Why I have joined the Arsenal Supporters Trust

One fan explains his motivation for joining the organisation for those concerned about who owns their club

Why I have joined the Arsenal Supporters Trust

We should now try to get as many Gooners as possible to join the Arsenal Supporters Trust to be under one banner against the threatened Red & White Holdings takeover. The adage “any enemy of my enemy is my best friend” must be the major consideration, we seem a little fragmented as fans but none of us want Alisher Usmanov in control at any price. I also think we should make it very clear to David Dein that his behaviour over the last year has poisoned everything he has ever done for the club. Let him know that he is no longer “Mr Arsenal” but “Mr Ars**le”. Having worked for a small family business that was taken over by a PLC I know that big business cares very little for people’s feelings - but if we could just become a big enough spanner you never know what we could achieve.

The results the team have achieved have definitely damaged David Dein, sitting where ‘The Spuds’ are is what Dein would have wanted. And yet how ironic is is that they spent nearly £40 million for the privilege of being in the bottom three.

I have joined the Arsenal Supporters Trust because they are talking to our board and that is a priority. But if we can let the board know that thousands of Gooners are doing the same because we are up for the fight it may just prevent any weakening by those sitting on a few precious shares.

Here however is my main reason for joining (some of you may want to reach for the sick bag here). I have never been more impressed with Arsene Wenger than this season. All the turmoil in the close season, the lack of “star signings” etc – yet the guy is running the club as well as the team. He is getting players we have all slated playing like world beaters and the football being played is the best on the planet. The guy is simply the best manager we have ever had and is the most intelligent man in football and I want him to know that I support him on and off the field. So as Arsene is against foreign ownership, so am I.

(Ed’s note – The writer of this piece has just joined the Arsenal Supporters' Trust and urges you to. However, for clarification, AST policy is that they are against any hostile takeover, any debt lead takeover or any change of ownership that has the extraction of profits in the form of dividend payments to shareholders at its core. Red & White Holdings have indicated in their press briefings that they would like the board to consider paying dividends in the absence of any more large capital spending projects, so on that basis alone, the AST opposes any takeover attempt by them.)
