Arsenal’s experienced centre back David Luiz has confirmed he has spoken with Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira over a ‘dream’ return to the Portuguese giants.
Former Chelsea defender Luiz signed an initial 12 month contract with the Gunners last summer, with an option for a further year.
However, Mikel Arteta is yet to trigger the automatic extension with the result that Luiz is set to become a free agent on June 30.
Speaking to media outlet Record in Portugal, the 33-year-old Arsenal defender said: "I already spoke with Vieira about the return.
"My dream is to end my career at Benfica," he added. "When, I don't know, but it will happen... it will, if President Vieira allows me and if the fans want me to come back.
"It will be one of the most beautiful moments of my career."
