A Question of Balance

Picking the best players and playing them in the right positions might improve matters

A Question of Balance

Ramsey – Has the team gone off the boil since his return?

I looked at Wenger’s team selection just prior to the PSG game and thought that he was having a laugh. His starting eleven included Ramsey (who played on the left wing at the Old Trollop match), Sanchez (who you would have expected to have been on the left wing now that Giroud was making a welcome start), and Iwobi (who is being groomed into a left winger and will probably lose interest in the same fashion as Kevin Campbell, Wiltord, Reyes, Bendtner et al). Where was the balance?

My seat for this game was in block 5 near the north-west corner flag which is where I occasionally frequent when I want to be close to the muck and bullets. It’s in one of those areas in the ground where everybody stands for the entire match, and the stewards do nothing about it. But that’s another story. I was close enough to the pitch to see that Ospina in goal seemed a far less imposing figure than Cech. Just suppose that for once we don’t end up with Barcelona in the next round and make progress to the last eight. Will Wenger persist with Ospina, then? It all seems very strange to me. Ospina couldn’t be at fault for either goal but his ball distribution left much to be desired, constantly rolling the ball out to either The Jenk or Gibbs who were being quickly closed down with resulting panic setting in.

I love The Jenk and his passion for playing for The Arse. But against ManUre and again v PSG he was badly shown up. At least his natural enthusiasm led to him being in positions to put in a decent cross, especially in the first half. But alas, when it came to it, his crosses which were meant for the head of Giroud ended up sailing into the crowd behind the goal. It was just like watching Walnutt and we are well versed on his inability to cross a ball, but The Jenk appeared to have had a death wish against somebody in the crowd, because that’s exactly where he appeared to be aiming. I agree with our editor that surely taking a punt on Debuchy must be a viable option until the return of Bellerin, unless Debuchy has now only got one leg, and nobody told us. Over on the left, Gibbs struggled without any extra support from one of our three left wingers. Where was the balance?

And now we come to Sanchez. It seems obvious that he is being overplayed and it is just a matter of time before he gets properly crocked. He actually started off on the right in order to make room for the other two left wingers, and let’s face it, he didn’t do very much. He offered no protection for The Jenk and being a leftie he persisted in cutting in, thus making the final third of the pitch too congested. At least his dive in the box just before halftime hoodwink another one in the series of totally incompetent referees and we were treated to our first shot on goal from Giroud’s resulting well taken penalty. At least, on this occasion Sanchez didn’t try to take the ball away from Giroud. Wenger, please don’t play Sanchez on the right wing as it doesn’t work. Where was the balance?

Yet again, Ozil took a night off work, with one of his trademark ambling, disinterested and anonymous displays. Since his stroke of genius against Ludogorets, we have seen three portions of total disappointment with his performances against Totteringham, ManUre and last night. Such a shame.

Another player who didn’t cover himself with glory was Iwobi. He was the one who actually played on the left wing but appeared out of his depth. I can remember two surging runs but instead of releasing the ball at the vital moment, he ran into trouble and lost the ball. Perhaps he’s been watching Walnutt too often? Surely a better bet would be for Wenger to put Sanchez on the left and The Ox on the right. At least The Ox can cross a ball for Giroud. None of the others appear to possess that gift.

Finally, we come to Ramsey. What on earth was he doing last night? It was as if Denilson had sneaked back into Ashburton Grove, ripped off Ramsey’s head and put it over his own. Ramsey must have gone through his entire infuriating repertoire of sideways and backwards passes during the course of the match. Whilst Ramsey was out injured, we were playing quite reasonably. Since his return we have been awful. It’s been pointed out to me that he has been brilliant whilst playing for Wales, but let’s face it, if you are Welsh and if you can manage to kick a ball in the right direction, you’d get a game for the national team. And if you can’t, you play rugby. So after another inept Ramsey showing, now must be the time to give Xhaka his chance. He can’t do any worse.

I expect to be pilloried for producing my thoughts, but it’s good therapy for me to unbottle my frustrations. A certain manager might tell me that I am in no position to comment. But I have been a Gooner for over fifty years witnessing both the good times and the bad times. If Wenger does get the balance right with these players we just might be in a position to do the business again.

Ozil was hit and miss yesterday as we're most of the team Sanchez and Elneny excepted ! Ozil was in fact at fault for the Cherrys leveler being weak in the challenge after getting a pass from Gabriel he simply tried to shield the ball instead of putting it into touch as it was his safest option the resulting ball through our defence caused the ridiculous penalty to be given ! Yes our opponents had two fair claims afterwards for pens but we had one on Sanchez and earlier a Bournemouth player defended in the box by lying down and trying to catch the ball between his elbows! It was overall a patchy performance but a good result it remains to be seen if we can capitalise on it gain momentum and move forward ! The main stumbling block for us is Wenger ! Why he did not start a home game against a side like Bournemouth who no disrespect are not a top team with TWO up front is beyond me yes they played well but lack a cutting edge we could and likely should have bettered our goal difference with the right formation and performance! No doubt our ELC gam on Wednesday will be thrown unless the kids come up trumps against a servicable Saints side who have given our first choice team trouble in the past! The ECL is winnable and should be taken seriously!

GoonerRon; Love your optimism. I would have thought the challenge is already over and we are fighting for 4th spot yet again. I havent seen anything that suggests we have improved on last seasons lost opportunity. Same old mistakes, same old mental frailties. We need to be grateful that the much derided Maureen is making a mess of Manure and keeping Weng in the media's good books.

Better start looking to the future and make strong overtures to a Simione now. Mourinho wallowing in self pity over at Manure and potententially could be more than 10 - 12 points adrift of 4th place after the next 4 games. I suspect a sacking at season end. A good offer from Arsenal now would probably tip it in our favour whereas it would have previously been an uphill battle .

Further ti my recent experiments involving mice and a maze we recently extracted Jamerson's DNA from Mr Leeks stomach contents. After breeding 5 generations of mice containing 94% Jamerson DNA. I ran a series of tests. The Jamee mice nicknamed the "thick mice". Were unable to intuitively adapt to changing maze patterns ( unlike their fellow normal DNA mice ) and unfortunately continually ran headfirst into the walls. I sadly abandoned the experiment due to three of the mice suffering severe head injuries.

Dear Reader. This was a wonderful site but Arseknewbest/bonzo knows best in accordance with the knowledge of Arsenal FC. In theory, he knows as much as the rest and that is f@ck all. Ozil cannot be compared to DB10, agreed, because DB10 is not in his league. True genius.

A massive 3 points given other results - keeping pace with the front runners and building a gap to the chasing pack was essential. Mbg - the ref was poor (I think he's the poorest of all PL refs) but was equally **** for both teams.

Dear Reader - When the execrable Jamee son says he is looking forward to the drive he actually means that he is travelling in the back of a G4S lorry that will be taking him from HMP Belmarsh (where he has been serving a lengthy spell on remand for deviancy, hypocrisy and bigotry), to Broadmoor where a warm if slightly unhinged welcome awaits. Leekie and Coleslaw are understood to be less than thrilled at the prospect of a reunion in their cell.

decent game today decent performance but no more than that.3 points won and that was the main thing .read a lot of slagging off of jenkinson lately can't see how he has played badly as so many say he's only just back from a long injury and certainly wasn't helped against psg by sanchez playing for himself that night as a full back the player in front of you is so important and i played hundreds of games in that position.he has done ok as far as i am concerned .monreal has certainly played no better this season and latter half of last season yet gets nowhere near of the criticism jenkinson gets who is back up not first choice also bellerin is a fantastic player better defender and runner with the ball but even on a bad day jenkinson is a far better crosser bellerins delivery in the final third is generally poor.

bard, I have seen plenty of footy. I t was just nice to see a team come and have a go instead of the usual ten men behind the ball. I agree with Mad monk, we should also consider 3 at the back sometimes. The game gets quicker and quicker and we have speedy players. Perhaps we could even try out the 3,3,3,1 formation that the legend Cruyff spoke about.

Cyril mate have you ever seen a proper game of football? If thats your idea of a great game you cant have seen many games. A lot of huff and puff and very little quality. Mad monk yes mate how bad was Wally in possession. Good result but not much to shout about. Sorry for Debuchy, cruel in the extreme. Hope its not too serious. He looked composed while he was on the field.

Cyril, that was Bournemouth we were playing, (with a manager who thinks the sun shines out of TOF's arse with one eye on the Arsenal job) not PSG, Barca, Man yoo, Bayren, etc, etc, with managers who don't give a stuff about him and love getting one over him, and not play into his hands making him and us/players look good.

No doubt the referees will be getting an easy ride after that one, no petitions, (or maybe not) and no conspiracy theories about playing away from home after Europe from the David Icke branch of the AKB's, all is forgiven and forgotten with everything rosey in the AKB garden of wing wang again. wenger out.

A thought for all those who believe the nonsense that Ozil is comparable to DB10, which one of these players would you like to play for Arsenal; Payet,Silva,Coutinho or even Eriksen? Personally I would have Payet or Silva or Coutinho or even Eriksen ahead of Ozil and all of them are light year's away from DB10 (I wouldn't even mind Fabregas back why not put a cheeky bid in for January)

Just read Tony's match report on Untold it's hilarious according to him Bournemouth are a bunch of dirty fouling scum and we didn't go for tackles in the second half under the instructions of Wenger because the ref had been bribed and would almost certainly penalise us! Why didn't our tactically astute manager revert to a back 3 after Debuchy went off and bring on Giroud we were 1 up and a perfect set up to counter a team which had more possession than us. Mind you we did have Wally.....how many times did he lose possession and as for that cross in the first half... well that just sums him up

MBG - Arsene Wenger should have been moved on after the Hull cup final ,,,,,he's done a great job but we've been stale for several years now and a new manager is needed as we all know, but as long as we get 4th and achieve the balance sheet targets nothing will change ,,,, I'd give the job to Simeone or failing him, give Eddie Howe a chance ,,,,, sadly I'm expecting to see Arsene given another 3 years, so expect the apathy and under achievement to continue ,,,,, sooooooo frustrating I could scream !!

Well done matey, excellent article from the heart honest & unpretentious. Clearly the AFC I grew up with & have loved (not a sensible thing to do I agree) has long gone & is now a Corporation. But even so, how much more ridiculous can things get - total la la land. It's not as if Arthur has any claim to being competent anymore. Did someone say "you couldn't make it up"?

If he gets the balance right ? you should know better than that mate, how long has he been trying now ? and failing miserably eleven years ? he hasn't it in him, and even he did get lucky the arrogant old fraud would just fook it up anyway or find a way like he always does.

It really is as simple as that myself and a hell of a lot of others have been saying similar for years but it also helps to buy proper players and not second third raters too, but the problem is we have an old past it manager with out of date(well out of date)philosophy's to arrogant and egoistic to do that (because he supposedly knows best/better) and others haven't the balls to tell him or disagree with him, and are too in love with TOF to think he's wrong, or he's just to fooking thick and hasn't the brains to8kb know, take your pick. wenger out.

Good piece Fozzy,it seems that it does not matter how badly Ozil and Ramsey perform, because for Wenger they are certain starters. Everyone apart from Wenger can see that Sanchez needs a break. SKG towards the end weren't half of Graham's team 'patsys'!

Good comments on an annual problem - get a few injuries and instead of logical like for like replacements we get the usual litany of players playing in wrong positions, the balance of the team is broken and performance drops. I used get angry about it but now like a train on the circle line I just wait for it to come round again, all my family are Gooners and we call it "nightmare November" It is quite amazing how AW can make every single season for the last ten years exactly the same, start well, injuries, struggling performance, finish second in group in CL, lose in the last 16 to Barca or Bayern or anybody with a decent plan against us. We recover until there is a chance of the title then the pressure causes us to collapse and we finish 3rd or 4th in the league. As for Jenkinson, he may not be good enough but he is doing his best and for that reason alone let him stay in the team, he is living the dream and in the end Jenks playing will not make one iota of difference to how our season ends up. In fact did n't George Graham occasionally play a "patsy" so the crowds could moan at a planted target rather than pick on the rest of the team - Perry Groves anyone!

The only point I would disagree with Fozzy is on Sanchez,i thought he was right footed and I think good defenders know this because he cuts into his right and often gets dispossessed.I can understand Wenger trying him on the right although it clearly did not work.I agree about Ozil he needs a kick up the back side in some matches but Wenger has his favourites. The decision to let Campbell go was a strange one he often played him on the right even though he is left footed which effected his form.He was another player mistreated by Wenger and I am afraid Xhaka looks to be getting the same.

Come on WHO was SURPRISED about any of the last three results and perforomances? Anyone? I could see it coming and I suspect so could a good proportion of gooners ! We are simply repeatingredients the same old formula we have seen since 2006 in the CL and 2004 in the premier league ! An exit from the ECLECTIC vs the Saints will just confirm that NOTHING has changed ! We have yet again been duped we have NOT bought the world class striker we needed just a cheap option who is injured surprise surprise! We are essentially the SAME team as for the past two seasons ! So expect the same results! Untill Wenger goes NOTHING will change !

Time to play this team ,,,,, Cech, Debuchy (until Bellerin is fit), Mustafi, Kos, Monreal (until we buy a proper left back) ,,,,,, Xhaka, Elneny ,,,,,, Ox, Ozil, Sanchez ,,,,, Giroud (until we buy a decent CF) ,,,,, and if Ozil continues to disappear drop him and play Ramsey in the only position he is suited to behind the striker, (can someone please tell Ramsey, he is no playmaker and to model himself on Lampard) ,,,,, the above seems so obvious
