Arsenal Circular 163 – A time for leaders and fist waving

Many question marks over Arsenal need a response

Arsenal Circular 163 – A time for leaders and fist waving

Dear Fellow Gunners

For November, read December. The stumble has come. Defeats at Everton and City have dealt us a heavy blow. The anti-Wengerites are loving it - having a field day – venting all their anger on AW. The pro-Wengerites are feeling the pressure, trying to keep a balance and continuing to believe in the future.

Are we making a mountain out of a molehill? Are we losing our critical faculties by over-reacting to two defeats? Actually I don’t think so. Those of us who support Wenger may not like the tone of the comments of the anti-Wengerites – some are triumphalist – they are “I Told You So”. They are unattractive, provocative and in some cases vulgar and abusive. But the issue here is not the quality of the criticism. Football is football and we all comment/criticise/support with our eyes wide open and we know that out there in social media there are bad people but that is democracy – unfortunately. The phrase “Warts and All” comes to mind.

No, the issue is not the quality and tone of the post match comment but the quality and tone of the play on the pitch. Angered though we may be by the comments of some we cannot be deflected from the core issue – are we good enough? Is this another setback the like of which we have seen in recent seasons since we became a buying club – I disregard our failings when we were a selling club when our achievements were in my view quite remarkable season after season.

Are we pretenders? Are we a quality team that lacks the character to become a winning team? Are we the bridesmaid and not the bride? The evidence is not ambiguous – if you are positive you can point to a long unbeaten run after the opening day defeat by Liverpool. It was a dramatic setback that hit us all and the team showed quality to bounce back – that was an example of character – real character. Good performances, good goals, good team spirit.

But we have faltered and in two away matches we have surrendered a one goal lead to lose 1-2. And questions are asked – do we have a soft centre? – do we lack character on the pitch? – are we too subdued? – do we have the stomach for a fight? – are we leaders or followers? The two defeats raise doubts – questions have been asked and the challenge is there for Wenger and each member of the squad? Can we bounce back or are we a defeated group? Is there anything left in the tank?

And the questions go further – is this down to Wenger’s lack of physical joviality – do we need the hugs and back slapping of Conte and Klopp? Is Wenger’s yesterday’s man? Was he fortunate to inherit guts and aggression from George Graham? Has he failed to select the right combination of talent and character?

Or are we over-reacting? Are we so upset to surrender a leading position and fall nine points behind CFC that we have lost our own critical faculties? There is a long way to go – Chelsea can falter, we can go on another run, Cazorla could yet return to play a vital role. At the same time maybe the dye is cast – maybe we are where we are for good reason. We are just not good enough because Wenger is just not good enough.

It all depends on what happens between now and May 2017. A judgment will be called upon to be made. There has been time – there has been money – we live in the present and not in the past. It is a challenge for Wenger and I for one so hope he succeeds – he is one of the great personalities of football. He has to get it right, has to get into the heads of the quiet ones – Ozil, Theo, Ox, even Kos, Iwobi There can be no casualness, no switching off, no going to sleep. Concentration and commitment and character has to be 110% in every day as an AFC player – in practice, in the matches, at half time, before the game.

We have the quality – for sure but can we turn a tide, can we break up the momentum of the opponents when they try to bounce back? I know nothing about tactics – I see things but I am far from being a football commentator in the same way I suspect applies to many of the readers of this message – we think we know but do we? What we do know about is effort and more effort and the need for leaders and fist waving to ensure each and every player is switched on, alert and ready for the challenge.

We will need it in abundance against Pulis’s WBA and for every match in every competition until the end of the season. Now is the time to suspend judgment, to get behind the players and to play our part in turning the second half of the season into a successful campaign.

Long term decisions come in May

The Chavs are on fire, proper attacking football in every department, with a proper manager, their fans must be loving it, and our old fraud ? stuck in a fooking time warp for years, and unable to get out of it boring us all to death with his long failed tippy tappy going nowhere. We want wenger out tonight.

Yes Paul Ward, that's exactly what will happen, or near as dammit anyway. What staggers me is that there are still those on here naive enough to believe it will be any different. Amazing or sad ? You choose. Wenger out.

Let's vote for the most deluded comment of the year. 1. Squeak - "Wenger must stay!" 2: Jameeba - "We are two classes above" 3: Graham Perry - "I'd hand Wenger a new contract"

As predicted a half decent run will probably now ensue in the PL, we turn up at the bridge in early Feb sitting in 3rd or 4th, 5 or 6 behind the lead and we get stuffed.End of interest in winning the league. As dull as it is predictable.

Finsbury Joe - you've changed your tune it was only last week you were quoting another fraud (we'll sort off) old Myles Palmer. Apparently Wengo had already signed the 2 year contract?? Well believe me Wengo ain't my favourite , indeed I want him gone tomorrow. I do believe though that he will no necessarily lie. He has gone on record this week as saying he will review the contract at the end of season. My view is therefore Myles is wrong and the view that this is his last season is correct.

Oh so another super fan has come home to see Arsenal for Christmas, I wonder how much he has spent on Arsenal, and like other super fans has found it very easy to paper over the last ten seasons of embarrassments, humiliations and everything else (caused by his messiah) that has went with them, and that are all part of our history, and this one is going to judge him in March i see, i wonder which March, and what on, maybe on how many feathers the old turkey ruffles in the turkey coup of the CL before being gobbled up (that won't be many by his own admission) so it's obviously money, wealth, profit, with so called fans like him God help us, they're a new breed alright, Sad or what. wenger out for Xmas.

Thanks for that GS. I'm a reasonable person because I tend to side with the defendable not the indefensible. If you'd like to take note. An AKB appears on this site and talks sense. Within weeks, he gets shot down and abused. Is it any wonder why this site gets people like Jamerson, leek, bba etc. They probably spend more money on Arsenal than most on here. Time will tell on that matter. Give the scum down the road the hatred, not genuine gooners who have heart somewhere in the club.

How unfortunate for Wenger that Arsenal ply their trade in the English top flight, can we not transfer to la liga or Ligue 1, where every team try and play football and presumably would let us win every week ? On second thoughts scrap that as Real Madrid, Barca , PSG and Monaco would all finish above us.Perhaps we can swap with Celtic, SPL much more to Wengers liking.

There we have it in a nutshell mad monk..... GS, along with others who wish to belittle or brazenly attempt to scourge the overriding fact that WE ARE ALL GOONERS. WE REALLY ARE BETTER THAN THAT. A small minority of Arsenal fans, and that includes yourself are unhappy. I cannot do anything about the day trippers but you can. 38.000 Highbury 60.000 Emirates. What do you want???? Your Arsenal back?? Because trust me.... It ain't happening my son. Get over it. Move on. Arsenal are a new breed.... Whether you can handle that is another debate. £10,000 ????? I just very much doubt that. Anger should be aimed at the scum down the road, not on here. Seasons greetings to all Gooners.

The signing of Cech, Mustafi, Ozil, xhaka and Sanchez is the spine of the team. Sign all 5 for around the price of Pogba. Wenger was offered Pogba but turned him down. Had he signed him you'd be shouting from the rooftops yet another waste of money. Whilst I appreciate that Ancelloti and co can do the business in Europe, that is a failing of his but he can ruffle a few feathers against Europe's elite. Yes, he's failed but champions league generates money which in turn generates wealth which generates profit which generates spending. So the simple fact that being in the CL for the last 20 or so years can only bode well. I can only tip my hat to you spending, ahem, £10,000 a year on Arsenal but if you are no longer happy then don't sit on your hands, don't log in to online Gooner and complain. Do something about it. Oh hang on the damp squib was vs Norwich last season. Didn't go too well did it???? What does that say? Finally, it's to easy to paper over the 2 recent FA cup wins as if it wasn't part of our history, please feel free to check out the comments on here by some. Worthless, lucky etc. It fits in nicely to the anti's agenda. For the record, I'm in the middle, neither pro nor anti. Around March, I will make up my mind. It is difficult being a gooner but the boys down the road in white would love our history and a little bit of what Wenger has given us. The sh*t down the road should be where we aim our aggression but it seems to all come back to the Wenger argument which has been totally exhausted.

For the first time in his illustrious career big Petr Cech has gone 8 league games without a clean sheet, but then he's never played under a manager so utterly incompetent at organising a defence until now. Two managers who certainly can organise defensive matters, Pulis and Fat Sam now lie in wait, how ironic would it be if they effectively end our interest in the PL this year, and along with it AWs Arsenal career.Merry Christmas everyone.

Leeky: very good fairy tale, well done , you put together more than 2 sentences . After all you must believe in fairy tales if you still think Prince Charming Wenger can deliver a PL title , now that is 1 fairy tale that won't be coming true any day soon. Now go and put out a mince pie and sherry for Santa , even he won't bring you that PL title on you're list . Maybe you'll get one of those split scarfs with Arsenal & B Munich on it . Jamee son you've obviously taken a break from the festive fisting (festing/fistiving?) to sit down with a nice mug of warm potato juice linctus and one of leekie's yuletide logs to compose your christmas address. That roll call of deviants that you mention in 101848 can best be precis'ed as follows. Jamee son - friendless, charmless, suffering from multiple personality disorder. Lives in a swamp in suffolk, currently on remand, hated by his children. Arsenal credentials nil. Likes to gratify himself and others with rusty power tools. Should be on a register of some kind. Spending xmas in a shed on his own. Coleslaw - last seen 9 months ago in a southwold porn emporium asking for directions to spunksville caravan park. Neo-n*zi and homophobe - now thought to be tangled in Jamee son's web of deceit. Police called off search two minutes after being told of his disappearance. Hated equally by Jamee son's kids. Badarse - former, verbiose appeaser of bigots and homophobes. Unable to see the wood for the trees. Never used two words when 3000 would do. Became a complete self-parody before disappearing (only to be sporadically released from Jamee's dungeon). Pseudo-intellectual Wenger apologist - do not approach if seen. bba - swivel eyed loon, one of Jamee's multiple personalities (all of which are crap). A fictional figure of fun (like Jamee's softee brother. Pete). wobby, smells of jobby and former lover of mr blobby. And that's the ever-dwindling group of amoebas on here willing to keep the chihuahua's speereeet up. All the best to everyone on here - except Jamee!

Last night saw the annual OG pantomime featuring Snow White (mbg, as he's a big girls blouse) and the seven dwarfs (GS, Jeff, bard, JJ, Akb, Bonzo and knuckle dragging mad man monk). The aging cast took to the stage looking very tired. Wenger must go declared Snow White for the millionth time. Meanwhile in the bar the party was in full flow with the real Arsenal supporters decked from head to toe in red and white. Suddenly an elderly gentleman appeared at the door offering a free drink to the real Arsenal supporters. It was the one and only Arsene Wenger. It's on the house he stated, after all, it's not going to dent my 8 million pounds a year eh. The crowd in the bar were delirious. Jamerson, colesy, badarse, bba, wobby and all thanked the greatest manager the world has ever seen. Arsene opened the stage door and waved with his middle finger, goodbye to the seven dwarfs. Eff off blasted mad monk. Mr Wenger made his way to the exit and thanked the real Arsenal supporters for everything they did to make his club great. As he left, the place erupted with "THERES ONLY ONE ARSENE WENGER" . Bonzo heard all of this from the stage and whispered to mbg, maybe we should be like them. Bah humbug snapped mbg.

Graham - your piece is nearly all unanswered, rhetorical questions, which suggests you lack the confidence to make a positive call in favour of your man. There is also never a time to "suspend judgement". Anyway, in my mind, there was Arsenal FC, a north London football club I followed my dad into supporting, and who I well remember backing at Highbury and across the country; and a corporate outfit called Arsenal Holdings, a commercial, multinational business entity geared to remunerating foreign high-rollers and which is headquartered at a beautifully designed and soulless bowl called the Emirates Stadium, which could be anywhere. By the by, it's the die that is cast and dye that is fast, which the editor should have picked up. Come on you Gunners.

A to. E of hedged bets there. If Wenger fails again, come May are we - this time allowed to judge him, as in the sense of his time being up? Or will we be here this time next year going through the same motions? I truly fear the latter.

Ye gods mr round robin otherwise known as the Arsenal Circular. What is the bleeding point. Unless you see us as being a group psychology drop in centre where you slowly work out your issues until you come to an understanding that Wengo must go by any legal means possible. BBA - I've adapted a nice little xmas Ronettes number in the previous thread to keep the AKBs happy ( I know it can be a lonely time for them at Christmas especially as the miserable bastards save money by not putting on their heating ) anyway I didn't include you as your not important enough.

Imagine what they'd pay for ozey, feo, ramsey and ox by that yardstick - Kerriiiist even Jenko might be worth £20 million. Graham have you been in a coma this last 10 years ?Your post suggests that you have just had an epiphany moment. You raise familiar questions but they have already been answered many times over. Its cut and paste every year. Chelsea go into Xmas top of the league, Conte deems Oscar surplus to requirements and bang he's gone and they will probably spend the money on a top player. What will we do in the Jan window ? If past seasons are any guide we will do absolutely nothing. Jeff has nailed it in his post. Happy Christmas to all the gooners who post on here. Tedious, cliche-ridden claptrap. All 163 of 'em. Where was that dye (sic) cast Graham and what colour was it? Nearly every sentence contains an implicit apology for wenger and a passive aggressive cheap-shot against those who saw that the emperor was walking around with his genitals hanging out over a decade ago. It's sad - he's w*nked his legacy away and deserves nothing but opprobrium.

Depends on what happens between now and May? Well I've got a pretty good idea, we put a little run together before Chelsea end any hope of winning the PL on Feb 4th. Then we exit the CL at the hands of Bayern Munich. Then we limp into the top four, yet again. Anyone want to disagree with that prediction? And does anybody think that this outcome should be enough to earn Wenger a new deal? I don't, and believe he will depart the club in May

A strange post. Its more of a bugle call by an AW man, desperate for a revival and sanctuary, but more so, a cry for freedom and escape away from the reality that is AWs decline. The questions that you ask are all those that are debated every day on here. Why not join the debates rather than posting this stuff, trying to prompt reaction? The post us ultimately ruined by the assertion that if its anti Arsene its largely aggressive, abusive and vulgar et al. I think that comment is a reflection of yr insecurity in the face of views opposed to yours? Ars you Badarse in disguise by any chance i ask myself? Do you not see Jamesons and his multifarious alter ego posts or do you just ignore them? In all, the post is harmless and vacuous but (in the main) utter rubbish. Lots of words, saying nothing. Certainly not advancing any Arsene must stay argument.

This is the most pointless, long-winded piece of nonsense I have read in ages. It is as sterile and unoriginal as the man about whom it is written. Nothing new to say, and it could have been written in any one of the last eight seasons. "It all depends what happens between now and May 2017". Why did it not depend on what happened between December of the previous year and May 2009, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14*, 15* and 16? (* - AKBs would argue FA Cup win was enough, ,but most of us know it papered over cracks in the decline...) "Long term decisions come in May". Same applies - why have they not come in any other May in the last 8 years? What is different this time?

I think the term should of been a lucky run after defeat to the scousers as it certainly has not been a quality run and luck has finally caught up with the team of overpaid big time charlies with the exception of Sanchez the only player with a true work ethic. So Fat Sam is given another chance a man with no ambition or pressure to deliver any trophies just attain Premier league survival, a sort of upside down fourth placed trophy. He will no doubt achieve this as he would no doubt achieve a top 4 finish with this Arsenal squad whilst telling G Neville to go f""k himself. I am in no way a fan of this grotesque individual but he seems to get the results required by his employer so in this sense is he any worse than Wenger by the fact he does what is required nothing more nothing less. ps an anagram of Sam Allardyce... clearly as mad

Nice one JW and you have answered the reverend's patronising questionaire/circular/exhortation/accusation/paranoid case study with much aplomb. Now the little matter of the ultra gobby Lord Theo being one of the quiet ones (awwwwww) is really hilarious. The big problem is that younger people generally do not like the touch of really really old people (fact) especially if they look like a weird ostrich type bird. Conte and Kloppie have got the I'm your pal thing nailed and I bet Fabregas has never enjoyed the game so much and if we see how Howe (duh) has coached all that abstractive rubbish out of Jack's game in a matter of weeks and making him a likeable lad for proper Arsenal supporters and not the tarts who scream everytimr someone remarks the ref is a **** period. No need for reams of ****e analysis on a subject even referees are bored with. If those two goals had been ruled offside Citeh would have still won. Contrast De Bruyne's pass to Stirling with a typically peripheral tap sideways by the really deep quiet (big ****ing bank account but not big enough) Mesut and there is the gap. Wenger has Quietly (sic) turned Arsenal into a non-football club full of snipey, middle class foodie types who do not understand that football is about ****ing emotion! Conte going mad is truly a sight to behold. It's a younger person's game and Wenger does not look good in the light. Sorry to say he looks feeble, fragile and troubled in that rich old man way. It has taken him since he led Arsenal through the desert to the Emirates (biblical proportion here) a good few seasons just to sort his Zip out! Thanks Mr Perry cause Happy Holz would not be the same without a sermon from Bald Mountain ....

Four years ago, Wenger said: "If everybody is absolutely devastated when we finish third in the league, I promise you I will not be here if you finish 15th one day." - So there you have it, anywhere in the top 14 will do.

"It all depends on what happens between now and May 2017. A judgment will be called upon to be made." - I have heard this for the last ten years. Judge me in May. We all know where Arsenal will be come May. Contesting the top four trophy. The problem is that that is success as Wenger says "The first trophy is to finish in the top four".

Dear Graham, why are you angered by the tone and comments made by Wenger's critics> It's football we are talking about and not a Sunday School debate on pacifism. As the actress said to the bishop, you have to take the rough wth the smooth.you It's a FACT that you of course find hard to swallow that his numerous critics are proven RIGHT about his shortcomings EVERY season and have been for donkeys years. Whereas his sycophantic supporters ( Wenger must stay for ever)_are constantly proven WRONG time after time... Wengo himself doesn't do himself any favours either with his own comments that he aims at his critics who have never worked a day in football so know nothing and his pathetic attempts to deflect the reasons for his own constant repetitive failings onto others - such as match officials. The two decisions regarding the off-side interpretations that he used for an excuse to try and cover for an abysmal display by our players in Sunday's second half against City that he made no effort as usual to change are just par for the course by the irritating and arrogant know it all Monsieur Wenger .We had similar calls by refs that went our way this season at Burnley and at home to Southampton .Wengo did not complain about those decisions and as I recall it you supported the refs ! Hypocrisy and cant have become the norm though with AKB's and Wengo - who looks older and more stressed out and out of touch with every yawn inducing season that passes as he he stubbornly hangs on to his 8.3m a year wages. The fool is a pathetic disgrace and has turned himself and AFC into figures of ridicule.

I really good post, I think we will finish 2nd or 3rd this season. We are strong enough and have the strength in the squad to cope. But we will loose another 3-4 games and this will not happen to one of the other title contenders. I do remember we had the same in Graham time when the club needed a Manager change, to send the club in a new direction. The decisions now are more focused on business, and therefore I wouldn't be surprised to see Wenger here next season if the profit margins are OK...

When you've been watching the game and Arsenal in particular for over half a century you do get a feeling in games when you just know things are going to go imminently tit's up ! I and my mate and fellow long serving gooner got that very feeling during the city game about mid way through the first half ! It was obvious to us that we needed a player to hold the ball up as every time we played out from the back often forced to go long by city's pressing game the ball was coming straight back at us ! The second half officials mistakes aside we simply lost the plot after the leveller my mate remarked that Wenger would not send on Giroud until we'd gone behind which proved prophetic! Wenger did too little too late our players with the exception of Sanchez simply lost it we were fortunate not to lose by more than one goal ! This game is NOT a one off aberration it's a common occurrence at least a two or three sometimes more a season certainty we KNOW were going to see performances like this usually when the pressure is on ! If you can't see the common denominater in all this then I suggest an urgent trip to specsavers !

Like most Wenger supporters, staying loyal to their leader whilst hoping for a new improved version. Meanwhile Wenger never changes his ways, surrounds himself with quislings & fails to react tactically when things go badly wrong. Time is up & Wenger is yesterdays idea, the club should be looking for a top class successor & Wenger shouldn't be allowed any say in the process.

A very measured post Graham , after Everton and City I was down in the dumps and would not cry to much if Arsene goes at the end of the season - as you say , lets see how the long term decisions play out then and save our energies in the meantime to support the team and not waste it on anger and speculation. Merry Xmas to all the Gooners that read this.
