Giroud fuels talk of Arsenal exit

Number 12 wants more playing time if he is going to remain beyond the summer

Giroud fuels talk of Arsenal exit

The Club PR machine obviously thinks he’s staying

The immediate future of Arsenal’s French international striker Olivier Giroud has come into doubt following the player’s decision to publicly vocalise his discontent at what he perceives to be a lack of game time.

Speaking to the media ahead of his nation’s clash with England at the Stade de France, Giroud fuelled speculation that he may not be an Arsenal player come the start of the 2017-18 campaign: “It is true that I have had limited playing time but it was for a certain amount of time, it is true there were things against me. I will not settle for another year with such little playing time.

The declaration immediately led to the Frenchman being linked by bigfreebet.com to an Emirates exit, with interest from across Europe's top leagues.

The Frenchman managed a goal for every 101 minutes played last season, the second best ratio in the Premier League season as he proved a valuable option from the bench for the north London side.

West Ham United, who are seemingly unable to count upon the fitness of their £19m 2013 signing Andy Carroll, appear to be keen on pursuing a deal for the Frenchman.

The Hammers will be hoping to have overcome a frustrating maiden season at the London Stadium and capturing Giroud’s goal scoring pedigree would prove an appealing opportunity as they look to match the impressive seventh place finish that they achieved in the 2015-16 campaign.

However, the east Londoners may have to provide a sizeable financial package if they are to try and persuade the attacker away from his ambition to remain competing at the top of the table. Giroud has stated: “There is nothing fixed, but I would say that today I feel good at Arsenal.

“I have two more years on my contract, we will see what the future will be.

“The Premier League is an increasingly high-profile and contested championship, where five or six teams can potentially claim the title.

“This is why I still want to continue to win this title.”

The powerful target man has scored 98 goals since his 2012 arrival at the club but had to settle for a squad role for swathes of the past season.

Whilst Arsene Wenger’s core focus will remain on persuading Mesut Özil and Alexis Sanchez that Arsenal is still the place for them to fulfil their personal ambitions, suggestions that the Frenchman is considering alternative options to the Emirates will still be of concern for the manager as he seeks to lift his side back into the Champions League places in the upcoming campaign.

Knowing One - i know what you mean. AW has been too satisfied with OG i think. Hes never had an really effective partner up front has he and as such his contribution has gone under the radar a bit. Giroud cries out for a quick, strong nimble guy to be alongside who takes chances when they come up. I think Wally was intended to be, but i dont want to comment on him. Too annoying just to think about him.

Hi CG - hi mate. Loved Joe Baker as you did. (Baddie will be on waxing lyrical about him soon i bet!) He didnt get the recognition of his worth really did he, as Arsenal were so porous at the back and average in terms of the league positions in his time, but Baker and Strong were pretty damn good weren't they. They scored, the defence conceded type of thing!! Heskey - i used to see a lot of EH before Liverpool bought him. He was at Leics. In a closely confined stadium/pitch i used to whince at his power at times. Really rated him and ive always thought how bad it was that hes attracted so much derogatory comment down the yrs. Great pro. Really nice bloke. A real team man who with a bit more selfishness would have scored far more i think. Lukaku as a modern equivalent scores heavier but his overall game doesn't compare to Heskey in my view yet hes spoken of as if hes the real deal. EH was in a game for 90 mins and didnt ever sulk like a big silly baby like Lukaku does. Everton shd get a good deal for him if they can. Not as good as he thinks is my verdict. Flat track bully really - when he feels like it!. Hard to compare those duos really and Eastham was a player who i think i only ever saw once in a 'live' game for us, but saw him a time or 2 when he was at Stoke, but my Dad rated him highly and that was always good enough for me. Bakers up there with the best we ve had really isnt he, but everything Arsenal in the 60s has sadly always been consigned to footnotes really, yet we had some really good players. Joe had bottle, mobility and skill and in the modern day game would score a hatful im guessing v the shabby defences we see now. He wasnt even a big guy either was he so i suspect he would be a true modern day CF with all of the facets to his game that Coaches ask for these days.About 5 ft 9 ish. I had the pleasure of seeing Joe as much for Forest after he left as i did for us. He got a Div 1 runners up medal there. I suppose we have to say Sanch and Ozil are perhaps higher quality dont we if we re forced to compare. Theyve each done it at the highest levels of the game, esp Ozil. Nowhere near as likeable though.

Ron. Joe Baker was my schoolboy hero too. Back in the 60s I voted for him in the Sportsview Personality Of The Year. In those days voting was by filling in a coupon in the Radio Times, cutting it out and posting it to the BBC. I made my parents buy extra copies so that we could send in more votes. Unbelievably for me he came nowhere. Just done a bit of research on Emile William Ivanhoe Heskey. You're right he wasn't ridiculed by anyone who played with him. Or against him! On 'This Is Anfield' there's any article entitled 'Emile Heskey:Better than you remember'. In the comments section at the end there's mention of a Jamie Carragher quote. When he was asked which of the Liverpool Strikers (Owen, Fowler, Heskey) he feared the most when running at him - he said "without doubt Emile" when asked why " well whatever happens, he wins the ball or you win the ball, you get hurt" Like Giroud at times he was brilliant but at others he looked slow and cumbersome. But a good team player. Going back to the Baker days how would you compare Baker/Eastham to Sanchez/Ozil?

To be fair Ron I’m also ultra harsh on him and agree he is a decent player but not what you would call ‘elite’ and I think this fact that he is just below this level means that there always seems to be an excuse not to buy anyone better as it would mean spending serious money, btw I’m not sure Lacazette is any better than him, but someone like Aubameyang or Lewandowski could make that difference (if we could get them of course).

Giroud has a goal to game ration very close to my schoolboy hero Joe Baker who got 100 in about 160 games. We hold up Baker as one of the best of his time, not just at AFC, yet Giroud is useless? I think OJs appearance irritates many ie his f-daft bear and high hair etc. He look a bit daft but his figures suggest hes a good squad man. Thats how ive always seen him. Not of the quality to spearhead the Club to titles on his own, but damned decent to have in yr team when needed.

Get rid, if ever there was a euphemism for the teams current mediocrity it is this bloke, but no doubt missing out on Plan A Mbappe and then dithering about Plan B Lacazette or whoever he will be in the starting line come first game

Giroud is a really good player to have in the squad. Hes got better as hes got older i think. Hes increased and learned to use his physical strength better. He ll always be criticised as not being good enough but he adds a vital contribution to most games. Heskey was always ridiculed as a player in his day, but never by those who played with him.

A nice bite-sized article. I think there is no question that he will stay.
