bunch of flowers on George Bests grave in Belfast while in the country with his national team for tonight's match.

Disagree slightly with Graham about the remembrance events, I personally wear my poppy with pride but feel that football has been somewhat hijacked by the British Legion , which like all charities is focused on raising money. Do we really need soldiers on the pitch and the last post, aswell as poppies on shirts and a minutes silence? We never used to do any of this back in the day so why do we do it now? Are we saying this generation cares more about our war dead than those in the past, because I doubt that very much myself. Let's have a minutes silence if a game falls on armistice day itself, and leave it at that. The rest of it seems a little out of place to me.

Beat United and we will all continue to believe. But I see nothing new in the way we 'defend'or any grit and determination in the face of adversity.Mourinho must be licking his lips at facing the team that all teams in trouble like to face to give their clubs a boost,Arsenal. Let's hope for once we can wipe the smirk off arrogant Mourinho's mug.

Elpelbarmy, when I need your advice on what I post on here I will ask for it mate .You enjoyed the article, well bully for you ! I myself see it as being the same old yawn inducing head up Wengo's ( yawn) arse , tunnel vision regurgitated old pap that we see served up to try and pretend that Arsene is doing a great job by Graham in his never ending circulars about nothing .The Armistice Day touch added some sentimentality to it all ,no idea how Trump though got into it all, other than for a distraction from Wengo's( yawn) failures. On the Armistice ceremony it would appear to a visitor from another planet reading Graham's article that this was an Arsenal thing when in reality every club did one of these ceremonies .Too much is desperately being made out of the rather fortuitous unbeaten, if you ignore the 4 goal pasting of Klopp's crew at home, run .When in reality - as Graham grudgingly acknowledges himself - we failed to win games that we needed to do . Doing so would have laid down a marker and showed that we are fighting for the title and not just another Wengo( yawn) top 4 trophy ... Drawing some games is anyway in the greater scheme of things as bad as losing them ,anyone with any knowledge of football knows that. The recent dropped points in home games that ended in draws adds up to 4 points and then there is the 3 dropped against Klopp's swaggering buccaneers who play the sort of attacking football that Wengo ( yawn) can only dream about .Both sides though both have one thing in common, neither can defend properly.

Yes the club (and fans) certainly showed their respects where Remembrance and Armistice day were concerned, (unlike our lily livered cowards over here in the IFA) and that's something they've always been good at and well done to them and the team for it/that. Back to the present day, you and the rest of the wengerites continue to believe, and dream, you've been doing it now for eleven seasons with the same out come and this one is going to be no different with the same sore arse thanks to an old past it manager.

I think that the name "Arsenal" suggests preparedness for war on its own and in or out of context. If you want irony, it is actually our lack of preparedness to defend ourselves which is the permanent signature of the Wenger era. That penalty was the softest I think I have ever seen. I really don't care where he goes so long as he does.
