Angry Arteta fumes as lacklustre Arsenal fall to second defeat in a week as Brighton ease past Gunners after Pepe's opener

Furious Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta refuses to defend underperforming players as Gunners slide to 2-1 defeat at Brighton

Mikel Arteta on BT Sport after Arsenal's 2-1 defeat at Brighton on Saturday.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta fumed after Brighton's 2-1 victory over his side at the Amex on Saturday afternoon.

Two late goals from the Seagulls sealed victory for the home side after Pepe's excellet 68th minute strike put the Gunners ahead.

Lewis Dunk levelled seven minutes after the former Lille man's  superb left-footed curler appeared to set Arsenal on course for three points on the south coast.

Neal Maupay then powered home a late, late winner to clinch the first win of 2020 for Graham Potter's side.

Speaking after the match a visibly furious Arteta told BT Sport: "Defeat was very difficult to take. It was unnaceptable.

"We missed so many chances. We didn't compete for the second goal. At this level you cannot give goals away. We cannot accept that."

Defeat sees Arsenal remain in ninth place with the prospect of European football fast receding.

To cap a miserable week for the north Londoners, keeper Bernd Leno was stretchered off in the first half following a late challenge by matchwinner Maupay, with fears growing over the German suffering a long-term injury to his knee.

Arteta refused to blame Maupay, saying: "No player sets out to injure another [but Leno's injury] didn't look good.

I think its just easier now to state that whatever it is that Arsenal Football Club can possibly lack, that they lack it totally from the very top of the apex to the very bottom. It doesn't even resemble a football club anymore. Surely, nobody was surprised by them being turned over by Brighton?

This is the worst Arsenal team since Terry Neill was sacked back in 1983, the club is in dire straits the recruitment has been shocking for years signing David Luiz was absolutely insane giving ozil £350 grand a week it's the stuff of farce, no ambition from the absent owner. while down the road chelski have signed ziyech and werner, while we shop around in the French 2nd division type of players. and what the hell has martinelli done wrong to be left out he was a breath of fresh air when he broke into the team earlier this season. I just depair at the current status quo at this once great club.

Totally agree with ExPat Gooner - the club we used to love is now rotten to the core but the rot starts from the head. I really don't know where a rebuild can start from unless the Kroenkes can be persuaded to dispose of an underachieving Brit asset. I hate saying this but it does look as if the Club appointed a total rookie to succeed Dick. What player with true ambition would want to join this shit show?

I hope he includes himself in his criticism regarding his 87th minute substitutions and again ignoring Martinelli.I thought we were on top until our goal and we were unlucky not to be 3up but this team suffers from a lack of confidence to hold on once they have taken a lead .The sense of a collective here we go again rather then a let's get back in this attitude was noticeable when the equaliser was scored. The lack of strong characters on the pitch along with a few bang average players is a poor mix to have in a team.

Why is anyone suprised ? The club is rotten to the core. The likes of Raul Sanllehi and Josh Kroenke are making the decisions while Mislintat is booted out. Bringing in Emery, signing Luiz and Pepe and pinning their hopes on Arteta. It started with Wenger and Gazidis. Handing out stupid contracts to Ozil and Mkhitaryan (another Jimmy Carter). I guess singing 'Sack the Board' won't do too much...

Wow, even though we’ve seen it dozens of times over the last few years our ability to shoot ourselves in the foot is still a wonder to behold . Just watch their equaliser on MOTD later..... there really are no words.
