Arsenal Women head coach Jonas Eidevall had an Arsenal legend in mind as the Gunners beat Tottenham Hotspur at a sold-out Emirates Stadium.

Alessia Russo’s goal sealed a 1-0 win over Spurs, in front of 60,050 fans in N5, and Eidevall reflected on the importance of a third Emirates Stadium sellout for Arsenal Women.

I was thinking about the quote from Dennis Bergkamp, that you do not support a football club because of an individual or for history or for a trophy, you go and support a team because you found an environment where you feel that you belong,” said Eidevall.

“That is what makes me extremely proud of being able to say more than 60,000 people have found a place where they feel they belong. And they feel this is their home and where they want to come and support their team.

“That is very special and that is something we need to keep alive and building on. But that is a special feeling that we have been able to create that.”

Arsenal Women’s attendance was the second highest in English football, men’s and women’s, on the weekend, only bettered by Tottenham’s home game against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. On Sunday, it was the highest attended game in the country.

Bergkamp’s quote in full reads: “When you start supporting a football club, you don’t support it because of the trophies, or a player, or history, you support it because you found yourself somewhere there; found a place where you belong.”
