Last season, the squad and the manager

Gooner Survey 2017 Results - Part 1

Allegri – Winner of the vote for a new manager

Ed’s note - It’s been a busy summer at Gooner Towers, so apologies that we are running this about three weeks later than planned. My thanks to Fozzy for compiling the votes to come up with the results you see below. We’ll run the survey in two parts, the concluding half tomorrow.

Section One - 2016/17 Season

Arsenal Player of the season 2016/17, First Place:
Alexis Sanchez - 89%
Laurent Koscielny - 5%
Nacho Monreal - 3%
Well, there you have it. No surprises apart from how many of you out there love the little Chilean.

Arsenal Player of the season 2016/17, Second Place:
Laurent Koscielny - 46%
Nacho Monreal - 19%
Alexis Sanchez - 9%
Mesut Özil - 9%
Kos deserves his accolade for doing his best to hold the defence together when life got a bit hairy, although something tells me that a few of you voted for Sanchez twice.

Arsenal Player of the season 2016/17, Third Place:
Nacho Monreal - 21%
Laurent Koscielny - 20%
Mesut Özil - 14%
Olivier Giroud - 12%
I’ve broken with tradition on this one because it was all a bit close and decided that Scorpion Man should get a look in with his own Fourth Place Trophy.

Worst Arsenal Player of 2016/17:
Francis Coquelin - 25%
Theo Walcott - 21%
Kieran Gibbs - 15%
A bit harsh on The Coq. The poor bloke did his best and didn’t hide, unlike the runner-up who ought to become a magician due to amazing trick by making himself disappear.

Most frustrating Arsenal Player of 2016/17:
Mesut Özil - 29%
Theo Walcott - 20%
Aaron Ramsey - 18%
This motley trio had to fight it out between them, and you could make a good case for all three. So much ability but they regularly managed to keep it hidden.

Player you wanted to see used more last season:
Lucas Perez - 60%
Rob Holding - 17%
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 10%
That’s a lot of votes for Perez, who never let us down when he made his rare appearances. I suppose he would have got more games had he been Wenger’s love child.

Most improved player in the last twelve months:
Rob Holding - 61%
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 24%
Nacho Monreal - 7%
We live in hope that we’ll be seeing a lot more of Rob Holding next season, likewise The Ox if we can hang on to him.

Best team performance 2016/17:
Arsenal v Chelsea (FA Cup Final) 2-1 - 60%
Arsenal v Chelsea 3-0 - 32%
Arsenal v Man City (FA Cup Semi Final) 2-1 - 5%
Oh what fun is was that the two beatings of the Odious Chavs were such memorable occasions! And that unexpected Cup Final performance will live with us for a long time.

Worst team performance 2016/17:
Crystal Palace (A) 0-3 - 32%
Bayern Munich (H) 1-5 - 20%
Bayern Munich (A) 1-5 - 14%
That was a miserable Monday evening when we got turned over by Fat Sam’s lot, of all people. That was when we reached rock bottom. A horrible experience.

Best Arsenal goal of the season 2016/17:
Giroud v Crystal Palace (H) - 52%
Özil v Ludogorets (A) - 36%
Sanchez v West Ham (A) 1st goal - 4%
We gave voters ten goals to choose from, although there was always the “other” column to catch any personal favourites. Scorpion Man took the honours to brighten up our New Year’s Day at Ashburton, however I love one of the comments “Ramsey in the Cup Final, you dummies”. I can’t disagree.

Section Two - The Squad and the Manager

Do you consider Arsenal have progressed this season in terms of football performance compared to the previous season?
Yes - 11%
No - 89%
Well, that was rather conclusive.

Do you think Arsenal's 2016/17 transfer windows activity (Xhaka, Holding, Mustafi and Perez) was:
Very good - 3%
Good - 30%
Okay - 46%
Poor - 17%
Very poor - 4%
A jolly set of mixed opinions with most votes going for okay. It looks like that Perez is packing his bags so it will be interesting to see how the other three fare next season.

Which new player impressed you the most?
Rob Holding - 67%
Granit Xhaka - 16%
Skhodran Mustafi - 11%
It was a shame that Wenger didn’t have the bottle to play Holding until the last knockings of the season. At last we can now all see his potential.

Were you satisfied by the performances of the new signings overall?
Yes - 58%
No - 42%
I’m sure that the pendulum swayed back and forth on this question as the season played out.

Which of the players signed do you think is going to improve the most next season, assuming they remain?
Granit Xhaka - 54%
Rob Holding - 39%
Skhodran Mustafi - 4%
There’s a lot more good stuff to come from Xhaka and Holding, so bring it on!

Which ONE area of the team do you think needs addressing the most urgently?
Attack - 55%
Midfield - 23%
Defence - 17%
Goalkeeper - 6%
Over half of you voted for attack. Will Lacazette be able to do the business?

Which one player would you most like Arsenal to buy this summer?
1 - Kylian M'Bappé (Monaco)
2 - Alexandre Lacazette (Lyon)
3 - Thomas Lemar (Monaco)
4 - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Dortmund)
I have just ploughed through the 2,000 nominations and have ended up with a complete Who’s Who? of worldwide professional footballers. M’Bappe seems a popular choice although I like the answer from one poor soul who suggested whoever is bought, Wenger will screw it up.

Bejesus mbg. Desperate times for desperate people. Two thirds thought that santi was the reason we didn't win the league not Let Boss. 6 out of 10 felt that the no trophy FA cup thingy was 'match of the day'. Giroud, as I have previously stated, is the best target player in the world hence " goal of the year". Onto us signing a player??? Striker or attack?? .. Lacazette. And the bargain of the season in which only 4% said no. Kolasinac. Freebie. Thanks Arsene. 2 more years can only be good for the Arsenal and long may the silverware continue.

@ mbg - if that's how you genuinely feel you should take a break from Arsenal for the good of your health and sanity. Seriously.

Running down contracts is not the way business is done in football. You either sign them up again with plenty of time remaining or sell them. If no one will buy them or they refuse to leave, that suggests you are overvaluing and/or overpaying them. To claim otherwise is a transparent defence in an attempt to normalise what Wenger has allowed to happen through arrogance and neglect - simply because it is him that allowed it to happen and it is him attempting to normalise it. Were Wenger to have a policy of always signing up players with 2 years remaining or selling them, then his same defenders would talk about the foolhardiness of doing otherwise, not postulate weak car analogies. Basically, whatever Wenger does is right. And they wonder why they're called AKBS.

An Excellent survey especially for the WOB's, still a few halfwits who can't see past TOF's lower regions but that was always expected, who was the AKB who said lets wait for the survey ? We want wenger out.

Ha ha Petergooner, sorry fella, and happy birthday to you, just to give you an indirect birthday present. Alexis worth £50 mill? Perhaps. Walks away for nowt next year? Perhaps. When bought and given his contract his final year was costed in as part of that price. You buy a player and give him a 4 year contract in the knowledge that at the termination of said time he walks away. That is the way business is done. I am not an accountant or financial whiz but understand basics. I know if I buy a car with a 10 year life expectancy and use it for that time it is then just scrap. Occasionally someone will give you a lump for it so you sell, unless it still serves you for your job and a new one wouldn't necessarily. You have to compare like for like. We want him for his final year and that is part of his initial cost. A £50 mill man for 4 years means one year which we would lose in a sale is costed at £12.5 mill, so that £50 mill becomes £37.5 next year, but we have had his services. If he refuses to sign a new contract he plays at his current rate. I have no idea really what that is but perhaps £7 mill p.a? A new deal mooted at £250k per week grosses £13 mill p.a, a saving of £6 mill. That means if the £50 mill sale price is correct then we shouls lose closer to £30 mill rather than the £50 mill everyone gets upset at. Still a lot it's true, but for continuity and stability to get back into the CL next term could be enough to whet the appetite of SK, don't you think? It might just persuade me. Anyway that is a Virtual Online Gooner Birthday prezzie of £20 mill. Spend it wisely. Sorry must go, the observational analysis of the Eggman has chased me away, ha ha.

i think those results are way misleading. The vast majority are happy with Mr Wenger and all that goes on at the Club. Its quitre sad really depending on yr point of view but its a reflection of the fact that supporting a Club these days in the modern game is far, far different to what it used to be. Expectations for most are not too high. For those who still go to the N7 theatre, its the 'Emirates Experience' that floats their boat and the more bearded celeb looking footballers they see there, the better the experience is. What other Clubs fans would raise a banner about a players pet dogs? Its pathetic there, really is.

A further OG survey question: Badarse writes a long, heartfelt statement that he'll no longer comment on OG. Do you believe he'll embarrassingly crawl back within days? Yes - 100% No - 0%.

Not too much in there that I'd disagree with in terms of the analysis on players, goals, matches etc. Slightly surprised the vociferous anti-Wenger sway on the forum here isn't entirely replicated in the results though.

Dud: So Pete, what would you do with these players what run their contracts down?-Pete: Well Dudley, my unfortunate and parasitic little friend I would beat them.-Dud: What in a race Pete?-Pete: No Dud. I'd take the new contract and say, "You had better sign this, or I'll beat you with it." Then I'd roll the contract up like a big stick and stand over them threateningly, with it poised to strike.-Dud: Poised to strike?-Pete: Yes, in a most intimidating fashion, Dud.-Dud: I'd have to stand under them threateningly, Pete.-Pete: True Dudley, you are a diminutive little chap, aren't you?-Dud: Thanks Pete.-Pete: They have to know you mean business and you show them who is boss.-Dud: But Pete, they may just say no and take the contract off you, then beat you with it.-Pete: That is true my 'diminutive and wiser by the day' little friend. That would be a problem.-Dud: So really there is nothing you can do if a player knows he is playing well and in demand, unlike a player who is doing so-so and happy to sign.-Pete: Again Dud, I find myself in awe at your comprehension. You have amazing foresight.-Dud: No Pete, I can't see four sights I can only see once, though if you hit me on the head with a rolled up contract I could have double vision.-Pete: I may just do that Dudley.-Dud: Do you think this might become a trend in football now? Just stalling for a new contract if you are playing well?-Pete: That is quite likely Dud. Now come on. We must go and sign our new television contract.

Incredible that one third of respondents think Cazorla alone would've been the difference between 5th and 1st last season... and that a third are glad Wenger got 2 more years. 1 in 10 even want him to carry on even if there's 2 more years of more of the same... I actually reckon it's more than that. When 2019 comes around they'll be too frightened to let him go. And this is just OG readers, all those percentages will be far higher in the general support. The mindset and levels of cluelessness of so many modern supporters never ceases to amaze.

Can't believe there are some that still back Wenger in ANY way whatsoever. What a complete mess him and the other two parasites have made of this transfer window. They have scuppered any chances of footballing success yet we can rest assured that their personal bank balances will be bulging bigger than ever - and let's not forget that is ALL our club exists for these days. I'm waiting now for Sanchez to be sold to Man City for a ridiculously low fee given that we f***** his contract up and let it run down. Anyone remaining that still believe Wenger and the board have the clubs best interests at heart- you are the biggest mugs going
