Thoughts on Arsenal's transfer window

What an unusual feeling: Arsenal fans smiling at the end of a transfer window. When was the last time we did that?

Deadline day typified the last month – a rollercoaster ride as the club pushed the Tierney and Luiz deals over the line. But Raul did it.

No-one could have expected this at the start of July. There Arsenal were, with a heap of deficiencies and a puny budget of £45million. Instead Raul wheeled and dealed like a man inspired. Is it too optimistic to say we can see a ‘new’ Arsenal taking shape, with a younger, more energetic squad?

Unlike Wenger and Gazidis, the club went into this window with a plan, to sign young talent to develop. OK, David Luiz is a stopgap exception. But Kieran Tierney, William Saliba, Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Martinelli could be Arsenal stalwarts for years to come.

The club has addressed pressing issues, strengthening at left back for now and centre back for the future, finding, in Dani Ceballos, a replacement for Aaron Ramsey while the likes of Joe Willock develop; and adding a talented winger in Pepe.

Ideally, it would have been great to add another young centre half like Dayot Upamecano. A short-term pairing of Sokratis and Luiz isn’t ideal. But Rob Holding should be back next month. Saliba will join next season. And you have to assume Arsenal will go back for Upamecano next summer, when he’ll be starting the final year of his contract at Leipzig.

Raul and Edu seem to be taking a more ruthless approach to pruning the squad too. Everton’s offer for Alex Iwobi was too good to refuse, especially when it came to balancing the books. Shame that Laurent Koscielny shredded a lot of goodwill by the circumstances of his move to Bordeaux, but the club found an alternative. Fringe players like Carl Jenkinson and Krystian Bielik have been moved on too, and for fees.

Now, if we could just shift Shkodran Mustafi, Mikki and Mohamed El-Neny before the European transfer window closes…

Arsenal’s rebuild is in the early stages of an ongoing process. It took Liverpool four years of improving transfer windows to reach where they are now. Arsenal have a long way to go yet. But after this window, there’s hope in the air at last. This squad looks strong enough to nail down third or fourth place. Let’s hope that’s realistic. Now it’s: over to you, Mr Emery.

Let’s face it we would have finished top 4 last season if it wasn’t for the Jenks/ Mustafi / El Neny inspired nightmare at home to Palace. Given that Hazard has slung his hook and Man U look pretty average I think Dick has to deliver this season. If he can’t deliver the CL with a front 3 that cost 160 million then it’s good bye from me.

You cant be a true smiler though unless yr at OT and schooled in smiling by OGS. Then you need pet names for the players. Here now you have the potential for a Gabby or even believe it or not, Gazza?. Nico, Wills and Tiers. Smiles on faces all round. Perhaps then smiles could painted on the football at home games? Smiles flashing on the screens every 30 secs.Big red lippy gash type smiles? We ll show them at OT how to smile properly! Even the statues around the ground can have ruby red smiles painted on the faces. Big smiley stickers in each window of the glass dome. Beat that for smiling Utd!

These sorts of posts demonstrate clearly why the Club are where they are. The bar is set so low at Arsenal that provided our transfer imports have two legs and are under 40 lots of fans are salivating, and celebrating that we have turned a corner. 'Oh the club are now on track' rubbish is now the flavour of the month. What we seem to so easily forget is the fact that what Arsenal are world class at is bullshit and spin. if there had been a trophy for it we would have won it hands down for the last decade.

Well said. Particularly the last paragraph. Carroll was to Liverpool what the Sanchez saga was and is to us. That's not to say we will follow directly in their footsteps but last seasons window felt like 'half a window to me as Emery was clearly still getting his feet under the table and Gazedis was still there. Now we are seeing the full effects of the new regime. Clearly we have to get back into the CL and we will be up a gum tree if by this time next year we are still in the EL. But - as Upper says - you can clearly see a new, younger and better squad taking shape.

My hope & yesterday's optimism is rapidly disappearing - as well as the ever increasing list of players "unavailable" to play at Toontown, I have had a look at the medical prognosis for our new wonder boy left back. It ain't good & he now looks like yet another perm sick note. Hope our medics know what they are doing here.
