Athletic and standing at 6’ 4”, Patrick Viera was a 'strong as an ox' midfielder with a turn of pace that could stride him clear of most opponents. The France international made over 400 appearances for Arsenal and captured two league titles and three FA Cups. Viera donned the captain's armband in the immortal ‘Invincibles’ team that went through the entire 2003-4 season without losing a game.

Alex James

Signed in 1929, Alex James was a tricky playmaker who would go on to be a major impetus behind the Gunners securing three league titles in a row from his second season at the club. The additional five trophies that James helped his side claim - including another First Division crown and two FA Cups - ensured the diminutive Scotsman is regarded as one of the finest midfielders to have worn the red and white shirt.

Thierry Henry

One of the Gunners' greatest players and one of the greatest strikers in Premier League history, is Thierry Henry. So great he was in fact that Henry’s career at the club is commemorated with a statue outside the Emirates Stadium. The Frenchman stands alongside bronzes of fellow former players Tony Adams and Dennis Bergkamp. Arsenal’s leading all-time goalscorer, Henry won the Premier League Golden Boot a record four times. His 226 Arsenal goals in 369 appearances may never be bettered.

Dennis Bergkamp 

When Dennis Bergkamp first appeared in what would become 11 seasons at Arsenal, the Dutch midfielder was compared to the aforementioned Alex James. His impact was just as impressive. Bergkamp had arrived from Inter Milan in 1995 as the Gunners then-record signing. Never entirely prolific in front of goal, the Netherlands international bagged 87 top-flight goals with a whopping 94 assists. That tally of goals he set up for others puts Bergkamp in fifth place on the all-time Premier League assist charts. Arguably the greatest Arsenal player of them all, Bergkamp helped the Gunners to three league titles and four FA Cup wins.

Liam Brady

Liam Brady represented Arsenal for seven years as a professional after initially signing as a schoolboy. Despite the period from 1973 when the Irishman broke into the first team being fairly barren trophy-wise for the Gunners, Brady did pick up an FA Cup winners medal in 1979. Standing out among relatively mediocre Arsenal teams of the time, Brady was a true terrace hero whose attacking prowess from midfield is fondly remembered still. ‘Elegant’, ‘cultured’ and ‘intelligent’ are regularly used adjectives to describe the Republic of Ireland international.

Ian Wright

A purebred striker, Ian Wright was a speedy predatory poacher who hit more than 30 goals in a season four times. Wright smashed the club’s scoring record during his seven campaigns at Arsenal, though Thierry Henry would pinch it off him a few years later. Fondly remembered for the cries of ‘Ian Wright, Wright Wright!’ that accompanied him finding the back of the net, the striker was a member of the team that won the league and cup double in the 1992-3 season.

Tony Adams

‘Mr Arsenal’, one-club man Tony Adams signed for the team he would go on to make over 500 league appearances for as a schoolboy. As combative a defender as they come, and as captain for 14 seasons, Adams was a fan favourite for his leadership qualities and the demands he placed on his teammates. The Gunners gained 10 trophies during the 19 seasons that the 66-capped England centre back spent with Arsenal.
