Are the wagons closing in on Wenger?

Press stories suggest that the manager will, after all, be judged in May

Are the wagons closing in on Wenger?

Things aren’t looking as fresh and vibrant as they once did...

There seems to have been a recent change in perception regarding Wenger’s remaining tenure at Arsenal. This has emerged on cue with the recent bad form. However this time it’s different, for it’s not fanbase upwards, nor so much the noise from social media, but appears to be a “proxy campaign” via the traditional media outlets and highly likely to have originated from a Board member or group of directors. Questioning how much longer Wenger will stay, The Mirror, Sun, Mail and others are running stories from their senior football correspondents.

What is more, the rumours of boardroom splits from last year are being reported as fact by John Cross in a recent Mirror column. Across the media the inference is clear. If Wenger fails to make top four, his contract may be terminated a year early.

The gamble from Wenger to approach Stan Kroenke last year was a two edged sword. Indeed it did show his strength and Ivan Gazidis’ relative weakness. But the tail wagging the dog scenario would not play out well amongst boardrooms, financial backers and potential investors. At some point for their own reputation, the board, directed by Kronke may have to show teeth.

An immediate reason for this is an interesting story running in the Mail that Nike and Adidas are concerned about Arsenal’s capacity to play in the Champions League. If Arsenal fail two years on the trot, dare we negotiate with these potential multi million sponsors with a message we’re just going to try for a third time with the same manager? A big risk, no doubt.

As you may guess my knowledge of billionaires is pretty limited. I guess they share the same foibles as all of us. I do wonder though whether Stan’s so called love of Wenger will suffer a drop to the worst in the Top 6 tier and a long term loss of Champions League?

Events are now showing that the greater risk may be honouring Wenger’s contract.

Your very right about him leaving a watermark at the club. He's driven many old school gooners out and we now have a fanbase that is barely recognisable from what it once was, playing in a stadium that I can't bear to go to. Those will be my over riding memories of his reign. Yes I will always appreciate the early days and doubt I will ever see football like that again but I'm sorry thats been outweighed for me by all of the things I mention above.

Ron, I think the point remains - if he won't resign what choice is there but to end it 'badly'? It's up to him to end it 'well'. If he won't accept it's time to go, what's the other option, we endure years more of his crap until he's ready to go himself just to not look 'bad'?

Bard and lads - ha ha. I just think that after 20 odd yrs and despite our all wanting his reign to end for a good few years, to end it now in a bad way will really look bad for the Club. Its not like hes been there for 2 seasons and failed abysmally. Hes had a lot of actual and relative success and we shouldnt forget that. His time has made a massive watermark on the club whatever we think about things now, in this moment. The club needs to end it properly. It can still do that. He needs to go and ideally he needs to accept that. I think he does and he ll go this Summer in the full knowledge of who the new guy is. I could be wrong. I often am.

Ron I get the argument about whether he says or goes but whats this 'you dont want him treated shabbily' stuff. He has been adequately rewarded, some would say overly so. He doesn't run the NHS or the local golf club. He's in the top class sports business. You are rewarded if you win and if not get someone else in. Thats the way it should be. You dont get a medal if you come 4th in the Olympics. He wont be 'shabbily treated' if he resigns. But if he wont go then he needs to be sacked end of. Bloody hell Ron you've been watching too many episodes of Eastenders. Next up you will be telling us its only right he gets a contract extension because he's good to animals.

I hope he's on his way this summer and I think we're way beyond worrying about it being done 'properly' etc. If he won't go in good grace then he should be crowbarred out. But I do wonder if the changes are simply what Gazidis can do around Wenger, knowing he's this immovable object at the centre of things with a job for life. Though it would fly in the face of all sanity and reason, even with a trophyless 6th place finish, you could still see Kroenke offering a contract extension. Obviously any Arsenal rather than Arsene supporter hopes not.

Im still not buying into all this ' hes being sidelined' etc. Whatever changes are happening there are going on with Arsenes knowledge and consent as i see it inc bringing in a new Coach as and when that happens. Anything else is paper talk. AW will leave Arsenal in a decent fashion, be it this Summer or next. Hes not being sacked. As for John Cross, the self styled, everybody likes me, smiling great Arsenal guru, hes like the weather. Changes when it suits. Hes no more informed than any other overweight drunken London hack. AFC arent going to behave abominably towards Wenger and to be honest as much as ive wanted him to pack it in for the last 7 years, he shouldn't be treated shabbily either.

It's good to see the sponsors lifting their heads out of the trough, and according to some we're a big club, the only thing big about this club is it has a big over rated stadium (that will be left behind and be behind the times when spurs are finished, and if rumours are right is crumbling in places, ironic isn't it ) and a bunch of second rate players who wouldn't get anywhere near a proper big club, and an old past it overrated manager who thinks he's world class, and paying himself wages to that effect after bringing un down to the level we're at. wenger out.

Bard is right. Wenger wouldn't go voluntarily if he was 99. But he will have to go if time is called. The recent senior appointments by passing Wenger - and they self evidently did - indicate that the tide has turned. Arsenal is ceasing to be a Convenience Store for AW, in as much as it ever was. If Ancelotti is on standby and those sponsorship deals are wavering, Kronke will look at the revenue stream and act; in that charming way of his. And charming or otherwise, he will be right.

Difficult to predict Mark. Arsenal are increasingly an irrelevance in top football terms. Having spent £200m or close to it and still languishing in 6th place wont please investors. Wenger is nothing if he isn't stubborn and I can only see him getting the sack. He will surely believe he should see out his contract.
