Spurs Bite The Bullet Before Arsenal

Jose Mourinho has been given a three and a half year contract to deliver silverware to N17

Spurs Bite The Bullet Before Arsenal

He's back...

Many were surprised at the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino from his job at Spurs, announced on Tuesday evening. That his replacement, Jose Mourinho was announced the morning after with almost indecent haste tells us that he was lined up a while before the news of Poch’s departure was made public. It seems like the home draw with Sheffield United was the final nail in the coffin of the Argentinian, who by all accounts would have been happy to move on from the club last summer. However, he remained, presumably because a job he did want to go to was not available, and because resigning from Spurs would have sacrificed the big pay-off he will now receive.

On one level, it’s a bit of a relief here. Pochettino could have built a dynasty at Spurs if the progress of recent seasons had continued, but ultimately, his passion for the job, and the gradual loss of motivation amongst his players (not helped by the club’s frugal wage policy) did for him. Results have not been good enough for a long time, masked by the run to the Champions League final last season, a competition is which Spurs rode their luck so frequently it really felt like their name was on the trophy.

The arrival of Mourinho on that score is perhaps significant. Spurs have won only two League Cups since 1991, the last of those in 2008, when Juande Ramos was the manager. A long time ago. Aside from a bit of TV punditry and making the odd advert, Mourinho has been relatively quiet since his dismissal by Manchester United almost a year ago, but he enjoys living in London and so the opportunity of working at one of the bigger clubs in the capital again was always a possibility.

Now that the decision has been made, Arsenal fans can unite in their expression of distaste for the idea of Mourinho replacing Unai Emery, one that had been touted around in recent days. In fairness, many have remained consistent, never wanting him at the club. Others were open to the idea, not concerned so much with the past, and believed he could improve the team’s ability to get results. Defending and holding onto a lead are certainly areas where Spurs’ new head coach is regarded as being better than Unai Emery.

Ultimately, Mourinho is a results man. If he still has the talent to achieve those by hook or by crook, he certainly has a good chance of bringing silverware back to Tottenham. Don’t even rule out another Champions League final – Mourinho has beaten the odds to win the competition with Porto and Inter in the past. And in spite of their 7-2 demolition at home by Bayern Munich, it’s very difficult to believe Tottenham won’t make the round of 16, looking at the group’s remaining fixtures.

The Spurs fans might not enjoy Mourinho’s style of football, but they’ll accept it if they can see a trophy is a genuine possibility. The real question is whether or not the game has passed Jose by, as it did his old adversary Arsene Wenger. Is the style of football that reached its zenith in that remarkable treble winning season at Inter still going to cut it in 2020, especially given the dark arts are less easier to get away with, now that VAR is in play? Arsenal fans will hope not. Mourinho had a decent enough start at Manchester United, with two trophies in his first season, followed by a runners-up spot in the Premier League the next. However, he then started to fall out with more of his players, as he did in his second spell at Chelsea (after delivering another league title, let it be said). One thing that does look near certain – however successful he might be, it will almost certainly end in tears.

What is significant though is that Spurs have acknowledged the club has started to go backwards under Poch, that he didn’t really want to be there, and that there was no good reason to delay the change. If only Arsenal were as pro-active…

John F I disagree slightly about Eddie, he’s trying to play attacking football at a very small club and is bound to concede a few goals along the way ... I’d rather try him than a has been such as Jose. It might be a gamble worth taking , and I do like the way he conducts himself, comes across very well .

You are right Ron he has done a great job at Bournemouth. Arteta yes it is on the cards, perhaps the plan is that the board will allow Dick to bring the club down so low that that the fans will take to anybody out of desperation even Iain Dowie.

Goonhog - we all would mate and i think Simeone would be everybody s first choice if there was a half a chance of getting him. Its not happening though. Not a chance. That owner and Board at Arsenal couldn't cope with him. He want a truly mammoth prestigious job to prize him from AM.

I agree with you JohnF. The problem is the owner and he’s not interested in rocking the boat. Money and collecting his dividends are is his strategy. Simeone would be a great shout. The way AM adapted to 10 men and then Simeone being sent off in our EL semi was impressive. Just the sort of passion and preparation I’d like to see from an Arsenal manager/coach. Alas, I can’t see us attracting that type of manager at the moment.

Hi John. I hear that. Hes done a great job though with a club that has no right to even survive in the PL. wilder for me has done a great job but its too early think he could take a job like Arsenal as i see it. Hes sitting pretty at the moment but shades of Owen Coyle may yet appear? I tell you what will happen - Arteta s going to end up there at Arsenal. Guardiola can see the route out of MC down the road. Arteta will be thinking hes needing to look beyond sitting there like a lemon at MC soon. He s Arsenal bound in my view. Cheap and cheerful. They ll dress it up with bells and whistles and there you go, bobs yr uncle ....... a real less than inspiring Wenger lite in place. He ll rock no boats in the boardroom and will probably even go there and work with that shambolic crew who are behind Dick right now. I think its nailed on more or less.

Calls for Simeone have gone quite .He would be my first choice but I doubt he would be interested.Ten hag is another I like due to his success with a very young Ajax team and I feel he could bring on our youngsters.I cannot see many managers being attracted to Arsenal if they do not have control of the transfer decision s that is probably why Dick was picked in the first place.I have a sense of frustration at the current situation the manager has lost the fans and appears the players too and yet the owner doesn't want to be separated from his cash and is happy to let the current malaise continue.

Sorry Ron I cannot agree about Eddie Howe as he has a worse defensive record then Dick.He conceded 70 last season and 61 season before .I always viewed him as Wenger lite. If it had to be a British manager then I would consider Chris Wilder .He has done a fantastic job at Sheffield Utd ,keeping them tight at the back and playing some good stuff at times.

I wdt go for Poch personally. I d have taken a dose of JM as a short term expedient, a rush of dourness/nastiness and unpleasantness. It wd have cleared cobwebs at Arsenal. Made them detested again. We really always best in our history when we’re detested. Then to have moved him in and allow in a proper coach. That was what I foresaw to be honest. Now? I d go to basics. Seek a new English identity. Generate the fans again. Risk falling lower in doing it. I d give Howe a go. We ve done the years of cosmopolitan , euro smoothness and it’s ended up with us being a fairyfoot club. Licked by lot of teams who no longer respect us. Many of the fans have lost respect, let’s be honest about that. I have to admit that I have to a very large extent. Arsenal are quite laughable now in truth. We are a quintessentially English club. Wenger ruined that. We need to get it back. Maybe Howe might need a man alongside him who knows Arsenal and is Arsenal through and through. Not the weasel Keown or Llungberg et al. Ask Dennis to come in some capacity perhaps? We need some radical thinking to put some honesty back into the Club. It’s lived a lie for so long. Fuck media perceptions and sexy images. Let’s get earthy again. It can’t be worse than the weak kneed aneamic purgatory we ve endured for a dozen yrs can it? The trouble is that we have an owner who neither knows nor cares for football or the clubs traditions and it’s so full of nobodies like this hapless crew who ‘ support’ Dick at the moment.

Who remembers the good old days when Owen Coyle was being talked up as possible Arsenal boss by some on here? You'll be pleased to know he's been looking for another job for a year after being sacked by the mighty Ross County. Come on, lets make it happen.

Mourinho - First Press Conference : Question - 'Did losing the CL Final mentally hurt the players ?' Response - "I don't know. Never lost a CL Final" Very Brian Clough, whether you like him or not.

Well. So strong is our desire for several clean sheets that Fat Sam or Pulis or Maureen would have straightened things out at the price of dullness. Pochettino is now available. Should we snap him up? It would be rather fun if we did a Barry Daines / Pat Jennings scenario. Surely we should go for it.

Hello Ron, sorry, meant on the Terraces Gooner site. Glad I made you laugh but it honestly wouldn't surprise me if I wake up on Monday morning to find we'd got Joe Royle in on a five year deal. Him and Mike Walker just sounded depressing enough for us right now.

Perry. Hi matey. No. It was on the On the Terraces site I read it I’m sure. There are some funny posts on there among that crew. Well done if it was you! Was funny.

It’s a hard one this, I’d have liked to see a couple of years under Mourinho so I’m a little gutted. But will not be surprised with Mourinho whether it’s a disaster for us or just as likely we end up laughing out heads off at their total implosion. I’m just hoping it pushes us harder to dump Unai. I just can’t see why he should be given 4 more games? Just sack him now. The Potch is an interesting phenomenon. No trophy to speak of. Yet he almost did a Mourinho / Porto. And has improved a whole range of players at Spurs and previously Southampton. Imagine if Arsenal had pulled the trigger earlier and hired him from the Saints. The transitional play would have been nuts. A close loss to Liverpool in the Champions league would have been taken with grace and a Lucas Moura style decision forgiven. In a completely alternate reality where Poch was our Boss I think he would have been well liked. Then he leaves us to go to Real?!?. Overall Potch despite no trophies can sit back with the likes of Real , Man U , PSG , Bayern probably putting out feelers . Let’s face it in the 50/50 leagues like France , Spain , Germany he would win a trophy or 5. Meanwhile poor old Unai might get Real Betis , Espanyol , Lens , Eintract Frankfurt . We need to get the next manager decision very right indeed. Potch I think would be ok.

Just listening to talkSPORT and the inflated sense of what Tottenham have achieved under Poch is hilarious really, Wenger finished top four 10 years running with similar financial restrictions and got absolutely slaughtered for it. Then Jamie Ohara with a straight face argues that Tottenham are a bigger club than us. You really couldn’t make that lot up. One Carling cup in 20 years, says it all really. More relieved than ever that they lost that CL final, best result with had in years.

HI Kev - had to laugh. Some guy on another forum said we ll react aggressively to Spurs sacking and Maureen going in............. by appointing Joe Royle or Mike Walker ha ha. Said in jest but i wouldn't be surprised!
