Arsene and Arsenal Fans are to blame for this season’s failures

Things declined so far because supporters accepted lack of ambition

Arsene and Arsenal Fans are to blame for this season’s failures

Gazidis and Wenger: Both gone, their legacy lingers on

What do Arsenal fans expect and at what stage are Arsenal fans going to take some responsibility for the mess the club currently finds itself in? I ask because having read the editor's latest piece, though I agree with much of his sentiment, I am baffled by the current approach of Arsenal fans. Let me explain.

As far back as 2010, I wrote in to the Gooner and suggested that Arsenal were headed into a dangerous and negative spiral where losing had become acceptable and standards were increasingly lowered. At that time, it had been six years since Arsenal had won a league title and five years since the club had won anything at all. Fast forward to 2012, one 8-2 shellacking at Old Trafford later, I again wrote in, saying that Arsene Wenger needed to be flung out of Arsenal quickly. It wasn’t a reaction to one result, but to years of incompetence. Invincible season or not, no manager can live off the past – but it was obvious Wenger was.

Arsenal fans though, would have none of it. We heard the now-familiar excuses:
Real fans have patience
Do you want to become a circus like Chelsea and change manager every summer
Arsenal has class we back our managers”
We cannot compete with oil money

Now. Time has shown that every single one of those excuses were just lame and suddenly, those excuses have disappeared. Odd. Let us be crystal clear here. Arsenal for over 15 years, were a Champions League club. Fans were happy to show off about “Top 4” without adding in the context that every single season, Wenger embarrassed the club’s name in the CL. There are too many thrashings and humiliations to consider, but the evidence is clear. Arsenal fans unconditionally sat back and allowed Arsene Wenger to be unaccountable to the club for over fourteen years. In the time since Arsenal last won the league in 2004, Leicester actually won the thing (so you can succeed without oil money. Who knew?). In a season where Man United, Citeh, Chelsea and Liverpool all took the year off, Arsenal and Wenger only managed to finish 10 points behind Leicester. Wenger’s reaction at the time? “There are 18 other teams who would love to be in our position”. This is a loser mentality, and it is one that infects the club’s boardroom and fans still today.

Let us not muck around: Arsenal fans were perfectly fine with Arsene Wenger not challenging for the league title for fourteen years. FOURTEEN seasons, Arsenal fans sat back and made a plethora of frankly laughable excuses. To be clear: challenging for the title means having a mathematical chance of winning the league with 3 -4 matchdays remaining (not being top in October). This has not happened since 2004. The “oil money” excuse was blown out the water by Leicester. Back then, even Klopp at Dortmund was winning back to back Bundesliga titles in a league where Bayern have more wealth than the rest of the division put together. Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid managed to win La Liga beating both Messi’s Barca and Zidane’s Madrid full of stars – whilst making two CL finals and winning a further two European trophies. “Financial doping” was and always will be a losers’ excuse and it was one Wenger and Arsenal fans embraced. The alternative of course, was for Arsenal fans to find Wenger and Arsenal’s performance unacceptable, boycott matches and instigate change. They bottled it – but then will accuse the team of being bottlers.

In 2013, many people thought Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund should have been appointed and Wenger sacked. It isn’t hindsight, it was the obvious call. We saw Man City sling out title-winning Pellegrini when Pep Guardiola became available. We saw Bayern do the same with treble-winning Jupp Heynckes. This is what big clubs do and how they act. Arsenal fans? It was all about loyalty to Wenger above the needs of the club. And the club is now going to suffer the consequences for years to come.

Emery has made several mistakes. For starters his team selection against Palace at home was a disaster – I get he had to rotate, but you cannot EVER play Jenkinson in any football match you want to win, alongside clowns like Mustafi. Then there was the Brighton match at home, an outrageous failure in a match Arsenal had no excuse not to win. The Europa League Final was an abomination, you cannot justify losing any final 4-1.

Here is the thing though: this is Unai Emery’s first season at Arsenal. Let us examine the scale of the absolute sh**show he has inherited. If I told you that Arsenal and Chelsea had the same wage bill, would you believe that? Arsenal fans have spent years worshipping the pathetic Mesut Ozil, a symbol of everything that is wrong about Arsenal: weak mentality, ineffective, disappears. Many people have been calling Ozil out for years but it took Arsenal fans that disgraceful Baku final to finally wake up. Where have they been? Ozil cost £42m. Hazard cost just £32m. Ozil earns £350k a week. What is the reason Ozil is on £350k a week? Well, because Wenger and City had reached an agreement with Man City to sell Alexis Sanchez for £60m over the summer. At the last minute, fearing another fan backlash for yet again, selling an Arsenal player to City (Nasri, Adebayor, Clichy, Sagna etc) Wenger got cold feet and asked Gazidis to pull the plug. It led to the farcical scenario of losing Sanchez anyway, bringing in the appalling overpaid Mkhitaryan and then being forced into giving Ozil – whose only offer with less than 12 months of his deal remaining was from Fenerbache – a crazy new deal. Hazard is on almost half Ozil’s current wage - £180k a week. The difference between the two players, and both teams couldn’t be greater. Arsenal and Chelsea have the same wage bill, but Chelsea have a far superior pool of players. Pedro, a squad player, walks into the Arsenal team. Look at Rudiger, superior to any defender. Luiz we mock, but again, superior to any Arsenal defender. Azpilicueta the same. There’s the world class N’Golo Kante – a player Wenger refused to pay the going £31m for, and that same summer opted to instead shell out £37m for Granit Xhaka. Yet, Arsenal fans genuinely continued to claim Wenger “had no money”. The fact that Mauricio Pochettino, not having signed a single player in the transfer market, made top 4 and a CL final - whilst building a new stadium – should be a source of huge embarrassment to every single Arsenal fan who excused Wenger’s failure by claiming the stadium impeded progress. It was nonsense then, and is nonsense now.

Stan Kroenke is clearly a leech and a disgraceful owner who does not care. That much we know. Ask him for his knowledge about football and I suspect he’d be know more about how to bet on tennis and win than the playing side of the football club he owns. The other thing we also know though, is that despite Kroenke not investing a penny, Arsenal make so much money that Kroenke did not actually need to. Arsene Wenger was given a LOT of cash to spend at Arsenal – it was spent appallingly. Arsenal fans have to ask themselves how a League 2 standard footballer like Carl Jenkinson is on £40k a week. How is Elnenny on over £50k a week? How is Mustafi on £100k a week? How is Xhaka on over £100k a week? How was Welbeck on £110k a week? How is Mkhitaryan on £180k a week, and how is Mesut Ozil on bigger money than De Bruyne, Hazard, Salah, Mane, Sane and Sterling? None of this is down to Unai Emery. Emery has been strangled by the years of financial recklessness and mismanagement from Wenger, Gazidis and Kroenke.

Kroenke’s biggest mistake was failing to sack Wenger as far back as 2013. Klopp was available, Arsenal was a CL club (Liverpool was not at the time) – but this did not happen because Arsenal fans were perfectly happy with Wenger’s failure. It was down to FFP, “oil money”, “injuries” etc…. One thing that is funny and instructive under Emery is that whereas Wenger got thirteen seasons of excuses (despite having 100% control of the club), after his first season at the club in which he has managed more points, and superior European performance to the previous season, with players that are not his – Arsenal fans have suddenly become winners with sky-high standards. What happened?! Whilst I agree Emery blew the top 4 chance: Spurs, City, Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea all have superior players to Arsenal. I would go further and say that Wolves, Leicester, Palace and Watford have players I would kill to see at Arsenal (Neves, Doucoure, Jota, Coady, Boly, Tielemans, N’Didi, Chilwell, Wan-Bissaka, Zaha, Maddison, Ricardo, Maguire etc).

I have to ask again: how are Arsenal FC, with a wage bill of over £200m – a wage bill not overseen or implemented by Emery (who has nothing to do with contracts or transfers) – in a position where Leicester, Watford, Everton, Wolves and Spurs have players Arsenal would kill to have? How is that even possible when Arsenal pay far more in wages than all of those clubs? This comes down to one thing and one thing only, and it is years of grotesque mismanagement from Wenger and Gazidis. Period. And Arsenal fans let it happen. Sorry but that is the truth.

Now we hear some people hilariously claim “Arsene would have got us top 4” even though Wenger is literally the reason Emery rocked up to a Europa League club. Even though Wenger’s last CL match was a 10-2 thumping against Bayern. Is that what top 4 was about? Whereas Klopp at Liverpool struggled in the beginning, Klopp had assets to sell and rebuild in Coutinho. Which assets has Wenger left Emery? A sky-high wage bill and there is not a single player there Emery can sell for big money. That is Wenger’s legacy. All the Arsenal fans sitting there reminiscing over Wenger need to also ask themselves why it is that Arsene Wenger remains unemployed.

Real Madrid changed managers three times, approached Klopp, Pochettino etc… not Wenger. Inter changed manager, no interest in Wenger. Milan forced Gattuso to go, no interest in Wenger. PSG changed managers and again, no interest in Wenger. In fact, the only job offer Arsene Wenger has received since being sacked from Arsenal (and he was) has been from Fulham who were headed for the Championship. After he refused, they gave it to Scott Parker. Curious that Fulham never once thought of ringing Pep, Pochettino or Klopp eh?

It is curious to read the Gooner editor ask for Allegri after one season of Emery. For starters: do Arsenal fans realise where in the pecking order this club is? Zero CLs ever. No title challenges for 14 years. Abysmal overpaid players and recklessly mismanaged wage bill. No culture of winning. What do people think Allegri is going to do with disasters like Koscielny, Monreal, Kolasinac, Jenkinson, Calum Chambers, Xhaka etc? And a £50m budget that can’t be increased until the wage bill fat is trimmed? He is not Jesus Christ, he is a football manager. Allegri is used to working with dedicated pros and winners like Chiellini, Ronaldo, Matuidi, Zlatan and Pirlo. Allegri is also used to working under pressure from fans who are dissatisfied with a season where you reach a CL semi-final and finish runner-up in the league. Arsenal fans unfortunately, are not of that mentality. You cannot spend 14 years celebrating mediocrity, Top 4 and a few FA Cups (a competition big clubs don’t prioritise) and suddenly from one season to the next, demand sky-high standards! Stan Kroenke has seen how far he can push Arsenal fans. He saw that when after an 8-2 thrashing at OT, and after a season where Wenger lost 6-3 at City, 6-0 at Chelsea, 5-1 at Anfield and 3-0 at Everton ALL in the same season, the fans chanted “One Arsene Wenger” in the final game of the season as the club finished empty-handed again and failed. So I ask again: if Kroenke has seen that Arsenal fans are perfectly happy to entertain mediocrity for so long, why should he act any different?

To paraphrase Monty Python, I am thinking of employing Wenger as a central tunnel support for the Victoria Line. Sorry, scratch that. That would only work if he were encased in concrete and we couldn't have that now could we, because apart from anything else, he would want the concrete made without sand cement steel rebar or indeed water. It would have to be made of luncheon vouchers and unbelievable belief.

great article I agree with every word, no Arsenal manager should survive an 8-2 defeat he should have gone years ago, the former custodians of this once great club should hang their heads in shame selling to the absent yank as well. and I've always had a problem with many so called fans who's false worship of wenger has left us in a such a mess, we missed out on Klopp, guardiola, allegri, coming here, instead Kroenke carried on employing the specialist in failure. I cant see how we'll ever be classed as a big club again with the septic tank in charge, there used to be a football club in N.5

Like you Ron I was at all of those away games when we were humiliated. Have to agree with everything you say about them, that first 20 minutes against Liverpool was the nearest I ever came to leaving a game early and a few of my mates did that day. For me the 3 nil to Everton that season was the real killer and I don't remember any of us away fans singing his name after those games... The 8-2 he should of resigned straight after the game, if he was as he declared a true Arsenal man.!!That day was the day I lost all respect for him and his achievements will never mean anything now, watching him pocket that money up until 2018 I totally understand and agree with Don H and Tony..

Whilst I agree with everything you say about Wanker and Kroenke and Gazidis and accept that the fans tolerated far too much shit for years, I would blame Wanker for 90% of the mess, Kroenke for 8% and Gazidis for 2%. Some of us knew for years, most knew for 5 or more years and finally the rest knew 2 years ago. Wanker vandalised the club. His name should never be spoken again. Emery deserves a bit of time and it's a shame that his predecessor has ruined this for him.

Marky - they are very good comments about Arsene. I can see yr take on him totally. Im a fence sitter about him really because until we know the real terms of his job and the limits etc etc under which he operated after the stadium move, its hard to sign up to yr take on him. Most certainly i wanted him to go by resignation after the 8-2 especially and then later wanted him removed but ive had the view that the reins of power were as fully held by him as is oft suggested. I saw all the thrashings and i still think the worst was the 5-1 at Anfield. That was the day i wanted Ozil gone. LIverpool just scared Arsenals breeches off that day with their running and power and Ozils was arguably the most disgusting, disgraceful show ive ever seen by and AFC player that day. He gave up after 10 mins and didnt care a jot that his team mates knew it. Typically, Wenger let him get away with it. During that game in those first 20 mins we were all saying it was going to be worse than the 8-2. It seriously looked like being a 10-0 or even worse.

Peter Wain - I probably need to see a shrink re my relationship with Arsène . I loathed him in the last 5 years. He dished up humiliation upon us. When he ran off to hide in David Dein’s house after the 8-2 humiliation Dein made his most serious error by not telling him the truth. As a friend he owed him that. The 6-0 at Chelsea was horrific. The Bayern Munich games destroyed his rep in Europe. Hence no one has been in for him. He just kep in taking the money having successfully filled the vacuum in the Arsenal exec level. He reinvented Arsenal to see top 4 as a trophy in itself. He told us that he’d happily finish 2nd for 20 years. So totally undermining competitive sport. He happily sold UTD our only world class player after a secretive call with Fergie. Good riddance to him. At least after the trauma of his removal we can look at Emery without emotion. That will allow a sensible decision to be made on his future .

Peter Wain - I get exactly where Don H is coming from re his loathing of Wenger. I agree the good times were unbelievable, but he is the man who eventually destroyed my love for Arsenal and I can never forgive him for that. You can argue the board and owner were equally culpable but Wenger was the manager, the man in charge, making some of the most lunatic decisions on transfers and tactics that I have ever witnessed as a supporter - he drove a wedge between me and the club that I can't get back from; yes of course Arsenal are still 'my club' but not remotely like they used to be. By the by would he have got away with the lunacy at Man U or Liverpool - no way, the fans would have seen to that. At Chelsea or Man City - not a chance, the board would have shown him the door after the 8-2 mauling at OT.

Many a good post of the back of this one , as Marky said in an earlier post majority of us on here where saying all of this a long time ago so probably should of been sent elsewhere ... Ron i think the Bouldy move is a good one and not just keeping him on as a favor . He had a great record as under 18's coach and won the FA youth cup in 2009 so i think he can still offer something at that level. Not going to blow my own trumpet oh alright i will , i did say last week it would be a good time for Freddie to replace Bould in the first team set up! Thinking about it, it may will be with the future in mind. As Dicks replacement ...........

I don't think that I can really agree with the contents of this piece any more than 99%. My loathing for Wenger knows no limits but running a close second are the brain dead who perpetuated his reign with mostly supine but occasionally aggressive support. THE WORST MANAGER in the club's history. BUT, whilst I would very much like to relieve the French Fraud of his entire financial resources to try and clean up some of his legacy and drop him and his creatures in the Gulag Archipelago with a bag of crisps between them and Mezut Ozil doing the camp food and medical admin, what good does this blood letting do? You can't get rid of the morons. You just try and make sure that we have good players administrators and coaches in place. "I told you so" is great, but it won't get us any further forward. I greatly enjoyed the rant though.

morning Col B - i think we re still a social club really. Eg - Bould - hes been there on AWs right hand for yrs and yet now theyve deemed him unfit for purpose but find him a job with the kids to keep it slippers on cozy? It may be, just an employment law protection thing by the club but they could afford to pay him off surely. Nothing at all against Bouldy, but hes symptomatic of the clubs ,malaise and surely needed moving on. Good luck to Llungberg of course. He was a good lad at his best and seems to have potential as a Coach based on what we read. Re Pompey - They did a Leeds really didnt they. Played big salaries for 'names' who were past their sell by date plus that wobble chinned oaf Redknapp was there. Just look at the clubs state after hes left. All in the financial s--t..

I'm afraid the Arsenal has been run like a cosy club for too long. To paraphrase itsRonagain below, much like our esteemed politicians, the powers that be were happy to sit back and enjoy whilst the going was good, wallowing in the European trough. It is only when that particular gravy train pulls to an abrupt halt that anything is questioned. Our club (is it our club any more? dunno) is in a mess and needs a lot of fixing for sure. BTW; on a similar-ish subject, Portsmouth a few years ago. The fans must have realised that 20,000 gates and PL football doesn't equate? But they were only too happy to go along with it until reality bit - personally I don't have any sympathy, only with the "little people" who actually ran the club who got shafted from a great height whilst the players walked away.

It would be truly wonderful if The Arsenal were setting the football agenda again instead of being abject followers. The way to achieve greatness would be to find a way to change the ownership model - thousands of stakeholders as per the Continental model but a first over here. Will it happen in a 2 tier UK - bloated London v The Rest? Nah!! We're all doomed I tell you.

You can't leave Kroenke out of the articles headline equation - this season is a culmination of Wenger, Kroenke and yes the match day fans who continued to turn up week in week out, not protesting, and lapping up a diet of dross during the last 10 years or so of Wenger's tarnished reign. I absolve Emery of much of the blame for this season - yes he has made mistakes, not fixed our dreadful defence and made some strange team selections but look what he inherited.

Hi Ron, thanks and always enjoy your comments mate. I think I’ve seen that edition of Big Match revisited, is it the one where Terry Mancini scores for us? Give me Highbury, Brian Moore and the Big Match over the emirates, sky sports and that cretin Martin Tyler who thinks he speaks for the whole nation, gushing as he does over the Premier League as if we are all so privileged to bear witness to it!!! No hyperbole was ever needed to sell Highbury was it mate, a special place lost forever thanks to a greedy few

Ernie certainly sums up Ozil! Amazes me how these pundits and players hail him as a fantastic 'talent' but query his effort? How can that work? It would be laughable if he wasn't so poor and didn't get paid what he does. The rabble on sky all drinking out of the same filthy trough to keep their cushy jobs never ever say it how it is. I suggest Ernie is on the panel next time theres an Arse game on. He can have a one off, no holds barred appearance. It would have to be a one off as anybody who actually worked for them and told the truth wouldnt last ore than 1 match would they!

The very same fans who booed and called Fabregas and RVP greedy for leaving the sinking ship to improve their chances of playing for a better club and winning league titles are the same fan boys who worship at the temple of that lazy bastard Ozil. If you want to see a greedy player look no further than him.A player who is paid £18m a year but has never in 6 years at the club turned up once in an away game v a top 6 opponent.A player who our dopey fans believe is so good that when he was available in January 2018 to sign a pre contract for another club like Ramsey did NO ONE wanted him. I used to hurt when Arsenal lost finals. Am i hurting over the Chelsea defeat? No. I gave up going to games at the Emirates in 2010 because i could see what was coming.Wenger should have been fired after the Birmingham final

I am no fan of Kronke and I stopped going in protest many years ago, however Kronke cannot be blamed for our appalling defending and the lack of effort in dozens of matches in at least each of the last 10 seasons. That was due to the mismanagement by messrs Gazidis & Wenger, beguiled by his huge salary Wenger became an accountant not a football manager and he started the slide. The board are mainly responsible for the increased rate of decline "if Arsene doesn't have a plan then we don't" gushed Chips, in awe of his wonderful manager - Wenger was certainly not the messiah but a naughty greedy boy. I have said repeatedly that the fans need to organize and speak with one voice - we have some very articulate fans in our various supporters bodies, these people must push for fan representation on the board - day I call it the "German Model"

Redshirts - oh so true mate, all that you say! Oddly enough and bad it was back in 1974 i was watching an old Big Match re visited last night for 20 mins or so. It was a game v QPR and we were 21st in the league. 2-2 result. Some great players on view and a fighting performance and brilliant anchoring by Bran Moore and a chat with Alan Ball and Stan Bowles afterwards. In my view, you're so right with the great AFC con, but the bigger con is the whole Premier League SKY fuelled circus. I wonder when all of the shirt wearing match goers will finally see through that? Your comments on fan detachment are bang on the nail. Good to hear from you.

In fact I downright hate what Arsenal has become since the stadium move and the lies that us fans were fed at the time and subsequently since about how we were going to become a European superpower on the pitch and the next Bayern Munich blah blah blah. Some fans saw through this at the time, others have taken longer but surely there isn’t a long standing (ie pre sky takeover) supporter left that can honestly say they feel the same connection they used to. I gave up my season ticket 2 years into the emirates move realising I’d been conned and damned if I was going to give the parasites my money any longer. Everyone connected with the stadium move and those such as Kroenke, Gazidis and Wenger bear the responsibility for ruining our great club. It was all a con to make a few select individuals even richer and I bet not one of them has lost a moments sleep over what they have done to our club. I didnt bat an eyelid when we surrendered pathetically to Chelsea the other day. That is the DNA of the new Arsenal and is the norm now. Contrast to when I was a kid in tears after the CWC final vs Valencia way back when. If you’d told me back then that one day I would fall out of love with Arsenal I would have laughed at the very thought of it. Would love to get in a time machine and head back for one last match at Highbury cos I miss that place and that club so much. Still, had a good old laugh at the spuds the other night so not all doom and gloom!

complete tosh. You cannot blame Wenger for last season. Blame the owner for not giving the new manager sufficient funds. Blame the people who bought a swiss 35 free transfer an ageing centre half who is slower than we already had and young Frenchman in midfield who really hit the wall at the end of the season. To blame some one who was not there is ridiculous=- blame the comic who cannot coach.

Emmanuel - nice piece but you need to insert the following as an intro. “Dear Untold , Dear Tony Atwood , Dear Oddball Walter, Dear Megaphone blaring Arsenal Circular Graham Perry, Dear lunatic Wenger boys who used to infest the Gooner ( think old age did for 2 of them ) Dear Arsène and Ivan..... That’s a lot better. Surely you’re not aiming this piece at us?

Well said, and regarding Ozil there's even mods on here who slate anyone who slags off Ozil. He is the symbol of everything that's gone wrong under the mismanagement of Wenger, The Old Etonian /New money board and Kranky. People were saying it years ago that we were on the road to ruin, guess what that event horizon is fast approachoing. "Ruin" - midtable mediocrity - that is not what we were sold when the new stadium was proposed - in fact quite the opposite. Basically we let the wool be pulled over our eyes, me included up till 2008.

"This comes down to one thing and one thing only, and it is years of grotesque mismanagement from Wenger and Gazidis. Period. And Arsenal fans let it happen. Sorry but that is the truth." And Yes ! It is the truth. And if it wasn't for some token resistance after the Bayern debacle from a small minority, we'd still have Wenger here spouting his nonsense. Arsenal FC became Arsene FC - and plenty of fans were quite happy to see that happen and do nothing about it. Spilt milk now. But the climb back is going to be painful and long and the writer is correct in the implication, that Emery is as good as it is going to get for the moment, as anyone like Allegri would not come under current circumstances.

HIndsight is a wonderful thing. Its true most supporters for a time were beguiled by the stadium move and whats was needed afterwards to pay for it and also, the same with 'project youth' and other things. However i can only assume that you never used to partake in the debates on the old BBC 606 debate boards when many used to used to argue strongly for change from 2005 time and afterwards. Your article uses a broad brush to attempt make yourself sound all knowing and omnicompetent. You failed.

This is the best article I’ve ever read about the situation at Arsenal. But you’re wrong about the fans: I stopped going 5 years ago in protest about Wenger and Kroenke. I know many others who’ve done the same. And you’re wrong about Emery: he’s not the answer to our problems. His appointment was just another mistake by an owner who is clueless. Dick’s defensive record in Spain should have disqualified him from the Arsenal job instantly.
