The number of tickets sold for the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi final second leg between Arsenal and two time European champions Wolfsburg has risen to 45,000.
Arsenal travel to Germany on Sunday for the first leg in a repeat of last season’s quarter final, an unsuccessful one for the Gunners. The home leg of that tie was watched by just 5,000 fans at Emirates Stadium, so the contrasts just over a year on are simply staggering.
Ten years ago, the two sides met at Meadow Park in front of fewer than 2,000 spectators as Wolfsburg ran out 2-1 winners. In less than two weeks time, at least 45,000 will be in attendance as Arsenal try to reach their second European final.
Arsenal confirmed the most recent number of tickets sold with a video on social media in which Swiss defender Noelle Maritz labelled Arsenal fans “incredible”, but saying “I think we can get more. How about… sixty thousand?”
There is no reason why this couldn’t happen, with the fixture taking place on a Bank Holiday before Arsenal men take on Chelsea the following day. Arsenal have already broken attendance records this season, so a sold out Emirates Stadium really is not out of the picture.
