Keepers and a centre half on the radar

Mislintat’s targets will see Arsenal rebuild from the back

So, another Premier League campaign has finished, with this one being slightly different for Arsenal fans. While it was probably expected that they would finish outside the top four, fans probably didn’t expect Arsene Wenger to call it a day as manager, and preparations should already be underway ahead of next season. While the main focus needs to be on who will replace Wenger in the dugout, The Gunners also need to look at bringing in some fresh faces on the playing side too and building from the back would be a great start.

There’s no denying that Peter Cech, 35, has been a great goalkeeper throughout his career, but with more errors creeping into his game, Arsenal need to look for a new number one ahead of the 2018/19 campaign. Either Cech, or David Ospina, would provide solid back up but a new first choice keeper is a must. It may be hard to tempt a world class keeper such as Jan Oblak to the Emirates due to the lack of Champions League football but someone such as Jack Butland from relegated Stoke City could be a shrewd signing.

Arsenal have also had problems at centre half this season, conceding 51 goals over the course of the campaign. Questions have been asked of the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and the now long-term absentee Laurent Koscielny over the 2017/18 season and Arsenal need to strengthen here too, as a matter of urgency. There have been rumours of a move for Turkish centre-back, Caglar Soyuncu, who currently plies his trade in Germany with SC Freiburg. While he may not be the finished article just yet at the age of 21, he has shown great promise, and he alongside another recruit who has a bit more experience could provide the ideal combination.

With Sven Mislintat heading up the recruitment side of things at the Emirates these days, it’s highly likely he already has a list of potential new signings, with moves for a goalkeeper and defenders high on the agenda. He’s proven in the past that he has a real eye for talent, and while Arsenal don’t currently have a manager in place ahead of next season, the Arsenal board should trust him with funds if the club are to start moving in the right direction once again.

The World Cup could also be ideal in recruitment sense for The Gunners too, with stars often born at international tournaments; and sports news sites like Betting.com are ideal for fans to get all the latest news on who is shining at the tournament. While this often sees a player’s price sky rocket, Mislintat is likely be heading to Russia to cast his eye over potential targets, and he may be able to pick up a gem or two for his latest employers. Wolfsburg keeper, Koen Casteels, is said to be one player that the former Dortmund recruiter is said to have recommended so far ahead of the summer window. It should certainly be an exciting time for Arsenal fans as they get set to embark on a new era.

markymark, they just still can't let go, can they ? they're probably still secretly hoping their bumbling idiot messiah is coming back, with his desk still not cleared and all that, we all know how they like their little comfy blanket, especially for sitting on. WGOAB.

I think Emery is a better bet than Arteta especially as we appear broke at the moment.

ToOaW / ToOuE it was only Baddie and I being friendly, , a little peck on the cheek no more than that . I’m sure he’s still your bestest mate. I wouldn’t dream of getting between your passionate cyber bromance. TTFN

A Cornish - rather oddly as well he’s chosen to mount this strange cyber storm on an unrelated thread as well. Would have been slightly more relevant to have actually started an attack on my actual posting. I think ToOaW’’s jubilation over an Arteta free Arsenal caused a trip to the pub with predictable results . Yes ToOaW I did actually quite like Arteta

TOOAW/TOOUE. What's your problem? markymark writes an article based on what we've all been reading about and discussing. Your hero Badarse posts a 'well done' message. Markymark thanks your hero Badarse. Why are you now giving him a hard time? Can we instead have your views on our new manager please.

Coming to all good bookshops near you.... The Mikel Arsenal Managers years 2018. By markymark. Just admit you made a fool of yourself by committing to someone who was never getting the gig. You had to make a last minute adjustment to your post but it's an egg splattered moment for sure. Admit it. Your love affair was rather premature. Manchester needs you Narky boy. TTFN.

ToOaW - wrong about what ? I quite liked the sound of Arteta , Unai I’m really not sure about , as I mentioned he may be exceptionally good but as Andy pointed out his defensive record isn’t brilliant and the Barcelona 2nd leg game was frankly horrific. No Spanish clubs picked him up I notice. He apparently obsesses over watching football, staying up to 2am. If he’s excellent, great , he’ll get my full backing of course and I would hope he’ll have a 3 season spell to prove his worth. But ...... I am worried.

Sky sports saying Arteta withdrew after not receiving assurances over transfer policy. He wanted a veto So sounds like Emery was happy to oblige within the Mstinlat , Sanhelli set up

ToOaW - I would have been ok with Arteta , obviously something’s happened last minute . Emery may be very good , got a bad feeling he could be another Wenger ( last 10 years ) Now do we have to keep on going though this tiresome game just as we were all getting in so well . There is a host of your postings saying Wenger would chose his time , Wenger wouldn’t be sacked . Ps the comment about it being announced today well... seems news is breaking today so I think the souce ( not me was sort of correct ) I added potential for Arteta as this being Arsenal you never know.

markymark; the bottom line is that after an 'exhaustive process' we have Emery. The truth is we were turned down by the big hitters and it appears Arteta wasn't keen on limited transfer funds so it seems to me we got the best of the rest. I dont have a problem with him. He has a pretty good record and is a good coach. Lets give it a go and see how we do. Lets have a bit of positivity. The reality is we are a second tier club punching well below our weight.

Narky boy. Just admit for once you made a very, very big mistake. You fell in love with Arteta and admitted it too. Now only 2 posters on here had reservations about appointing Mikel. Myself (115452) and Reality Cech (115595). Badarse and Bard can also be be seen to be reluctant in your 100% lovefest and 'inside info' that you had. Take your family up to Manchester fella as I'm sure Mikel, Pep and the Gallacher brothers will love people like you. Oooppps.

Don’t buy that Arteta withdrew, Emery has won 3 European trophies and the French treble last season! Not a difficult choice between those two to be honest.

  15. markymark

    May 21, 2018, 21:19 #109886

Bard - are you hearing Arteta withdrew ? Interesting perhaps he thought along the same lines as Ron and thought the gig could ruin him. This obviously has had a major twist as apparently the players have been thrown by the latest announcement . Sounds like both sides talked themselves out of the appointment after initially about to seal the deal .

    May 21, 2018, 21:17 #109885

My big worry with Emery is his defensive record. In his 3 seasons at Sevilla he conceded on average 50 La Liga goals in the 38 games: that's as bad as Wenger. His record was much better at PSG but that's a softer league. We need somebody who can seriously tighten us up at the back. I'm not sure Dick is the right guy.

ToOaW the trouble is you said Wenger wouldn’t be sacked ,and wasn’t sacked and would see out his contract -> see your comments . May 21, 2018, 20:38 #109880

So it's looking like Dick Emery after all then ? Ha ha, yes most of us of a certain age could imagine a caricature of Roy Kinnear clad all in denim booting AW's skinny butt out the door ! My preferred choice would have been Jardim, though he is contracted for another 2 years, but this would be a decent appointment. Someone who is capable with a track record and can organise us back into something resembling a unit again and back into the CL. You never know, we might even appear tactically astute when we get there ! First things first though, this mess has to be sorted out and is no job for an Arteta or the feint - hearted. The fact that it came to this doesn't reflect well on any of the decision makers at the club and there's a reason why that last plane was flown above the final game. It beggars belief that they couldn't see AW should have gone last year ( 2014 imo ), and it's done real damage. Anyway, onwards and upwards.

John F - the average age of punters at the Emirates is 50 year old’s all dressed up in retro mod / suedehead look or suits for the weekdays. I’m afraid I fit both looks and also know the Dick Emery connection . On that basis it probably will be sung !

    May 21, 2018, 17:31 #109870

Tend to agree with baddie on this one ,the press had me convinced that we had signed Higuain a couple of years ago .The board probably do favour Arteta but are interviewing others to see if they would be a fit into their structure and be a better alternative.Ernie ,I like Emery but from what I read about him is that he was a bit soft on players discipline at PSG and If true would not be what this Arsenal team requires now.But he may be worth a punt just so the crowd can chant "you are awful but we like you".(Might have to be a certain age to get that one).

Tony Evans you ask if the media is way off beam. The same media that lies constantly and manufactures stories whenever it has needed to? When George Orwell returned from a strife torn Spain during the Spanish Civil War in 1938 he was amazed that all the newspapers were lying, with the exception of the Guardian, who told the truth. I do not read newspapers and I think my take on reality is as strong as many and stronger than most. Bard, why should they rush into a decision? Any company, and a footie club is a company nowadays, takes it's time to ensure as much as possible that the selection is based on good foundations, as flimsy as those foundations may really be. Take a chill powder, do a Badarse and think of eggs. It's much more enjoyable. Just remember that despite you guys and myself having a differing approach the new manager will arrive on my doorstep at exactly the same time as yours. And none of us will have a say in whosoever it will be. Do none of you really read and absorb Ron's posts? He has it nailed. Take no notice of me, but he is in your camp; you should take heed of them, he is the closest to understanding the situation.

I suppose the players must have bought into the fact, or know it's Arteta, as I read yesterday some of them aren't happy with him getting rid of Lewin and Colbert apparently he blamed them for his injury or aftercare and treatment etc at the time and were first on his hit list, I remember Ashley cole touching on something similar with Colbert and Gary lewin in his book regarding his injury at the time having a stand up row about it (treatment), if true we've had the likes of Colbert and others stinking the place out all this time.

I wonder what the delay is? Is the media way off beam with the Arteta story or, if it is true, is he having second thoughts, or are Arsenal still pursuing other options? Apparently Henry is being interviewed today - another very uninspiring candidate. Still at least Rodgers appears happy in the one team league up in Scotland and is not being linked at all with Arsenal now. I still think we need a strong, experienced type in the Simeone / Allegri mould - Arteta's appointment would be a massive disappointment for me. At least it's not Wenger is the mantra we must all cling to, and we have to hope the board knows what it is doing! Of course they do!

Meant to say too that Arteta and his people might not be in such a rush to accept that these great footballing gurus, Mislintat and his sidekick (who the heck are they anyway?) are quite as omnipresent and omnicompetent as Gazadis and many fans seem to want to believe. Seems to me that Arsenal can dally an odd foreign name in front of our support and they ll automatically think he s manna from footballing heaven, such is the desperation to think radical change is afoot. If the new bloke has got to doff his cap to them, hes entitled to wonder what they really do offer and what cut priced, bargain basement dross they ll air lift in for him in the pre World Cup rush to grab players before the price goes up after theyve had a shining 10 mins on the TV in some non event group group game or 2. Can bet yr life Arsenal will want to be doing business early this year so to save a few quid here and there. For all Arteta knows they might be looking at the new Denilsons and Squillaccis as we speak.

Delays are perhaps inevitable. MA will have his advisers asking him if he really does wish to be a possible whipping boy in a collegiate managerial system or whether its too big a risk to his future career at 36 yrs of age. Its not as if hes desperate and hes not coming from Port Vale is he, hes got a great role at City. Lets face it, Arsenals plan to install him in the midst of a non ECL managerial experiment might not appeal in the end. MA has much to lose. One major managerial f--k up can tarnish careers for ever these days. Think Neville at Valencia. PS your post could be one from circa 2008!! Same old requirements matey and its exactly that which MA needs to contemplate isnt it. Greenhorn he might be, but hes right to think it through to its full extent in my view.

Certainly never expected Wenger to call it a day and that's because he hasn't. He was sacked, pure and simple, in the nicest possible way. If he had had his way he would have been carried out in a box in about 2030! Now he's gone the new manager can at least start to deal with the back 5 and defensive midfield issues that have plagued the club for so many years now, with Clueless apparently completely oblivious to them.
