Arsenal Face Tough Task In Milan

What’s the likelihood of a fifth consecutive defeat for Arsene Wenger’s side tomorrow evening?

Arsenal Face Tough Task In Milan

Happier times – Victory in the San Siro in 2008

It may be somewhat of a surprise, given the form of the two sides, but for tomorrow evening’s Round of 16 Europa League first leg match, the Milan vs Arsenal betting odds do not currently have the home side as odds on to win the game.

Perhaps there is enough belief that the Gunners’ run of defeats simply has to stop somewhere, and the nature of the tie means that a draw is a perfectly acceptable result. Looking a little further back than the last four matches, in the first leg of the pair of two legged-ties played by Arsenal in this calendar year, the results were highly creditable. The opening game of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea saw a more resilient display than many others in this campaign, as the visitors kept a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge.

And in the previous round of this competition, the first match in the tie against Ostersunds in Sweden witnessed a comfortable 3-0 victory for Arsene Wenger’s side. So, just perhaps, a first leg victory for the Italians isn’t a given.

Arsenal, historically, have enjoyed mixed fortunes when visiting Milan’s home stadium, the San Siro. Their first trip, under George Graham for the second leg of the 1994/95 European Super Cup saw them suffer defeat to Milan 2-0, after a goal-less first leg at Highbury. Their subsequent trips have all been during Arsene Wenger’s tenure, and all in the Champions League. The first was in November 2003, although it was to play the city’s other team, Inter. However it was a memorable occasion, as Arsenal, in the Invincibles season, won by an incredible 5-1 scoreline. This was in the group phase of the competition, but the result was key to their progress after a slow start in the early matches, including a 3-0 defeat at home to Inter.

The good times continued in their next visit, this time to face Milan in March 2008. After a goal-less first leg at the Emirates, Arsenal triumphed 2-0 against the then Champions League holders, an incredible result for a relatively young team. Of course, it merely delayed the team’s exit at the hands of Liverpool in the next round, but on the evening in question, it felt like a seismic shift. Interestingly, given recent speculation, the Milan manager at the time was a certain Carlo Ancelotti. Mind you, Ancelotti was in charge at Bayern when they whipped the Gunners 10-2 on aggregate in 2017. They do say revenge is a dish best eaten cold…

The last visit has less happy memories, again to face Milan in a last 16 Champions League tie. It was four years on, in 2012, and this time a first leg. Arsenal were ripped a new one, as they suffered a 4-0 beating. At the time it was Arsenal’s heaviest ever European defeat. They raised hopes in the return leg by going 3-0 up in the first half, but it was not to be.

So a mixed record, but a respectable one, of two wins in four visits. But history counts for nothing, although both Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey played in the 2012 game.

Arsenal’s main concern will be the form Milan are showing under their former player (who they faced in 2008) Gennaro Gatuso. Since taking over in late November last year, the Rossoneri have only lost two matches in 16, one of those in a meaningless final Europa League group match in Croatia (Milan had already secured first place in their group). Their last defeat was before Christmas.

Gattuso has returned the once famed miserly reputation to the Milan defence. In the eleven matches played so far in 2018, only three goals have been conceded. Significantly, the team, like Arsenal, have played two two-legged cup ties. In those four games, not a single goal went in against them.

So, there is little argument that Milan have become galvanized, organized and efficient under a fresh regime, something that Arsenal fans can only dream of at the moment. Far be it from me to suggest how you might spend your money, but the current price of 11/10 on a Milan victory in the first leg is looking pretty generous to these eyes.

Just got back in the van from Milan...another performance that has knocked us here sideways. I saw a group of players that were playing as a team... who understood what to do. Their commitment, fight and spirit were there for all to see. They had a game-plan, and executed it to perfection. This team wants to win the Europa League. They were all up for it. At half-time we were speechless... didn't know what to say, but at full-time it was even worse. A great win, but so many more questions to ask now. A few years ago we went to Dortmund away and saw a performance that ranks with some of the greatest I have seen by The Arsenal. The style of play had changed completely, as had the mentality. It was as if a "new" team were playing, with a different direction. It was the same last night. As if the players had decided to take control. It didn't last long after the Dortmund game. The players returned quickly to their collective idiocy, inspired by our Leader. Whatever happened last night ( and in Dortmund ...and I believe it was a mini "players-revolt" ) it shows that this group of players can play as a team, and can be successful. But there is one thing holding this Club back...and it was plain to see last night, as our Lord and Saviour strolled about with his ridiculous Dark Lord/Count Dracula cape on... If Wenger doesn't get sacked and somehow sees out his contract and moves upstairs as a Board Member or a "Director of Football" we will never be rid of this cancer. Before this game I thought there was a chance that this game would be the end. We would get turned over and Wenger would fall on his sword. Now I see Wenger has pulled another rabbit out of his magic hat, as a win against that famous Milan soccer team from Italy will go down well with Kroenke, and the Bank.

ToOaW - you support Spurs stop the ‘We are the Arsenal’ there is no ‘We’ abut you and the rest of the site. You’ve so far succeeded in convincing the site you support Spurs. A brilliant achievement I have to say. Almost up with Jameeson’s self defeating WOB title I’m happy for the players not the manager. Glad you understand you’re disliked . And that Milan team was supposedly on a 'good run'? Doesn't say a lot for current Serie A if they've afforded the opposition that much room between the defence and midfield and still managed to put together a string of wins. Admittedly rather like Arsenal they've not had a brilliant season, but having also just reached their cup final, was expecting a bit better than that. If only WE had been playing Juve this week so AW couldn't wriggle off the hook temporarily for the umpteenth time. Then again we may not have had our best result of the season last night !

For one second, do not underestimate the quality of that performance. Statistically, Milan were no mugs and the San Siro has been other teams downfall. In a dark hour, Arsene produced a quality, sensible, productive coaching performance. He and the team have answered (or stuck up two fingers at the disgraceful supporters who claim to be Gooners) his call. A brilliant performance and I will give credit where credit is due. Just Typical isn’t it, Wenger gets yet another get out of jail card! Still as Spurs found out last night it isn’t over until the fat lady sings, or in their case the old lady! Wenger’s Arsenal are bound to be either more gung-ho in the return leg, or think they have already won the tie, thereby giving AC Milan plenty of opportunities to get the away goals they now need. So, don’t write the tie off just yet, as we know how good Wenger can be at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory! Seems crazy to be so against your own club, but desperate times call for desperate measures! If the club had already announced Wenger is leaving at the end of the season, or had been sacked, then of course I would want Arsenal to win the Europa Cup. Therein lies the conundrum a lot of us are battling with, fearing if Arsenal end up winning the Europa cup, it also guarantees more years of Wenger!

Im not too bothered about Jack. His injuries seem to have affected his zip and he looks heavy and laboured to me. With better coaching he might have been the real deal. I think the enthusiasm for him is because he seems to care as compared to the rest of them who clearly dont. It also harks back to an earlier era when players played for the club and the fans. Now they pay lip service to it but as many have written most are just mercenaries. Couldnt care less about tonight frankly.

Jason - good post. As a supporter for a similar period of time it made me think as well. For me it's the memories (good and bad) of matches; times spent with your mates before, during and after games; winning trophies after barren spells (e.g. FA Cup in 1979 and the league in 1989) and simply being The Arsenal. Re: Exeter's comment about the badge, if my memory serves me right, it was unveiled before a home game vs Southampton and despite the free t-shirts that were given out was roundly booed by everyone, me included. It's difficult to assesse any player, including Wilshire, at AFC whilst they have such a bad, broken down old coach. The most important thing about Wenger going now is it would give a chance for the last 2 months of the season to see who can be rehabilitated, who's been too Wengerised and who is just rubbish anyway. The summer we won't know which of them is worth keeping until next season is underway. Not that I think Wenger will go then either, though I hope Milan can nudge him a bit further that way in just a few hours.

Jason - the proper badge was changed for a cartoon badge and Jack Wilshire was making Wenger-like excuses after Man C plus is not likely to be there much longer. I had narrowed it down to the name and the colours, but as you point out, the red + white is used less and less. So just the name is left then.

I've supported Arsenal for 40 years and I was thinking today, just what there is left to support. I detest the owner, chairman, and the manager. Even the players don't really warrant any support with the amount of effort they put it. I've narrowed it down to basically The Badge and Jack Wilshere. Stan Kroenke has ultimately destroyed everything that this club used to stand for. Even the proud and iconic colours of red shirts with white sleeves barely gets used these days in what can only be for marketing reasons. Along with the most expensive ticket prices (probably in the world) the Arsenal values that Wenger bangs on about are just a distant memory. The club as we new it has changed for ever.

  49. markymark

    Mar 07, 2018, 17:31 #107797

Peter Wain - winning the Europa league would mean Wenger knocking on Stan’s hotel door and saying , I did it Stan despite all the problems Ivan caused me I did it. Over a glass of finest Bordeaux Stan would go oh Shucks, here’s to another 3 years. The thought of this is simply hideous. I think there’s actually a possibility of someone losing the plot and bringing the support into disrepute . All the evidence points to Wenger clinging on wherever possible . The French journo I quoted in previous article has a view that Wenger is scared of potential unemployment. He will not go unless the adult conversation is -> you must go. I’m afraid wanting Arsenal to win and Wenger to go are not a realistic proposition. I am hoping we get whacked at the Emirates so the Wenger out chants are heard.

You have to embrace the paradox of wanting Arsenal to lose in order to be successful in the future. The bar is so very, very low for Wenger. One win anywhere seems to wipe the slate clean again for so many, then on the mediocrity goes. Need the team to keep losing and losing until even he is forced out.

The days when the really big clubs could face relegation - think Man U in 1974 - have long past. There is always plenty of dross down there at the other end of the table to keep us safe. My fear would be that we slide into the mid table, the 7th to 13th/14th block: Everton style. That could well happen - given a couple of seasons more under the current regime. Sad to admit it, but I also hope we lose - and lose heavily - for the long term future of the club.

Peter - unfortunately I don't believe you can have it both ways. Arsenal winning and Wenger leaving do not belong in the same sentence. The only way Wenger will be forced out is by Arsenal continuing to lose matches. As Gaz says it is a sad situation, but I see no alternative - I certainly do not trust the board to act unless they really have to and there is no way on earth that Wenger will do the right thing and resign.

That 2012 game; oh lordy. Mr Waverley invited me round to UNCLE HQ in New York to watch the game 2-0 down at HT and he told me that surely The Arsenal will just shut up shop and settle for damage limitation? Well no, the formation and tactics were the same in the 2nd half too. Mr Waverley told me it's the definition of insanity to carry on and on expecting a different result. Mr Waverley knows a thing or two.

GR the owner is the real problem. Yes AW needs to go but its the owner who runs the club. Its all bollox these who says AW does. Utter rubbish.

it is now pointless until Wenger goes, so hoping for a defeat.having said that Wenger still refuses to go. The only good thing about that is it highlights how poor our owner is.

I hope we win. I want Wenger out but this is my club and I always want us to win. Having said that I do not believe that we can win as the players are devoid of determination passion and commitment. The next few years look to be very difficult and without major change I think we could go down. Wenger thinks that tinkering will do the job but it will not. We need at least ten players and lots of departures. We also need new coaches and a defensive remodelling. It is no use changing all the defence without changing the coaching and the organisation. SO win on Thursday but Wenger out now. The board is irrelevant only Stan matters and he needs to go as well.

How wonderful would it be to win the Europa and then have a new manager to tackle the league and Champikns Legaue next season. Sadly we all know that winning the Europa would most likely mean (at least) another year of Wenger - another 5th-6th (7th? 8th?) in the league and another early humiliation by a CL big fish. How can you back your club to win a completion when it means prolonging the overall decline and mediocrity of your club?

i think there is a risk we get absolutely muellered in milan. emotions will be higher now due tragedy of former Players sudden death. Gattuso is a Monster and will seen Wenger & his lost Boys as Lambs for slaughter. Im not even sure Arsenal can win any more games now this season. i think the Dam has burst.

Always hard to win there but im sure those of us who check out the Italian league quite often will say that Milan arent a brilliant side. Over 2 legs tho, its hard to see Arsenal doing much. PS Juve to tip the Spuds out too.

Watching PSG game last night I noted a couple comments by the commentators that says it all about where Arsenal are. 'Zidane will most likely have to win the CL to save his job'. 'Emery is on course for the treble but its unlikely to save him from the sack'. And Arsenal ? Well as long as we stay above Burnley in 6/7th all is rosy in the Wenger garden.

Ditto Tony E. Sad it’s come to this but if you want Wenger out it’s the only way. Sadly I expect him to use up another of his enormous amount of managerial life’s by getting a result. The agony continues...

I genuinely hope we get stuffed out of sight. These are unprecedented times in that we have a deluded manager that thinks he is bigger than the club and a board that are setting the bar so low a champion limbo dancer would struggle to get under it! I want results pressure to keep building as that is the only thing to my mind that will finally lance the boil that is Wenger once and for all.
