Online Ed: Arsenal win 7th FA Cup for Arsene Wenger with incredible performance

Per-Fect Ending

Wow. It was, rather like the FA Cup semi-final, but with an even better performance, a case of where did that come from? If Arsenal could play like that more often etc, etc, etc.

Unlike the last time these two teams met in the final, 15 years ago, Arsenal were the underdogs, Chelsea the side going for the double. And with the absence of three central defenders, going into the game, most anticipated they’d end up like a boxer on the ropes, captain Per Mertesacker starting his first game of the season, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain playing the left wing back position for the first time, having impressed on the right side before his injury. Wenger, as he did in 2014 and 2015, stuck with his cup keeper rather than play the first choice in the final, which was generally considered to be a risky decision. Ospina suffered as first choice with Szczesny playing the 2015 final, so it would have been personally harsh on him for Cech to start.

So all set up for a Conte inspired and organized Chelsea side to complete their season in style and bring on John Terry for the final moments so the club captain could complete his career at the Bridge by lifting the FA Cup. However, Arsenal didn’t read the script.

Chelsea did create a few chances over the course of the match, but Wenger’s team had far more, and generally dominated the play. The early goal was key, and shrouded in controversy. From where I was sitting, it seemed an obvious handball. I couldn’t believe it when the goal was given after a discussion between the referee and the linesman. That Ramsey also influenced the decision of Courtois whether or not to come for the ball was another factor, and the reason for the debate between the officials. I can certainly understand Chelsea’s unhappiness with the award of the goal, and in fairness, it should not have been given. But isn’t winning cups sometimes down to a bit of luck? Wenger’s fortune may have eluded him in the Premier League this season, but it came good in this tournament, with the drawing of two non-league teams when the side were losing matches as a matter of course, and Manchester City’s hitting the woodwork twice in the semi-final.

His side earned their luck with a performance of spirit and quality. It was reminder of days long gone, and confirmation that, with Sanchez, Ozil and Ramsey all on song, this team is capable of great things, which merely crystallized the frustration that we have seen this level of performance so infrequently. I haven’t followed the latest Sanchez news, except for his listing as a Bayern player in Chile’s Confederations Cup squad, which may or not be a photoshop job, but someone told me the Chilean has stated he is happy to see out his contract and leave on a Bosman next season. If that is the case, it is a real test of the club’s assertion that they are not simply run as a business. Can you imagine them retaining an asset that will be worth nothing this time next year, having already taken a hit of circa £50 million for failing to make the Champions League? Certainly, the club need to keep him, even if it is only for one year. He is irreplaceable.

Arsenal enjoyed so many chances, to have lost the game would have been a travesty. Ozil, Ramsey and Welbeck all came close, with either Gary Cahill or the post coming to Chelsea’s rescue. It was 1-0 at the interval, and we anticipated an improved opposition coming out of the dressing room with Conte’s words ringing in their ears. I was astonished Fabregas was not brought on earlier, but the decision of basket case Victor Moses to take a dive in the area shortly after he finally entered the fray was costly as he was awarded a second yellow card.

Still, Chelsea, who had come back into the game, rallied and equalized, a deflection from Costa’s shot foiling Ospina, who might have done better. No matter. Giroud came on for Danny Welbeck before the game restarted and almost immediately the Frenchman crossed blind into the penalty area hoping someone would be there to get onto it. There were several contenders for the man of the match, but for me, it was Aaron Ramsey. He made constant runs beyond the frontline all match, reminding us of that purple patch he enjoyed about three seasons ago. It was fitting that one such run saw him convert Giroud’s cross to ultimately settle the game.

Other contenders for man of the match were Mertesacker, who had an incredible game under the circumstances, Xhaka, who pulled the strings all afternoon, and Sanchez, who was given the award officially. But there were standout performances throughout the team, especially the captain’s fellow defenders Holding and Monreal.

Chelsea had one gilt edged chance to equalize a second time but Ospina saved well from Costa. Arsenal had several opportunities to settle things and give their fans a relaxed final few minutes, but failed to convert, Ozil hitting the post an incredible miss after doing all the hard work. The final action of the game saw sub Elneny with the goal gaping in front of him, only for him to decide against shooting and check back. Incredible. The final whistle followed seconds later, and the celebrations began.

The amount of space at Wembley certainly helped Arsenal, their passing and movement exploiting the pitch, and one can almost look forward to the North London derby next season based on this performance. (Does this count as another trophy won at Spurs’ home ground?) And of course, we’ll all be back in August for the Community Shield game against Conte’s team, doubtless with some new faces.

As for Arsenal, well, a big decision awaits at Tuesday’s board meeting. The manager wishes to continue, and the smart money is that there will be some token changes to make it appear as if he is relinquishing some of the control. I sat next to the Highbury Spy at the game, and he told me he’d trade five years with no trophies to win this final. Talk about doing a deal with the devil. The final would actually be the perfect way for Wenger to bow out, but if he was going to do that of his own volition, surely he’d have talked with the stadium interviewer and announced it to the fans there and then. Interestingly, I didn’t hear a chant of ‘One Arsene Wenger’ during or after the game, that bond seems to have been broken by the events of this season.

It was a huge and surprising victory, and credit to Wenger for getting this performance out of his players, and winning a record seven FA Cups, more than half of the total the club have won in their history. It does raise questions about where this kind of intensity has been all season, and perhaps, in the post-match interview, captain Per Mertesacker gave a hint of things. Asked if the criticism of the manager had been unfair, the BFG responded ‘I don’t care’, explaining he was focused on getting himself ready for this game. He’s been fit since January, and he only started the final because the manager had run out of alternatives. There has been a fallout. Mertesacker was so good, one needs to ask why he wasn’t used at any other time since his return from fitness as the team went of a sequence of humiliating defeats. There was no huge gathering of the squad around the manager after the final whistle to throw him up in the air. One suspects the players may have motivated themselves in the semi-final and final because there was a trophy at stake.

Whatever the reason, it was a memorable performance, easily the best this season, and probably the best for a few years. It would be far better to remember Arsene Wenger this way than he end up being barracked by the fans, as will surely happen next season once events follow their usual course. We watch and wait…

Enjoy the summer everybody.

@ Bard - I'm not saying it will be different, I'm asking if it could (in italics) be different. This musing is purely based on the change of formation and tactical set up (something not many on here thought Wenger could ever display) in the past 10 games. We've looked more assured defensively and definitely less likely to concede on the counter attack. That's why it could (in italics) be different to other years. Like I say, if change comes I'll embrace it as it won't be a bad thing, but if it doesn't I feel slightly more optimistic that this formation unlocks our strengths more effectively.

Thanks Gaz. It's going to be very interesting this summer. Arsenal are all ready being linked with players we have no chance of signing, competing against City, Utd & Chelsea, not a chance!! My money's on the club selling Sanchez this summer if he doesn't sign the reported 270k/week contract on the table.

@Seven Kings Gooner1, with Kronke in town since last weekend you can be sure they have met privately several times. While I enjoyed the win on Saturday I'm now beginning to think it was the worst thing that could have happened. If Wenger signs on it is most certainly going to get even more poisonous next season. If he had an ounce of dignity or any self awareness he'd go. But his pre and post match interviews demonstrate he has the self awareness of a mayfly

Well done Huddersfield you have made a dream come true for Herbert Chapman. He managed Huddersfield Town in the top league and won the league 4 times and the F.A. Cup with them and then went on to manage The Gooners and made them the greatest team in the British Isles. Now Huddersfield will be playing Arsenal in the Premiership next season. WHAT A DREAM COME TRUE FOR HIM. Huddersfield will be so welcomed at The Emirates. "THERE'S ONLY ONE HERBERT CHAPMAN, ONE HERBERT CHAPMAN, THERE'S ONLY ONE HERBERT CHAPMAN".

Yes indeed you soon lose your high and come back down to earth again with a bump when you see footage and photos of the weasel sloping around the pitch like a peacock with arms on thighs and his f*****g grin taking the applause and acclaim as if he's been the great motivator and tactical genius of the win, like winning the lottery then realising it wasn't your ticket, if he stays there's going to be a hell of a lot of realisations like that in the coming weeks months. wenger out now.

Apparently AW as told the board not to listen to any criticism from the fans - so in business terms he is really saying "don't pay any attention to your customers" That attitude in any normal working environment ends up with people losing their jobs.

GR; your suggestion that next season might be different is based on what exactly, surely not on a fine performance in the FA cup. If youre part of the Arsenal hierarchy there is absolutely no need for anything to change. The club havent seriously tried to win any of the big trophies for years, this season is no different. The only difference now is a large number of Arsenal fans have just woken up to this fact hence the protests. I admire your optimism but if the current regime stay on it will be more of the same.

Seen a couple of photos doing the rounds this morning made me laugh, (not sure what point in the game they were taken) of Chelsea WAGS with their young offspring with daddy on the back of their Chelsea shirts, one changing hers into one, no doubt expecting to go onto the pitch to celebrate with their loving hubbys, oh dear, tee hee.

Did you see the crumpled and creased arsene in banner ? being held sheepish half heartedly, it was quite a while since that was last unfurled or held up, if at all, no doubt it will soon be thrown back into the dark corner it came out of when realisation sets in again. GR, we have seen these late season improvement in results for donkeys years under Wenger and FA Cup wins over the past 4 seasons after 10 of them without any trophies won . This season though he only managed an FA Cup win and missed out on his own and Stan's numero one trophy - the 4th place finish.Liverpool have that in the bag and I don't think despite claims by some AKB's that Kloppo would swap a dom cup win for that 4th place. Mourinho won three trophies this season if you use Wengo and AKB claims that the charity shield is one .It was noticeable however that the real celebs at the end of the Ropey Cup final were all about winning a Champions League place something that Wengo was unable to do on winning the FA Cup because he had already secured his or our place in the Ropey by finishing 5th in the Prem. I guess that this is more relevant to Stan and his stooges than Wengo winning the FA Cup is and if there is a glimmer of hope that Wenger will wish us au revoir then that could be it with the megalomaniac refusing to accept any changes and demanding that he be allowed to continue to do as he pleases with no one able to hold him to any accountability. This is unprecedented in world football no club has ever given any manager carte blanche control to run a club in the way that Wenger has been allowed to do and still demands to do. His comments about supporters blaming them for his own failures are a disgrace and in themselves are sufficient reason for him to be dismissed. If he was being successful in managing AFC then there would not be any cause for complaint - but that is not the case even by using his own previous criteria that a top 4 place was essential replacing that with celebrating an FA Cup win and now claiming that a top 4 place is not important is fooling no one other than the fools living in AKB la la land. On a personal interest note Mertesacker should have the final dedicated to him I couldnt care less about Wenger the German put in a shift and confounded his critics ( that includes me) by producing an extraordinary performance after being out for a year and having looked tbh well past it before his injury . Chelsea players themselves though looked short on their usual pace probably due to over doing the celebrating all week with Terry and co and the extra space at Wembley - the pitch is bigger that of the one at the Bridge - found them out . At 2-1 though despite all of that it was still a close result and our first goal should have been ruled out. So not quiet the big improvement that you are trying to claim by Wenger his decion to play Ospina nearly back fired and it is this sort of nonsense from him that will continue to handicap usnext season if he remains. If Stan has any ambition at all to compete for top trophies he needs to forget about the FA Cup win and show Wenger the door . We have been here before celebrating Wenger FA Cup wins and heard all of the ,this is a spring board toward success malarkey, I can't think of any sides that this was ever the case for anyway, some recent winners such as Wigan and Portsmouth actually got relegated after winning it .Usually for big clubs the Cup is only a big trophy when it makes up the double . Chelsea missed out on that but they already had the league won with two games to spare so it's not a disaster for them. For Wenger however it was everything and of course he is now trying to use the temporary euphoria of the cup final victory to keep his job and full dictatorial power at AFC. For what it's worth both Wenger and Sanchez are odds on this morning with William Hills to leave. I reckon Sanchez is a certainty to go but I will wait and see with Wenger ,fingers crossed though that the bookies have got it right.

@jjetplane, the irony is that Attwood is a director at Hamilton House Mailings Limited, a marketing company that provides media representation services (write blogs) for companies and individual clients. Do you think that he writes those 3 articles per day because he is an Arsenal fan or because he is paid to do it. I'll let you make up your own mind on that! And remember, he who pays the piper calls the tune.

Is there a chance next season could (in italics) be a bit different to previous seasons? The difference being that a genuinely new formation seems to be getting the best out of more players, we're undoubtedly not as susceptible defensively, especially on the counter-attack? My personal turning point earlier in the season came about because Wenger wasn't getting the best out of the players and the atmosphere was too toxic for it to continue. I feel slightly more sanguine on the outcome of the board meeting because if he goes then he's had a great ending and we have a fresh start, if he stays it might not be as groundhogish as normal.

Pug nose Atwood of Untold thinks the board should come down heavy on any dissent towards his favourite uncle. This little jive ass is the limit and just love the way he is so anti-media because as much as he spews forth he will forever remain a rank amateur. He hates Amy Lawrence who unlike him gets paid well for insightful professional writing. May Untold fall heavily though they are good for a laugh in that deep south feinting in the heat of religious fervour BS. The days are long gone when I supported Arsenal in any sense and Saturday was a weird one in some ways though always have been a 'best team wins' sportzfan (sic) so really enjoyed it and never thought I would say for one day Per was as good as Adams in his pomp. Next season will be different of course and no doubt pretty similar to this one. Can Wenger match JM with no CL to think about. The comparison is there for all to see and JM will no doubt be edging nearer to the top.

Great point Kev about BFG "I don't care" quote, what a performance from the German. I was just happy that Arsenal competed and that is all I ever want from a football team that I support, to be honest the kind of effort they put in yesterday is a "must have" from most teams in the lower leagues. If both teams try their best then the most skillful or the team with the extra bit of luck wins through - I am always happy with that scenario. IMO that performance might just have come from the fans getting on to players at Palace and WBA, perhaps the fans should have a go at the players more often. Gradually as the days go by that performance will raise more questions than answers. BTW Kev that does count as another trophy lifted at the Spuds ground, it does n't matter how good a season Tottenham have we always have a new angle to hammer them with, very funny indeed.

Well as usual with Arsenal the division means no fraction is entirely happy. For me I've drawn out the following from the game. 1:) it was actually a bit of a classic 2:) it's a bloody sight better feeling winning than losing a final. 3:) The hesitant Wengo and the crowd with a polite applause says it all about the relationship. 4: Wengo's very chippy response suggests protests do get to him. 5:) Tuesday won't be a total win for Wenger. He knows the relationship has also changed with the Board.

Gaz - it is difficult to separate the two, Arsenal and Wenger. Love one, hate the other. Some of the things Wenger has come out with are unforgivable - not one ounce of empathy with our fans who had every right to ask for his head after yet another season where we fell short in the big two, including a 10-2 hammering. Horrible situation which just gets worse, rather than better. Would love it if he goes but it's not looking likely is it.

Maybe that's what I need to do. I guess that'll be far easier when it's finally announced that he's staying as even now I'm holding onto the small chance that he'll go. Another thing that could help is if kroenke sold up to Usmanov. Not that I think he'd sack Wenger-far from it-just that AW would finally be under pressure to perform and would be accountable to someone other himself. Sadly that's probably not going to happen so I'll have a long hard think about what to do when an announcement is made. My biggest problem is that I really do not like him anymore and everything he says/does really annoys me.

Gaz - fully understand where you are coming from, I surprised myself by how much I wanted Arsenal to win on the day. I was sure Wenger was going to stay anyway so decided I might as well enjoy a decent Arsenal performance, once I realised they had actually turned up and were going to give Chelsea a real game. At the moment I am able to switch on or off to Arsenal depending on what is going on at the time. In a way it is not a bad place to be really - loved that winning feeling on Saturday but I no longer get sucked into the downs which, with Wenger in charge, are inevitable. D'ont really consider myself as a proper fan anymore and I doubt I will be again until Wenger leaves.

Tony Evans: First time we've not been singing from the sheet fella! I watched the game but I just could not get into it in any way shape or form. All I could think about was that us winning will strengthen Wenger's hand and he'll use it as leverage with the board to secure his new deal. I felt terrible really as I know I should have been excited and I should have been nervous at the end. Actually if truth be known there were some nerves near the end but that was mainly down to the fact I had a fiver on us at 16/1 to win 2-1!!! I'm not sure where to go right now if truth be known. I know he's going to sign a new deal anyway and I sometimes think I should just get behind him and the side again. Unfortunately I then think if all his excuses, the crap defeats, the end of season run when we're out of contention for the main prizes and I'm back to square one again. I just don't know where to go and it's driving me mad! I also have to remember that last summer I kind of gave him one last chance and said to myself if we have a similar season I'm never going to fall for it again. Just can't believe a four game tournament (I'm not calling it six games when two of the sides were no league) is going to effectively save him again. He should have been told last summer that PL and CL failure and that's it, he's gone. Sadly the whole Club panders to his whims and as far as I'm concerned he IS the Club and all chance of really competing is gone. Oh well I enjoyed my 40 years of supporting the club and had some great times but now it's time to leave to those who've fallen under his spell.

Go on slam me, I just couldn't enjoy it! I just knew a win meant 2 more years and I just can't take it anymore. So selfishly, I just wanted us to be rid of that POS manager. We played very well in fairness, some putting out their best efforts in some time, Ramsey looked like he did last summer, where the F has that been?? Wellbeck looked awesome too. But Chelsea fans must have been seething, they performed like we did at Anfield a couple of years back, and we should have been 3 up in the first 20 minutes. Nope, I just know he'll be back, so like our old friend Canada, I'm done. He's killed my passion, and without that, why bother....

jw, I felt the same way myself, my young lad put his Arsenal flag up for the first time in years and had his mates around for the match, I had a couple of neighbours around too, the wife went to the trouble of burgers hotdogs etc for everybody, the beer was flowing so I got into the occasion too for them, (and i have to say/admit I enjoyed it) it certainly wasn't for TOF i detest him as much now as I did before, his antics, strutting about, (although I didn't see much celebrating with the players from him, he seemed to be walking around looking for someone to celebrate with) celebrating with his trade mark grin sickened me but like i said i didn't let it get to me. Like you said your self just wait until the celebrating and getting moist has ceased (and he ends up still here after resigning with new celebrations from his fans celebrating that fact) and wears off and this cup has been forgottton about and the realisation sets in (yet again) that we're no further on regardless having regressed and still at square one years behind the big boys above us playing ropey football on a Thursday night with the same embarrassments and humiliations in the prem as there's been for seasons now with two second rate additions in tow, that we're told were top top qualittee, lets see who's still celebrating and as cocky then. @mbg, fair assessment but I wouldn't read that much into it. They are just a good group of players who can turn it on when they want, but don't have to because they have a boss who's a soft touch. They may respect him as a human being, but don't respect as boss or a football coach, a walkover as such. We've all had them in our professional careers. He's long past it and they know it.

equaliser, good post, I reckon the players knew this would be their last chance and they would never get another like this again if TOF stayed, this would be their last chance at/off a trophy and decided to go all out for it disregarding wenger and doing it under their own steam and know how and maybe boulds and it paid off big time. wenger out.

TOOAW , my guess is that Syrupy doesn't employ managers with ambition so that rules me out ! Although if offered 8.5m a year to do the job I might be tempted. I could easily get used to saying such things as great mental spirit ... desire... ambition ... . Wenger himself actually looked rather frustrated at the chances that were missed and subbed Danny boy before the end .United sold him because he did not score enough goals and is rather injury prone - they have been proven right. Time to offload him while some money can be recouped and to buy another striker.Oh I forgot Wenger paid millions for one who then hardly ever played and only scored a couple of goals .Also Wally when he returns from his latest injury will be like a new signing and the great thing about this is that with him always injured his returns are like signing several new players. Anyway, we scored less goals and conceded more than the top 4 sides above us in the league so things need to improve next season and relying on the current players as Wenger will do is just an exercise in futility. All of the top sides and others will make new signings and possibly become stronger . A 2-1 win in the cup final by our current players doesn't change that fact . Cup finals are soon forgotten once the new season starts.I'm expecting Sancho to start his want away antics shortly he won't even wait for the new season to find out who we face in the first Ropey Cup game on a Thursday night .

@TOOAWood, it appears suggesting that Chelseas lethargy was down to the weather and because of Ospinas selection that Arsenal handled the weather conditions better. Comical stuff that. Well done to the Arsenal players, they out fought Chelsea and wanted more. Good to see it in them, now all they need is a manager they respect and will work for consistently

Flukey 1st goal? Yep - but nothing lucky about the win that shows that overall the squad has more ability than it is normally allowed to show. With a few key signings & better coaching a title challenge would be possible. But I can't honestly say I took much pleasure from it because we all know what is going to happen on Wed/Thursday because OGL has become a sad man with an empty life. Any remaining AKBs should remember that it's a 10 month season & one-off performances are soon forgotten.

How Arsenal can pull off a performance like yesterday S but play like they did against Palace,Watford,WBA and the Spuds has to be down to motivation behind the scenes. It is very easy to be self motivated when you play at Wembley but you need a manager to do it for you for the other games mentioned and I believe Wenger does not do this. How else can you explain the many false dawn's of the past. After the Hull win we were supposed to kick on in the league but didn't.Chelsea at home this season was talked about as a coming of age for Arsenal and they would seriously challenge. If the team can play on a few occasions like they did yesterday but not do it consistently then you have to ask questions as to why.As for Welbeck a player who has a great attitude I wonder if he is being played out of position as I see him more as an attacking midfielder like Rocastle or Freddie.

I made no mention of the weather TOOAW in my comments on Simon's post. I was skeptical about his ones regarding Wellbeck and my doubts regarding him were proven right. We certainly looked sharper than Chelsea for the first 20 minutes and that was obvious .Seeing as they won the league in a canter while we finished 19 points behind them I don't really see what your point is . The dodgy first goal though being allowed to stand obviously made a difference because we only scored one more after that despite having a number of chances to do so . Wellbeck and Ozil being the two main culprits at missing chances .I could have scored from that sitter that Ozil missed . And he wants 300k a week wages ! You couldnt make it up

For those of you who are also evidently finding Gruppenfuhrer Jeff a little testy these days, it may help if I offer a little context. Jeff's wife has left him to go and live in the Gaza strip so that she can enjoy an improvement in her living conditions. He goes completely f*cking bonkers when faced with the absolute terror his his own company. Poor Mrs Jeff found his claims that he had a black-belt in origami a little tedious after he kept making 3D swastikas with discarded copies of the daily mail so she's upped and gone. Jeff has, as a result of his wife's escape, decided to become a hedonistic hermit jerking off 24 hours a day while listening to alternating speeches by Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May. One gets him up, the other down, but only big, hard, tumescent Jeff knows which one does which. Jeff is seeking help from MA (masturbators anonymous) but he can't get beyond step 1 which involves saying sorry for being such a terrible, hateful human being and an incorrigible liar. Avoid and ignore, but if he annoys you, call him out of he sh*ts himself in the most amusing of ways. The cup? Love Arsenal, hate Arsene. I still think he's already out of our faces after the board meeting this Thursday. The champagne is on ice.... JJet good vibrations man. And a bit of Jan and Dean thrown in too.

Bearing in mind they have both had the same amount of time to get adjusted to yesterday's game. Take this back to the first game of the season when your lot were more 'prepared' than us. Your comparison with us and the mighty whites down the road is spectacular to say the least. 20 years forward into 2037 is all you need and they may just be within our club that is Arsenal FC.

Tremendous performance and with the luck going our way ( the Sanchez goal was handball all day) a thoroughly deserved win. One has to ask why have we only seen this sort of display in the last game of the season. Wengers lack of grace after the game was telling. His rant about the lack of support from the fans was incredible. What was more incredible was the fact that the team downed tools and were mentally weak at a crucial point in the season for the umpteeth time in the last 10 years. Okay TOOAW I'll leave you to your celebrating with your beer .I suspect that the Chelsea players did a bit too much celebrating on the lash last week, probably not with beer though . No doubt they were convinced that the FA Cup was there for them to just turn up and win. They looked very lethargic and out of sorts. So well done to Wenger and our players in taking advantage of that. No doubt the chavs feel a little less ebullient today with it all feeling like the night after the lord mayor's ball .But let's face reality we are celebrating winning the FA Cup Wenger's 4 since 2005 - with nothing else won - while the blues are celebrating another league title win to add to the numerous other ones won during the same period that Wenger won 4 FA Cups. There is a reason why Wenger only wins FA Cups and not league titles or European Cups .So when the celebrating him winning his latest FA Cup ends on Thursday with the announcement of his new 2 year contract we should all remember that just winning FA Cups is not enough.Unless we now compare our selves with the spuds because Wenger only wins more trophies than they do in London and where we are now anyway third best in the league and not even a top 4 side anymore. Due to Wenger's mismanagement and arrogance .I said before the final that whatever the result was it should have no bearing on Wenger staying but would be used to claim this was justified if he did win it. I suspect though that the love in with Wenger will not last very long when the magic of the cup wears off like Cinderella's glass coach turning into a Pumpkin at midnight.Good old Arsene.

Watching it again from our kick off after the Chelsea equaliser, and look at the players involved. All of them have taken a hammering this year from supporters - myself included - but I'm almost prepared to believe that Giroud knew Ramsey would be making his run, by the way he jogged back after the goal as if he wasn't surprised. BFG proved why he was a highly capped international, the block against Costa my favourite. Xhaka actually made a decent fist of the role he was bought to fill. Welbeck, if only he were always fully fit, a player who can pull defences around, lovely skill before the inept Moses pulled him down. Overall, as they say, even a stopped watch tells the right time twice a day, and we showed just what is possible if the will is there. So frustrating and cannot forget the horrors of Watford, Bayern etc. In medical terms, we were in much needed remission yesterday, but the illness remains.

I actually enjoyed that game so much, it reminded me of what football used to be before the last five years set in. Credit, in part to Wenger for the victory. But no credit for him playing the victim : 'I will never forget the abuse I have received - blah blah...'. It is no more valid than his 'I have Managed a thousand games and know it all, no one can criticise me...' refrain. Both equally wrong, equally repellent. What Sanchez now does is crucial. I think he wants to go and Arsenal cannot risk a Bosman. His verdict will say more about Wenger and Arsenal's prospects under him than anything we can muster. We will see.

Yes it was a perfect ending to a shyte season under wenger, and enjoyable for us all, I still have a hangover to prove it, but am just about to do something about that, a cool magners or two or three to keep celebrating, oh how I gave it to chav mates last night so I really don't want to put a dampener on things but lets not get carried away here, at the end of the day we were the underdogs the chavs never turned up (complacency because of lowly laugh a minute Arsenal and wenger ? ) and had a man sent off, as some were saying on here all week in a one off game anything's possible and so it's proved, nothings changed whatsoever because of this, this has just papered over some very very big cracks, in fact cracks the size of a gorge, we're still the same lowly second rate Arsenal under an old egoistic arrogant past it manager, and if he stays nothing is going to change it'll be just the same next season the embarrassments humiliations lies spin, but without the FA Cup to save his arse, so lets hope TOF takes this chance that has presented itself to him again more through good fortune (again, than anything else) to piss off. @no new contract, wenger out.

Anyway ,you were too cowardly to back Arsene before the final so your gloating about the result is just a case of laugh when you are winning and completely irrelevant to me .Enjoy the Ropey Cup next season but don't wait until after the final to tell us how we should all be proud that Arsene won it for us .Hindsight is a wonderful thing but anyone can use it .Self awareness is obviously, just as with your hero Wenger , not one of your strong points. I'll wager that you have the Champers on ice to celebrate the ..Phew ! thank god for that ...shock announcement on Thursday that Arsene has signed a new 2 year contract . Boring boring Arsenal. Wenger has yet another record at the club in the way of FA Cup wins. Three FA Cups in four years is no disgrace either. The final score was way too flattering to Chelsea. It was a 5-1 performance all day long and we were so dominant that we never looked like losing. A very frustrating season ended on a massive high. Unfortunately, sanctimonious Jeff doesn't see it like that but who really cares about his opinions. His poor wife eh?????. Nevertheless, yet another trophy in the bag. Good report Kev and yes where did that come from. Once you approach the stadium you put your frustrated don't care thoughts to one side, listening to the chav singing makes winning imperative. We outplayed them and should have been 3 up at half time. Agree it does not make up for the utter crap we have seen at times but any Arsenal fan that could not enjoy that is simply not an Arsenal fan. I hope he says goodbye but if he does not it's his fault if he does not put the consistency and hunger back into the premiership and the flak that will follow. If he signs we have no other option but to support the team because we are Arsenal supporters. Yesterday was the first time for ages that I felt great about a performance. The semi line up was the spuds, city, chavs and us, no one gave us a prey but we beat city and the chavs, not Hull, not Villa, so it makes it so much sweeter and so much more impressive, and in Pers I simply could not believe what I was watching. One final point if Wenger had given his word to Ospina then we should applaud his decency in sticking to the agreement when under so much pressure, it's another question as to if such agreements should be made.

FA Cup has thrown up some great games and this and the Totts semi were simply extraordinary. How to fall back in love with Arsenal in 90 minutes and look at someone like Per with complete awe. Some incredible performances though Per for me was the kingpin. What is it with Ozil and his shooting? Too flimsy when it needs a whack and then when he puts the leather on it he becomes ordinary. Sanchez was certainly the one to take initial advantage of a totally out of it Chelsea. Makes things look interesting for next season and will it be Pep on top next time? Conti did wonders with his team but yesterday they looked ordinary and bets as to whether Moses gets shipped out pronto. Kante was perversely awful and when you think of the Terry indulgence and other sordid stories concernig player's wealth it is good to see extra egg on AB's face. Chelsea perversely did a typical Arsenal yesterday and Arsenal played like Ath. Madrid. Of course it would be a nice touch if Arsene left next week while feelings towards him are less hateful than a week ago. His language does him no favours with picking out a percieved 1% who are disgraceful and his arrogance really knows no bounds. We will see but I think the Arsenal we once loved will not be back any time soon. ps And what of Theo Mr Arsenal Walcott? How the mighty in their protected bubbles fall. Great day yesterday with the Celtic win too - two excellent finals and Conte looking to have as much homework to take home as Wenger. Expect a clear out there and here an enhanced package for the usual suspects. Cannot believe it was 15 years ago when we went to Cardiff for the Ray and Freddie show. I was an old **** then with a dose of the lagers. Yesterday it was Tulsi organic green tea and buffalo burgers. Come on Exeter! Great report Kev and don't know where we would be without you. Here's to a Corbyn win and England turning into a full blown socialist haven. Well - if Arsenal led by the awesome BFG can make Hazard non hazardous anything is possible. With the exception of the score, the first half was a throwback to the first 45 mins of the 3-0 home win against them last year. It was nice of Xhaka to turn up in place of his very average identical twin, and Ramsey who divides opinion as much as any current player also had a great game. Fair report Kevin. Just shows you what a committed, motivated team can do. Why have the players seldom performed like that this season? The team pressed in Chelsea's half right from kick off and clearly unsettled them. Once again why do we not see more of that intensity in other games? Our passing in that first half was exceptional and yes we got lucky with the first goal, but we could and should have been leading 3-0 at half time. Yes Chelsea were poor, but the way that the team battered them in that first half was a huge but very pleasant surprise. So glad Terry did not get another mawkish send off and that pratt Walcott played no part in the game. Much as I want Wenger to go and I have contributed to his 'out campaign', I do not begrudge him leaving on this high. It will be very sad for the club and supporters if he and the so called board decide he should continue for another two years. Ed ,Wenger ( yawn) was also fortunate in the semi-final against City when they had a good goal disallowed because the linesman ruled wrongly that the ball had gone out of play before the goal was scored. So two very lager slices of luck for Wenger in the two Wembley games and a run of easy earlier fixtures against modest oppo in his latest FA Cup triumph . His strutting around afterwards was hardly justified however because as someone else said he hid like a coward after the home game when he had failed to win his top 4 trophy. Will Jack be making any 'what are Tottenham ' quips is the question.I suspect however that he has more important things to worry about. However this FA Cup win does not change the fact that the club is going backwards under Wenger and the Kroenke regime. I can't see Wenger turning that around and I never draw any conclusions from winning FA Cups because clubs have been relegated shortly after doing so and winning them for donkeys years since 2005 has not seen that produce any title challenges or any trophies won in Europe by Wenger. He should be judged on that in the final analysis. You need more than a slice of luck to win the league or a trophy in Europe where such things tend to even out over the course of a campaign and factors such as the manager's tactical nous and his squad strength kick-in. I thought we should have scored more goals yesterday with Welbeck once again showing why United ditched him and I also believe that Cech would have saved the Costa goal that the midget Ospina just failed to do.He also had a couple of panicky moments that could have proved costly and what was all that play-acting about when he pretended to have got a kick on the head from Costa when TV replays showed no contact. Wenger got away with playing him though but it was a close run thing at 2-1 and that really should not have been the case with us clearly the better side. Anyway we have a rematch in August against the blues to see who wins the charity shield half a trophy at Wembley . With Thursday night Ropey Cup nights to follow. Well done Arsene !
